"Earlier this month I was very interested to see a series of posts on Raise the Horns about the top 25 most influential people in the birth of paganism.
When I read Mankey's post, it reinforced my own conception of Goddess spirituality as having a distinctly different lineage and flavor than much of contemporary paganism.
His list, while extensive, useful, and accurate, involves a distinct lack of Goddess scholars, highlighting to me that Goddess spirituality IS a different movement and isn't actually just a Goddess-oriented branch of contemporary paganism. Indeed, almost everyone on his list I'd either never heard of, not read, or don't enjoy their writing. I immediately started to draft a list of my own and came up with 13 women, which seemed delightfully appropriate.
We in the Goddess feminist community have our own path, herstory, and lineage, one that really only began in the 1970's in direct connection to the feminist movement, rather than the pagan movement.
Not necessarily in a particular order, here is my own list of the top thirteen most influential people in the development and articulation of Goddess Spirituality as its own distinct path. (I've been scrambling to finish collecting my thoughts in time to post this list while it is still Women's History Month!) Only one of my own picks also appears on Mankey's list.
* CAROL CHRIST-this feminist scholar is the most skillful and intelligent thealogian of the present day. Christ's influence on my own ideas and concepts has been profound. Her work is academic, focused, and deep, and she wrestles with heavy questions.
I particularly enjoy her
* RIANE EISLER-author of "The Chalice and the Blade", she made a significant contribution to the understanding of the history and development of patriarchy as well as offering a solution in the form of a partnership model of society.
* MARIJA GIMBUTAS-scholar and archaeologist and author of several
* STARHAWK-the first of two on my list who bridge the gap between more "classic" paganism and feminist spirituality, Starhawk had a huge impact on the development of a female-oriented spiritual tradition. Her book "The Spiral Dance" was the first introduction to the Goddess for many women. In keeping with what I find to be a personal lack of CLICK with a lot of pagan authors, I did not particularly enjoy "The Spiral Dance"and actually read it much later than most of the other
* PATRICIA MONGAHAN-recently departed author of Goddess-specific resource
* HALLIE IGLEHART-while less well-known and influential than some of the other women on my list, Hallie was personally very impactful to my own Goddess path, since her
* CYNTHIA ELLER-while Eller's book focused on debunking the "myth of matriarchal prehistory" made her lose popularity among many in the Goddess community (see her clarifying comments here), her scholarly engagement with the complexities of articulating the concepts of feminist spirituality and of thealogy is challenging, illuminating, and offers the opportunity to dig deeply into one's own perspectives. Her book "Living in the Lap of the Goddess" is a thorough exploration of women's spirituality and the Goddess movement.
* CHARLENE SPRETNAK-another rocking writer with a thorough grasp of the sociopolitical and cultural context, value, and purpose of Goddess spirituality, her classic anthology "The Politics of Women's Spirituality "is one of the best and deepest explorations of the concepts, personal experiences, philosophies, and thealogies of "why Goddess".
* KAREN TATE-through her weekly radio show, Voices of the Sacred Feminine, I would venture to say that Tate is one of the most influential and dedicated "Goddess advocates" of the present day.
* ELIZABETH FISHER AND SHIRLEY RANCK-authors of germinal religious education curriculums focused on feminist spirituality and woman-honoring traditions, originally published by the UU Women and Religionprogram, their work with "Rise Up and Call Her Name" and Cakes for the Queen of Heaven "continues to change the lives of women around the country by introducing them to a vision of what the world could be like if the divine was imaged as female.

* SageWoman Magazine (and her editors)-this specifically Goddess-women oriented publication is a treasure and a delight.
" * Feminism and Religion blog-daring to explore the intersection of religion, scholarship, activism, and community, FAR is not specifically Goddess-oriented, but includes Goddess scholars amongst their contributors and weaves a beautiful, living, organic tapestry of the multifaceted web of feminist spirituality in the present day.
I find that feminist spirituality can be distinguished from paganism because of the inclusion of a core"sociopolitical orientation "and distinct sociocultural critique. Feminist spirituality to me is the INTERSECTION OF RELIGION AND POLITICS. It is religious feminism." It may or may not include literal experience of or perception of the Goddess, but it names the female and the female body as sacred, worthy, and in need of defense and uses Goddess symbols, metaphors, stories, and experiences as primary expressions of divinity and the sacred."Source

Humanity has caught the "ascension wave" and is riding it beautifully! It really is as though you had been standing in the surf, waiting for that special wave - that electrifyingly large one. Then it arrived. You caught it brilliantly, and now you are flying with it towards your most breathtaking and enthralling destination - surfer heaven, your awakening into Reality!
It does seem to many of you, to put it rather graphically, that "all hell is breaking loose" in many places across the planet. Do not be alarmed. The old order is merely in the process of disintegrating and pieces are flying every which way, as in an explosion. When the dust and debris settle, a gentle peace and an uplifting calm, the one for which so many have been hoping and praying, will prevail.
You are on course and on schedule for lives of joy and abundance, totally free from fear and worry as the disintegration of the old order makes way for the new order based most firmly on the Golden Rule (always treat others with the love and respect with which you would wish to be treated) which all will honor in every situation.
The time for lying, manipulating, cheating, deceiving, and betrayal is ending, permanently.The Love from which you were all created can no longer be denied or hidden as It wells up inside the hearts of all on Earth. And in truth you are still doing so. Nevertheless, that does not appear to be the case as you struggle and worry within the illusory environment that you invented and then constructed to experience life without Love. You imagined that there would be many satisfactory alternatives to the infinite perfection of Love, and you have been severely disappointed.
Those of you who have had children or worked with them and have observed them growing up understand the sadness that occurs when you see them doing things which will cause them or others suffering, things that you have maybe warned them of, warnings which they chose either not to listen to or to ignore, because they "believed" that they knew better.
As you have been told before many times, and not only by those in the spiritual realms, beliefs can be very dangerous and often seem to have the power to mislead you mightily. You have all undergone or know someone who has undergone the "shock" of discovering that a belief to which they clung loyally and ferociously was not only misguided but quite wrong.
The only Truth in which you can safely believe is the eternal Truth that is God. Within the illusion you have effectively hidden that under a cloak of darkness and ignorance, and then, from age to age and culture to culture, made up your own miserable, wrongheaded, and frequently immoral substitutes which were then proclaimed as dogma to which others were expected to pay homage.
Humanity is now, and very successfully, making a concerted and collective effort to discard the dogmas and wrongheaded doctrines that have for so long led to intense suffering and pain for many of you. All beliefs are being questioned, and rightly so, and unless convincing evidence supporting them is produced they are publicly shown to be erroneous, thus encouraging those who had allowed themselves to be ruled by them, and have had their basic freedoms trampled upon, to cast them aside and reclaim their rightful self-ownership.
If you wish to follow a system of rules and regulations, for whatever reason, as long as they have no deleterious effect on another, you should feel free to do so. But to impose or attempt to impose your beliefs and opinions on others by establishing rules and regulations that they must abide by is quite unconscionable.
God, your Father, created you FREE! And yet, within the illusion, you have attempted time and again to enslave one another. And of course the reason for trying to enslave others was born of fear. To be alone, small, insignificant, and abandoned in the vast universe, which the illusion appears to encompass, is terrifying.
Miraculously, fortuitously, by the grace of God, the illusion is illusory! It cannot contain even one of you. However, as is your experience over the eons, you can "choose, "as you have done, to believe in it and thereby allow it to contain and control you.Now the time has come for it to be discarded.
The game is over, and you "will"return to awareness of your eternal and divine nature as essential aspects or, if you prefer, particles of God. No conscious entity is separated from its Source. It never can be, it never will be. It can only choose to be unaware of its true nature. And even that choice has a sell-by date at which point awareness, full consciousness "must and will" be re-established.
When that happens, infinite joy will replace all emotions, feelings, and sensations that are not in alignment with it. In the end, "only" eternal joy is possible, because that is the Will of God for all of creation, and you are rapidly approaching that end, that inviolate sell-by date.You are surrounded and enveloped in the field of divine Love, which is to dissolve back into nothingness the illusion in which it seems you have been trapped and imprisoned for so long.
Focus on that truth whenever you go to your quiet inner space. Intend that all become aware of it, and relax in the certainty of your coming awakening.Your loving brother, Jesus.

(Fox News) New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady may not need the help, but some witches are planning to cast a spell to put an end to Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow's miraculous season.
Witches Lorelei and Lori Bruno were scheduled to hold a seance at noon today - Friday the 13th - at Haven Crow Corner in Salem, Mass. to fix a win for the Pats.
"I'm going to raise the energy of the universe and send out all the good mojo," Lorelei told the Boston Herald. "Lori will call in the Angels."
The good witches won't hex Tebow, as it's "not their way," but plan on setting up an altar with a hand-sewn Brady puppet and mojo bags filled with herbs and stones for every Patriots team member.
At the altar, the witches will chant, "Tom Brady will see what he needs to see, be where he needs to be and will take the Patriots to another victory."
Hunky QB Brady, married to supermodel Gisele Bundchen, is a bigger draw for the witches of Salem than another recent marquee recipient of their spells, Charlie Sheen.
"You know, when we had our spiritual intervention for Charlie Sheen last year, we had a hard time getting all the girls to come," laughed Lorelei. "But when we told them this Circle was for Tom Brady, oh, everybody will be there!"
"We want the true champion to come out on Saturday night," Bruno added. "But since we live in Patriot Land, it's red, white and blue and make the dream come true!"

Es la 'epoca en que la Diosa se recupera despu'es de dar a luz al Dios. El Dios es un joven fuerte y su poder es sentido en los d'ias m'as largos. El calor fertiliza la Tierra.
Los hielos comienzan a descongelarse, y la flora y fauna vuelven a la vida, despu'es de haber estado dormidos durante el invierno.
Los nombres alternativos de esta festividad son: Imbolc, Brigantia, Candlemas, Lupercur, Candelaria, Disting, Oimelc, D'ia de Brid, Brigit's Day.
La palabra Imbolc significa literalmente "en el vientre" (de la Madre). La semilla que fue plantada en el solsticio de invierno est'a creciendo. Oimelc significa "leche de ovejas", tambi'en es usado este nombre, debido a que tambi'en es la 'epoca de nacimiento de las cr'ias.
Tradicionalmente Imbolc honra a las semillas que bajo Tierra empiezan a germinar.
Es la primera celebraci'on mayor del a~no. Corresponde al despertar de la naturaleza, es un Sabbat de purificaci'on, una celebraci'on de luz y fertilidad, se le conoce como la fiesta de las luces o candelaria.
Es una 'epoca propicia para iniciaciones, autodedicaciones, tambi'en se considera que es la 'epoca apropiada para iniciar nuevos proyectos, comprometernos con nosotros mismos.
Antiguamente en Europa era celebrada con enormes llamaradas, antorchas y fuego en toda forma, para nosotros, el fuego representa nuestra propia iluminaci'on e inspiraci'on, as'i como luz y calor.
Imbolc celebra los d'ias que, visiblemente, van siendo cada vez m'as largos y nos anima a limpiarlo todo y a prepararse para la atareada estaci'on que se avecina.
Los antiguos Celtas denominaban este d'ia "D'ia de Brigith", en honor a la triple diosa de este nombre.
En Imbolc piden inspiraci'on y gu'ia para sus nuevos planes y proyectos, y le dedican algunos pensamientos a los misterios ocultos que est'an teniendo lugar en la oscuridad. Al igual que la tierra oscura gesta la vida que va a surgir y a florecer en primavera, honran sus momentos de poder oscuro. que gestan el crecimiento que les va a sostener en los c'alidos y soleados meses de creatividad que est'an por venir.
Una de las celebraciones m'as hermosas es la costumbre de poner velas en todas las ventanas de la casa, empezando la tarde de v'ispera, dej'andolas encendidas hasta el amanecer. Adem'as este d'ia se utiliza para hacer todas las velas que utilizar'as durante los otros Sabbats, tambi'en se hacen rituales de purificaci'on y limpieza para la casa. Lo importante es festejar este d'ia honrando las artes po'eticas y femeninas, es una de las fiestas m'as dedicadas a las mujeres solteras que buscan un buen esposo, y casadas que piden por su felicidad.
RITUAL
Como todo ritual, debe comenzar con los pasos entregados en "Preparaci'on para rituales".
ALTAR: Para este ritual usaremos vela anaranjada previamente ungida con aceite de almizcle, canela, ol'ibano o romero. Se puede usar una flor blanca.
Una vez realizadas las invocaciones, col'ocate enfrente del altar y di:
Este es el tiempo de la fiesta de antorchas. Cuando cada l'ampara arde y brilla para darle la bienvenida al renacimiento del Dios. Celebro a la Diosa, celebro al Dios, toda la Tierra celebra debajo de su manto de sue~no. !Luz para la oscuridad!. Ahora el Dios padre ha alcanzado el cenit de su viaje, 'el gira para darle la cara a la Diosa madre, aunque separados ellos son uno.
Prendes la vela anaranjada mientras dices:
El Dios ha realizado la mitad de su viaje, adelante ve la luz de la Diosa, y el inicio de una nueva vida, despu'es de este periodo de descanso.
Tomas la vela del altar y comienzas a caminar en deocil (hacia la izquierda para el hemisferio sur) alrededor del c'irculo diciendo:
Todo el campo est'a envuelto en invierno, el aire est'a enfriado y la escarcha cubre la tierra. Pero el Se~nor del Sol, carnudo del bosque y de los animales salvajes ha renacido de la beningna Diosa madre, se~nora de la fertilidad !Salve gran Dios! !Salve Gran Diosa!
Detente frente al altar, con la vela levantada. Mira fijamente la llama, visualiza la vida emergiendo del sue~no del invierno, con renovada energ'ia y fortaleza.
Despu'es de esto, pueden seguir los trabajos m'agicos, si se requieren.
Contin'ua con el banquete (comida y bebida). Despu'es de hacerlo, despide a la Diosa madre, al Dios padre y a los elementos.
El ritual ha terminado.
CORRESPONDENCIAS PARA EL RITUAL DE IMBOLC:
ASPECTO DE LAS DIVINIDADES: la Diosa en su aspecto de virgen y fertilizadora. El Dios, en su aspecto joven y de ni~no Sol.INCIENSOS: jazm'in, s'andalo, ol'ibano, rosas.COLORES: blanco, amarillo, rojo, naranja (colores c'alidos)BEBIDAS: vino, leche, jugo de frutas.HIERBAS: campanilla, serbal de los cazadores, las primeras flores del a~no.COMIDA: productos l'acteos, platillos de crema agria, comidas especiadas.PIEDRAS: todas las piedras blancas y de colores c'alidos (cuarzo blanco, citrino, turmalina amarilla, rubi, granate, zirconia, coral, agata roja, topacio).TRADICIONES: encender todas las luces despu'es de la puesta de Sol (s'olo por unos momentos), prender velas en cada habitaci'on en honor al renacimiento del Sol.
ACTIVIDADES DE IMBOLC (EL FAMOSO QUE HACEMOS EN EL RITUAL):
- Puedes quemar los objetos utilizados en Yule para alejar el invierno.- Hechizos de autopurificaci'on.- Hacer un c'irculo con velas.- Limpiar y purificar la casa (con la escoba ritual).- Limpiar el espacio sagrado, el altar y los instrumentos.- Colocar tres semillas de trigo sobre la puerta principal como s'imbolo de la Diosa triple y dejarlas hasta Ostara cuando deber'an ser quemadas.- Buscar piedras que se utilizar'an en el c'irculo y en el Imbolc del a~no siguiente devolverlas a la naturaleza y buscar unas nuevas.- Encender una vela en cada abertura (ventanas, puertas) de la casa o habitaci'on. Se comienza con la puesta de Sol del d'ia de Imbolc y se deja hasta el amanecer del d'ia siguiente.- Limpiar y consagrar velas para los rituales y festividades del a~no.- Comidas y bebidas sagradas: Frutas y flores de la estaci'on. Todas aquellas comidas y bebidas que lleven l'acteos. Si no los toleras, si quieres, para el fest'in sencillo algo m'as elaborado, bollitos se fruta, masitas, pan, sopas cremosas, vino o jugo de frutas.

The first thing I'll say about this book is that if you already own a copy of Francis King's "Astral Projection, Ritual Magic, and Alchemy" don't get this book because you already have it. I can't count the number of occult libraries I've seen, including my own, where both These texts contain some of the most core teachings of Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, William Wynn Westcott, Dr. Edward Berridge, Annie Horniman, Florence Farr, Elaine Simpson...
Oh, and Francis King...Just kidding! This book is no more written by Francis King than the Golden Dawn rituals were written by Regardie or The Declaration of Independence was written by Ronald McDonald. While the side of the book may seem misleading at first, the front of the book is honest: "Works by S.L. MacGregor Mathers and Others, "Edited" by Francis King." King does write a rather informative synopsis of the texts in the forward, and an informative, sometimes amusing, brief history of the last few centuries of the Western Mysteries, and the Golden Dawn.
This book is definitely a must read for someone who has already been practicing Golden Dawn magic for a while.
