Candle Spell To Cleanse And Bless A Room

Candle Spell To Cleanse And Bless A Room
This spell will cleanse a room of any negative energy, and bless the room so as to fill it with positive energy. If you need to cleanse a house, each room would require one of these - they can be made together, in one room, then moved to burn down in each room. It can be done by a solitary or a coven - particularly useful if the coven contains an Earth element and a Fire element.

Ingredients:

Basil Coriander Salt

Chamomile (can use tea) Sage Bay leaf

Rosemary Sunlight Vinegar

Appropriately coloured candle of an appropriate size to burn down and a bowl to burn it in

Timing:

Any sunny, appropriate day during the waning (removing impurities) or full moon (boost power)

Method:

Perform spell in a room with the curtains open so the sunlight can come in. Put the candle into a bowl, making it stand up by burning a bit of wax in. Put each of the ingredients (herbs can be fresh or dried) in a circle around the candle, breaking/cutting up those that need to be to do this. Put the vinegar (enough to just cover the other ingredients) in last. Light the candles, and charge the bowls (visualise that they are glowing with energy) while saying the following incantation:

"Basil to purify, coriander to bless,"

"As the candle burns, let this house become a place of peace and rest."

"Aided by the powers of fire and earth, "

"We cleanse this house and hearth."

Put the bowl somewhere where the candle can burn down (nowhere near flammable objects), and let it burn down. If not making use of the candle at that time (i.e. as a gift), put the flame out and just relight when needed. Once candle has burnt down, leave the bowl in the room for a few hours or until it is felt that the room has been cleansed.

You're welcome to share this spell, but if ever you do decide to formally publish a collection of spells (I've seen such things in book stores XD ) please get my permission before using this specific spell. I'll probably agree, but just in case I've gotten to the stage where I have my own blog/book/whatever ;)

Getting To Know Spirit

Getting To Know Spirit
I've added a bonus week to the It's Elemental, My Dear series. This week the focus is on Spirit! I honestly thought there would be opportunities to tie in Spirit with the rest of the elements but the opportunity never presented itself. Because of that, the series felt unfinished to me. I wasn't able to post because I was on vacation and camping, but the nagging feeling that I needed to do a post or two on spirit never left me.

Before we can begin working with a specific element we must learn it intimately. This means more than just learning what a chart says about it, however that can be helpful.

THE CORRESPONDENCES OF SPIRIT

Celtic name: aethyr

Alternate names: ether, akasha

Direction: Center and circumference

Colors: violet, white, black

Tool: circle, self

Ritual Representations: practitioners, deity statues, god/dess symbols, deity itself, you

Time: all times, eternity

Season: all seasons, The Wheel of the Year

Gender: none, universal

Animals: dove

Deities: all deities, in traditional Wicca the Goddess and Horned One

Symbolizes: Immanence and transcendence, everything and nothing, joy, union, transformation

Types of Spirit magick:

Circles are cast by utilizing of all elements. The compass points of a circle each represent an element as well, with the circle itself being spirit, uniting and binding all together. The circle creates an enclosed magickal space that becomes the center.

To move energy in a ritual, spell, or work of magick is to evoke Spirit.

Spirit (sometimes called ether. aether, or akasha) is the subtle spiritual essence that pervades all space. Some believe that it is not ether itself, but an ether-like substance of a spiritual rather than material nature. Spirit is the prime element present in all things, providing space, connection and balance for all Elements to exist.

EXPERIENCE THE ELEMENT SPIRIT

Spirit is our way of connecting. Our souls are said to be interdependent, meaning we are all One. Some believe this to be figurative while others believe it to be literal.

Spirit is expressed as transformation. Just as The Wheel of the Year is constantly turning and changing, everything changes. Everything but Spirit of course.

Spirit can be likened to love or courage. We know what love and courage are and can recognize their effects. Like love and courage, Spirit is nearly impossible to describe. In fact, words seem to diminish the awe and beauty of what Spirit is. Spirit is different to everyone. It is experienced differently by everyone and described differently by everyone.

Spirit is present in our everyday existence at all times. It connects everything and everybody throughout all time. One of my favorite exercises to experience Spirit is to stand or sit right where you are. Stand still and close your eyes if you'd like. I want you to imagine what is going on in your building right now. Once you feel you have connected with them, expand it to your street. Then to your neighborhood. Feel yourself connected with everyone in your area. Now expand that to your entire town or city. Now your entire state. Now imagine you are connected with everyone in your country. Now the entire continent. Now feel your connection to everyone on the planet. Feel your connection to all the plants and animals. Imagine everything and every person as One. Living and breathing as One. Experiencing everything that life has to offer as One.

Warning: Feeling everyone and everything for good or ill can be extremely intense and sometimes draining, especially when you think about all the negativity in the world. Try to focus on the positive aspects as best you can so you don't become overwhelmed. However, remember if you deny connection with all negative things you will only be experiencing half of the world.

Challenge: Once you have mastered connecting with the entire planet, expand your awareness to the entire universe. Expand your awareness to go beyond time, experiencing the past, present, and future all at once.

Eat something or ground yourself in another way if you feel drained, then record your experiences in your spiritual diary or book of shadows.

The Lonely Empress The Life

The Lonely Empress The Life Of Elisabeth Of Austria
I have been fascinated with the life of Empress Elisabeth ever since I first saw the Winterhalter portrait picture on the left. She looks over her shoulder at the viewer, with her glorious auburn hair covered in diamonds. Despite the sweet expression on her face, there is a hint of melancholia in her eyes, as if she's thinking about the suffocating atmosphere at the Austrian court, or planning the days until her next escape abroad, where she could breathe. Researching her life, I was struck by the parallels between Elisabeth and the late Princess Diana. And if I hadn't come to that conclusion on my own, Andrew Sinclair in biography "Death by Fame" emphasizes the parallels in the last chapter. Both women suffered from eating disorders, lack of self-esteem, were known for their great beauty, were trapped in unhappy marriages and royal protocol, sought fullfillment in beauty and holistic treatments, and both had tragic deaths. Both found even greater fame after their deaths, becoming icons.

Elisabeth was born on December 24, 1837, from an early age she was called 'Sisi' by her family. Elisabeth was never meant to be Empress. That honor was supposed to go to her sister Helene, who had been trained since birth to be an Empress. The marriage was meant to make up for the marital misalliance of her mother, Ludovica, the daughter of Ludwig I of Bavaria. While her sisters had made grand marriages, Elisabeth to the Prussian Emperor and Sophie to the Crown Prince of Austria, Ludovica had married her first cousin, Duke Max, who wasn't even a Royal Highness until he was elevated to that title.

Nor did Max have any real interest in being or acting like a Prince. He preferred to spend his time with artists, gypsies, and circus performers rather than at court. He even set up his own drinking club of 14 Knights of the Round Table, and then drank them under it. He wrote poetry and rode horses, scattering bastards around the countryside from his romantic liaisons. Ludovica would get pissed off and freeze him out, moving the children to a different wing of the palace, until he charmed his way back into her affections (and her pants) leaving her with yet another child. By the time Ludovica was 40, she had given birth to 8 children. Elisabeth was her second daughter, a dreamy child who preferred spending time with her adored father and riding horses then sitting in a stuffy classroom at her lessons. Elisabeth adored her father, spending time with him, whenever he was around. Occasionally he would take her out to meet the people. "If you and I Sisi," he once said, "had not been princely born, we could have performed in a circus." Once they even performed as strolling players outside a beer garden.

When she was 15, Elisabeth, her mother, and her sister Helene went to Bad Ischl to stay with their cousin, the Emperor Franz Joseph, so that he could have a look at Helene. Instead, the young emperor fell in love with Elisabeth instead. Although not as beautiful as her sister, Elisabeth had almond shaped brown eyes, and auburn hair which fell to her knees when unbound. She was shy and awkward around the Emperor but he was entranced. At a ball, he not only gave her a dance bouquet but all the flowers that were meant for all the other ladies. The next day, her mother told her that the Emperor wanted to marry her. Despite her own misgivings about her fitness for the role she was about to undertake, Elisabeth couldn't dare refuse the honor. And she was fond of Franz Joseph. If only he weren't the Emperor!

Back home, Elisabeth underwent a crash course in history and other subjects to prepare her for her new role as Empress. Finally on April 23, 1853 in St. Augustine's Church in Vienna, she and Franz Josef were married. From the beginning Elisabeth was absolutely miserable. She wrote to her mother, "I am on show like a freak in a circus.' Like Marie Antoinette when she married the Dauphin and had to leave everything Austrian behind her, Elisabeth was allowed to bring no one from Bavaria with her to Austria. The court protocal had become completely rigid, so different from the days when the Empress Maria Theresa reigned. She also had to deal with the mother-in-law from hell. The Archduchess Sophie was not particularly pleased with her son's choice. She constantly criticized Elisabeth, everything from her teeth (Elisabeth stopped smiling later on because the mercury treatments for venereal disease discolored her teeth), to Elisabeth's need to escape by spending hours riding horses in the park. When Elisabeth's first child was born, a daughter Gisela, Sophie critized her for not bearing a son. Still, she made sure that Elisabeth had very little to do with her the raising of her children. She referred to her daughter-in-law as a 'silly young mother.' Her mother-in-law chose the Countess Esterhazy-Liechtenstein to be the Mistress of the Household, but she 'treated the young Empress in the manner of a governess.' She was constantly reminded that people in Southern Germany had no manners compared to Austrians who were perfect.

Beseiged by all sides, constantly critized, Elisabeth turned inward. Feeling out of control, she focused on the one thing that she could control which was her eating. Never very robust, now after bearing three children, she hardly ate at all. She was determined to keep her figure at all costs. At five foot six inches tall, Elisabeth made sure her weight rarely went above 105 pounds. She had a gymnasium set up in her apartments so that she could exercise. When she wasn't in the gymnasium, she rode her horses up to 8 hours a day. Some days though she was so depressed that she would just stay in her room crying. She had to fight to end the practice of throwing out her shoes after one wearing. And she refused to wear gloves when she ate despite the fact that it had been the fashion. When she was told that her bare hands were a deviation from the rule, she replied, "then let the deviation now be the rule.' She also made a cult of her beauty. Her pride and joy was her long auburn hair. A silk cloth was placed beneath her hair while it was brushed, and it was washed with a combination of brandy and egg whites. After her hair was brushed, Elisabeth would check to see how many hairs had fallen out. If it was too many, she had a meltdown.

Elisabeth finally gave birth to the requisate heir, Crown Prince Rudolf, but her relationship with her husband had deteriorated. Some biographers believe that Franz Josef may have given her a veneral disease picked up from the actresses that he had favored before his marriage, or that she discovered that he was having affairs. Whatever the cause, she suffered a nervous breakdown which necessitated her spending months traveling on a yacht loaned by the English Royal family. She traveled to Corfu which she loved. When she returned, a more assertive Elisabeth appeared. She had fallen in love with Hungary even before she became Empress, and a visit to that country increased her love. She began to surround herself with attendants from the Hungarian aristocracy, insisting that they only speak Hungarian to her. A castle, Godollo, had been given to the royal couple. Elisabeth made Godollo her primary residence. She also began to take more of an interest in her children, despite the Archduchess Sophie. In exchange, Elisabeth agreed to spend more time acting like the Empress at official court functions. She also encouraged the Emperor to make Hungary a seperate kingdom, giving the country a measure of independance, and that they should be crowned King and Queen of Hungary. She had been influenced by Count Andrassy, who was the foreign minister, in her views of Hungarian nationality. For the rest of her life, Hungary and its people would be important to her.

While in Hungary, Elisabeth started a riding school, spending many hours learning how to train the horses that she loved. She also began to spend time visiting hospitals and mental asylums, feeling a great affinity for the sick and the mentally ill, perhaps because she suffered from bouts of melancholy which she blamed on the Wittelsbach temperment. When she was back in Austria, Elisabeth suffered from increasing bouts of paranoia, she hated being looked at, and would hide behind parasols, a heavy veil or a fan to prevent people from getting too close a look. Still, she had an almost compulsive need to know what people in Vienna thought of her, which wasn't very complimentary. As loved as she was by the Hungarian people, she was hated by the Austrians, who felt that she neglected her duties as Empress while traveling abroad constantly on hunting trips to England.

After a brief reconciliation with the Emperor, Elisabeth gave birth to her fourth and last child, the Archduchess Marie-Valerie at Godollo. From then on the two would live seperate lives, only coming together for official functions and trips. She encouraged Franz-Josef's relationship with the actress Katharina Schratt. She even commissioned a portrait of the actress by the court artist Heinrich von Angeli as a gift to her husband, putting the royal seal of approval on the affair. Probably she reasoned that it was better for the Emperor to have an official mistress to keep him out of trouble. Katharina could be the wife to the Emperor that Elisabeth could not. Although she was not as beautiful as Elisabeth, she was a warm and loving woman. Elisabeth encouraged the relationship, she even spend time with Katharina hiking in the mountains, sharing beauty and diet tips. After Crown Prince Rudolf's death, Elisabeth encouraged Katharina to comfort the Emperor in his grief, while she continued her wanderings.

Elisabeth, while she had many admirers, seems to have been faithful to the Emperor. Given her paranoia that she was being spied on, it would have been impossible for her to have a lover. Everyone in Vienna certainly would have known about it. One of Elisabeth's admirers, was a Scottish soldier, George 'Bay' Middleton who Elisabeth met while hunting in England with the 5th Earl Spencer. But Middleton's role was strictly confined to horse racing and hunting. He helped her find her mounts when she traveled to Ireland and England, as well as in Hungary. Viennese society was shocked that she preferred to spend time with someone who was not of noble birth. Her son Rudolf was particularly distressed by his mother's friendship and cut Middleton dead at a ball in London. It caused a rift with her son that was never healed.

As she grew older, Elisabeth became more obssessed with preserving her beauty. She began to live on a diet of meat juice, fresh milk (she brought her own cows with her whenever she traveled), and egg whites mixed with salt. She slept with hot towels around her waist, and wore a silk mask that contained raw veal. Proud of her twenty inch waist, she had her riding costumes sewed on. She also fenced as a way of keeping her weight down. To keep her complexion soft, she would cover her cheeks with purified honey, and then a protective ointment of strawberries crushed in vaseline. Onions and Peruvian balsam was added to the cognac she washed her hair with. Like Princess Diana in the 20th century, newspaper articles were written on her fashion sense, her diet and exercise regimes, her reputed lovers, and her passion for hunting.

When she traveled to Ireland to hunt incognito (although everyone knew what her alias was), she hailed as a heroine by the Irish because of her sympathy for Hungary. Unfortunately her trips to Ireland damaged England's relations with Austria. Home Rule for Ireland was a political hot potato at the time and the Empress's presence even though she was on holiday seemed to support the Irish. She also angered people by hunting on Ash Wednesday. Elisabeth didn't spend all her time hunting and exercising. She also wrote poetry, and began to study both Ancient and Modern Greek. When she had to give up hunting because of her sciatica, and took up walking instead, she would have lecturers walk with her while reading Greek to her.

In 1889, Elisabeth's world was shattered when Crown Prince Rudolf and his young mistress, Mary Vetsera were found dead at the hunting lodge Mayerling in an apparent murder/suicide. Elisabeth and Rudolf were still estranged. She had objected to his marriage to Princess Stephanie of Belgium, seeing it as more of a political marriage than any real sympathy between the two. When she met the Princess, she found her to be stupid and lazy. Elisabeth was right to be concerned. The marriage broke down after the birth of their daughter Elisabeth. Rudolf went back to his opera singers and dancers. At the age of 30, he was kept from any real meaningful role by his father, leaving him at loose ends. Like Elisabeth, Rudolf was devoted to the idea of Hungarian independance, he wrote articles under a pseudonym for a radical newspaper. Feeling depressed, and facing years before he would be Emperor, he took his own life. After her son's death, Elisabeth told her daughter Valerie, "All the people who have had nothing but evil to say of me ever since I came here, now have the satisfaction of knowing that I shall leave this ife without a trace of myself remaining in Austria."

Elisabeth became convinced that some strain of madness in the Wittelsbachs and the Hapsburgs contributed to her son's death and that the family was cursed. She was aided in her belief by her cousin Ludwig II's death by drowning after being declared insane, and her sister Sophie's death in a fire in Paris. Wearing only black from head to toe, she continued her wanderings, constantly trying to find a sense of peace that eluded her. Her favorite places were Lake Geneva, Corfu, the French Riviera, and Bad Ischl in Austria where she and Franz Josef became bethrothed. Like Princess Diana, Elisabeth hated the idea of having security spying on her, and following her around. She often made it difficult for them by not alerting them to her plans, and exhausting them on her walks. Elisabeth didn't fear death. She was a fatalist, "I am always on the march to meet my fate. Nothing can prevent me from meeting it on the day on which it is writen that I must do so."

On September 10, 1898, when she was 60 years old, Elisabeth was stabbed in the heart by an Italian anarchist named Luigi Lucheni. Lucheni had been alerted to her arrival by the press which announced her visit despite the fact that she was traveling under an alias. Her assassin had been waiting for the chance to kill a royal. When he was interrogated, he claimed, "I struck the first crowned head that crossed my way. I don't care. I wanted to make an example and I succeeded." She had been walking along the promenade in Lake Geneva, about to board a steamship with her lady-in-waiting Countess Sztaray. She had no protection, having asked the police department in Geneva to remove the detectives placed around her hotel as a precaution. After Lucheni had run off, Elisabeth was asked if she was injured, she said she had not. "It is nothing." Not realizing the severity of her injury, she boarded the ship. Her corset had contained the bleeding until was removed. She was brought back to her hotel but she had died on the stretcher. She was buried in the Imperial crypt in Vienna.

Elisabeth of Austria spent her life yearning for peace and a measure of happiness but the tragedy of her life was that she never really found it. She would have been happier married to a minor princeling, but it was her fate to be Empress of Austria. If only she had found a way to reach ou to the Emperor, to find a way to help him ease his burdens, she might have found a purpose and been happier. It might have been possible for her to have forged a partnership like Victoria and Albert or The Crown Princess of Prussia and the Crown Prince. Elisabeth, unfortunately,,had no role models on which to pattern a marriage. Certainly not her parent, or the Emperor's parents. Even her earlyy interest in politics and Hungarian independance waned, as she began to believe that there was no point. Elisabeth's life wasn't completely selfish, but she kept her acts of charity mainly private. She would often spontaneously visit hospitals in Austrial and Hungary. She had genuuine concern for the poor, the insane, and working women. Unlike Princess Diana, who was able to use the press to promote herself and her causes, Elisabeth didn't have that luxury, nor would she have sought out the press. While Diana was able to find a measure of fulfillment and satisfaction in her work and her children, Elisabeth spent her life fruitlessly searching for something that she never found.

After Elisabeth's death, she became the subject of numerous

Scattering Rose Petals Under The Moon

Scattering Rose Petals Under The Moon
courtesy of Marie's Freebies blog

It has been a busy month and the rest of the summer looks to be the same. This week I am at the shop three days caring for the crystals and advising in my capacity as "Resident Witch" - I love my job! It seems like we were just honoring the Dark of the Moon and now, here is the Full Rose Moon, a moon I love celebrating! This is so much a women's moon, for me and mine anyway.

There are quite a few names for July's Full Moon, in fact Rose Moon may apply to June as well. In June I celebrate The Moon of Fruit and Flowering, which is a celebration I created myself. Here are For our celebration of July, the main theme is the Rose Moon, but adding Claiming and Blessing as well. The altar is dressed with roses, both fresh and dried petals and buds. Rosewater to cleanse with and a special rose blend oil for anointing are also included. We invoke the Goddesses with a calling out of Their names and the energies we associate with Them and claim our power and worth with a prayer for affirmation of self-worth. Offerings, a libation and divination are included among other things.

As our coven is dedicated to Hekate, we naturally honor Her, but include other Goddesses as well, such as:Aphrodite, Persephone, Selene, Hestia, Sulis, Rosmerta, Lilith, The Fates and Ananka. Yes, this is mixing our cultures certainly, but for this ritual, we honor ALL Goddesses, of all cultures and all women. For us, it's our Dianic/Feminist thing!

I hope you are blessed by the feminine power of the rose this full moon.

Blessings nine!

1. Mabon/fall equinox! Two days a year, the Northern and Southern hemispheres recieve the same amount of sunlight. Not only that, each receives the same amount of light as they do dark - this is because the earth is tilted at a right angle to the sun, and the sun is directly over the equator. In Latin, the word equinox translates to "equal night." The autumn equinox takes place on or near September 21, and its spring counterpart falls around March 21. If you're in the Northern hemisphere, the days will begin getting shorter after the autumn equinox and the nights will grow longer - in the Southern hemisphere, the reverse is true. Global Traditions: The idea of a harvest festival is nothing new. In ancient Greece, Oschophoria was a festival held in the fall to celebrate the harvesting of grapes for wine. In the 1700's, the Bavarians came up with Oktoberfest, which actually begins in the last week of September, and it was a time of great feasting and merriment, still in existence today. Giving Thanks: Although the traditional American holiday of Thanksgiving falls in November, many cultures see the second harvest time of the fall equinox as a time of giving thanks. Originally, the American Thanksgiving holiday was celebrated on October 3, which makes a lot more sense agriculturally. It was later moved by Franklin Roosevelt in a bid to help post-Depression holiday sales. Symbols of the Season: The harvest is a time of thanks, and also a time of balance - after all, there are equal hours of daylight and darkness. While we celebrate the gifts of the earth, we also accept that the soil is dying. We have food to eat, but the crops are brown and going dormant. Warmth is behind us, cold lies ahead. Some symbols of Mabon include: Mid-autumn vegetables, like squashes and gourds Apples and anything made from them, such as cider or pies Seeds and seed pods Baskets, symbolizing the gathering of crops Grapes, vines, wine Feasting and Friends: Early agricultural societies understood the importance of hospitality - it was crucial to develop a relationship with your neighbors, because they might be the ones to help you when your family ran out of food. Many people, particularly in rural villages, celebrated the harvest with great deals of feasting, drinking, and eating. After all, the grain had been made into bread, beer and wine had been made, and the cattle were brought down from the summer pastures for the coming winter. Magic and Mythology: Nearly all of the myths and legends popular at this time of the year focus on the themes of life, death, and rebirth. Not much of a surprise, when you consider that this is the time at which the earth begins to die before winter sets in! Demeter and Her Daughter Perhaps the best known of all the harvest mythologies is the story of Demeter and Persephone. Demeter was a goddess of grain and of the harvest in ancient Greece. Her daughter, Persephone, caught the eye of Hades, god of the underworld. When Hades abducted Persephone and took her back to the underworld, Demeter's grief caused the crops on earth to die and go dormant. By the time she finally recovered her daughter, Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds, and so was doomed to spend six months of the year in the underworld. These six months are the time when the earth dies, beginning at the time of the autumn equinox. The Sumerian goddess Inanna is the incarnation of fertility and abundance. Inanna descended into the underworld where her sister, Ereshkigal, ruled. Erishkigal decreed that Inanna could only enter her world in the traditional ways - stripping herself of her clothing and earthly posessions. By the time Inanna got there, Erishkigal had unleashed a series of plagues upon her sister, killing Inanna. While Inanna was visiting the underworld, the earth ceased to grow and produce. A vizier restored Inanna to life, and sent her back to earth. As she journeyed home, the earth was restored to its former glory. If you choose to celebrate Mabon, give thanks for the things you have, and take time to reflect on the balance within your own life, honoring both the darkness and the light. Invite your friends and family over for a feast, and count the blessings that you have among kin and community.

Funerals Suicide Hope And General Thoughts

Funerals Suicide Hope And General Thoughts
Suicide is becoming a rather too common occurrence. I have learned that if you read in the local paper that "NN died unexpectedly at his/her residence on dd/mmm" it is quite likely that the person committed suicide.

There is also a lot of gloominess with the number of deaths in the town at present.

A couple of thoughts have occurred to me which may or may not be fair. I'd be interested in readers' thoughts:

* This paragraph from my Easter homily:

To abandon faith is to abandon hope and ultimately to lose any sense of the purpose of life. To journey in faith is to live by hope, and to live a life of the deepest charity - love - united with the Risen Christ in this life, so that we shall live forever with him in the next.

* Where a local population is ageing and the birthrate is in decline, deaths/funerals are bound to outnumber births/baptisms. This will lead to a general gloom in the community, possibly perpetuating a cycle of despair.

Funeral liturgies at funeral homes do not quite do it in the way a funeral liturgy in the parish church does. In our parish, the parishioners love to provide hospitality (i.e. a good luncheon) for the family and mourners. We want to provide a dignfied liturgy with a choir and organist. We want to bring the body of the deceased person - who entered upon the "door of faith" when they were baptised - into the church where they began their lifetime journey of faith which leads inevitably to the "door of death" to eternal life.

The parish church is a sacred place where the Lord is present both sacramentally and spiritually. It is a place hallowed by the prayers of so many generations of faithful catholics. There is a natural experience of the Communion of Saints, so important at the moment of death and grief.

Having said that, the local funeral home is a very dignified one, run by a faithful catholic who does everything possible to ensure that the funeral is carried out with reverence. So I have conducted funeral liturgies there. I do, however, observe the liturgical norms fully. The funeral service is carried out in the same way as it would be in church: a crucifix in a prominent position, the symbols of the Gospel Book and crucifix placed upon the coffin, the people invited to stand and sit as they would in church. Of course, no one wants to sings hymns in the funeral home and so there is no music during the funeral liturgy itself (I will not have recorded music played while we just sit and listen), apart from the "In paradisum" which I sing whilst sprinkling the casket/urn during the final commendation.

While extending the warmest possible invitation to the family to have the funeral of their dearly beloved departed in the church, one cannot refuse to hold it in the funeral home, and there is always the possibility of reaching out to those who perhaps have fallen away from attendance at church or who are simply non-churchgoers. I have recently had a very good experience of encountering some good young people who are rediscovering the Christian faith in one or another denomination even if their parents/grandparents are not particularly diligent in attendance at any particular church.

I now experience the several generations of people who have been lost to the Church. Why did they leave? Did the upheavals in liturgy and catechetical formation of the last forty years have anything to do with it? I cannot help thinking it did. Good liturgy and clear teaching will strengthen the faith of those who come to church. As for those who do not experience the now happily re-reformed liturgy of their parish church, we need to find every opportunity of reaching out to them and giving them reasons for hope in eternal life.

Wow! What an amazing book! The tag line is "A Divine Guide to Finding Love and Happiness," which makes it sound like something along the lines of a quick fix Wiccan spell book.

This book is, instead, a guide to life; specifically, the living of the magickal life every day in every situation. If more women would read this book, internalize the very wise lessons and embody the Goddesses as they are represented here, we would surely rule the world (and find love and happiness as well).

Thirty-six Goddesses or so are divided up into categories such as "Love and Romance, Work and Finance, Family Life and Friendships" and such. The choices of Goddesses represented span many different pantheons and are a perfect mix for imbibing Average Woman with grace, self-respect, compassion, independence and just about every other attribute we should be expressing into the world. Each section has an entry detailing who the Goddess is, how to invite Her into your life and how to keep Her with you.

This book is a must-read for women and a beautiful copendeum of information about the Female Divine.

Arbor Low Stone Circle

Arbor Low Stone Circle
These misty and atmospheric pictures show Arbor Low stone circle, a huge Neolithic henge monument in the Peak District. Arbor Low is so impressive it is sometimes called the "Stonehenge of the North".

The megalith consists of 46 large and 13 smaller stones arranged in a circle with a group of stones in the centre. What is unusual about this henge is that the stones are all lying flat on the ground. One idea is that they were once upright and would have looked very much like Stonehenge, in the south of England, but were pushed over by Christians who thought the area was cursed. There is little evidence to prove or disprove the theory, but it seems plausible.

I was sent these beautiful photos of Arbor Low earlier this year by a reader of A Bad Witch's Blog who asked not to be named. I used one of the lovely pictures as a Pagan Eye post, but saved these to post at around midsummer - when many pagans think of visiting stone circles and other megaliths to celebrate the solstice.

As the pictures show, the ancient monument can be a bit bleak when the weather is bad, but on a sunny day it would be a fantastic place to visit.

Last week, I wrote about Sunkenkirk (Swinside) stone circle and I'll be posting more about stone circles and other megaliths in the run-up to midsummer.

Childbirth Spells

Childbirth Spells

Invocation For Childbirth-

~Orphic Hymn 2 to Prothhyraea [Artemis]

To Prothyraia [Artemis],

Fumigation from Storax.

...

O venerable Goddess,

hear my prayer,

for labour pains are thy peculiar care.

In thee,

when stretched upon the bed of grief,

the sex,

as in a mirror,

view relief.

Guard of the race,

endued with gentle mind,

to helpless youth benevolent and kind;

benignant nourisher;

great nature's key belongs to no divinity but thee.

Thou dwellest with all immanifest to sight,

and solemn festivals are thy delight.

Thine is the task

to loose the virgin's zone

and thou in every work art seen and known.

With births you sympathise,

though pleased to see

the numerous offspring of fertility.

When racked with labour pangs,

and sore distressed

the sex invoke thee,

as the soul's sure rest;

for thou Eileithyia alone

canst give relief to pain,

which art attempts to ease,

but tries in vain.

Artemis Eileithyia,

venerable power,

who bringest relief

in labour's dreadful hour;

hear,

Prothyraia

and make the infant race thy constant care."

Spell For Easy Childbirth-

~From: Crone's Book of Magical Words

To use the herb Motherwort

for an Easy Travail

...

When motherwort, undaunted weed,

Has sprung and flowered and gone to seed,

Gather the stalks with heads and leaves,

Tie them tin cords to five strong sheaves;

Batter their tips against a wall

Until the seeds, sharp-spined, shall fall,

And when they are scattered upon the ground,

These words will render the womb unbound:

Seeds that wound,

Husks that bind,

Leave only peace

And joy behind:
Take away pain,

Let strength remain.

Untie the stalks and strip them bare,

Fold their leaves in a velvet square,

Sew up the charm with yellow thread:

As soon as the woman is brought to bed,

See that she hold it in her hand

For ease, as weeds are born from the land. Spell For Naming The Unborn-

~Found in: Crone's Book of Magical Words

When the womb is six months full,

Carry wine in a silver bowl

... To a place where sun may turn it gold;

There, on a dozen chips of wood,

Write twelve names to name the child -

Male and female, six of each;

Let them drift upon the flood,

While, with eyes closed, forth you reach

And choose the name that meets your hand:

Draw the fragment out, and stand

Facing the sun, to read its sign

Inscribed forever from this time:

Now draw others, until you find

The other sex to match its twin -

And know that either name is good,

So given by sun and wine and wood.

Lumanarile In Superstitii Farmece Si Vise

Lumanarile In Superstitii Farmece Si Vise

O candela bruna aprinsa in fiecare camera a casei, in ajunul zilei de Intampinarea Domnului, are darul de a atrage norocul si a izgoni spiritele rele.

O lumanare parfumata cu laur arsa complet aduce noroc in casa si bani in buzunar.

O lumanare stinsa brusc in timpul unei ceremonii nuptiale anunta o casatorie scurta si nefericita.

Daca vrei sa recastigi dragostea unei persoane, infinge doua ace sau bolduri in fitilul unei lumanari aprinse, in timp ce rostesti cu glas tare numele celui pe care vrei sa-l aduci inapoi la tine.

"Bani"

O flacara inalta si dreapta a unei lumanari, in timpul unei sedinte de spiritism, semnifica prezenta unui spirit.

Fiecare culoare a lumanarilor are propriul simbolism. Iata ce semnifica culorile lumanarilor:

- Alb: adevar, puritate

- Rosu: dragoste, sanatate, sex, putere, vigoare

- Verde: bani, noroc, fertilitate

- Negru: vrasmasie, rau, negativitate, deruta

- Brun / maro : neutralitate, nesiguranta, ezitare

- Roz: dragoste, moralitate, onoare

- Portocaliu: atractie, stimulare

- Galben verzui: gelozie, manie, discordie

- Gri: neutralitate, negativitate, inertie

- Albastru deschis: liniste, rabdare, sanatate

- Albastru inchis: depresie, capriciu

Visul unei pisici albe vesteste o dragoste adevarata.

Daca o fata sau o femeie nemaritata vede doua lumanari in vis inseamna ca va fi in curand ceruta in casatorie.

Cinci lumanari aparute in vis prezic dragoste si casatorie.

Biblical Beauty Journey

Biblical Beauty Journey
"A BIBLICAL BEAUTY: DR. MEDINA PULLINGS"

There are two approaches to beauty. 1) Spiritual and 2) Natural (earthly). Each approach requires effort.

"PRINCIPLE: IT IS EASIER TO OBTAIN THAN IT IS TO MAINTAIN."

This principle is applicable to both approaches. BIBLICAL BEAUTY is a journey embarking upon the exploration of both.

My personal beauty maintenance program combines both via strategic prayer, fasting, beauty oils and herbs, cutting edge health and beauty products, proper nutrition, vitamins, facials, exercise and makeup techniques.

While there can be a predisposition to beauty, health, youth and vitality in varying degrees by virtue of good genes thanks to our Moms and Dads, God has blessed every single woman on the planet with a beauty secret. That secret is the glow that emanates from the anointing of God and the love of Jesus Christ supersedes any aspect of worldly beauty. The more time spent with God and His Word, the more evident the anointing.

With that in mind, let us embark upon the BIBLICAL BEAUTY journey and develop what God has imparted to us.

Daily Message March 7 2013

Daily Message March 7 2013
original artwork by: Kokoszkaa

"When things look as thought they are falling apart,"consider that they may be doing so"to make room for the right things to come together."

"- Jasmeine Moonsong"

Merry Meet and Good Morning :))) Blessings to you and yours for a magickal day today. Today is Thursday, March 7, 2013.

Thursdays are ruled by Jupiter, the planet that signifies expansion and growth. Thursdays are a very strong day to work on issues of expansion, money, prosperity and generosity. Luck is in your favor on this day. If you need to work spells for prosperity, money, luck, or business, today is the day. It's also a good day for spells that need to influence important people, laws or courts. If you are working with stones today choose to wear sapphire, cat's eye, or carnelian, for protection. Use tin for talismans.

Tonight's Moon is the Waning Moon, Fourth Quarter in Capricorn. The Waning Moon is a time for study, meditation, and little magickal work except magick designed to banish harmful energies. The Waning Moon represents the Goddess in her Crone aspect. It's a time to celebrate the wisdom gained through life. The Moon in Capricorn develops strong structure. It's a good time to set boundaries and rules. The Moon moves into Aquarius at 10:01 p.m. The Moon in Aquarius is a rebellious energy. It's time to break habits and make abrupt changes. Personal freedom and individuality is the focus. The magickal color of the day is Turquoise, and the incense of the day is Carnation. Have an amazingly magickal day!

Love and Blessings,

Jasmeine Moonsong

Wicca Tools Etc

Wicca Tools Etc
TOOLS ETC.

This was originally a post by Song Bird in the Herbalism echo. I thought it was interesting enough to cross-post it to some of the magical echos.

Note to all: I apologize for the exceedingly lengthy nature of this post. My thought was that unless you, dear reader, have been following the posts on this topic, an edited response would be really obscure. And thank you, Song Bird, for this post to which I am responding. Gave me pause for thought, for sure! Bless you!

SH> It is much easier for the student to concentrate on their true value if they already know that they can work the magic without the tools.

PW> I approve! Bravo! I tend to agree with the folks I know who insist that you're not much of a magician if you depend on something outside of yourself for your magic. Not that tools aren't useful! I tend to feel that learning energy movement through your own mind and body is the foremost important thing in beginning.

SB> Hallo. I'm aware that this conversation is mostly directed towards Wiccan workings (correct me if I'm wrong), but if I may I'd like to insert a though into it.
Wiccan, ceremonial magic and generic Neo-pagan, yes...

SB>Being that there are many forms of magic, and some of them religious, how do you respond when challenged that there are some forms of magic that are integral to ritual. Without the ritual and it's working tools of power, the end result of the magic is less well worked.

I suppose I would say that theoretically any magic that can be worked with ritual and/or tools can also be done without. The caveat with this is that most of us (self included) don't have the skills, knowledge and/or power to do without the ritual/tools for certain complicated powerful working, IMHO. Though perhaps if we worked without tools or ritual more often we'd get better at it... ;) Seriously, though, I'm not advocating dropping the tools or ritual - they're useful. And I think it's better to do what's useful than to work until you're ninety before you finally get good at it!

SB>Tools sometimes mean much more than just a focus, more than just a way to get to where you are going. Oft times the tools themselves are invested of the very life necessary to work the magic.

You're speaking here of tools which carry energy or intelligence, I assume? I was referring to tools which are made by the worker or by another worker for the purpose of someone else using them. In my understanding tools are more useful if they carry energy or intelligence. If they do, it's because the worker put it there.
I differentiate these from tools which acquire energy or intelligence through a process other than human intervention.

SB>Shamanistic paths use tools in this way, as an example of one. There is soul invested in the very wood and in the nature of the stones, and in the casting of the light, and in the movement of shadow, and in the rippling shudder of sing- song rhythm. Without these, with only a wo/man alone and reft of surroundings, how much are we depriving ourselves of?

It sounds to me like in that circumstance we are depriving ourselves of the opportunity to work with another intelligence. When you use the word "soul" I presume you mean "entity" as well, to which I attribute some level of intelligence.

SB>Any tradition that believes in the vesting of power down through the centuries, in the passing of knowledge, known or unknown, unto it's heirs, fits into your definition of the use of tools to enhance personal power.

Not tools. The vesting of power and passing of knowledge is through (as I comprehend it currently) the partnership of human and deity. As I see it, the process of initiation (which many workers use, including all of the shamanistic paths that I know anything about) does several things:

1) charters the individual with membership in the group with all the rights and responsibilities involved ther.
2) Passes power or knowledge from the initiator to the initiate (sometimes the power or knowledge is seen as coming from elsewhere, such as a deity).
3) Formally introduces the initiate to the energy and/or deities of the tradition.
4) Creates a new personality for the initiate which sometimes supplants the old one.

I'm sure there are points I've missed and not all initiations do all these things.

SB>What is this personal power you use? Certainly that power is from within, utilizing nothing from without, if you deny the use of tools.

Not necessarily or entirely; I don't consider the ambient power of the universe a
"tool" per se. I differentiate between energy and a tool.

SB>What, precisely, is a tool?

Good question! Does this fall into the same kind of discussion as "what is a witch", perhaps? :) IMHO a tool must be an object, either physical or an astral representation of a physical object. If it's not an object, if it's an entity, energy, intelligence, spirit, or whatever, it's not a tool, it's a partner (or servant in some circles).

SB>What, precisely, is personal power?

I think of personal power as the ability to exercise one's abilities. To whatever degree you have the energy, skill and knowledge to do so, you have personal power. This includes the energy, skill and knowledge to draw on power from outside your physical/ astral/whatever being.

SB>Are the gods a tool, or power, and can we cast without them?

The gods I deal with are real entities with minds, thoughts, feelings, histories and agendas of their own. They aren't psychological constructs, or sheer power, or tools. If by "cast" you mean what I mean by "work", I say yes.

SB>Is inherented knowledge passed through the centuries personal power, or a tool, and can we cast without it?

I think of power as energy, but perhaps the power passed by initiation is both information and energy (thus including knowledge). I conceive of the power of an inititiatory line (of whatever flavor) as a stream, a line of connection to which all members of that line, living and dead, connect. We can draw on the knowledge and energy of the line, or we can work without it. I don't think of it as exactly personal, as it belongs to everyone in the line.

SB>Are the spirits that surrounds us a part of us and a power to be used, or some separate entity and a tool to be cast aside?

Spirits are entities, as near as I can figure, and that makes them neither powers nor tools. There's a difference, for example, between drawing on the energy of the moon and making a connection with the spirit of the moon.

SB>At times, the definitions of tools and power become too intermixed to separate. Perhaps, we are nothing without our tools. Perhaps, there really are no tools. Perhaps, we are the tool. I challenge that what we are comes from without and that there is nothing that we do today or any other that will increase or refine our power one wit *unless* we reach outwards. What we become will pass to the generations. What has been is within and a tool as surely as any other.

I have real difficulty accepting that all I am comes from without. That makes me too much defined by that which surrounds me, and binds me to be what the outside (parents, friends, society) says I am. I don't believe I am a tool, even of my deities. I do agree that without input from that which surrounds us, we don't have any opportunity for growth and development. That is where connections are so important, and why it is so important for us to connect with that which nourishes us, rather than that which stunts or devours us. What we pass to the generations depends on the quality of our lives and works.

SB>And when an oak is dead or felled to earth
By one to whom a tree is but a tree,
Where is this treasury of loveliness?
I think it passes to another birth.
The rugged pine that overlooks the sea
May know the charm the desert palms confess.

Amplifying God The True Purpose Of The Body

Amplifying God The True Purpose Of The Body
There are those who believe they owe their existence to chance, that human beings are nothing more than the result of some freak evolutionary accident that took place in a bubbling primordial, electrochemical soup billions of years ago. And then there are those who
Some of these same scientists even swear allegiance to a controversial yet exciting model of physics that claims every cubic centimeter of empty space contains more wave energy than the total energy of all the matter in the known universe. That consciousness itself may be the ground of all being is also garnering some close attention from a wide circle of highly respected and intelligent scientists in all fields of the mind and physical sciences.

It has been proposed that just like a hologram, a complex, omnipresent network of sub-atomic sentient wave particles that behave as carriers of information bits like microprocessors in a giant supercomputer may be the source of everything in existence. Could this apparently conscious, universal energy presence be what some would call God? And if so, how might we, as one of nature's highest expressions of consciousness fit into the grand design?"

Many believe the pinnacle of true spiritual enlightenment is attained by observing that we are at one with the universe, and that there is no greater peace than living only in the now. Although this is certainly mind expanding and empowering, it's not the truth in totality. There is a deeper, more profound objective in the human experience that many spiritually aligned people fail to account for. As beings of consciousness, before we inhabit the "world", we first inhabit a "body". And it is through this mechanism alone that we experience being alive. But it might surprise you to learn that we do so for reasons other than the ones you might imagine.

In AMPLIFYING GOD: The True Purpose of The Body, luminary and motivational speaker Nelson Vanvickle gives us full disclosure on the real purpose of our existence. From the perspective that the human body is nothing more than a transceiver, a precisely tuned device capable of intercepting and manifesting the reality of an otherwise imperceptible energy presence, he suggests that by learning to fully inhabit our bodies as a separate presence, we establish a mind level connection with this universal consciousness and become able to distinguish suffering from experiencing, identity from being, and emotional distress from compassionate detachment.
