I did a lot of research while writing both THE IMMORTALS and RILEY BLOOM series, and the inspiration for THE SOUL SEEKERS was born from there. During my reading, I kept coming across themes of Shamanism, and was so intrigued by the concepts, I knew I wanted to create a new series where I could continue to explore those ideas.
The first book, FATED, introduces Daire Santos, a sixteen year old girl who lives a fairly glamorous and global life with her Hollywood make-up artist mother. Surrounded by celebrities and raised on movie sets around the world, Daire has never lived in any one place long enough to make a real friend, or attend a real school-she's never experienced the sort of "normal" life that most teens are used to. But all of that changes when the visions that have haunted her for years intensify in a way that can no longer be denied, and she's sent to live with the grandmother she's never met, but who recognizes the hallucinations for what they really are-the calling to her destiny as a Soul Seeker-one who can navigate the worlds between the living and the dead.
Research has always been one of my favorite parts of the writing process. Not only does it help create a more authentic world for my I'm fascinated by all forms of myth and mysticism, and Shamanism, being one of the most ancient practices, seemed like an interesting world to explore. Though, to be clear, the mythology I've created for THE SOUL SEEKERS, does not prescribe to any one belief system. Rather I've cribbed together various concepts I came across during my research and tweaked them for my own storytelling purposes. So while, Daire Santos' lineage began as Shamans centuries ago, Daire is now known as a Soul Seeker- a new generation of Shaman.
While a student can learn the practices of Shamanism through extensive study, the title of Shaman can only be bestowed by the community in honor of the quality of healings provided. So while Daire Santos is one of a long line of Seekers, in order to claim the title, she will have to prove herself of its worth.

During last night's binding and banishing rite, bats suddenly appeared overhead just as I began to dance. You don't see many bats in the area, it was my first time ever seeing them outside of the mountains. They were small, delicate and beautiful and made the sweetest chirping sounds that echoed into the night. As I was dancing swiftly round the ring, they swooped and dived overhead, shadows against the dark blue sky. Wormwood and sage incense wafted around the yard, the cauldron fire was low and red and the spirits were on the move while I fell into the trance, dancing and spinning and diving like the bats who joined my rite from the first drum beat to the last. When the music stopped, the six or seven little winged things disappeared over the river, through the pines, into the distance.
Sometimes when you're crossing (traveling, journeying, hedgecrossing etc), you tumble down into an abyss before waking up on the otherside, sometimes it doesn't feel like anything at all but a standstill of moments and then a sudden rush. It's different for every witch I think. For me, when the balm or ointment helps alleviate the burden of connection to the physical world, I either dance or sit completely still, depending on what I'm going and where I am going.
I don't fear the violence anymore, the tearing, the beating, the feeling of being mentally rendered to bits. I don't have much fear about the process anymore. It's more of a thrilling sensation depending. You can't always control where you go, it's not really up to you. Sometimes the spirits seem to be leading you somewhere you need to be, or more importantly, where "they "want you to be. I take my wooden key with me, and whatever else I'll need to bring me home or protect me. Last night I took nothing with me but a silver chain that reminds me of this world and a piece of etched black slate, a message I would need to remember to deliver. The entire time I flew, I could still hear the echos of the bats, I think they flew with me.
When the bats left, I came back into myself and watched them fly away through the painful haze of my mind and body and spirit all coming back together. I've collected literature, research and articals on bats my entire life, hopeing to be visited by them someday. I don't know what it is about them, they're just so damned facinating to me. If I had thought to have a camera handy, I would have tried to get a picture of them as they glided as low as my shoulders. The bat in folk magic has long been associated with witchcraft, and utilized in folklore as remedies for everything from visibility to night-sight. Everyone remembers them being mentioned among the witches of Macbeth. In my culture, the bat is the herald of the un-rested or ghosts, and is a shape-shifter and trickster, like coyote is for Southwestern skins.
Whatever their reason for dancing with me during that dark rite, I'm happy to have made their acquaintanceship.

Bump! Back down to earth we go on Boxing Day. The other day I heard on telly that from a kid's point of view it's the worst day of the year: 364 days until Christmas. Ha ha! When I drew this card today, it reminded me of bumping back down to reality. Bump!
The SERVANTS OF THE LIGHT TAROT (AQUARIAN, 1991) draw for today is Two of Spheres, or 2 of Pentacles. The usual RWS image shows a man juggling two giant coins or pentacles. In this image we see an arm holding a set of scales with two of this deck's glowing spheres balanced on each side of the scale. The cup on the left has the symbol for Jupiter, the lower cup on the right has the symbol for Saturn. Saturn is Time, and the laws of the natural world. Jupiter is our particular path through life, the way we pass Time's tests. The companion book says, 'Jupiter stands for Joy, Life and Wealth; Saturn stands for Death, Age and Want. Which will it be?'
I don't know if it's that simple, but I do know my weigh-in this morning was not good! The card suggests a little more balance is due today, but I have a feeling there'll be lots more nibbling of leftovers and Christmas pudding, so balance is going to have to wait.

TAROT CARDS and me have a long love affair. My mother read cards and palms my whole childhood. I remember women from around our apartment complex in early 90's east Los Angeles visiting her and my tia Virginia to receive wisdom, blessings, medicine and tia's famous refried beans and homemade salsa with corn tortilla. Those who powerful women in my life inspired my love of reading tarot. As a scientific minded person, I do believe there is a limit to what cards can offer, and i use them more as an exploitative psychological tool than a fortune medium.

my very first deck"
This is my very first deck. I bought it at a little known shop that had stood in Renton called SACRED TRADITIONS. I bought it with the suggestion of the clerk, Angela, from the Coven of the Flaming Star and i knew it was love at first sight.
I collected allot of decks over the years. Some for their beauty, others for their feel, and some were gifts from family and friends who had given up cards or had no more use for them. I remember visiting my older sister Kendra (catholic lol) at her university when I was just a teenager and reading for her and her roommates. They were always respectful of my old-school views, and it gave me the confidence I needed to explore intuitive reading as a profession.
"The Gustav Klimt" deck is my very favorite. I obsessed over it once I had bought it (on a whim no less) and I used it for the majority of my time working at a pagan book store in downtown Seattle. Usually I just spent my time at the store giving information to interested pagans and helping curious witches with their problems, but I did read cards during that time.
When I'm consulting the oracle, three entities I make a part of the endeavour are three entities I have a close relationship with;
THE MORRIGHAN- yes yes yes, many fear and abhor her, but she has been my patron goddess for a decade and my relationship to her is something seldom understood unless you yourself are connected to her, then you know what i mean when i say she's a bad-ass entity! The Morrighan is more than a goddess of war and death, she rules over the unique mysteries the unknown and walks between the worlds, keenly observing the way a crow observes the world around it. I do not call on her for help or anything like that, i only invite her to be near me and guide me away from illusions and into prophetic truths.
"ALIGENA PANDEMOS- one of the few deities I worship who isn't Celtic in origin or of Turtle Island medicine (Native). Celtic reconstruction is a strong influence on me, but my relationship to Aligena (Aphrodite) is special and mysterious even to me. I have worshipped her since I was literally a child. She has many names and her particular traits are similar to goddesses in many cultures, including Celtic, but dammit "there's SOMETHING about her that at 9 years old I recognized as a real energy. When reading intuitively, she is the energy of abundance and prosperity that surrounds me. When I read professionally, I kept a statue of her wreathed in flowers with coins laid at her feet to symbolise "fortuna "where it surrounds her energy.
BRIGHID- my dearest love, she is who I connect to while cleansing my cards (by smudging them with mugwort and lemon balm/or/rosemary, salt and then wrapping them in black and gold cloth). I usually repeat a charm to her over and over while cleansing my cards right before reading from them.

Keeping a clean and well lighted reading area is special to me. This is my dining room but I often use it when reading from my home. I clean the room beforehand by smudging and singing a blessing of thanks to Spidermother, sacred to my family. I sprinkle spearmint in the corners sometimes or throw salt in the entrances to give it grounded energy. Any decoration I put up or further cleansing i try to keep as low key as possible so that my clients stay focused on the reading, not the artifice of the material world...
But man is it purty ;)

Reader, beware of evening temptations. Be not secure. The sun is down but sin is up. We need a watchman for the night as well as a guardian for the day. O blessed Spirit, keep us from all evil this night. Amen.
