"Sarbatori, traditii si obiceiuri crestin - ortodoxe pe 14 noiembrie"

SFANTUL APOSTOL FILIP

In clipa cand Apostolul Filip si-a dat sufletul Domnului, pamantul s-a deschis, inghitind in dansul atat pe guvernator, cat si pe multi preoti pagani. Numerosi pagani ce au supravietuit acestui cataclism s-au inspaimantat si au ajuns sa creada in Hristos, fiind botezati de catre Vartolomeu. Sfantul Vartolomeu a continuat sa propavaduiasca Evanghelia in multe alte locuri, iar Sfanta Mariamni a calatorit la raul Iordanului, unde s-a savarsit in pace.

SFANTUL GRIGORIE PALAMA

In 1347, Sfantul Grigorie Palama a devenit episcop de Tesalonic, servind in aceasta demnitate pana la moartea sa.

The Pagan Alliance Connects To Nature

Another Myth About Paganism Is That It Is Just One Religion Cressall Said
The word Pagan comes from Latin; it means "COUNTRY DWELLER." The term was used derogatorily during the Christian conversion period of ancient Rome to refer to the people in the countryside who still adhered to the old traditions of polytheism, said freshman Kassie Cressall, president of the USU Pagan Alliance president.

Cressall said the term today takes on a positive connotation of people connected to nature, an important source of spirituality and inspiration for Paganistic faiths.

The USU Pagan Alliance was officially recognized as a club by ASUSU this August.

"I STARTED THE GROUP BECAUSE WHEN I MOVED FROM COLORADO SPRINGS, SUDDENLY MY TRIBE, MY FAMILY, WENT AWAY, THE PEOPLE WHO THOUGHT LIKE ME," Cressall said. "It was so important to have people that were on a similar wavelength, I felt that it needed to be started here in Utah in a way that lets people have their different beliefs while still creating a fellowship so they can feel brave about what they believe in and get to know themselves."

She said there are many myths about Paganism, according to Cressall.

"THE MAIN GOAL OF THE GROUP IS TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT PAGANISM IS AND WHAT IT ISN'T WHILE THE OTHER GOAL IS TO PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE TO SHOW WE ARE NICE PEOPLE AND WE DO CARE," she said. "A lot of it will deal with the land, so we will be cleaning trails."

The Pagan Alliance will have a game booth at the National Coming Out Day celebration at USU partnering with the GLBTA. Also, the group will hold a Samhain Celebration, which is what America knows as Halloween. The event will take place at the Unitarian Universalist church on Halloween night from 6-10 p.m. All students and community members are welcome. There will be a 5 door charge to help pay for food and rental space.

Modern Halloween traditions such as trick-or-treating came from the tradition of going door to door asking for the spirits of the dead. Bobbing for apples was symbolic as well. Cressall said the water symbolized the underworld while the apples were the bounty of the land, meaning those who successfully bobbed an apple overcame the underworld to live another year.

"THIS HALLOWEEN DATE FOR NUMEROUS TRADITIONS HAS BEEN, FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, WHEN YOU RECOGNIZE YOUR DEAD AND HONOR THEM AS WELL AS THE CHANGE OF THE YEAR. WE WILL HOLD A RITUAL THAT HONORS THE DEAD AND FORCES OF NATURE, AN 'OLD WOMAN WINTER"' PERSONIFICATION," Cressall said.

Pagans celebrate and follow the cycle of the seasons, or equinoxes.

"THERE IS A WHEEL OF THE YEAR THAT MOST PAGANS RECOGNIZE IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER, THOUGH THE NAME MAY BE DIFFERENT, BUT THEY HAVE THE SAME CHANGES OF THE SEASONS," Cressall said.

Paganism may seem ancient and foreign, but many Christians in the Western world celebrate Pagan holidays like Christmas, Halloween and the New Year. These holidays can be traced to Pagan traditions of the pre-Christian world, Cressall said.

In ancient Rome, the "COUNTRY-DWELLERS" were allowed to keep their traditions, like Yule (NOW KNOWN AS CHRISTMAS), if they converted to Christianity. Yule was a celebration of the return of the sun and son (OF THE GODDESS) and pine trees were decorated as a symbol of life because they remain green all year long, Cressall said.

Another myth about Paganism is that it is just one religion, Cressall said. Instead, it encompasses all non-Abrahamic religious traditions such as Wicca, Druidism or Celtic Reconstructionism and shamanism from cultures dating back hundreds and hundreds of years like Egyptian, Norse, Roman, American Indian and Irish.

"PEOPLE SAY I'VE BEEN PAGAN MY WHOLE LIFE, I JUST HADN'T FIGURED OUT HOW TO ARTICULATE IT RIGHT. I'VE BEEN PRACTICING PAGANISM FOR SIX YEARS NOW," Cressall said.

Cressall follows Celtic Reconstructionism, which she said takes anthropological and historical evidence to reconstruct how her Welsh and Irish ancestors worshipped and lived, while making it applicable in the modern world.

"IT DOESN'T MEAN WE GO BUILD A HUT AND GO ON CATTLE RAIDS," Cressall said.

Celtic reconstructionism is also known as Druidism, which Cressall said means "WISDOM-KEEPERS." Many modern off-shoots of Paganism are based in Celtic beliefs or traditional Western hermetic magic or ceremonial magic, Cressall said.

"WHILE I KNOW MY FAMILY IS WELSH AND IRISH, YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE OR KNOW YOUR ANCESTRY TO PRACTICE, IT JUST HELPS ME CONNECT MORE, MAKING THINGS APPLICABLE TO MY LIFE," Cressall said.

"TECHNICALLY I AM NOT PAGAN, I AM AGNOSTIC MEANING I ACCEPT ALL RELIGIONS, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE IN A PARTICULAR ONE. I AM LEANING TOWARDS PAGANISM DUE TO CERTAIN EXPERIENCES I'VE HAD," said senior Tein Millsap.

During a life-or-death experience a couple of years ago, Millsap said something powerful happened.

"OUT OF THE DARKNESS CAME A WHITE TIGER AND CALLED ME AN IDIOT AND I WOKE UP. IT WASN'T UNTIL I MET ANYA (GIBBONS) and she told me about Paganism, that I realized it was a shamanistic experience, which I am still researching," Millsap said.

Anya Gibbons, a junior majoring in journalism and communication, said Shamanism deals with the power of animals, she said. The Shaman draws power from certain animal spirits, like spirit guides of the American Indians.

Cressall said, "Shamanism is known around the world, and Paganism is traced to shamanic traditions."

Gibbons said she has been Wiccan since she was 15.

"I am your official witch, but unlike Harry Potter, witches can be both male and female. Wizards and witches are different things, and we are never warlocks," Gibbons said.

Warlock is a derogatory term meaning rule-breaker, she said, and the word "WITCH" actually comes from an ancient word that means "HOLY".

"PEOPLE THINK I AM TRYING TO CONTROL PEOPLE'S WILL WITH SPELLS, BUT SPELLS ARE MORE OF JUST A PRAYER. MY PRAYERS ARE MORE FLAMBOYANT AND ACCENTUATED, INSTEAD OF KNEELING BY MY BED TO PRAY, I HAVE CANDLES AND BLOW STUFF INTO FIRES," Gibbons said.

Wicca started around 1965 in England and spread with the American hippie movement, Cressall said. However, she said, Hollywood has somewhat demonized Wiccans.

"THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD OR BAD WITCH. THAT IS LIKE ASKING IF YOU ARE A GOOD OR BAD CHRISTIAN. WE ARE JUST PEOPLE. WE DO NOT SACRIFICE ANIMALS OR EAT BABIES, BUT WE DO BELIEVE WE HAVE DIVINITY IN OURSELVES, THE GODS AREN'T ABOVE US," Gibbons said.

Gibbons said the followers believe in a god and goddess.

"I TEND TO LEAN TOWARDS THE GODDESS NOW BECAUSE I SPENT THE FIRST 15 YEARS OF MY LIFE WORSHIPPING THE GOD, SO I THINK I CAN NOW FOCUS ON JUST THE GODDESSES FOR AWHILE," Gibbons said. "However, I think for god to really be what god is you need both the male and female together."

The god and goddess can have many names. Gibbons said a lot of people adopt names from ancient Greek mythology like Demeter for the goddess and Erebus for the god.

The theme of the god and goddess is found throughout many Pagan cultures, Cressall said.

"I LOVE THE CONNECTIVITY OF EVERYTHING. THE MALE AND FEMALE DEITIES ARE PART OF EACH OTHER AND NOTHING WITHOUT EACH OTHER," Gibbons said.

Cressall said, "We need these stories, myths and cycles as humans to make us better people. It is kind of like a kick in the pants to get going."

The Churc And Eucharistic Sacrifice

281 In What Way Does The Church Participate In The Eucharistic Sacrifice Part 2 Continuation
IN WHAT WAY DOES THE CHURCH PARTICIPATE IN THE EUCHARISTIC SACRIFICE? (PART 2 CONTINUATION)

(Comp 281 repetition) In the Eucharist the sacrifice of Christ becomes also the sacrifice of the members of his Body. The lives of the faithful, their praise, their suffering, their prayers, their work, are united to those of Christ. In as much as it is a sacrifice, the Eucharist is likewise offered for all the faithful, living and dead, in reparation for the sins of all and to obtain spiritual and temporal benefits from God. The Church in heaven is also united to the offering of Christ."IN BRIEF" (CCC 1414) As sacrifice, the Eucharist is also offered in reparation for the sins of the living and the dead and to obtain spiritual or temporal benefits from God.

TO DEEPEN AND EXPLAIN (CCC 1371) The Eucharistic sacrifice is also offered for "the faithful departed" who "have died in Christ but are not yet wholly purified" (Council of Trent (1562): DS 1743), so that they may be able to enter into the light and peace of Christ: Put this body anywhere! Don't trouble yourselves about it! I simply ask you to remember me at the Lord's altar wherever you are (St. Monica, before her death, to her sons, St. Augustine and his brother; "Conf". 9, 11, 27: PL 32, 775). Then, we pray [in the anaphora] for the holy fathers and bishops who have fallen asleep, and in general for all who have fallen asleep before us, in the belief that it is a great benefit to the souls on whose behalf the supplication is offered, while the holy and tremendous Victim is present...

By offering to God our supplications for those who have fallen asleep, if they have sinned, we... offer Christ sacrificed for the sins of all, and so render favorable, for them and for us, the God who loves man (St. Cyril of Jerusalem, "Catech. myst". 5, 9. 10: PG 33, 1116-1117). ON REFLECTIOn (CCC 1370) To the offering of Christ are united not only the members still here on earth, but also those already "in the glory of heaven". In communion with and commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints, the Church offers the Eucharistic sacrifice.

In the Eucharist the Church is as it were at the foot of the cross with Mary, united with the offering and intercession of Christ. (CCC 1372) St. Augustine admirably summed up this doctrine that moves us to an ever more complete participation in our Redeemer's sacrifice which we celebrate in the Eucharist: This wholly redeemed city, the assembly and society of the saints, is offered to God as a universal sacrifice by the high priest who in the form of a slave went so far as to offer himself for us in his Passion, to make us the Body of so great a head...

Such is the sacrifice of Christians: "we who are many are one Body in Christ" the Church continues to reproduce this sacrifice in the sacrament of the altar so well-known to believers wherein it is evident to them that in what she offers she herself is offered (St. Augustine, "De civ. Dei", 10, 6: PL 41, 283; cf. Rom 12:5).

Newgrange Html

Newgrange Html
midwinter sunrise lighting up the interior of the passage grave at
Newgrange. In Egypt, the Temple at Abu Simbel, built for Ramses II, incorporated the same ?light show?, occurring at Ramses II?s birthday.
When the temple was lifted to higher grounds when Lake Nasser and the Aswan Dam were created, the engineers made sure that the phenomenon could still be observed. Today, thousands of tourists still gather to watch one of the great sights in Egypt. At Newgrange, only a handful, lottery-picked people are invited to attend the phenomenon, which is visible two to three days each way from the solstice. For the absolute majority of tourists, the only manner in which the phenomenon is visible is by switching off the electric lights inside, and recreate the
sunlight by a directional spotlight.

The megalithic mound of Newgrange sits along the river Boyne and is part of Ireland?s best known sacred complex, known as Brugh na Boinne, the ?Bend of the Boyne?. Why here? The river Boyne, or Boand, means White Cow and as the White Cow Goddess, the river is said to reflect the
heavenly river, the Milky Way. This ?Avenue of the Dead? was also a physical boundary, between the provinces of Ulster and Meath.
Furthermore, the waters of the river Boyne were also said to offer the gift of second sight, showing not only its sacred but also initiatory power.
Newgrange is impressive, but not overly impressive, even though an
estimated 200,000 tons of granite stone from Dundalk Bay, plus white quartz from the Wicklow mountains, were used to create this cairn. It was surrounded by a circle of standing stones, of which only twelve of a probable 38 remain.
What has made the site spectacular is the fact that the designers
allowed for an intricate solar show. However, it is less known that this light show is not limited to Newgrange, but involves various other
cairns in the complex also. After Newgrange, the sun enters a number of satellite cairns during the day, until it enters the large cairn of Dowth at sunset. One of these smaller cairns, known as cairn K, harbours the sun at midday. This means that the sunbeam is constantly contained within a cairn throughout the shortest day of the year ? as if ?loosing?
it could mean it would never be found again. Newgrange is therefore merely the ?introduction? to a spectacle that lasts the entire shortest day of the year, with the finale at Dowth.

Where does this leave Knowth, the third large cairn in this bend of the Boyne? Knowth is actually the largest cairn in Ireland and was built 500 years before Newgrange. Yet despite these two important qualifying
characteristics, it has less mythology connected to it than Newgrange.
Still, Knowth equally has a solar light show; its passage is illuminated at sunrise on the equinoxes (March 21 and September 21).

/Knowth, and the river Boyne ((c) Michael Fox, www.knowth.com
)/

Knowth is also known to house a calendar stone, namely kerbstone 52, also known as SW22. On it are a group of crescent shapes arranged around the large boulder. Some criticism has been directed towards the
interpretation of this stone?s carvings as a lunar calendar. Still, at present, the consensus is that the stone records a calendar. The stone?s petroglyphic symbols thus suggest that the ancient Irish astronomers might have been able to synchronise the lunar cycles with the solar year. Gillies MacBain further observed that the great mound at Knowth has a kerb of 127 boulders, which is half the number of tropical moons in the Metonic cycle. Seeing they were able to perfectly align Newgrange to the midwinter sunrise, similar knowledge about and incorporation of lunar phenomena should not perplex anyone.

But back to Newgrange. Author Hugh Kearns has suggested that when the sun penetrated the passage of Newgrange, the sun struck a gold disc that hung inside. There is no archaeological evidence for this, but let us continue in this speculation.
He believes that the refracted light would then strike the Boyne river.
Kearns tested his thesis on a 1:24 scale model, which backed up his findings. But it does rely on the presence of a disc, of which there is no evidence. The scenario itself seems unlikely, but what is known, is that while the sun penetrated into the passage, the same rays would hit the white quartz of the mound, making it glow in the early morning
light. Kearns also believes that the event was accompanied by music, so that Newgrange was a ?sound and light? show. His conclusions have
independently been backed up by research by Paul Devereux, who
investigated the features of Newgrange. He did an acoustical analysis of the structure, which showed that there was indeed an ancient sound and light show.

Despite the above unfounded speculation, Kearns does point out that vast numbers of salmon span in the Boyne Valley at the time of the winter solstice. Salmon were consulted by Celtic heroes for their wisdom and forethought; to eat a salmon, or Eo Feasa, was to gain immediate
knowledge. They are incorporated into many myths: Gwyrhr questioned a series of wise animals, each one wiser than the previous.
The oldest and wisest of all was the salmon of Llyn Llyw. Cchulainn used the hero's salmon leap across the Pupils' Bridge to get Scthach's stronghold in order to gain access to Scthach's advanced knowledge of arms. To gain the secrets, Cchulainn had to use the hero's salmon leap to Scthach herself in order to gain the secrets reserved for her
family. Eating salmon was believed to enhance knowledge and intellect.
Let us note that the water of the river itself was believed to enhance second sight. Thus, drinking the water and eating the salmon of the river Boyne would allow the initiate the gain knowledge of the
Otherworld. It would suggest that the presence of the salmon at the winter solstice identified the site as sacred in nature, which in later millennia resulted in the area becoming a religious centre, into which the various cairns were constructed, whereby the sun penetrating into the passages and being ?caught? on the sacred day was just one aspect of a much larger and older religious experience.

Apart from salmon, the site was linked with the Boand, the Cow Goddess.
The location is known as the ?Bend of the River of the White Cow
Goddess?. Of course, the cow is the origin of milk, and hence it is a short step from Milky Way to ?Track of the White Cow?. But what could it mean?
The salmon returns to its place of birth, so that itself can create new life. The river Boyne is one such location. The salmon was identified with knowledge and mankind strives for divine knowledge, which was
believed to come from the stars, the realm where the shamans ? those with second sight ? went. Was capturing the sun on its shortest day a symbolism of how the ?power of the sun? was captured in this bend of the river Boyne, the power of which was then somehow ?transposed? onto the salmon? Those who consequently ate the salmon would acquire ?divine knowledge?, through the mediation of the solar light.

The Milky Way, and the river Boyne, was therefore a path of
enlightenment. The salmon was the shaman, the traveller, in search of his origin, but also of his destiny.
The salmon supposedly gained its knowledge by consuming the nine hazel nuts of wisdom that fell into the Well of Segais, the primary source of all knowledge in Celtic lore.
Nechtn was one of the guardians of the well, along with his brothers Flesc, Lm and Luam. No-one but they were supposed to go to the well ?
not even the gods. However, just like Adam could not control Eve with the serpent, Nechtn's wife Boand decided that she would disobey the command. As a result, the knowledge of the ?Fountain of all Knowledge?
sprang over into our realm ? echoing the story of Adam and Eve even further. Once the water was gushing into this dimension, it could no longer be stopped; the river Boyne was born.
It should not come as a surprise that like Adam and Eve, there were repercussions. In one account, she was drowned because of her, in
another she lives but is crippled ever after. Still, the river Boyne was named after her.
It is clear that she is a perfect symbol for the shaman, who goes in search of knowledge in the Otherworld, but brings it back with him ?
thus spilling the knowledge of the divine into our realm. The path the shaman travels is often identified as the Milky Way, and we note Bann is not only identified with the river Boyne, but also with the Milky Way. Finally, William Battersby, author of "The Age of Newgrange" states that Nechtain, Bann?s husband, is identified as the constellation
Orion. Nechtain was nicknamed "silver arm" because his constellation has an upraised arm. Orion was often believed to guard the Milky Way.

/Image of the winter solstice sunrise penetrating into Newgrange/

What does this mean for Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth? The waters from the Well of Segais created the river Boyne in Ireland, on whose banks sit the mighty mounds of Br na Boinne (Newgrange), Cnogba (Knowth), and Dubgad (Dowth), where some of the Gods were said to live. Boann herself was said to have lived in the Br na Boinne. Na Boinne means the river Boyne, and Bru means an otherworld palace or festive hall, existing in an eternal timeless realm of the supernatural and not as a place of human habitation. The mounds were therefore seen as houses of the gods.
Most likely, the gods were personified as sacred stones, no doubt long since removed to other locations or lost. The stones on which the sun shone on the winter solstice or the equinoxes were no doubt seen as entrance into another dimension, where the gods truly lived.
What remains today are thus merely the empty ? vacated ? houses of the god, even though each year, the sun continues to go in search of its divine relatives?

Gemstone Shapes

Gemstone Shapes
Merry Meet :)))

So as we all know certain gemstones are better for certain things, such as healing, types of energy, magick etc. Did you also know their shape can affect their usage? Today I wanted to run through some basic shapes that you may find gemstones in and their various meanings. :)

ROUND STONES: Round stones are
LONG AND THIN STONES: These stones are phallic symbols, and represent the masculine energy and the Great God. This does not necessarilly apply to quartz crystals or other crystallized stone points. These stones are energy stones and can be carried or placed on an altar to assist with energy. You can hang one on your door or mirror for protection. You can pair these stones with round stones when working love spells.

EGG SHAPED STONES: Egg shaped stones stimulate creativity and help to open your mind. They can also be used to bring fertility to a ritual or in your magick. In the past people carried egg shaped stones to help them become more fertile. They also buried them in the gardens to help with fertile crops.

SQUARE SHAPED STONES: Square shaped stones are symbolic of the Earth. They are helpful in grounding and promoting balance and stability. They also represent prosperity and abundance.

PYRAMID SHAPED STONES: These stones can be a bit harder to find. Pyramid shaped stones will concentrate energy and release it upward. So for example if you need money, you may want to place a dollar bill underneath it and the visualize money flowing up through the pyramid and out the top.

DIAMOND SHAPED STONES: Are used to attract prosperity and riches.

HEART SHAPED STONES: Heart shaped stones are symbolic of love. :) They can be used to stimulate love or draw love into your life. They help you to both receive and give love.

TRIANGLE SHAPED STONES: Triangle shaped stones are protective in nature. You can use them to guard yourself or your home. To guard your home place the in the windowsills.

L SHAPED STONES: L Shaped stones are said to bring good fortune. They can be carried or placed on your alter to assist with good luck or prosperity.

BODY SHAPED STONES: Stones that resemble various parts of the body are used in healing that type of body. For example if you are working on healing someone with a kidney issue you may wish to choose a stone shaped like a kidney.

Love and Blessings,

Asatru As An Ancient Religion

Asatru As An Ancient Religion
Without doubt, Asatru has its roots in Europe's earliest history and beyond. The gods and goddesses that are honored in Asatru are mentioned in the earliest writings across the millennia. Asatru, as an ancient religion, represents some of the earliest expressions of religious thought in Northern Europe and is probably as old as the Northern European branch of humanity itself. Concepts of holy places, feasts and sacrifices, the gods' involvement in battle, land spirits, ancestral chains, other worlds and the nature and roles of the gods and goddesses have remained similar across all of recorded time.

Across time and place, stories of Earth Gods (Vanir) and Sky Gods (Aesir) have endured. Offerings to the Earth Gods, for good harvest go as far back as we know. Requesting the blessings from the Thunder God has also been constant. Usage of such symbolism as the Fylfot goes back to the Stone Age. However, despite that fact that the Gods, Goddesses and practices of Asatru are ancient, there were many regional variations and emphases. Therefore, Asatru although ancient hasn't been static in time or place.
