"Serialized in the May, June, and July 1943 issues of Astounding Science Fiction", Fritz Leiber's "Gather, Darkness!" might well be called the antithesis of Walter Miller's "A Canticle for Leibowitz" were it not for the fact that it appeared more than a decade earlier. Like Miller's novel, "Gather, Darkness!" takes place several centuries after a nuclear holocaust, with learning and scholarship preserved by a powerful religious institution. Unlike Miller's Catholic Church, Leiber's Hierarchy is thoroughly venal and corrupt and uses its stranglehold on knowledge to rule tyrannically over the post-apocalyptic world. Indeed, the religion of "the Great God" seems largely to be a sham, a useful lie created by scientists to bring order in the aftermath of civilization's downfall. Consequently, it's strongly implied that all the story's instances of "magic" or "miracles" are in fact the result of advanced technology utilized by the Hierarchy in order to gull the common folk into uncritical acceptance of its claims to a divine mandate.
The protagonist of "Gather, Darkness!" is Armon Jarles, a young priest, who's begun to have doubts about the Hierarchy's claims.
Brother Jarles, priest of the First and Outermost Circle, novice in the Hierarchy, swallowed hard against his churning anger; bent every effort to make his face a mask-not only to the commoners, for that was something every member of the Hierarchy was taught to do, but to his brother priests as well.
Any priest who hated the Hierarchy as he did during these frightening spasms of rage must be mad.
But priests could not go mad-at least, not without the Hierarchy knowing of it, as it knew of everything else.
A misfit then? But a priest was fitted to his job with infinite precision and foresight, the very outlines of his personality measured as if with an atomic probe. A priest could not hate his work.
No, he must be mad. And the Hierarchy must be concealing the fact from him for its own inscrutable purposes.
Or else-everything to the contrary-he was right.The conflict within the young priest quickly comes to a head when he witnesses an older priest, Brother Chulian, first attempt to force a young woman (who also happens to be an old love of Jarles) to serve in the Sanctuary against her will and then, when she obstinately refuses this honor, accuses her of being a witch. Casting off his robes of office, including the high-tech "halo" that illuminated his head, Jarles addresses the people of the Hierarchy's capital city.

That checked the beginnings of a panicky flight. Eyes turned to stare at him stupidly. They had not yet begun to comprehend what had happened. But when a priest spoke, one listened.
"You have been taught that ignorance is good. I tell you it is evil!
"You have been taught that to think is evil. I tell you it is good!
"You have been told that it is your destiny to toil night and day, until your backs ache to breaking and your hands blister under the calluses. I tell you it is the destiny of all men to look for easier ways!
"You have let the priests rule your lives. I tell you that you must rule yourselves!
"You believe that the priests have supernatural powers. I tell you they have no powers you could not wield yourselves!
"You believe that the priests are chosen to serve the Great God and transmit his commands. But-if there is a god anywhere-each one of you, in his ignorant heart, knows more of him than the mightiest archpriest.
"You have been told that the Great God rules the universe-earth and sky. I tell you the Great God is a fake!"With those words, Brother Jarles becomes a heretic and a wanted man. He flees Megatheopolis, with the knowledge of the Hierarchy, falls in with a rebel movement known as "the Witchcraft," just as the priests had hoped. Though the Witchcraft opposes the Hierarchy and espouses many views with which Jarles can agree, he also sees that, at base, their main point of disagreement with the servants of the Great God is that "they "are the world's tyrants and not the Witchcraft itself. Just like the Hierarchy, the Witchcraft uses technology to trick and deceive and their beliefs are little more than a mask for their lust for power.
I have to admit that I don't quite know how I feel about "Gather, Darkness!" On the one hand, the story seems to be a solid, if somewhat clich'ed, critique of the dangers inherent in any powerful organization, particularly one composed of individuals who believe themselves to "know better" than the average person. On the other hand, much of it comes off as rather shallow, even puerile, especially its facile portrayal of religion and religious faith. But, even at his worst, Leiber is a terrific stylist, whose dialog is engaging and whose wit enjoyable. Both are in evidence in "Gather, Darkness!" as is a fast-paced plot that never once wastes time with useless exposition or indulgent world-building. It's a quick read and a fun one. Whether it's more than that each reader must decide for himself.

I recently had a conversation with a stranger about spiritual things. She was a young woman who was at first blush totally disinterested in the things of God. When she saw my Bible she actually wrinkled her nose and scoffed at me for having one.
She at first denied even believing in God, but as we talked the truth leaked out around the corners. Confused thoughts tumbled out of her mouth as she tried to describe her understanding of God. She could not understand Scripture, said it made no sense to her.
As we talked I was saddened by her obvious spiritual blindness. It was as though a great gulf had been fixed between us and I had no way to get her over to my side. She had many questions about God and snippets of knowledge that were more worldly than anything else. Her questions were antagonistic and even hostile as though she was daring me to have an answer. I doubt she would have known if I were lying to her had I just verbally replied, but I asked her to read each answer straight out of His Word. Before I was a Christian, no one really spoke to me about Christ in a salvific manner as I did with her, so I don't recall having the responses I saw in her. There is a specific kind of darkness in the eyes of a person who does not know Christ. Jesus said, "The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. (Matthew 6:22-23a)
This was heartbreaking to behold. This young woman who was a literal stranger to me when we began to talk has weighed heavily on my heart and mind. There seemed to be nothing I could say that would unlock her prison of unbelief. The worst part is that she has some very rudimentary glimmers of knowledge but without the Spirit of God there is no hope of understanding. At one point she said that she knew she did not understand what she was reading out of the Bible. I asked her to read 1 Cor. 2:10-15
"For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words."But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. Her eyes remained darkened and she seemed to plead with me to "make" her understand as though I held some power to persuade her. After a time, it appeared that she desperately wanted to be able to be like me. As I explained with verse after verse the difference between the redeemed and the lost, the Light and darkness, and why there is only one way to have a relationship with God she grew more agitated, frustrated that it made no sense to her. This was sorrowful for me. After a while we parted company in a friendly manner. However, we went away as we came- one saved and one lost.
As a result of this time spent with this person (who was a literal stranger to me) these verses are clearer than they ever were before. To be able to see spiritual blindness is a frightening thing to behold. There is a very real sense of powerlessness about this because I realized in application what I know in a theological sense: who gets saved is not up to me or anyone else. We can present every argument perfectly, be the best apologist possible and if the Spirit of God is not illuminating and revealing no change will take place. We are only conduit carrying the power of God where He wills and to whom He chooses. He did not choose to draw her into His family that day.
I may have been scattering seed on hard ground, or perhaps beginning to furrow the ground of her heart. Who am I to question His wisdom in this matter? Who am I to say that God has made a mistake in this case? I am not omniscient as God is, nor do I have the long view He has on her life. She may still come to know Him at some point in her life. My responsibility and my joy is to present Him in the most faithful way possible to the unbeliever and to leave the results to the Lord.
The Spirit of God goes where ever it wishes and "will" draw those whom He chose. Should I have the opportunity to meet her again, I pray I will know that the time we spent together will have begun the work of change in her heart.

"Hidden Histories: Palestine and the Eastern Mediterranean" (by Basem L. Ra'ad, London, Pluto Press, 2010) is a groundbreaking read on Israel and the Bible.
The majority of modern works that examine the Palestine/Israel conflict do so with a strong emphasis on the catastrophe ("nakba") of 1948, what led up to it and what followed.
Prof. Basem L. Ra'ad's new book HIDDEN HISTORIES adds a new component to the discussion. The catastrophe is minimized to explore other perspectives more fully. Two perspectives are developed, in spite of the fact that the dominant media discourse orchestrated by the US, Europe, and Israel would rather these perspectives were not heard.

The first is an examination of the region through archaeology and linguistics. The duality does not highlight the uniqueness of a "chosen people" in their exile or return. Instead, what is examined is the commonality of a stable and adaptive indigenous population.
The second perspective looks at the modern Israeli narrative - an biased ethnic history used to justify the annexation of land and a declared intent to settle all of Eretz Israel as a "divine right" of Jewish people.
Ra'ad turns this perspective and focuses on the appropriation of cultural artifacts, heritage, language, and the beliefs of the indigenous Palestinians. This has happened to such an extent that Palestinians themselves are becoming unaware of their own heritage and unwittingly reflecting Israeli mythology about their background.
This is one of the most powerful ways in which a dominant society controls and culturally deletes another culture and its history. People become others, wanderers in the desert, true "Arabs" who arrived with the Islamic conquests of the seventh century, whose true home is beyond the borders of modern Israel.
It has been noted more than once in both revisionist and traditional historical writings on Zionism that "early Zionists did not shy away from seeing the Palestinians as rooted in the land from prehistoric times... Up to the 1930s, many Zionist theorists saw the Palestinian farmers or "fellahin" as descendants of Judean peasantry, as Jews who converted to Islam to avoid taxation."
Ra'ad argues that the Israelis paint themselves as the natives "and have relegated the Palestinians to cultural invisibility or active demonization within the Zionist system." Jews then act like they are merely reclaiming their "divinely ordained" land. It's a powerful narrative, one that fundamental Christians buy into.
It makes sense to believers until they see the historical and archaeological evidence of the existence of a Canaanite culture. Its geography was widespread and a precursor to many of the myths and traditions of the region.
Ra'ad argues that "Hebrew is merely a script style that is known in Aramaic as square Aramaic" and is not the ancient language of the land.
Earlier languages, which are much more similar to Arabic, cannot be considered "paleo-Hebrew" or "ancient-Hebrew." Arabic is shown to be "a native regional language," not imported with the Arab Muslim conquest of the seventh century. It is the "live continuation and natural extension of the earlier languages as they were submerged." In other words, it is not a foreign language to the region.

It is one that naturally evolved with organic adaptations to the trade, commerce, and warfare prevalent in the region. Whether it is artificial changes on the region's map, "ancient names on the ground, or theories about ancient languages, there is a great deal of invention, guile, backdating, and fabricated justification."
For the Israelis, if the God-covenanted land narrative falls apart, their whole universe disappears. They become just another group attempting to survive by way of dominance over a weaker group.
To prevent that, the narrative needs to be constructed both forwards and backwards: from biblical time lines to create a lineage, backwards from current times.
But Ra'ad's work creates a discussion that poses huge problems for the narrative.
What needs to be decolonized are minds - of Palestinians, Christians, and Jews. But given the media dominance of the US, Europe, and Israel, it will be a struggle.
"Hidden Histories" is an intriguing and challenging work leading toward a more honest understanding of the Eastern Mediterranean. It also serves as a warning showing how historical narratives can be manipulated or created to disown a weaker group. In his Christmas Urbi et Orbi (To the City and the World) Message, Pope Benedict XVI said:
"Dear brothers and sisters listening to me here in Rome and throughout the world, I joyfully proclaim the message of Christmas: God became man; he came to dwell among us. God is not distant: he is 'Emmanuel, God-with-us. He is no stranger: he has a face, the face of Jesus. This message is ever new, ever surprising, for it surpasses even our most daring hope.
First of all, because it is not merely a proclamation: it is an event, a happening, which credible witnesses saw, heard and touched in the person of Jesus of Nazareth! Being in his presence, observing his works and hearing his words, they recognised in Jesus the Messiah; and seeing him risen, after his crucifixion, they were certain that he was true man and true God, the only-begotten Son come from the Father, full of grace and truth (cf. Jn 1:14).
'The Word became flesh'. Before this revelation we once more wonder: how can this be? The Word and the flesh are mutually opposed realities; how can the eternal and almighty Word become a frail and mortal man? There is only one answer: Love. Those who love desire to share with the beloved, they want to be one with the beloved, and Sacred Scripture shows us the great love story of God for his people which culminated in Jesus Christ.
God in fact does not change: he is faithful to himself. He who created the world is the same one who called Abraham and revealed his name to Moses: 'I am who I am'... the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob... a God merciful and gracious, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness (cf. Ex 3:14-15; 34:6). God does not change; he is Love, ever and always. In himself he is communion, unity in Trinity, and all his words and works are directed to communion. The Incarnation is the culmination of creation. When Jesus, the Son of God incarnate, was formed in the womb of Mary by the will of the Father and the working of the Holy Spirit, creation reached its high point. The ordering principle of the universe, the Logos, began to exist in the world, in a certain time and space...this truth is revealed to those who receive it in faith, for it is a mystery of love. ONLY THOSE WHO ARE OPEN TO LOVE ARE ENVELOPED IN THE LIGHT OF CHRISTMAS. So it was on that night in Bethlehem, and so it is today. The Incarnation of the Son of God is an event which occurred within history, while at the same time transcending history. In the night of the world a new light was kindled, one which lets itself be seen by the simple eyes of faith, by the meek and humble hearts of those who await the Saviour. If the truth were a mere mathematical formula, in some sense it would impose itself by its own power. But if Truth is Love, it calls for faith, for the "yes" of our hearts.
And what do our hearts, in effect, seek, if not a Truth which is also Love? Children seek it with their questions, so disarming and stimulating; young people seek it in their eagerness to discover the deepest meaning of their life; adults seek it in order to guide and sustain their commitments in the family and the workplace; the elderly seek it in order to grant completion to their earthly existence.
'The Word became flesh'. The proclamation of Christmas is also a light for all peoples, for the collective journey of humanity. "Emmanuel", God-with-us, has come as King of justice and peace. We know that his Kingdom is not of this world, and yet it is more important than all the kingdoms of this world. It is like the leaven of humanity: were it lacking, the energy to work for true development would flag: the impulse to work together for the common good, in the disinterested service of our neighbour, in the peaceful struggle for justice. Belief in the God who desired to share in our history constantly encourages us in our own commitment to that history, for all its contradictions. IT IS A SOURCE OF HOPE FOR EVERYONE WHOSE DIGNITY IS OFFENDED AND VIOLATED, SINCE THE ONE BORN IN BETHLEHEM CAME TO SET EVERY MAN AND WOMAN FREE FROM THE SOURCE OF ALL ENSLAVEMENT.
May the light of Christmas shine forth anew in the Land where Jesus was born, and inspire Israelis and Palestinians to strive for a just and peaceful coexistence. May the comforting message of the coming of Emmanuel ease the pain and bring consolation amid their trials to the beloved Christian communities in Iraq and throughout the Middle East; may it bring them comfort and hope for the future and bring the leaders of nations to show them effective solidarity. May it also be so for those in Haiti who still suffer in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and the recent cholera epidemic. May the same hold true not only for those in Colombia and Venezuela, but also in Guatemala and Costa Rica, who recently suffered natural disasters.
May the birth of the Saviour open horizons of lasting peace and authentic progress for the peoples of Somalia, Darfur and C^ote d'Ivoire; may it promote political and social stability in Madagascar; may it bring security and respect for human rights in Afghanistan and in Pakistan; may it encourage dialogue between Nicaragua and Costa Rica; and may it advance reconciliation on the Korean peninsula.
May the birth of the Saviour strengthen the spirit of faith, patience and courage of the faithful of the Church in mainland China, that they may not lose heart through the limitations imposed on their freedom of religion and conscience but, persevering in fidelity to Christ and his Church, may keep alive the flame of hope. What struck me the most in our Holy Father's Christmas message were these words: "Only those who are open to love are enveloped in the light of Christmas." Last night, I attended a Christmas Eve Mass at Our Lady Immaculate Parish in Athol, Massachusetts. I was in a cheerful mood (as always) and prayerfully preparing for Mass when I was approached by one of the parish's deacons who began to lecture me about making room for "elderly people" who were in need of a seat. When I calmly informed him that no one had approached us (I was with family) to ask us if we could slide down the pew, he answered with dripping sarcasm, "Consider yourself approached."
Was the deacon's attitude Christ-like? Is it evidence of a person who is "open to love"? Or does it not betray a lack of charity? The homily at Mass, delivered by Father Richard Jakubauskas, was largely about the need to embrace love and kindness toward one another. But words are cheap when they are not backed up with concrete action.
Jesus condemned the Pharisees because they were all show. Their actions did not correspond to their preaching. Is that not the case here? Lumen Gentium of the Second Vatican Council tells us that, "Ministers of the lesser rank are also sharers in the mission and grace of the supreme priest. In the first place among these ministers are deacons, who inasmuch as they are dispensers of Christ's mysteries and servants of the Church, should keep themselves free from every vice and stand before men as personifications of goodness and friends of God (cf. 1 Tm 3: 8-10, 12-13). Clerics, who are called by the Lord and are set aside as his portion in order to prepare themselves for the various ministerial offices under the watchful eye of spiritual shepherds, are bound to bring their hearts and minds into accord with this special election (which is theirs). They will accomplish this by their constancy in prayer, "BY THEIR BURNING LOVE", and by their unremitting recollection of whatever is true, just and of good repute.." (No. 41).
Only those who are open to love are enveloped in the light of Christmas. There is a deacon in Athol who should meditate very carefully on those words. Although this unhappy soul attempted to distract me from prayer and to squash my joyous spirit, he failed. Emmanuel: God with us...even if others be against us!

You'll need a natural stone, around the size of a quarter. Use the hammer to break the stone into at least 2 pieces. Gather up all the bits and put them in the bag, along with the feather. The word Decapitation is derived from the Latin root de meaning "less" and Capitis meaning "head". Decapitation therefore is described as rendering a body headless. Decapitation has been used as capital punishment for over 1,000 years, and in almost all cultures. Various weapons, including the axe, sword and guillotines have been used for this purpose. Compared with other methods like hanging, decapitation is considered the most effective mode of killing someone, with the least pain for the shortest amount of time. It is however considered the most painful method in Chinese culture, as the Chinese consider that nothing is more painful than sending a headless body to the spirits of the ancestors. The executioner in case of decapitation is known as a headsman, and his skill counts in inflicting the least possible pain with one strike.

Marcus Tullius Cicero
Marcus Tullius Cicero, better known in history as "Cicero", was born on January 3,106 BC in Arpinum, Roman Republic and died on December 7, 43 BC at the age of 63 years in Formia, Roman Republic. He wrote many philippics against Antony. A philippic is an extremely bitter and hot speech delivered to condemn a political opponent. The term was derived from such speeches written against Phillip II of Macedon in the fourth century BC. Highly annoyed, Antony ordered his decapitation for this act. Cicero was arrested when trying to flee, and was beheaded on the spot. His hands were also cut in retaliation for writing the philippics. Just before execution, Cicero exposing his neck and throat to his killers, said "There is nothing proper about what you are doing, soldier, but do try to kill me properly". Following the tradition of Marius and Sula, who used to display the enemy heads, Antony too ordered the display of Cicero's head and hands on the rostrum of Forum Romanum.

Anne Boleyn
Anne Boleyn was born to Thomas Boley, the Earl of Witershire and Lady Elizabeth Howard, in 1501, at Blickling Hall, Norfolk or Hever Castle, Kent and died on May 19, 1536 at the age of 35 years in Tower of London. From 1533 to 1536, she was the Queen of England as the second wife of King Henry VIII. The King accused her of high treason, adultery, incest, and witchcraft. She was arrested and sent to the Tower of London. On May 6, 1536 she wrote a letter to the king which contained "Try me, good king, but let me have a lawful trial, and let not my sworn enemies sit as my accusers and judges; yea let me receive an open trial, for my truth shall fear no open flame; then shall you see either my innocence cleared, your suspicion and conscience satisfied, the ignominy and slander of the world stopped, or my guilt openly declared." The biased jury however gave the verdict against her to please the King and she was ultimately decapitated becoming perhaps, one of the most famous decapitations in history.
3. FRIEDRICH HEINRICH KARL HAARMANN
Friedrich Heinrich Karl Haarmann
Friedrich Heinrich Karl Haarmann, also known as the Butcher of Hanover, was born to poor parents on October 25, 1879 in Hanover, German Empire and died on April 15, 1925 at the age of 45 years. He entered a Military Academy at the age of 16and did quite satisfactorily for two years, but started suffering from fits, after which he was discharged. He was accused of killing 27 boys during 1918 and 1924. His trial attracted nationwide attention and as the term Serial Killer did not exist in that time, he was named as "werewolf". After a two week trial he was found guilty and convicted of murdering 24 boys. He was sentenced to death and was decapitated by guillotine on April 15, 1925. He did not appeal against the verdict. Before decapitation he uttered his last words "I repent, but I do not fear death".
4. LEONARD GEORGE SIFFLEET
Leonard George Siffleet
Leonard George Siffleet was born on January 14, 1916 in Gunnedah, New South Wales and died on October 24, 1943 in Aitape, Papua New Guinea. In 1930 he moved to Sydney seeking a police job, but he could not get it on account of his weak eyesight. However, he succeeded in joining the Services Reconnaissance Department and was sent on a mission to Papua New Guinea, along with two other colleagues. Tribesmen captured all of them and handed over them to the Japanese. All of them were interrogated and tortured. Finally they were each decapitated. Stifflees photograph of decapitation is preserved and speaks about the reality of the war.
5. DANIEL PEARL
Daniel Pearl
Daniel Pearl was born to Ruth and Judea Pearl, on October 10, 1963 in Princeton, New Jersey, U.S. and died on February 1, 2002 at the age of 38 years in Karachi, Pakistan. He was raised in Los Angeles, California and was educated at Portola Middle School and Birmingham High School. Judea Pearl had narrated his Jewish family background in his LA Times article Roots in the Holy Land. While working as a bureau chief of The Wall Street Journal, based in Bombay India, he was kidnapped. He was on a mission to investigate links between Richard Reid and Al Qaeda. His captors decapitated him and a British National Ahmed Omar Sheikh was in turn sentenced to death in July 2002.
6. AUGUSTE VAILLANT
Auguste Vaillant
Auguste Vaillant was born on December 27, 1861 in Mezieres, Ardennes, France and died on February3, 1894 at the age of 32 years in Paris, France. He is known for his bomb attack on the French Chamber of Deputies. He was captured soon after throwing the homemade bomb from the public Gallery. He was an anarchist and as such did not like the state. The device was too weak to cause fatalities, it did however cause many injuries. Valliant confessed that his aim was not to kill but to injure as many deputies as he could in retaliation to the execution of Ravachol. He was sentenced to death and decapitated on December 9, 1893.
7. TAHVO PUTKONEN
Decapitation
Tahvo Putkonen was born on October 30, 1795 in Suonenjoki, Finland and died in Pieksamak. He was a Finnish farmer who killed another farmer, Lesse Hirvonen. In 1822, he had invited many guests during a celebration. While heavily drunk, Putkonen attacked Hirvonen and struck him on his head. Hirvonen did not survive the head injury and died after two days. He was arrested and sentenced to death after a long trial. He appealed many times, but all of his appeals were rejected, and he was ultimately decapitated with an axe on July 30, 1823. The axe used in decapitation has been preserved at the Museum of Crime in Vantaa.
8. MARGARET POLE THE BLESSED
Margaret Pole the Blessed
Margaret Pole the Blessed, Countess of Salisbury was born on August 14, 1473 in Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Somerset, England and died on May 27, 1541 in the Tower of London at the age of 67 years. She was charged of high treason, which she denied. She was decapitated at the orders of King Henry VIII, on May 27, 1541 and beatified by Pope Leo XIII on December 29, 1886.
9. MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS
Mary, Queen of Scots
Mary, Queen of Scots was born to James V, King of Scots and Mary of Guise at Linlithgow Palace, Linlithgow, Scotland on December 8, 1542 and died on February 8, 1587. Mary was made to abdicate in favor of her one year old son. She sought refuge from Queen Elizabeth Queen, whose throne Mary had once claimed as of her. Mary was tried for treason and having been imprisoned for eighteen and a half years was sentenced to death by decapitation. The headsman had to strike twice for the purpose. Her last words were "In manus tuas, Domine, commendo spiritum meum" meaning "Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit."
10. ROBERT DEVEREUX, 2ND EARL OF ESSEX

Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex was born to Walter Devereux and Lettice Knollys on November 10, 1565 at Netherwood, Herefordshire. He was an overambitious general and was arrested after an unsuccessful coup de tat attempt. He was tried on charges of treason on February 19, 1601. He was found guilty and decapitated on Tower Green on February 1601. He was the last person who was decapitated in the Tower of London. His headsman Thomas Derrick struck him thrice to complete decapitation.
CONCLUSION
Not only the criminals but also great men like St. Paul, Mansur Al-Hallaj and Sarmad Shaheed too had been decapitated for their firm belief in truth. Sarmad Shaheed, the renowned Muslim mystic poet was decapitated under the orders of the Mogul Emperor Aurengzeb. Mansoor Al-Hallah was also a great Muslim mystic who was decapitated on March 26,922 at the orders of Abbasid Caliph Al-Muqtadir. French Scholar, Massignon has described the decapitation of Mansur Al-Hallaj in detail.

Have you ever asked this question? Sure you have those casseroles or soups that taste better the second day but for the most part I bet you would prefer a freshly cooked meal over one that you have to warm up in the microwave.
I know plenty of people who will flat out not eat leftovers simply because that food is not the full meal deal they've already had. For them leftovers are considered second-rate food and could never be as satisfying as the first course.
If no one really loves leftovers then...WHY DO WE SO OFTEN GIVE OUR GOD, OUR SPOUSES AND OUR KIDS WHAT IS LEFT OVER OF US? Don't they deserve the full meal deal from us? I'm quite certain they do.

MY GOD IS FIRST and I should devote time each day in Prayer and reading scripture. I should also be serving others both in the church and where there is need.
MY WIFE IS SECOND and I should focus on the needs of my wife and make sure to always pursue her.
"BY THE WAY - THE DAY WE QUIT PURSING OUR SPOUSES IS THE DAY THAT SATAN WILL AND HE WILL DO EVERYTHING IN HIS POWER TO WIDEN THE GAP BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR SPOUSE. "
MY KIDS ARE THIRD but they are not any less important. They need me more than they need "stuff" and they need me to be their primary disciple teacher...not the church. They need me to teach them how to Go into this world and live life with Christ in the center of their lives.
BOTTOM LINE - None of them deserve my leftovers!
This might mean that in the big picture, I have to:

Remember that my family is my legacy and my life with God is now and forever.

I started a conversation with the question: Does God care about Justice? There are a number of reaons why I'm doing this, but perhaps most importantly this conversation raises the question as to what our calling is as God's people in the world. Am I called to acts of compassion only, or am I called to seek to change the social realities that marginalize people and work to destroy the world in which we live? To me, justice has to do with (to quote the Disciples mission statement) seeking to bring wholeness to a fragmented world. Regarding the first - I see the kinds of responses that church folk offer to the people of Joplin or Japan. Regarding the latter (justice) I see working to change systems that dehumanize folks. Both are important and even essential, and belong together. In that regard, Bruce Epperly offers some thoughts about justice from the perspective of Process Theology as part of his series on that topic. I invite you to read and respond.

Alfred North Whitehead once stated that the aim of the universe is toward the production of beauty. For process theologians, beauty of experience is an ethical as well as aesthetic value. Beauty implies a dynamic relationship of diversity and unity, novelty and order, and contrast and intensity. While these terms seem abstract, they imply an ethical vision appropriate to individual and corporate behavior, grounded in relational and social justice. Just actions and social structures enhance beauty of experience, while unjust actions and social structures deface beauty of experience and limit personal possibilities. Accordingly, we can assert that God is on the side of beauty and justice and seeks relationships and institutions that promote creative, intense, meaningful, and beautiful experiences. A society is judged by its ability to support positive and healthy experiences among its most vulnerable as well as its most elite members.
In the spirit of the prophets and Jesus, process theology recognizes that social institutions - governments, corporations, businesses, educational institutions, are ultimately moral entities. If houses are indiscriminately foreclosed, profits prized over personal and communal well being, children educated in substandard schools, and persons ostracized because of their gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and age, then governments are failing in the quest for beauty of experience. Process theologians affirm the quest for "life, liberty, and the quest for happiness," provided that happiness is seen as communal as well as individual. Individual creativity and success - and the ideal of rugged individualism - at the expense of the social order and the well being of persons is inherently unjust.
Process theology recognizes that all achievement involves the interplay of the environment, family of origin, and personal decision-making. Even in the most difficult situations, for example, poverty, abusive family relationships, and racism, we have the freedom to choose our attitude and take our first steps toward freedom. Even in positive social settings, people may still make harmful decisions. Nevertheless, unhealthy environments place serious limits on our ability to make healthy and responsible decisions. Accordingly, we have a responsibility to foster healthy environments as well as value-based education that enables people to make life-supporting decisions. Healthy and caring environments provide a tipping point toward personal achievement and well being. Here, I define achievement in terms of fulfilling one's particular vocation.
Process theology's quest for health and beauty-supporting environments requires equality of opportunity and sufficient social resources for all people. For example, process theology's concept of justice implies that all persons should have accessible health care, both in terms of prevention and response to illness. Further, while school districts may differ in terms of resources, these differences should be as minimal as possible. Schools in poor counties should be given resources approximate to affluent municipalities. While some will sacrifice as a result of beauty-producing social policy, affirmative action based on a combination of economics and ethnicity is essential in the quest for justice and beauty. But, opportunity and economic background as well as race must be a criterion for advancement in education and the work place.
A healthy society supports peoples' ability to experience more than mere survival. It must encourage creativity, artistic expression, philosophical adventure, scientific exploration, spiritual discovery, and intellectual curiosity. These are values that contribute to breadth of experience and the ability to transcend one's own experience in a world of many peoples and nations. When difficult decisions must be made, such as those involving the arts, health care, education, those with the fewest resources should make the fewest sacrifices. A good society helps its members, in the words of Whitehead, not only "to live, but to live well, and live better." Justice in personal and corporate relationships supports peoples' quests for abundant life, involving creativity and beauty of experience, rather than consumerism and hedonism. According, just structures must take into consideration beauty and abundance for non-humans as well as future generations on this good earth.

A long time ago (i.e. the mid-90's), I had a green iguana named Merlin. After spending 450 to get a bladder stone removed (only a few months after I got him), he mysteriously died about two years later. I was heart broken. I always thought of getting another iguana, but I didn't want it to die as well.
Fast forward to today. My sweetie bought me a new one! In keeping with tradition, I named him after a wizard as well. Fizban is a character from the Dragonlance series of When doing some research, I found out quite a few new things compared to what I had known in the mid-90's. I also found out why Merlin died. In addition to a basking lamp (which provides standard UVA rays like any common light bulb), iguanas need a bulb that emits UVB rays. These are both produced by the sun, and iguanas need both. UVB allows them to utilize the calcium in their diet. Without these rays, the calcium can build up into... drumroll now... calcium deposits within the body, such as bladder stones. When an iguana doesn't get enough calcium (or be able to use it), it gets... metabolic bone disease (MBD for short). I always noticed that Merlin's legs were held at an odd angle, and it had some toes that were just bent around the wrong way. Also, he didn't grow. After two years, I should've needed two hands to hold him, but he was barely bigger than Fizban is now in these pictures. Unfortunately, they didn't know that much about UVB at the time. I had a couple I have him in a little tank right now (29 gallon) until the 55 gallon ones go on sale at Petco (for a dollar a gallon!). In no time at all, though, no conventional tank will be big enough for Fizban. See what he'll look like in three to five years:
Yes, they can grow from five to six feet long! Where to keep such a beast? Why, right here, in our mini-backyard of sorts:
Without the bike, of course! With the exception of the low fence dead ahead, it's pretty well enclosed. Fizban can roam loose in this area, but we need to make sure he stays in, and something like a bobcat stays out! We're going to buy some coated chain link fencing to go over those areas (hope the neighbors don't complain!). Fence or mesh is good, to let in some natural sunlight (though that only happens in the morning), and it should be coated so he can't scratch himself on the fence if climbing or rubbing his nose on it. We'd remove the rocks, as he can scrape his belly on those sharp things. I want to borrow some large rocks and branches from Mother Nature for him to climb on. We'll still need a basking light and a UVB lamp out there, since the sun won't shine into the yard nearly enough for him.
The only thing is, once it starts getting under seventy degrees at night, we'll have to find alternate accommodations for him - probably in our room. This awesome iguana owner (female, natch) has a series of racks nailed into the wall at high levels. She has the lights hanging up there, and it's food bowls and such on the racks. The racks went all around the room, in a spiral fashion. Pretty cool idea!
Oh, one last thing: I know I've been calling Fizban a 'he,' and he's (did it again!) named after a male wizard. Well, it's impossible to tell what sex they are until they reach sexual maturity - about one a half years old. I call him... well, him, both because I don't want to be calling my adorable little lizard an 'it,' and because I thought Merlin was male. The man at the pet store told me he was a boy when I bought him - at 2 or 3 months old. Amateur. So I was used to calling him 'Merlin Boy, Green Boy,' and such. It just comes natural now. Female iguanas are usually blessed with a calmer temperament (though both are easy-going if you train them right), but they tend to have health issues due to their egg-laying. Constipation, loss of protein, and other problems may occur. One can get them spayed at a veterinarian that knows what they're doing with reptiles.

LABAN
GEN 22:23 And Bethuel begat Rebekah: these eight Milcah did bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
GEN 24:15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
GEN 24:29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.
GEN 24:30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
GEN 24:31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
GEN 24:32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him.
GEN 24:33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on.
GEN 28:5 And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother.
GEN 29:12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.
GEN 29:13 And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.
GEN 29:14 And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.
GEN 29:15 And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
GEN 29:16 And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.
GEN 29:17 Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.
GEN 29:18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
GEN 29:19 And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
GEN 29:20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
GEN 29:21 And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.
GEN 29:22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
GEN 29:23 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
GEN 29:24 And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.
GEN 29:25 And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?
GEN 29:26 And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.
GEN 29:27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
GEN 29:28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
GEN 29:29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.
GEN 29:30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.
GEN 30:27 And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
GEN 30:28 And he said, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it.
GEN 30:29 And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
GEN 30:30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
GEN 30:31 And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock.
GEN 30:32 I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my hire.
GEN 30:33 So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted stolen with me.
GEN 30:34 And Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
GEN 30:35 And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.
GEN 30:36 And he set three days' journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban's flocks.
GEN 30:37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut tree; and pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
GEN 30:38 And he set the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering troughs when the flocks came to drink, that they should conceive when they came to drink.
GEN 30:39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ringstraked, speckled, and spotted.
GEN 30:40 And Jacob did separate the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the ringstraked, and all the brown in the flock of Laban; and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Laban's cattle.
GEN 30:41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods.
GEN 30:42 But when the cattle were feeble, he put them not in: so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's.
GEN 30:43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses.
GEN 31:1 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he gotten all this glory.
GEN 31:2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.
GEN 31:3 And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.
GEN 31:4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,
GEN 31:5 And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.
GEN 31:6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
GEN 31:7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
GEN 31:8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.
GEN 31:9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.
GEN 31:10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.
GEN 31:11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
GEN 31:12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.
GEN 31:13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.
GEN 31:14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house?
GEN 31:15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.
GEN 31:16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.
GEN 31:17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels;
GEN 31:18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan.
GEN 31:19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's.
GEN 31:20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled.
GEN 31:21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead.
GEN 31:22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled.
GEN 31:23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days'
journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead.
GEN 31:24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
GEN 31:25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead.
GEN 31:26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword?
GEN 31:27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?
GEN 31:28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing.
GEN 31:29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
GEN 31:30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?
GEN 31:31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me.
GEN 31:32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them.
GEN 31:33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent.
GEN 31:34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
GEN 31:35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched but found not the images.
GEN 31:36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me?
GEN 31:37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both.
GEN 31:38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.
GEN 31:39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night.
GEN 31:40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes.
GEN 31:41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times.
GEN 31:42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight.
GEN 31:43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born?
GEN 31:44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.
GEN 31:45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar.
GEN 31:46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap.
GEN 31:47 And Laban called it Jegarsahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed.
GEN 31:48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day.
Therefore was the name of it called Galeed;
GEN 31:49 And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
GEN 31:50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.
GEN 31:51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee:
GEN 31:52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm.
GEN 31:53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac.
GEN 31:54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount.
GEN 31:55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place.
