I have been asked on several occasions how to cleanse crystals or magical tools, so here are a few ideas:
Hold under running water (a stream or a tap)
Lay item outside (in a safe place) in the moonlight
Lay item outside (in a safe place) in the sunlight
Either of the above two can also be done by placing the item on a windowsill
Sprinkling with salt
If it feels like it needs a really good cleanse then cover completely in salt and leave for a few hours
Smudge with incense
Smudge with burning sage or sweetgrass
Sprinkle with a cleansing herb like sage and leave for a few hours
Visualise the item being cleansed by a bright, white light
Ring a bell over the item, using the vibrations to cleanse it
Sprinkle with blessed water
Sprinkle with salt water
Bury the item in soil (but remember where you buried it!)
Please be careful, make sure the particular crystal or magical tool is not porous and that it won't be damaged by water or salt.
All of the above can be worked into a ritual if you choose to, or you could say a few blessing words over the item as you are cleansing it.
Really the choice is yours, go with what feels right for you.

Good relationships don't just happen; says Dr. Margaret Paul. In general people think if they need to work on their relationships, then it is not the right relationship for them! However just as we need to work on having a good health through physical exercise, proper diet and proper emotions, a good relationship also requires enough care and nurturing.
No matter how sweet and beloved our partner might be, there will still be shortcomings. There is a saying that Roses always come with Thorns! Although it might not be possible to remove the problems in relationships completely, we can still learn how to handle the difficult situations to save our relationship from a breakdown.
According to Grand Master Choa Kok Sui, one of the major reasons why a marriage or a relationship tends to breakdown is because one or both the parties tend to use each other as a "psychic garbage can." This means that if one experiences an extremely stressful day or if one is emotionally hurt by a third person, upon returning home the normal best solution seems to consciously or unconsciously dumping or releasing the stress or psychic garbage on the other partner. The result is normally heated exchange of words and in some cases physical violence. The effect is eventually a breakdown in a marriage or a relationship.
Basically a strong and healthy relationship is one of the best supports in life. As a good relationship can improve all the aspects of life and bring good health, happiness and peace of mind, an inharmonious relationship can also be a tremendous drain. Therefore it is necessary to take care of our relationships and look at them as an investment to achieve greater happiness in life.
1. Know, accept and love yourself
This is one of the basic requirements for a healthy relationship. Often we start a relationship in pursuit of happiness; expecting the other person to make us happy and if we don't find expected happiness, we tend to get disappointed and change the relationship. However real happiness comes from inside!
This is one of the important choices that you can take to improve your relationship. It means you learn how to take responsibility for your own feelings and needs, that instead of trying to get your partner to make you feel happy and secure, you learn how to do this for yourself through your own thoughts and actions. This happens when you learn to treat yourself with kindness, caring, and acceptance instead of self-judgment which always make you feel unhappy and insecure, no matter how wonderfully your partner is treating you.
If you don't know your own needs, wants, qualities and limitations, and more importantly if you don't love yourself you seek relationships as a source of own validation. The effect of such attitude will be aggressiveness, possessiveness, disappointment and unhappiness in a relationship. Even if you change your partner, since the cause and the need for self-validation is still in you, the second relationship will fall into the same pattern as the first one.
If you know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses, and if you love yourself for what you are, it is much easier to love people as they are and to accept their shortcomings.
This will also enables you to become open to change and feedback. When you have low self-confidence or even pride, upon receiving any feedback or comment you tend to react. Remember that we are all evolving, and our relationship is evolving with us. It is OK to make mistake! Just learn from your mistake and move on!
When you learn how to take full responsibility of yourself, then you stop blaming your partner for your upsets.
2. Know your partner
We have been born and grown up in different environments, with different backgrounds and ideas. Each person is a unique being and has a unique language of life. In every relationship it is extremely important to know the other person, his preferences and his language of life.
Often problems in relationships happen because of misunderstandings and misconceptions. Showing love has different meanings for different people. One can feel loved by a hug or a kiss or a physical touch, while another might feel loved through a present or a written poem.
Often we think we are not loved by our partner because we are not familiar with their language.
In many cases also we hurt their feelings unknowingly because we don't know them; their liking and disliking. Pay attention to the nonverbal signals!
Relationships can be improved easily by caring for the other person, learning their language and trying to see the world from their perspective once in a while.
Sometimes it is good to stop talking and simply listen to your partner.
3. Learn to take the whole package
As stated earlier, Roses always come with Thorns! No matter how sweet and wholesome a person is, still there are shortcomings. Therefore it is important to realize that we are all human beings and we all make mistake. Each person has strengths and weaknesses.
If you have chosen to be with a person, you must accept their strengths as well as their weaknesses. You must take the whole package!
One of the techniques which can help you deal with the difficult times in relationships is to capture your partner's good attitudes and actions towards you and the good times you have had together by writing down or taking photos or video. This will help you have a more realistic view of your partner and your relationship during difficult situations.
4. Stop blaming other person, focus on solutions
Often we tend to focus on problems and blame us or others for any problem that occurs in a relationship. However, verbally repeating the mistake of another person is nagging. Nagging will not work! Instead of wasting your time by nagging focus on the solutions.
Think about the reason you have this problem, the lessons that need to be learnt, the required actions and corrections and start implementing them on yourself as well as your partner.
In fact according to Dr. Jack Dominian, it is better for both partners to share joint responsibility and work together to solve it. The phrase "the problem with you is... " should be banned!
One of the techniques that have been emphasized by many specialists including Grand Master Choa Kok Sui which can help is the visualization technique. Imagine the person behaving properly, in the right way. Remember words and thoughts have power. What you think and what you say tend to manifest! If you focus on problems only, the outcome will be more problems. Avoid excessive criticism. Instead, create the right image!
5. Consider the state of your relationship, have a relationship target
First of all you need to know the nature of relationship in general and its purpose. Relationships help you evolve, especially a difficult relationship; they help individuals develop patience, tolerance and forgiveness, stated by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui. In fact relationships are like playing grounds to help us develop self-sacrifice, self-control, patience, flexibility and tolerance, not just to make us happy. If you have a realistic and proper view towards relationships it is easier to handle the difficult situations.
You also need to know the state of your relationship. Is it only in the physical level? Do you have good communication with your partner? Do you understand each other emotionally?
Are you able to have deep conversations? Do you have common way of thinking? Do you have soul contact? You can know the state of your relationship by observing what thoughts and words come out of your mind and your mouth, and your feelings towards one another.
When a relationship is superficial, it tends not to last. If you think you don't have enough harmony and understanding in your relationship, it's time to do corrections!
Have a relationship target. Think where you want to be with the same partner in another 10 years from now.
6. Increase love and respect
The real cause of the disappointments, emotional and psychological ailments is insufficient soul contact. Love is the answer, it is therapeutic.
You must be realistic! Everybody makes mistake. Just forgive and forget and continue living.
'By giving a person love, you make them grow. Project loving-kindness to your partner and the person will bloom.' (Master Choa Kok Sui, 2004, pp. 27-28)
You must remember that when two people interact closely, there will definitely be friction. The lubricant is Love. You can show love to your partner in the form of loving thoughts, loving feelings as well as loving words and actions. Love can also be increased by praising your partner and using nurturing words. The more love is experienced between the partners, there will be more openness.
But remember, real love never looks for paybacks; when you give, give whole-heartedly.
7. Spend quality time, don't take for granted
Most of the times, we tend to take our loved-ones for granted. Only we come to know their value, when they are away from us.
It is extremely crucial for having a healthy relationship to spend quality time together.
Any living being and any relationship needs nurturing to flourish; if left alone and uncared, it won't survive.
The more you spend dedicated, focused and quality time with your loved-ones, the more your relationship gets nurtured. Quality time means your full attention should be towards your partner, you must show that you care.
Remember when you were in love, how you used to find time for your beloved. Especially after getting married, relationships lose their quality since both partners get busy. No matter how busy you are, it is extremely important to set aside specific times to be together, to talk, play, laugh and make love.
8. Meditate, especially with your partner
There are certain meditations available that increase the love and harmony within the family; one is the Meditation on Twin Hearts.
Meditation on Twin Hearts is basically a technique to achieve cosmic consciousness or illumination. It is also a form of service to the world as the world is harmonized to a certain degree through blessing the entire earth with loving-kindness.
This technique can be used to harmonize relationships as well as to bless certain place, city or country. Based on the collected testimonials, any relationship can be improved tremendously by practicing this meditation regularly, especially in a group. It is advisable for families with problems to sit down together and do this meditation on a regular basis.
When a person does Meditation on Twin Hearts, divine energy enters the practitioner's system filling him with divine light, love and power; making the practitioner a channel of divine energy. This divine energy goes in and out of the aura, flushing out the cloud of negative thoughts and emotions, thereby cleansing the aura.
As a result, Meditation on Twin Hearts gives you a better physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health, leading to a better relationship.
9. Speak out
Don't assume that your partner knows your problem. Speak it out!
Often we behave in a certain way to show our partner that we are unhappy! Don't fall into this trap. If you have a problem with your partner or an issue in your life, talk about it, express it to your partner clearly and in a proper manner. Sometimes we need to learn different communication skills to be able to express our thoughts and feelings.
You can also ask your partner if you feel and observe something in the relationship is bothering them. Give time and chance to them to talk as well. This will make your relationship stronger and help strengthen the communication between both of you.
10. Be responsible for your actions, learn your lesson
After childhood, we are all expected to be responsible for what we say and do. Unfortunately there are still many adults that feel safer and more comfortable to place the blame on others instead of themselves. This simple issue is one of the problems that can take the relationship into fail since after sometimes no one wants to be at blame all the time; besides it is exhausting to be around someone who always blames others but never takes the responsibility himself. After all the relationship is supposed to make us grow; if we do not take the responsibility over our own actions and behaviors, change is impossible.
One of the fast ways to improve a relationship is to remove the "blame game" and accept responsibility where it's due; then focus on solutions instead of complaining.
Remember that everyone makes mistake! It is part of life! Evolution requires time, process and lots of mistakes. So admit your mistakes, apologize and learn your lesson.
11. Keep it fun
Couples are usually more fun and playful in the early stages of a relationship. Especially after marriage, this attitude is forgotten as life challenges and resentments increase over time. Keeping a sense of humor enables you to enjoy life, get through the tough times easier and to deal with them more realistically.
Relationships flourish when people laugh together, play together and when excitement and humor is a part of everyday life. Stop taking everything so seriously.
Think about playful ways to surprise your partner. Once in a while try something new and exciting together and keep the relationship fun.
12. Don't react immediately, wait for the right time
In the midst of any argument or fight, remember that if you react it only worsens the problem. Stay calm and detached. Common response to argument is some kind of controlling behavior; both parties want to win, or at least not lose. However, the experiences have shown that controlling through showing anger, blame, judgment, resistance, denying even explaining and teaching is unsuccessful. The more we try to control, the more it adds to the conflict. The moment you react, you are psychologically entangled.
If you think your partner is over-reacting or even if you think you know the solution explaining it in the middle of the argument doesn't work. Since your partner is emotionally imbalanced at that moment, he cannot understand you.
The best approach is to forgive your partner internally, keep your emotions under control, calm down the situation, and keep the talking for the right time. Keep it in mind that it is not the matter of who is right and who is wrong; it is the matter of doing the right thing for the sake of your relationship.
13. Give each other freedom
Many of the married men and women complain about losing their freedom after marriage. Although a person in a relationship might not be as free as a bachelor because of responsibilities and commitments, don't make it harder for your partner by being too possessive.
In any relationship there should be freedom. Freedom is the greatest gift one human being can give to another. Real growth usually happens when we feel free.
Don't be afraid that if you give freedom to your partner they might leave you. Only over-controlling and too much limitation can chase a person away. Giving freedom is not a guarantee that the other person will behave the way you want him to, but it is extremely necessary that you give space to others to be as they are. This is a sign of respect towards others and must be practiced.
14. Take care of unfinished emotional business
If there are a lot of anger and resentment in you because of a deed of your parents, friends or ex-partner in the past, face it, forgive and let go. Don't let the anger accumulate over time.
Accumulated anger, resentment, feeling of abandonment and even guilt not only affect your current state but also affects your future relationships.
Do not be unhappy. Remember that the past is the past! Let go. Learn to forgive and forget. Let go and go on living. Don't let an event in the past ruin your current life and relationships.
According to Grand Master Choa Kok Sui, 'Inner Forgiveness is therapeutic. If you do not forgive, you cannot be internally healed. Forgiving heals the soul.' (Master Choa Kok Sui, 2004, p. 15)
15. Use healing techniques
Sometimes a painful event in the past has been so devastating that we cannot easily forget; or some emotional issues that are affecting our relationship such as stress, resentment, fear or low self-esteem seem to be very difficult to remove. In such cases alternative healing techniques can be very helpful to remove the unwanted feeling or behavior from your system.
Pranic Psychotherapy is one of the most effective methods dealing with behavioral and psychological issues. Its principles and techniques may be used to improve family relationships as well as save a marriage on the brink of a breakdown.
Pranic Psychotherapy is basically Pranic Healing applied in the treatment of psychological disorders. What we call disturbing emotions or thoughts are basically energy forms. Thinking and feeling in fact produce psychic beings which are called "thought forms" and "thought entities" that are real and can influence you and other people. 'When a person has a traumatic experience for example, the traumatic psychic energies produced are lodged in several chakras or energy centers which may in long run, manifest as stress or phobia.' (Master Choa Kok Shui, 2000, p. 17) Unless these thought forms and entities are removed from the system, using techniques such as Pranic Psychotherapy, they remain in the person's chakras and will continue to affect him and his relationship with others. Pranic Psychotherapy in this case can be applied to heal both partners and improve the relationship to a loving and harmonious level.

Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Swami
Rambhadracharya, aged about 54 years (vide his affidavit
dated 15.7.2003) has said the following in his cross examination as under.
The major evidence he has given was Sri Tulsishatak written by Tulsi Das grieving over the demolition of Ram Janma Bhumi.
"As per my study and knowledge, Ayodhya-situated
disputed site itself is the birthplace of Lord Sri Rama. It is
known to all that Lord Sri Rama was born in Ayodhya itself
and the disputed site is, as per faith, tradition and belief,
recognised by the followers of Hinduism as the birthplace
of Sri Rama since the time immemorial, and the worship of
that place has consistently been performed."
"As per Hindu scriptures, idols and the places of gods
are revered worshipping which a man attains liberation."
" Particular places have special importance in Hindu
scriptures and they are self deified and revered as
Swayambhudev (God of land in themselves). By virtue of
faith, tradition and worship, this type of places are the most
exalted places of worship in the minds of people from
eternity. This type of places blessed with divinity do not
require Shivait or Sarvarahakar or Mahanta.
Appointment of Shivait or Sarvarahakar or Mahanta
needs to be made at man-made places of gods."
"Description of Ayodhya being the birthplace of
Raghavendra Lord Sri Rama and the disputed site being
Sri Ramas birthplace, is found in Valmiki Ramayana,
Atharvaveda,
Yajurveda,
Ramtapniyayopanishad,
Skandapurana and Tulsidass literature.
GOSWAMI TULSIDAS, in his Sri Tulsishatak has clearly described the
deeds of Muslims and Babur and the mosque having been
built by Mir Baqi after demolishing Sri Ram Janam Mandir
at Ayodhya, which runs as follows
Goswami Tulsidas Ji says that 'Yavans'
(barbarians /Mohammedans) ridicule hymns, several
Upnishads and treatises like Brahmans, Puranas, Itihas
(histories) etc. and also the Hindu society (orthodox
religion) having faith in them. They exploit the Hindu
society in different ways.
Goswami Tulsi Das says that forcible attempts are
being made by Muslims to expel the followers of Hinduism
from their own native place (country), forcibly divesting
them of their Shikha (lock of hair on the crown of head)
and 'Yagyopaveet' (sacrificial thread) and causing them to
deviate from their religion. Tulsi Das terms this time as a
hard and harrowing one.
Describing the barbaric attack of Babur, Goswami Ji
says that he indulged in gruesome genocide of the natives
of that place (followers of Hinduism), using sword (army).
Gowami Tulsi Das Ji says that countless atrocities
were committed by foolish 'Yavans' (Mohammedans) in
Awadh (Ayodhya) in and around the summer of Samvat
1585, that is, 1528 AD (Samvat 1585- 57=1528 AD).
Describing the attack made by 'Yavans', that is,
Mohammedans on Sri Ramjanambhumi temple, Tulsi Das
Ji says that after a number of Hindus had been mercilessly
killed, Sri Ram Janam Bhumi temple was broken to make it
a mosque.
Looking at the ruthless killing of Hindus, Tulsi Ji
says that his heart felt aggrieved, that is, it began to weep,
and on account of incident it continues to writhe in pain.
Seeing the mosque constructed by Mir Baqi in
Awadh, that is, Ayodhya in the wake of demolition of Sri
Ram Janam Bhumi temple preceded by the grisly killing of
followers of Hinduism having faith in Rama and also
seeing the bad plight of the temple of his favoured deity
Rama, THE HEART OF TULSI BEGAN TO ALWAYS CRY TEARFULLY FOR
RAGHURAJ (the most revered among the scions of the Raghu
Dynasty).
Being aggrieved thereby, submitting himself to
the will of Sri Rama, he shouted: O RAM ! SAVE...SAVE...
TULSI DAS JI SAYS THAT THE MOSQUE WAS CONSTRUCTED BY
THE WICKED MIR BAQI AFTER DEMOLISHING SRI RAM JANAM
BHUMI TEMPLE, SITUATED IN THE MIDDLE OF AWADH, THAT IS,
AYODHYA.
Tulsi Das Ji says that the Quran as well as Ajaan call
is heard from the holy place of Sri Ram Janam Bhumi,
where discourses from Shrutis, Vedas, Puranas, Upnishads
etc. used to be always heard and which used to be
constantly reverberated with sweet sound of bells."
"In his work Kavitavali, Goswami Tulsidas while
expressing detachment from the society and his attachment
and faith towards Lord Rama has mentioned about the
disputed site in the following lines:
"Dhoot Kahaun, Avadhoot Kahaun, Rajpoot
Kahaun, Jolha Kahaun Kou.
Kahu Ki Beti Se Beta Na Byahab, Kahu Ki Jati
Bigaran Sou.
Tulsi Sar Naam Gulamu Hai Ram Ko, Jako
Ruche So kahe Kachhu Jou.
Mangi Ke Khaibon, Maseet Me Soibo, Laive
Ko Eku Na Deve Ke Dou."
" The Veda equivalent Valmiki Ramayana is
considered to have been composed in the period of Lord
Sri Rama. While describing the time, climate, planets etc.
of the birth of Lord Sri Rama in Sarga-18 of Balkand in the
Valmiki Ramayana, Maharishi Valmiki has clearly
described the birthplace of Lord Sri Rama through the
words 'Sarvalok Namaskrit' in the following Shloka-
"Tato Yagye Samapte Tu Ritunam Shat
Samatyuyah.
Tatasch Dwadashe
"24. The religious
revering the said place as the centre of their faith."

Since Valentine's Day will be at the very end of this week I thought a post about the heart might be appropriate. So here goes: We've all heard little clich'e quotes about the heart such as: "My heart is breaking"; "Follow your heart"; and "He has a hard heart." Our hearts "rejoice" when there's good news and they "break" when there's bad news.
I used to think that I was unique in having the "heart problems" that I have...not physically but spiritually. I thought I must have more trouble than anyone else around me in having the right attitudes toward things and people or keeping my temper in check or all the other "besetting sins" that I have.
I really had trouble getting close to other Christian ladies because I thought that when they got to know me they wouldn't want to be my friend anymore. Then one day a dear friend of mine told me something that forever has changed the way I think about the heart. Several years before, her Pastor's wife had told her that ALL us women are alike...
(I'm sure this goes for all men also!)...that we all have the same weaknesses, the same selfishness, the same envy, the same disobedient spirit as the next woman. The Bible backs this up in a verse in Jeremiah 17:9 which says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
Because our hearts are wicked we need to heed the advice given in Proverbs 4:23 "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." We may look at each other at times and only see the good...that's when we're on our best behavior. At other times we may see only the bad in each other.
The Bible says in I Samuel 16:7 "for the LORD seeth not as man seeth: for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart." I sometimes may be able to fool you and you may sometimes fool me, but we can never fool God. If we are behaving well today, it's only because of the grace of God and His Spirit that is dwelling in us as believers.
Usually, when our heart is right then our outward actions will be right too. "("For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7)
On the other side of the coin, isn't it wonderful to know that our God is always perfect, never having any negative attributes to grieve us with. When we occasionally see a fellow Christian fall by the wayside into sin, let's don't let that keep us from serving God ourselves.
The devil will use the failures of others to try and make us give up too. It's such a comfort to know we don't have to depend on other Christians for our security. There's a wonderful verse in II Thessalonians 3:3 that says "But the Lord is faithful..."He can never disappoint us or be a bad example to us.
One of my favorite songs is called "He is Faithful". The lady who wrote it is the wife of the pastor of the well-known Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York City. She wrote this song during a time when their teenaged daughter had rebelled against the Lord, against the convictions of their family, and had left their home.
Sometimes we only see the glitter and the glamour in a person's life and not the personal heartaches and tears. There are probably more Christian homes than we will ever know of that go through personal tragedies of one kind or another. But it's good to know our God knows all about it.
There are many functions of the heart but maybe these two top the list.
First is the part our heart plays in our personal salvation. The Bible says in Romans 10:10, "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." We can never be the person God has planned for us to be until we have believed in our hearts that Jesus is the Christ and we become a new creature in Him.
After we do that, then we can do the most important thing our heart can do for God. Mark 12:30 tells us what that is: "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment." As human beings we cannot always measure up to what God expects of us but we should always keep trying to love Him more and more.
If we truly want to do this, then God will give us a "heart to know Him". (Jeremiah 24:7 "And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.")" I want to be more aware of the condition of my own heart so that I will be able to serve the Lord better.
In these times of uncertainty we need to focus on loving God with all our heart and then everything else in other areas of our lives will fall into place. (Philippians 4:7 "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Grandfather, father, son - A comparison of mortuary temple. On the West Bank in Luxor many of the New Kingdom pharaohs built their mortuary temples. These would be vehicles both for the worship of the King after he died and became a God and additionally they were cult temples. They were used for events like the Feast of the Valley. Thereby ensuring continuity of worship at the temple, for many hundreds of years. It is interesting to contrast the styles of the various pharaohs and the condition of the temples today. For this very personal and subjective analysis I have chosen the mortuary temples of Seti I, Rameses II and Merenptah. The nice thing about these three temples is that they have few visitors. After trying to view Hatshepsut's temple with its hoards of chattering tourists following the harassed tour guides with their umbrellas and clip boards. It is pleasant to be in a different tour of Egypt, to stand in the quiet and be the only tourist admiring the site.I love the temple of Seti I; it is one of my favourite sites. You get a picture of a very religious man from this temple. Anxious to adore the Gods as much as possible. A filial man who honoured his own father within the complex, providing him with the mortuary temple Rameses I did not have time to build himself. The current site has recently been superbly restored and is a total joy to visit. With clear signs and the temple layout provided on a clear map, this temple is now one of the most interesting for the discerning visitor. You enter from the side; the entrance pylon being ruined now and the door way bricked up. However standing in the remains of the gateway and looking along the axis it is easy to get a picture of the complex.
The temple palace to the side has also been restored and I love to take people to the site of the window of appearances. Children especially love to pretend to be pharaoh and award collars of gold and golden flies to the plebs (parents) below. It is hard not be moved as you stand there and imagine the triumphant general and long serving civil servant getting their rewards from the king.Passing through the second courtyard the restoration team have planted up the avenue. It gives it the feel of ancient Deir el Bahri with its potential of shady groves. The enclosed part of the temple has many, many chapels dedicated to the various Gods and carries most of the surviving decoration. But here is no boastful general with an army of spin doctors decorating an ego centric mortuary temple but relief after relief is of Seti adoring the Gods. Much of this relief work in the inner parts of the temple is in raised relief and very reminiscent of his work at Abydos.. There is a walk way round the boundary wall and having gone through the temple your return to the exit along this wall. The view of the outside of the temple is exactly the same as the inside relief after relief of Seti worshiping the Gods. The overall impression is of a pious man who took his religious duties seriously. There are no battle scenes, no prisoners about to have their heads bashed in. I find it a very peaceful temple.Moving on to his son's mortuary temple, the Ramasseum. Firstly I have to confess a dislike for Rameses II which does colour my view. I mean the guy wouldn't know artistic merit if it hit him in the face. Yes he knew big and yes he knew quantity. Quality however was not his strong point; his big give away is the use of incised relief everywhere. Raised relief takes a lot longer and Ramses couldn't be bothered with that. Let's get it up and covered with decoration as soon as possible. Having said that I do like the temple. Actually having said all the things about the wonderful restoration work at Seti I temple I actually like the Ramasseum for its deserted, unkempt look. The first courtyard consists of sand and tall clumps of grass, much of the temple and statuary is ruined. It has a peculiar charm of its own with the graffiti of ancient visitors including that of Belzoni. I like to stand in the deserted first courtyard and recite Shelley's poem. Especially the lines "Nothing besides remains. Round the decayOf the Colossal wreck, boundless and bareThe lone and level sands stretch far away."The fallen statue of Rameses is without doubt a truly impressive piece of engineering. I am particularly impressed with the way the nemes head cloth is shown by getting the granite to be in smooth and matt stripes.
When you think about the tools available to them at this time it is amazing what they achieved. The wall decoration is of course the battle of Kadesh; it is a bit like the emperors new clothes to see the scenes. You know he didn't win but you are carried away by his version of events. The other thing in abundance is pictures of his children. Well he did have a lot of them but they are everywhere. Finally in the innermost rooms we get some religious scenes but mostly it is Rameses that dominates the reliefs in this temple. The colour is spectacular and I can never tire of looking up at the column capitals and admiring the rich and colourful designs. I can't understand why this temple has fallen out of favour as a place to visit.Poor old Merenptah, it must have seemed an age waiting for the throne. Firstly 12 of his older brothers had to die; he must have wondered would he also miss the chance as Rameses II went on and on. The relief as he finally mounted the throne. But he was already elderly and with life expectancy much lower than today he was taking no chances. His temple is much smaller and he reused blocks from the temple of Amenhotep III in his mortuary temple. This is not actually as bad as it seems because it is suspected that the first temple had already been partially destroyed by the flood water. So it was just a case of lifting stuff that had already fallen not actually destroying it. Although his temple is much smaller it follows a similar pattern to that of his father and grandfather.Today it is very ruined but it has been superbly restored by the Swiss Institute.
They have taken the idea of posting metal plaques with a picture of the relief and an outline of the block you are looking at. It is a terrific idea and makes even very ruined blocks come alive.Having said that little remains of the temple but the layout is well defined by the restorers and it is not difficult to visualise the complete temples. I personally felt the quality was better than Ramses, there was use of raised relief and the decoration as a whole was less brash. All that I could see on display was religious scenes although with so much missing there well could have been a similar attempt at self glorification. But you didn't get that impression. The huge black granite Steele recording the existence of Israelites was truly impressive. This was reused by Merenptah and on the reverse it is inscribed by Amenhotep III. This stele records the earliest mention of the Israelites as Merenptah describes his subjection over foreign peoples. But overall the temple is dominated by the wealth of remains from Amenhotep II. There are two underground chambers with remnants of his monumental gateway and a museum with artifacts, statuary and relief's all with wonderful colour. For these 3 rooms alone the site would be worth visiting but with the added bonus of being a mortuary temple of a great Ramaside king the third in one family them it has much to offer the serious scholar. So three very different temples all with their own charmSeti I - a pious pharaoh with an eye for qualityRameses II- untouched by the restorers, invoking a David Roberts sceneMerenptah - ruined but compensated by Amenhotep III remnants.
