Image by mermay19 via FlickrIt is often said that nothing is wrong with talking to gods as long as they do not talk back. When gods talk back, one is likely psychotic. Of course, a great many people claim that gods speak to them. Some are undoubtedly suffering from serious mental illness, but the majority are either lying to manipulate others or deluding themselves in a way that would not result in a psychiatric diagnosis. This sort of self-delusion is not only socially acceptable but is sometimes met with incredible praise and admiration.
Take the case of Marija Lunetti in Shelby County, Alabama. A reader, BamaGal, sent me an article from the "Birmingham News" about Ms. Lunetti, and it is a great example of why someone might claim to converse with gods.
Over 2,000 people have traveled from all over the U.S. to rural Alabama simply because Ms. Lunetti claims to have daily visions of the Virgin Mary. According to the article, these "pilgrims" make the journey "hoping to feel the presence of the mother of Jesus."
One would think that rural Alabama would have plenty of folks who think they are in communication with spirits, but Ms. Lunetti came all the way from the former Yugoslavia to have her "visions" promoted.Marija Lunetti, whose reports of daily visions of the Virgin Mary have drawn millions of pilgrims to Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina, has spent the past week in Shelby County. She continues to have her daily visions, including Thursday and Friday at 10:30 p.m.How nice that her "visions" occur on a consistent schedule. Why, one could probably sell tickets!Although the pilgrims can't see the apparitions, they believe the Virgin Mary appears and speaks to Lunetti.Of course they do.

I have commented before on one of the most annoying broadcasts from National Public Radio: Krista Tippett's "Speaking of Faith." Tippett is by far not the most egregious offender to rationality I can think of, and she really tries to be as open minded as possible (though remember Carl Sagan's warning that being too open minded carries the risk of your brain falling out...). Still, perhaps because the show airs on my local NPR station on Saturday mornings and it is the first thing I hear when waking up during the weekend, I tend to be quite annoyed by it.
For instance, the January 29 show featured author Mary Doria Russell on the topic of "The Novelist as God." Hmm, the link between being an author and being a god seems pretty tenuous (besides the obvious large ego involved), but proceed, please. According to the introductory notes by Tippett: "Our guest has grappled with large moral and religious questions on and off the page. We discover what she discerned - in the act of creating a new universe - about God and about dilemmas of evil, doubt, and free will. The ultimate moral of any life and any event, she believes, only shows itself across generations. And so the novelist, like God, she says, paints with the brush of time." Whatever. What really caught my attention is Russell's invocation of cosmology and her twisting it to generate a superficially attractive but in fact entirely nonsensical metaphor regarding god.
Russell said that cosmologists think that the universe is expanding, but that eventually it will contract again, leading to an infinite cycle of expansion and contraction. This is actually not the case. The idea of the "big bang-big crunch" cycle was briefly entertained by theoretical physicists like Stephen Hawking, but abandoned now that it seems clear that the universe's expansion is actually accelerating.
But what annoyed me is not that Ms. Russell's cosmology is out of date. After all, she is a novelist, not a cosmologist (though if you are going to talk about science on a nationally broadcasted radio show you might want to make the effort of getting the basic facts straight). It's what she made of this alleged alternation of expansions and contractions that made me unfavorably contemplate all those who attempt to exploit the prestige of science to propagate their own metaphysical non sequiturs. You see, for Russell this cosmic cycle is nothing less than "God's breathing"! What on earth could that possibly mean? Surely she doesn't want to imply that god is an animal-like entity who actually breaths as part of its daily physiological functions. Besides, what would god breath, cosmic dust? And in and out of what, parallel universes?
Ok, I know, she meant this whole thing poetically and metaphorically. Right, but this is a metaphor for what, exactly? Metaphors are supposed to provide us with insight into complex matters. What sort of insight can one derive from thinking of the (false, as it turns out) expanding and contracting cycles of the universe as "God's breath"? As for poetry, again, the best poetry isn't made of the gratuitous juxtaposition of imagery, it is meant to let us appreciate beauty and construct meaning in life. I guess I fail to see the beauty of the idea of god's breathing, and I certainly am not able to derive any meaning from that thought.
I'm sure Ms. Russell was a good paleoanthropologist before retiring, and is now an excellent novelist (including "The Sparrow" and "Children of God"). However, all I got last Saturday morning from listening to her and Krista chatting in my ear before breakfast was irritating fluff. Fortunately, the sound of my espresso machine soon drowned out the nonsense and I resumed my familiar quest of making sense of life rationally while enjoying what it has to offer, beginning with a nice cup of hot cappuccino.

You CANNOT fix the mistakes you made in the past, frankly because you do NOT know how, BUT God does. It is NOT too late to seek Him to fix your situation. You do NOT have to be trapped where you are. Where the world thinks you should be.
Anything is posible in the spirit. Meaning, if you broke in the natural, God FROM the spirit can make you rich. If you hungry in the natural, FROM the spirit He can make you full. If you jobless in the natural, FROM the spirit He can make you employed. If you are lacking in the natural, FROM the spirit He can give you overflow. If you sick, FROM the spirit He can heal you.
God is a LIVING God. He is NOT some statue that sits by idly like

I began my path on Paganism when I was 15 and that journey has been defined by QUESTIONS.
At 15 I was introduced to WICCA by a new friend, he also introduced me to a store in my local flea market. That second was the greatest thing because the flea market had an arcade adjacent to it, which gave a great alibi. I spent hours in that store and learned a lot from open discussions.
By the time I was 18 I had found a group joined and obtained my 1st degree. But I still had questions and Wicca or just Eclectic didn't feel right.
At around 20 I discovered ASATRU from a different friend and began reading on that. At first it seemed right but felt a little odd. After meeting with actual groups though I felt at home and became very active. I changed my self identification to HEATHEN. Years went past, I helped form a local discussion group, started a Kindred with others, was a member and officer of The Troth (for a year). At 25 though I started having questions about the nature of deity as my life went topsy turvy.
I began to think maybe I wasn't Pagan or Heathen but an ATHEIST.
This self identified label lasted the shortest. Not because of a sudden reintroduction with deity but because no matter what I feel at home in the Pagan and Heathen communities. "If you don't remember from my "Birthday Post," I'm 30 now. "In the past year since I've really begun to create Treegold & Beegold I've thought a lot and asked myself a lot of questions.
I Started To Define My Own Views:
* I believe in the strength and importance of community
* I believe in celebrating the seasons and the Earth
* I believe in the importance of traditions (even if self created)
* I believe in honoring our ancestors and the past
I came to learn 6 months back there is a new found community getting a lot of press this past week called Humanistic or Naturalistic Pagans. I prefer the Humanistic title myself over Naturalistic. For the sake of being able to tell someone a sense of my views easily it's my current self identified label.
The Questions haven't ended though. At times I do something or think about certain deities and that spine tingle comes back to me. I had in the past denounced divination for anything supernatural but in a time of pain I turned back to my Runes.
Maybe I'm taking a spiritual hiatus.
I will never stop questioning and I will evolve as I continue too. I'm a trained Scientist and my mind functions on the principle of the Scientific Method.

I know that new questions are just around the corner, I can feel the shift in my life right now. I wonder what they will be?

Saint Paul the Simple of Egypt also lived in the fourth century and was called the Simple for his simplicity of heart and gentleness. He had been married, but when he discovered his wife's infidelity, he left her and went into the desert to St Anthony the Great (January 17). Paul was already 60 years old, and at first St Anthony would not accept Paul, saying that he was unfit for the harshness of the hermit's life. Paul stood outside the cell of the ascetic for three days, saying that he would sooner die than go from there. Then St Anthony took Paul into his cell, and tested his endurance and humility by hard work, severe fasting, with nightly vigils, constant singing of Psalms and prostrations. Finally, St Anthony decided to settle Paul into a separate cell.
During the many years of ascetic exploits the Lord granted St Paul both discernment, and the power to cast out demons. When they brought a possessed youth to St Anthony, he guided the afflicted one to St Paul saying, "I cannot help the boy, for I have not received power over the Prince of the demons. Paul the Simple, however, does have this gift." St Paul expelled the demon by his simplicity and humility.
After living for many years, performing numerous miracles, he departed to the Lord. He is mentioned by St John, the Abbot of Sinai (Ladder 24:30): "The thrice-blessed Paul the Simple was a clear example for us, for he was the rule and type of blessed simplicity..."
St Paul is also commemorated on October 4.

"QUESTION: Over the last several decades societies which in the past considered themselves to be Christian are falling victim to the flood of different pseudo-religious cults (represented in numerous Yoga and meditation systems, UFO hysteria, neopagan sects, etc.), all of them under the umbrella of the so-called New Age Movement. What do you think is the reason for the popularity of these movements and how the Orthodox Church should act in the presence of the above-mentioned New Age "spirituality"?"
ANSWER: The reason for the spread of various pseudo-religious heresies, the so-called religious or neopagan sects, which many members of the Church fall victims to, is that a lot of people have separated from the neptic tradition of our Church. As it is known, the neptic/hesychastic tradition of the Church, which constitutes the prophetic, apostolic and martyric spirit of the ancient Church, is the criterion by which it can be discerned whether some action comes from God or from the devil.
Saint Gregory of Nyssa teaches that heresies flourish where prophets are absent. This is so because prophets and apostles know how to distinguish falsehood from truth.
In addition, in our days, people, and mostly the young ones, do not find comfort in conventional manners, in an externally moralistic life. Instead, they search for answers to existential questions, they look for inner peace and existential freedom.
Therefore, what is needed above anything else in our times is the hesychastic tradition, which forms the basis of the Gospel, the context of the Holy Eucharist, the essence of the apostolic and patristic message. This spirit is found abundant in the "Philokalia" and the "Sayings of the Elders" ("Gerontikon"). When these texts are read within the canonical structure of the Orthodox Church, they help us avoid fallacy and everything associated with it.

Awakening the Dragon-Book One of the Dragon Clan Trilogy(9780979840609) is a story of magic, suspense and karmic justice combine in a tale of horror. Rachael moves to Coyote Springs to find a home and open her But first she needed to insure the safety of her children and herself. She closed the door. Walking to the Eastern corner of the room, she raised her hands. "This room represents the entire house, the entire property. The powers of the East-beings of light, air, rain, thunder, lightening, wind. I ask you to attend to witness and protect my circle." Her hands came together in front of her forehead. She lowered them to her heart level. Moving to the Southern corner, she again lifted her arms. "The powers of the South-beings of fire, heat, the sun, the heavens above which shelters and protect us, keeping us warm and growing our food. I ask you to attend to witness and protect my circle." Her hands came together and she lowered them to her heart. She moved to the Western corner and raised her hands. "Powers of the West-thou who provides our water, our fish, the cleansing element of our bodies and our souls, you satisfy our thirst and calm our souls. I ask you to attend my circle to witness and protect." Her skin began to tingle with the energy she brought into the room.
The temperature dropped, them warmed as the electrical and gravitational levels fluctuated. Rachael walked to the Northern corner and raised her arms. "The beings of the North, I ask you to attend to witness and protect my circle. Like the Earth Mother be the grounding force that provides protection and comfort. You who gives us our homes, our food, and the love we all need to survive." Bringing her hands down, she turned and walked to the center of the room. "I have asked you here to witness my new home. I call it mine for me and my children-Tara, Merlin, and Ralph. We alone are residents here. All others are visitors. To be protected, yet we alone call this place home. From above and below and from all four directions, I encircle this house-my home, my yard, my car, myself and my children in the silver and golden healing lights so that we may be safe, secure and know we are well loved. I authorize whatever force necessary to protect the residents of this home, starting at first with minimal to deadly if necessary. I ask all deities present to insure the safety of me and mine."
The air charged. Heat radiated off the walls, like the hot waves off black top. The energy circulated from within and around her expanding to fill the room. She continued without knowing why. "I combine my energy and tradition with all those of light who have gone before. May we be joined, making each stronger exponentially. Where there was one, may there be two. Where there is two may there be the power and wisdom of four. Where there be four, may the power of sixteen do what must be done. And so it goes until all the beings of light work together as the whole." Through her mind's eye, she saw the energy in the room expand, filling the room, spilling out to fill the house and yard to the borders of the property. A column of light shot both upward, as a beacon, and downward, connecting them to the source. "Thank you for your blessings."
Up from the ground, another energy surged. For a moment, Rachael was frightened. It withdrew, returning more softly. It filled her heart with love. She saw an older woman. She was from the dream. Smiling, she walked to Rachael and placed a ring of iridescent flowers around her neck. She spread her arms wide. Bubbles of the same shiny energy floated down from the heavens, filling the house and the yard, building a solid fence around the property.
Rachael knew the bubbles pile high and energized the ground beneath them. She breathed it in and it filled her being with love and strength. The woman stepped away, fading into the energy around them. She opened her eyes. Knowing she had been blessed by the Earth Mother, herself; she bowed her head in gratitude. "Thank you, Mother."
You're welcome, daughter, whispered the wind. Call you new protectors. Spirits of the centuries of times long past, yet still now live on, I call you to be special protectors of this guardian and those she loves. Eyes that see all of the night I charge your claws and fangs to defend with all that is necessary to keep evil at bay.
Rachael heard them before her she saw them in her mind's eye. Large and aware, she could see them manifest in the trees, shrubs and shadows around the cottage. Multi-shades of gold and green, their luminescent eyes rivaling the sunlight.
A single tiger leaped and landed before the woman. She reached out and stroked its head. He purred. Pointing to Rachael, she continued. "She is the guardian of this holy place." She pointed at the suddenly quiet carrier. "These are her children. Let no harm come to them. Both day and night watch and defend. As it was before, you and the others have free reign. Do not wait for her to call. As you sense so shall you react."
The golden eyes fixated on Rachael, sending shivers through her. Sensed his powerful spirit gently embracing her, getting to know her. He turned his head toward the carrier for a moment; then he vanished.
"As you are the guardian of this place, so they are to you. No harm shall come to you. Whether here or out in the world, one will always be close. Take care how you direct them." As in the field, she reached out and cupped Rachael's chin in her palm. "You have the strength, wisdom, and the honor for the tasks at hand. Do not doubt yourself." Smiling, she tweaked the end of Rachael's nose. "Now call the Mother Dragon. So we can continue."
Rachael took a deep breath and tried to remember the correct wording.
"Speak from you heart and she will hear."
"Mother of all the clans. The source of all our wisdom and strength I ask you to come to this my new home and bless it with your protection. It has been a source of love and wisdom, but now it is under attack by ignorance and bigotry. I ask you to bless it in such away that all the clans watch over and protect us. Let this beautiful place of light and love shine as a beacon for those who need comfort."
Suddenly the room glowed with incandescent silver light that came from everywhere, yet nowhere. It filled the room. Again, Rachael knew it went far beyond to radiate though the cottage and out into the yard. The hair on her arms stood on end as the room charged with the energy of the Mother Dragon. Only once before did she feel as close to the Mother Dragon-when she dedicated herself to the dragon clan. Only this time it was stronger, deeper reaching. She felt it lift her spirit above the cottage until she could see and feel it all. Carmen was not far down the road and should arrive in minutes. Norman and Meredith argued about the living arrangements in the kitchen. The children watched from the living room. Lisa looked up at her and smiled. Beside her and all around, she felt the infinite love of the Mother.
Child, your awakening is at hand. The Mother's whispered to her. Soon you will know what it truly meant to walk the path of the dragon.
Rachael smiled within herself, knowing without consciously knowing what the statement meant. It was the unconditional love she responded to as if she was a young child being given the courage to start something new.
"As our energies intertwine so we meet together in the spirit of the new guardian. We become part of her as she becomes one with us." The woman unfurled her arms shoulder high; her palms facing outward. "Let the ripples of our actions let it be known, the new guardian has been chosen." Slowly she lowered her arms. "Be blessed Child of Light. Welcome home." Suddenly she vanished.
Buy this book! I found myself smiling when I finished the last page of Awakening The Dragon-Book One of the Dragon Clan Trilogy (formally Dragon's New Home), by Theresa Chaze. I've read a pretty good number of However, the members of the House of Christ church had different ideas. The cottage was evil, the home of a witch, and all good Christians know that witches are evil beings, consorts of the Devil; their houses are evil and should be destroyed.
But, the cottage's owner, Kevin Mitchellson would not allow that. He forbids any member of the church to set foot on the property left to him by his grandmother, Sarah, and the conflict rages, as Wicca and Christians team up, prepared to do battle with the bigotry and ignorance of the House of Christ fanatics.
Therese Chaze draws her readers in from the first page and refuses to release them until the last word of this fantastic tale of witches, magic, love and betrayal.
Set in the village of Coyote Springs, Dragon Domain is a book of lessons; lessons on love, forgiveness, and above all truth to oneself.
In the grand traditions of Anne McCaffrey and Marion Zimmer Bradley, Therese Chaze captures the imagination as well as the heart of her readers.
Dragon Domain is an open door to a world of wonder, and from the first page to the last, you will be hard pressed to put it down.
Linda RuckerTheresa Chaze has been described as the woman who plays with dragons, especially the dragons of the mind. She leads her readers to magical realms and others worlds. Her work is based on her philosophy that all peoples can live together in peace as long as we come from respect, not only for ourselves but those who follow different paths or beliefs. Her work has been compared to Marion Zimmer Bradley and Anne McCaffrey with an adult version of Harry Potter mixed in.

Two years earlier, in 1945, an earthenware jar was dug up in a cave west of the Nile near the village of Nag Hammadi. Contained in this jar were papyrus scrolls or codices wrapped in leather of Biblical texts dating back to around 400 AD. They appeared to be the only surviving fragments of a much larger body of work; the equivalent perhaps of finding a mere handful of pages left from a lost 'Encyclopedia Britannica'. Yet it appears these texts were secretly hidden in a last ditch effort to keep them safe and preserved from a deliberate and systematic campaign to destroy the vital information they contained.
Translation of the 'Nag Hammadi' Scrolls reveals a body of early Christian teachings that are considered 'Gnostic' in character. In other words, these texts contained 'Gospels' that had escaped censorship or revision by the Church of Rome, and that repudiated the authority of orthodox Christian doctrine-posing a theological threat, which clearly provided a motive to keep them hidden.
Gnostic (from the Greek gnosis, meaning 'knowledge') thought insisted upon direct and personal, first-hand religious or mystical experience with Deity, and vehemently rejected dogmas, creeds and clerics or any superfluous intercessors between man and God-an unwelcome posture for Vatican authority.
Yet contained within these lost texts is an exotic description of the origins of Earth and the human species that serious religious and Gnostic scholars dismiss as mythological 'science -fiction'-a fantastic and disturbing description of cosmology that reveals an intrusion upon Earth humanity by malevolent, parasitic extraterrestrial invaders, who use Earth humans as puppets in a vast, unseen game of deception and domination.
"As above, so below." The Gnostic perception of the universe would tell us that just as a biologist sees minute living creatures swarming in a drop of water through a microscope, the swirling galaxies seen through an astronomer's telescope are also living beings! The entire universe is a vast living consciousness with individualized nodes of living consciousness existing within it.
In the most simplistic terms, the Gnostic cosmology describes the central sun of our particular galaxy as a living entity-intelligent light plasma. The 'arms' that extend and swirl out from that central sun are like 'children' of that core awareness. These plasma extensions reach out to the periphery of the galaxy where solid matter is formed, and this is where the 'play' of material creation is acted out. These conscious extensions stretch out and form solid worlds and living beings in infinite variety to express their own individual 'dream' of creativity.

Planet Earth first originated as a 'metamorphosis' of an intelligent stream of light plasma extending from the central sun. That stream of light was "SOPHIA"-a feminine emanation. Impulsive Sophia was so enraptured by her dream of creation that she plunged into the realm of physical matter alone, without her balancing male consort. In doing so, an accidental aberration occurred. Within Sophia's dream of creation was an ideal 'intention' for living, intelligent creatures that would become humans. For that intention to properly manifest, it needed to blend with organic matter. However, in her brash impulsive plunge, the sheer force of plasma outpouring impacted with inorganic matter, creating an aberrant species that could never properly manifest Sophia's vision for the human species!
The original intention of Sophia's dream did successfully blend with organic matter and proper humans came into being, yet they were now challenged to confrontation by their aberrant cousins who use subterfuge to divert humans from their true potential on planet Earth. And Sophia, not only formed Earth from her dream-she actually became Earth! Gnostic texts tell us that goddess Sophia literally morphed into the living planet herself. Earth is Sophia. In other words, Earth is the living mother of all humanity.

The subsequent unfolding of human history is the conflict drama between Sophia's intention for human expression and its accidental, mirror competitors. Only when humans ultimately discover this vital truth and overcome their adversary will they achieve Sophia's divine dream for their destiny.

Referred to as "Archons", (pronounced; Ar-kon, Greek, meaning magistrate, or-the Authorities.) they come in two distinct types-an aggressive reptilian humanoid and smaller, passive creatures resembling a 'prematurely formed fetus'! "Bizarre as it may seem, a solution to the most baffling enigma of our time was fully elucidated in sacred writings almost two thousand years ago. In the matter of the ET/UFO enigma, the Gnostics were ahead of everyone today. Way ahead."

And, Gnostics tell us, that through the human mind, the Archons were able to impose their most cunning deception-religion. By manipulation of religious ideology, the Archons are able to covertly substitute their mind-set into human culture.

Surely it is becoming more obvious that something undefined-just beyond our perceptual grasp-is working 'against' humanity and even the planet itself. Primitive, petty, Bronze-age disputes in remote antiquity fought with swords and spears over religious rivalries and territorial claims seem quaint and provincial, from our New Millennium point of view. But for these same conflicts to rage on mindlessly for four-thousand years, now fought with today's high-tech, mass-destruction weapons, suggests a profound pathological disorder in the human psyche that must be identified and treated before this malignancy engulfs our species altogether.
Gnostics would argue that, over the centuries, the proliferation of rival religions, political structures as well as modern corporate structures are each nothing more than microcosms of the Archon's original social control construct for human domination. These structures mimic the Archon mind.
According to Gnostic theory, the Archon's major initiating intrusion into the human realm is documented in the Old Testament book of Genesis, with the appearance of Jehovah to the patriarch, Abraham.
"In the Gnostic perspective the Archons are not only mind parasites-delusional nodes in the human mind, considered quasi-autonomous psychic entities, if you will-they are cosmic imposters, parasites who pose as gods. But they lack the primary divine factor of...'intentionality, creative will.' And rather than responsible stewardship of our planet's well being and natural resources, in keeping with humanity's opportunity to co-evolve with Sophia, modern political and corporate hierarchies see the planet as a lifeless rock to be plundered, tortured and exploited for greed and profit.

Knowledge of a sentient, living earth has been maintained and revered by indigenous peoples around the planet: from Australia's Aboriginals, to the native peoples of both North and South America, as well as the tribes of Africa. Yet over the centuries, the expansion and conquest of Christian European nations have systematically exterminated and marginalized these cultures, deliberately and effectively silencing their awareness of the Goddess reality, and the unseen menace of the Archon dominion.

In a sense, the Archons are present in the cosmos to test us so that we are certain to make optimal use of our divine endowment. In the Gnostic texts even Sophia herself warns the evil Archon Demiurge, he will ultimately be defeated by the humanity she created. It is our destiny...!

Lithia is also known as the summer solstice, Midsummer, All Couples Day, and Saint John's Day. Litha is one of the fire festivals and occurs on the longest day of the year. This is the time of year when the sun reaches its highest apex, at the Tropic of Cancer. It is the day when light overcomes darkness, a day of power. Litha also is one of the "quarter days" or the Lesser Sabbats.
Litha, as a Wiccan holiday, has the Sun/God reaching full power, and the Goddess pregnant with child. She holds promise of the bounty of the harvest yet to come. Litha's name, depending which author you read, has its roots in Greco-Roman, (McCoy, page 149) or according to Our Lady of the Prairie Coven, Litha means opposite of Yule. This may possibly have Saxon roots, though that is pure speculation. No others authors that were researched for this article offered any explanation as to the origins of Litha other than it is name for Midsummer.
Midsummer traditionally marks the beginning of summer (i.e. schools out). Actually midsummer marks the actual middle of the Celtic summer, falling between Beltane and Lugnasadh. Midsummer is known also as a night of magic, made famous by William Shakespeare with his play Midsummer's Nights Dream. As a Quote from Puck can attest to:
Captain of our fairy band,
Helena is here at hand;
And the youth, mistook by me,
Pleading for a lover's fee.
Shall we their fond pageant see?
Lord, what fools these mortals be!

June in Europe and America is historically the busiest month for weddings, hence All Couples Day. This tradition begins because this time of the year was a time of rest for the Ancient Celts, the time between planting and harvesting. June allowed time for the wedding festivals and rest. This is best described in an English child's nursery rhyme.

Saint John's Day celebrates the birth of St. John exactly six months before the birth of Christ as he foretold of Christ's coming. The Celts, as was their way, easily adopted this day and incorporated into their summer solstice festivities just as they did with Beltane/May Day. A poem demonstrates how the Celts and other cultures were able to incorporate the various pagan meanings of Litha with a Christian one.

Litha's celebrations are as varied as the authors who write them are. The times that the ritual should take place are also varied. McCoy suggests that the ritual take place on the eve before June 21. (Pages 163-66) McCoy further states that during the ritual one should jump over or walk in between two purifying fires. (Pages 153-54) Author of Celestially Auspicious Occasions: Seasons, Cycles and Celebrations, Donna Henes, says that Midsummer is a sun festival and is best done during the daylight hours between sunrise and high noon. (Page 56)
Litha rituals as all ritual should be personal. Several of the authors give basic outlines some for covens, some for the solitary. Most of the authors used for this essay are Wiccan. This particular point of view uses a very pregnant Lady and a Lord at the height of his powers. This ritual, no matter what the tradition or the Gods/Goddesses involved should include either the sun or a fire, or both.
"FOODS"
Litha's foods vary, depending upon the author and tradition you adhere to. Cunningham suggests fruits, Buckland, cakes and ale, and Starhawk, bread and drink. However, given that this is a day to celebrate the sun, foods should be of yellow (gold), orange or reds.
BAKED TOMATOES"
Serves 6-8
3 whole fresh tomatoes
1, 12-oz bag of shredded cheddar cheese
Fresh parsley
Pre-heat the oven to 350 F. Slice the tomato 1/2-inch thick, place on tin foil. Liberal spread cheddar cheese on the tomatoes. Baked for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle parsley over tomatoes.
"SUMMER SQUASH"
Serves 6-8
1 summer squash
1/4 cup of butter
Black pepper
Need one medium size sauce pan, set flame to medium. Place butter in pan. Slice squash approximately 1/8-inch thick, layer into pan, sprinkling pepper to taste on each layer. Stirring occasionally, cook to taste. Takes 20-30 minutes.
"MOM MCCOY'S LEMON CHEES PIE"(Makes one nine inch pie)
1 unbaked pie shell
2 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon corn meal
4 eggs
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/2 cup real lemon juice
1/4 cup grated lemon peal
Preheat oven to 375 F. Place unbaked pie shell in a deep-dish pie pan. Mix the sugar, flour, cornstarch and cornmeal, then add eggs, milk, butter, lemon juice, and lemon peel. Beat until smooth. Pour mixture into the pie shell and bake for about 40 minutes or until top is golden brown.
"ZUCCHINI CASSEROLE"
(Serves 6-8)
5 zucchini
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup sour cream
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
2 cups mozzarella cheese, grated
1 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon ground oregano
3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground rosemary
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup fresh mushrooms
1 small chopped tomato
1/2-cup bacon bits
2 cups prepared croutons
1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese, grated
Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Place the mixture in a lightly greased 9 X 13 baking pan and bake for 30 minutes.

Morality behind the Truth spells

Is it justified to make someone speak the truth ?
Are the reasons behind someones silencing righteous ?
Do we bend someones Free will when we cast Truth spell upon them ?
All of the above can be answered with both yes and no. It is generally considered in occult that compelling someone to tell the truth is black, or at very least gray magick as it effects free will.
But let me ask You this, If a person is testifying falsely to make an innocent go to jail, is the Truth spell justified to use on this occasion ? If someone pretends to be Your friend, just so they can be close to You and harm You, and You suspect this and would like it checked ? If someone is badmouthing You and speaking lies about You, perhaps before You stab pins to beef tongue ( silencing spell ), You can consider making them tell the truth, that they lied due to their envy and wish to harm You ?

Magick can not always be classified in black and white category, and often it is the Practitioner's intent that gives it a "color"
So If someone tells You how Truth magick is evil, don't You listen to their silly speeches born in blind conviction and narrowness of mind, but question Your intents and needs rather. Make sure they are valid.
Nevertheless, despite the ever continuing discussion on morality and ethics of such spells, they are very useful l and good to know. They are also a lacking category, which is largely underestimated in occult :/ and it should not be. Truth spells always lack, so I have collected and written some and I will post them here for You to learn about and use

Tell the Truth oil

All over the Internet is a formula for Truth oil, apparently from Herman Slater and I must say, it is a good perfume but that is really it. Other than Clary sage, other ingredients don't really have use in truth magick, or in magick at all ( marigold leafs oil :S ) and calamus that is indeed a compelling herb. Lavender has no place in this formula, and pine is spiritual cleanser.
Now here is a recipe I would use and I shall explain the choice of ingredients
The formula combines Europeans and Hoodoo herbology, but can still be used as condition oil in my humble opinion
Here we go :
- few bluebell flowers ( whole herb,it can lack roots though ),
- Teaspoon of Clary sage or 12 drops of essential oil
- licorice chips in a pinch
- sweetflag in a pinch
- Sandalwood oil 7 drops ( optional )
Bluebell flowers are said to compel one who beares themm to tell the truth in all matters in European folk herbology. Clary sage is a typical magick herb associated with truth, regardless on form or method used. Licorice and Sweetflag are compelling agents here, to compel person to tell the truth. Sandalwood oil makes agreat addition in any oil that has some spiritual work oriented purpose.
So there You go, a decent formula so You can not say, where can we get Truth oil :)

Days and hours or Mercury are favorable for such a work, or Saturn days if the spells are bit more oriented on forcing someone to be honest and speak the Truth.
Symbols and sigils can be individual or one can use runes, such as Daggaz which is according to many some authors rune of truth, among rest of it's uses.
Than we have the shinjitsu symbolism, or even Druidic AWEN symbol ( shown on picture ) that represents inspiration, truth and poetry.
Now here are some spells :
Compelling to tell the truth

Get a purple or orange candle, If figural even better. Carve the name of the party/subject on it and dress it with the Truth oil or Essence of Bend Over.
Now chant:
For Conjurers :
Place the candle on the Bible and read Psalm43 and afterwards say :
As Mosses compelled the Sea,
As Lord Christ conquered the Fiend
As King Solomon ordered the Spirits
I compel, conquer and order You tell the truth !
For Witches :
Place the Candle on some sort of Truth sigil ( like rune ) and saY:
Truth must be heard from thy mouth
Either by whisper or by shout
Open thy lips of venom v wide
Power of this charm must ye abide
Honest, true words so eagerly concealed
Tongue unbind and be revealed !

The truth spell/charm
Prepare the following under a light of Purple and white candles, preferably on the night of the Full Moon or in Middy on a clear sky day.
Day and hour of Mercury are also very favorable for such a spell.
This should be prepared under purple and white candle. On a piece of parchment draw runes Laguz, Ansuz and Dagaz, preferably as bindrune. Take a whole ( root can lack )
Bluebell flower and place it on the paper with bindrune. Fold the paper so that the flower remains inside the folded paper ( it is good to use dried and pressed flower for this ). Alternatively You could place bindrune and herbs in small sachet.
Along with bindrune or instead of it You could use Druidic symbol AWEN symbol of truth and inspiration.
Now place this between two candles and chant:
I need thee truth speaking
Only true words of sincerity
As soon upon this charm taking
Compelled will be to the honesty !
Dress it with few vine drops, and let it dry, blow the candles out. Now implant this somewhere where subject will take it, and carry it, unwillingly is fine. You could slip it into their pocket, or into their documents. Once they take it,or when You are sure they took it, and You are near enough to see them, whisper : Veritas dica !
The approach them and ask them what You want to know. They will be compelled to tell the truth.
