BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Metropolitan Nicholas (Hatzinikolaou) of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki was born on April 13, 1954 in Thessaloniki.
He studied Physics at the University of Thessaloniki where he received his Bachelors in 1976, and after serving in the army he continued his studies at Harvard and M.I.T. where he received his Masters of Arts and Masters in Science, and then in a combined program of Harvard and M.I.T. (HST = Health-Sciences-Technology) he received his Ph.D in Biomedical Engineering in 1986. Their objective was to study the Bio-fluid dynamics of the circulatory system (heart and blood vessels) using Fluid Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. More specifically, he dealt with the invention, the design and study of a noninvasive method of diagnosing valve disease by the acoustic analysis method.
Upon completing his studies he worked simultaneously as a research fellow for various hospitals in Boston, including New England Deaconess Hospital in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Massachusetts General Hospital and the Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of Boston. He also served two years as a consultant in space medical technology for NASA and Arthur D. Little.
After teaching two semesters at Harvard and M.I.T. a seminar in "Bioliquids and Hemodynamics", he went on to teach in 1990 at the School of Medicine at the University of Crete as well as at the University of Athens.
His preoccupation with the Science and Research of the natural world and man led him on a personal quest towards Orthodox Theology, prompting him to enroll in the study of the primary science of Theology. He went back to Boston where he received both a Masters in Theological Studies and a Masters in Theology from Holy Cross School of Theology, and then a doctorate from the University of Thessaloniki in Bioethics in 2003.
The academic study of Theology was not enough to satisfy his great desire for deeper knowledge and to experience theological truth, lead him to the "spiritual university and hospital", Mount Athos, where he stayed for two and a half years. In January 1988 he went to Mount Athos, and from May 1990 to April 2004 he served as a Hieromonk at the Athonite Metochion (of Simonopetra Monastery) of the Ascension in Athens.
On 26 April 2004 he was elected the second Metropolitan of Mesogaia and Lavreotiki and enthroned by Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and All Greece together with 15 Metropolitans on April 30th.
Since 1990 he teaches the course "Hemodynamics Pathophysiology of Vascular Diseases" at the Medical School of Crete.
Since 1992, he is Director of the Hellenic Center for Biomedical Ethics, and is systematically engaged in Orthodox Bioethics, the sociological implications of biomedicine, the organizations of lectures, seminars and conferences and training young scientists on issues of Bioethics. Conference facilities are located within the Center for Bioethics in the Athonite Metochion of the Ascension in Attica. He is also President of the Bioethics Committee of the Church of Greece and a member of the National Bioethics Committee and a member of the National Transplant Organization.
In 2008 (May 20) he received an Honorary Doctoral Degree from the University of Athens School of Theology in Science and Religion.

Bishop Thomas Olmstead demoted Sister Mary McBride for not doing her job. She was supposed to represent the Catholic church in matters of medical ethics. More precisely, she was the liaison between the hospital ethics committee and physicians. She was supposed to stop all abortions. Instead, the doctors and hospital made the right decision when presented with an urgent case. A pregnant mother of four had pulmonary hypertension and was going to die. The doctors terminated her pregnancy in order to save her life. Yet Bishop Thomas Olmstead wanted McBride to enforce Catholic doctrine that calls for a ban on all abortions without regard for the details in the case. He did not care about the patient. This decision was not made from a position of Christ-like love. It was hate driven and a political calculation. The mother should have died to preserve the church's position on abortion. The cause is more important that a single human life. The catholic church has a long history of sacrificing believers in the name of politics.
Olmstead did not stop with a demotion. The hospital is a Catholic institution called St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix. Olmstead wanted the doctors to take a pledge saying they would never do another abortion. The doctors refused. You can read the whole story here.
What I don't understand is the ethical math involved. To Catholics a living human who is the mother of 4 children is worth less than an unborn fetus in its 11th week of gestation. Not only that, but what Olmstead wanted to do would have resulted in the death of the mother and her fetus. How is that a win? Plus, sending the mother away to have the abortion at another facility would have simply resulted in the abortion taking place while increasing the risk to the mother. What Olmstead wanted was for the hospital to never perform an abortion, which is a wholly political position and therefore suspect. What gives Olmstead the right to make medical decisions for the doctors?
Catholics listen - you can be good without God and you can receive medical care without the Church being involved. Don't let the Catholic church get in between you and your doctor. Don't let Olmstead kill your mothers and daughters over a misguided and ethically corrupt position on abortion. You can make the right choice without Catholic interference. Rise up - cast Olmstead to the curb. He deserves it.

Dr. Pyysiainen and co-author Dr. Marc Hauser, from the Departments of Psychology and Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University, used a fresh perspective based in experimental moral psychology to review these two competing theories. "We were interested in making use of this perspective because religion is linked to morality in different ways," says Dr. Hauser. "For some, there is no morality without religion, while others see religion as merely one way of expressing one's moral intuitions."
Citing several studies in moral psychology, the authors highlight the finding that despite differences in, or even an absence of, religious backgrounds, individuals show no difference in moral judgments for unfamiliar moral dilemmas. The research suggests that intuitive judgments of right and wrong seem to operate independently of explicit religious commitments.
"This supports the theory that religion did not originally emerge as a biological adaptation for cooperation, but evolved as a separate by-product of pre-existing cognitive functions that evolved from non-religious functions," says Dr. Pyysiainen. "However, although it appears as if cooperation is made possible by mental mechanisms that are not specific to religion, religion can play a role in facilitating and stabilizing cooperation between groups."
Perhaps this may help to explain the complex association between morality and religion. "It seems that in many cultures religious concepts and beliefs have become the standard way of conceptualizing moral intuitions. Although, as we discuss in our paper, this link is not a necessary one, many people have become so accustomed to using it, that criticism targeted at religion is experienced as a fundamental threat to our moral existence," concludes Dr. Hauser.

I have had the pleasure of ministering to many women who have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Their numbers are increasing dramatically as the years go by. A little more than five years ago such a diagnosis was rare and many who were given this diagnosis were considered to be mentally unstable. This is because it is a catch-all diagnosis given when no medical reason exists for the muscle and connective tissue pain a person experiences in varying intensities. A person is diagnosed with Fibro when all the blood tests come back in the normal ranges and no other reason for the pain can be found medically.
An overwhelming majority of the people diagnosed with Fibro live their lives ruled by the pain they experience. Overcomers are few and far between, and even Christians tend to be defeated by this malady. That does not have to describe you.
First, the hard truths. There is benefit in pain, even the chronic gnawing pain you may suffer with. There is also benefit in pain relief- more than just in the physical and emotional realm. Both of these truths are possible for the believer in Christ Jesus, and impossible for those who are unregenerate.

If you have your Bible handy, take a look at the verses that precede the one I cited for you. The context is one of suffering and Paul outlines for us how the whole creation is groaning in misery as it waits to be fully adopted when the times reach their fulfillment. "Everything" in this world is yearning to be set free from the bondage of suffering.
Our suffering is participation in the sufferings of Christ Jesus.

Part of our identity in Christ is suffering, but it is not our entire identity. The problem with chronic pain is that we tend to allow it to define us. It, rather than Christ, becomes the ruler of our lives. Pain, rather then the Scriptures consumes our thoughts, and Self rather than Christ becomes our god. Pain is not who you are, who you are is a child of the King.
"The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him." Romans 8:16-17 (NASB)
The reality of the situation is that our sufferings confirm that we "do" belong to Christ! God has not forgotten you in your pain but He does use the pain of Fibromyalgia in your life and as you grow and change into Christ-likeness there is benefit in your life and the lives of others around you.
This pain has a purpose. God is working in an intentional way in you and through you. He is putting His power on display in your life as you learn to deal biblically with pain and most importantly, He is using you to bring glory to Himself.
