Back To Basics Ten Questions

Back To Basics Ten Questions To Create Your Domestic Goals
I have to admit that planning this domestic paganism series has been a challenge. Why? Because each individual path can be so incredibly different. We learned in the last post that domestic paganism is a bit of an umbrella term. It really includes several different traditions of Paganism, Wicca, and Witchcraft. Even if you follow the same tradition as someone else, your life circumstances, spiritual paths, and your magickal strengths are going to be different.

For example, I am a single mother of four children all school age. (Actually, I have five living in my home but that's a story for another time.) The role I have in my home is going to be different than that of a married couple who just had their first baby.

As a Pagan, I follow Goddess-based spirituality mixed with witchcraft, ceremonial magick, dark magick, and Eastern philosophy. My spiritual practice is going to different than a domestic witch who follows Gardernian Wicca. His spiritual practice is going to be different than a Celtic Pagan who is also influenced by shamanism.

We all will differ even further when it comes to our magickal practice. Some don't practice magick at all. A Gardnerian Witch would approach a disturbance in the home far different than a Shamanic Celtic Pagan. Their spiritual beliefs, rituals, and techniques of magick will vary greatly even though they have the exact same goal.

You also have to take into consideration what your magickal strengths and weaknesses are. For example, I have never been able to keep a plant alive so growing an herb garden isn't a realistic goal for me. Even if I could keep a plant alive, doing small indoor containers is an issue for me because I have two dogs and several cats that would probably destroy my efforts. However, I do have strengths using candle magick and aromatherapy. So it's no surprise that there are scented candles throughout my house. I also have always enjoyed reading tarot cards and I know if I took a minute to draw a card every morning I might be better prepared for what the day will bring.

You Are Always Pagan Enough

While it may seem odd to say this, I don't want this series to be about me telling you what you "must" do to be a domestic pagan. Let me explain. There's nothing I hate more than My goal is to help you to decide what your needs are, what your goals are, and give you suggestions on how you can achieve them. This series is about DOING! This is the reason I am going to be doing the things I blog about in this series. Magick is about doing! I think one of the biggest mistakes most of us make is we collect enough info to fill a Book of Shadows (maybe even several) but how much do we actually DO?

And let's face it! As CEOs of our households, if we don't DO what needs done, our entire home, family, and schedule turns into complete and utter chaos. Our entire domestic life is about DOING! Even though it is about doing, running a household takes planning. It means making choices that address your own houehold's wants and needs. The best way to do this is by setting goals.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?

I'm going to start this series by giving you ten questions for you to answer. If you can answer these questions with your significant other and kids, even better! I will answer them myself as well in a follow up post. This one is already a bit long. Feel free to share your answers in the comments.

1. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN YOUR FAMILY OR HOME THAT IS GOING WELL? List all the positive things that you can think of, no matter how little or small. Have you had any major accomplishments both personally or as a family? What are you proud of?

2. WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR FAMILY OR HOME THAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT?

Again list everything you can think of no matter how big or small. Are the kids misbehaving? Is your romantic married life in a slump? Do you wish you had more time to do family activities?

3. WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL FAMILY AND HOME SITUATION?

Write whatever comes to mind, even if it seems outrageous or silly. Do you wish you had a mansion? Do you wish your husband was more romantic? Do you wish you had a nanny and a maid?

4. TAKE THAT IDEAL SITUATION AND BREAK IT DOWN INTO GOALS. For example, if you said your ideal situation is to have a maid, but you can't actually afford it then your goal might be to adjust your budget so you can or maybe just have your spouse or kids help out around the house. If your ideal home is a million dollar mansion, but you live in a studio apartment, your goal might be to make your apartment feel more luxurious. Would having new bedding or adding a some decor help you achieve that? Sometimes even though are goals are lofty, we have to start small.

5. WHAT MUNDANE EFFORTS ARE YOU MAKING OR DO YOU PLAN TO MAKE TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS? While I have no problem with someone using magick to help them achieve their goals we simply aren't Samantha from Bewitched. We can't just wiggle our nose and instantly clean our house. Running a household and taking care of a family involves doing a lot of mundane activities.

*NOTE* HERE'S WHERE OUR PATHS DIVERGE. There are generally three groups of Witches, Wiccans, and Pagans. Those that do magick and spirituality. Those that just do spirituality. And those that just do magick. Decide where you fit and answer the questions that are specific to your personal path.

6. WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE MAKES DOMESTIC ACTIVITY SPIRITUAL? Why is cleaning your house a spiritual activity? What does cooking dinner for your family do for them spiritually? What is the spiritual dimension to the role you have in your household?

7. WHAT ARE YOU DOING THAT MAKES YOUR EVERYDAY DOMESTIC ACTIVITY SPIRITUAL? Like before I want you to list all the postive things you are already doing.

8. WHAT COULD YOU BE DOING TO MAKE YOUR EVERYDAY DOMESTIC ACTIVITY MORE SPIRITUAL? Would you like to start saying a prayer to God/dess at mealtimes? Maybe you want to begin teaching your children about your spiritual path. Perhaps you want to learn how to enjoy doing housework. Maybe you want to adopt a simple living lifestyle. It's okay if you don't know the answer to this now. You may simply want to learn how to be more spiritual in your daily life.

9. USING THE ANSWERS TO THE THREE PREVIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT SPIRITUALITY, MAKE A LIST OF YOUR SPIRITUAL GOALS REGARDING YOUR DOMESTIC ACTIVITY. Like before, if you have lofty goals you are probably going to need to start small. For example, if you want to create a meditation room but don't have an extra room available, you may need to start with a meditation pillow in the corner of your bedroom.

10. FOR THOSE THAT PRACTICE MAGICK, WHAT CAN YOU DO MAGICKALLY TO ACHIEVE THE DOMESTIC GOALS YOU HAVE CHOSEN? You might not know the answer to this right now. You may need to do some research. For example, my children tend to fight a lot. What can I do to promote peace in my home? My first thought is relaxing aromatherapy candles and color therapy. Perhaps I need to paint my kitchen a more soothing color? I must add a word of caution here, sometimes there isn't a magickal solution.

Calling The Quarters Casting A Circle

Calling The Quarters Casting A Circle
When calling the quarters you are doing more than just walking the cardinal directions of the compass. You are asking the elements in that direction to join and bless your magic. You're seeking their support and powers to assist with your workings. Respect and understanding is the first thing to begin with. With anything it is the first thing! You should know the workings of calling the quarters and casting your circle for anything to work, but if improperly called things can be disastrous. Knowing which direction to start and which direction to travel is a very important part of rituals. Begin in the East and call to the guardians while drawing an invoking pentagram in the air. Then move clockwise to the south, west, north, and finally returning to the east.

And invoking pentagram is drawn beginning at the top of the star drawing down to the bottom left point, up to the right point, across to the left point, down to the bottom right and finally up to the top point.

This pentagram should be drawn at each quarter. Using your athame or wand as a focus of your energy. In your mind visualize what that element means to you, east-air could be a nice fresh breeze blowing, and so on. This closes your circle and those boundaries should be respected and not crossed.

As with anything, when casting a circle you will want to pick a time and location where you won't be disturbed. Choose an area with plenty of room to hold your working tools and altar but still allow you to move around freely. Nothing sucks in a ritual more than tripping around a bunch of stuff or having to get up and answer a doorbell! Your energies won't be properly focused and nothing will feel right. Also make sure you have everything you need before you begin. No one bakes a cake and then wants to have to run out to get eggs half way through! A proper circle has a diameter of 9 feet across. When you create a circle and call the quarters you are creating a doorway between the world of the living and the world of the gods. The boundary that forms as the circle creates a cone of power around and above the witch to allow them to focus their energies and draw energies from the gods and the elements. Taking that for granted and acting childishly is not wise at all. As with anything beware of what you wish for you just might get it!

Remember that any ritual is a reflection of the witch. Anything done for selfish gains or to cause harm to others is not taken lightly by the Goddess and God. All deeds are returned to the witch by three, so if all you do is act selfishly or viciously it will return to you much stronger than you sent out. Personal greed is a very evil deed!

Blessed Be

Lady Alice

P.S.

A traditional circle has a 9 foot diameter and is advisable but if you don't have this much room make it as big as you can! Just be sure it is big enough for you to comfortably work within and to contain you and your altar! I once worked with an individual whose altar and circle were within a room that was too small for one person let alone two and his altar was entirely too big for such a small area.

Open Lines Curses And Dragons Mark

Open Lines Curses And Dragons Mark Pinkham Rosemary Ellen Guiley 20 01 2012 C2C Am
During Open Lines, Stu in Lakewood, Ohio, phoned in wondering if an ashtray he purchased from an antique shop might be cursed. According to Stu, the object is partly composed of an authenticated piece of marble from Adolf Hitler's fireplace. Stu told George that he had been using the ashtray, but in light of Rosemary Ellen Guiley's discussion on curses (see below), he may not keep it. Laurieann from British Columbia explained that she has had the worst luck of her entire life since her grandmother passed away. Laurieann recounted a meeting several years earlier with a palm reader who revealed that she was hated by her grandmother. Laurieann believes she may have been cursed by her grandmother from the other side. Brian in a La Porte City, Iowa, speculated about how the '666' in his social security number could have adversely affected his life. George assuaged both Laurieann's and Brian's fears about being cursed. John from Roseburg, Oregon, shared a story about how he miraculously avoided a high-speed wreck on his motorcycle. John said he believes he was saved through angelic intervention.

Curses

Second hour guest, paranormal researcher Rosemary Ellen Guiley, talked about curses. "It's in human nature to ill wish against others, and to do rituals and invoke the aid of spirits to bring harm to others," Guiley said. Curses have been levied against people since ancient times to gain advantage politically, in business, and in love, she continued. They can be employed to bring physical harm and even death, she added. If one has a bad intention toward another person, it is technically a form of low energy cursing, Guiley explained, noting that it takes much energy to truly affect someone else's life. Guiley touched upon curses associated with objects, such as wrecked vehicles, deathbed curses, as well as generational curses. Sometimes the expectations people build around a curse gives it the power to carry on, she revealed. According to Guiley, there are many ways to remove a curse, including consulting a magically empowered person, using charms, praying, and invoking spirits. The best defense against curse energy is to have one's own spiritual house in order, she recommended.

Dragons

In the first hour, George welcomed Templar Knight and historian Mark Pinkham for a discussion on dragons. A self-described descendant of the European Dragon Families, Pinkham revealed that those from such lineages are descended from some legendary dragon of the past and possess the ability to rule. A dragon is actually energy, he explained, noting how energy travels as a spiral in the form of a serpent. According to Pinkham, dragons are still here and certain people, like himself, the legendary sorcerer Merlin, and Native American Shamans, who have a karmic connection to them, can see these dragons in other dimensions. As Monday begins the Chinese Year of the Dragon, Pinkham commented that dragons show up at the end of every cycle. They are the guardians of wisdom and show the way to transformation, he noted. Pinkham also briefly spoke about the Knights Templar and how the true grail was the power of the dragon made manifest within the knights themselves, to help them attain Gnostic awareness.

George also talked with new Saturday night C2C host John B. Wells (email), who briefly shared some about his background and his experiences as an aviator.

The Meaning Of The Life Path

The Meaning Of The Life Path Number Of 9 In Numerology
The first calculation to make for a numerological chart is the birth date. The date needs to be written out in the mm/dd/yyyy format. For example if you were born on January 23rd of 1980 it would be 01/23/1980. If you add the numbers of the birth date together you will have the Life Path number. In the example given, it would be 1 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 or 24- which then reduces to 2 + 4 or 6. The Life Path number is a representation of who you were when you were born and how those ingrained traits will take you through life. Remember that the numbers need to be between 1 and 9 except for the master numbers. Do not reduce 11 or 22 as they are the master numbers and a valid result to have.

Those who were born with a Life Path number of 9 were born for a life of drama, generosity and compassion. Humanitarians, these people are honorable and trustworthy and usually lacking prejudice. They feel a deep responsibility to help out other people in any way that they can.

It is not important for them to achieve monetary success- although it is possible that they will. But that money won't stay around for long, since their generosity will win out. Material goods may flow out as freely as the money. The attitude is that they are just things, and if those things can better another life- off they go!

They are easily able to make friends due to a charming and honest personality. They tend to be optimistic, polite and friendly. Strangers are treated like friends and often do cross into that territory. Romantic relationships prove to be more difficult since it is vital that their partner be equally as generous. If the partner isn't devoted to helping others, a chasm will form between the two that won't mend.

These people are sensitive and understanding of the world around them. There is often proficiency for art, writing or acting in this path. Even if they aren't masters of the arts themselves they are well read on the subject and spend much of their time surrounded by sensory stimulation. Creative endeavors allow them to have an emotional connection with the outside world. Philosophical thinking is also strong here and they also make great judges and educators. But it is unlikely that they will enter the business world and all of its ugly competition. There is no room for them to grow there spiritually.

The negative aspects of a Life Path number of 9 include a tendency to be demanding. Those who lose their path and can't recognize that generosity is their way to turn may become selfish and greedy of their belongings and money. There may be a desire to be ambitious and forget other people's needs. But this sort of behavior will feel disingenuous and they will usually find their way back onto the path if given some time.

Imbolc (Gwyl Mair) Quarter of the Year

April 30th, 2010

BELTAINE EVE - Here it is - the season of Summer begins tomorrow - the flowers of the Hawthorn tree are in bloom; the mantle of spring's culmination and summer's advent is beautifying the Earth. Winter's chains are broken for good as the Wheel of the Year turns from winter to summer. Love is in the air as bees carry pollen from blossom to aromatic blossom and honey begins dripping from the comb. Sacred unions are observed and sexuality is celebrated as we regard our bodies as mirrors of the divine plan.

The blazing flames from the bonfires mirror the passion within our hearts. The tenderness of the new spring season transforms before our eyes into the lush fullness of new life taking hold and thriving.

The Great Fires are ignited, and the door to the Otherworld opens once again. Beltaine is the major fertility festival in the Wheel of the Year, and there are many tradition associated with this.

The Goddess now changes her robes of Maiden for those of the Mother and the God stands by her side as partner and Consort. We celebrate the marriage of the Goddess and the God for the fertility of all. Many Witches also celebrate their own weddings, called Handfastings, at Beltaine. The change of the Goddess from Maiden to Mother is echoed in many places by the selection of a May Queen. Beltaine is also the festival of the solar God Bel and in times past the people would drive cattle between two fires to purify and protect them, and to induce fertility for the coming season. The people would jump the fires for fertility in their own lives.

Just one of the ways of celebrating Beltaine is to organize a Fire Ritual. Take two fireproof bowls or vessels with nightlights inside and place them close enough to make it interesting but far enough apart to be safe. Loose or flowing clothes should be hitched up well out of the way. Organize a dance which takes each person around each 'fire' in turn. As they circle the first fire they should say something positive about themselves, and as they circle the second they should say something about the season or the festival. Once everyone has circled both 'fires' several times they should then jump through the gap between them, making a wish for the coming season. If the fire remains lit their wish will come true, but should their jump extinguish the flames it will not.

1. Mabon/fall equinox! Two days a year, the Northern and Southern hemispheres recieve the same amount of sunlight. Not only that, each receives the same amount of light as they do dark - this is because the earth is tilted at a right angle to the sun, and the sun is directly over the equator. In Latin, the word equinox translates to "equal night." The autumn equinox takes place on or near September 21, and its spring counterpart falls around March 21. If you're in the Northern hemisphere, the days will begin getting shorter after the autumn equinox and the nights will grow longer - in the Southern hemisphere, the reverse is true. Global Traditions: The idea of a harvest festival is nothing new. In ancient Greece, Oschophoria was a festival held in the fall to celebrate the harvesting of grapes for wine. In the 1700's, the Bavarians came up with Oktoberfest, which actually begins in the last week of September, and it was a time of great feasting and merriment, still in existence today. Giving Thanks: Although the traditional American holiday of Thanksgiving falls in November, many cultures see the second harvest time of the fall equinox as a time of giving thanks. Originally, the American Thanksgiving holiday was celebrated on October 3, which makes a lot more sense agriculturally. It was later moved by Franklin Roosevelt in a bid to help post-Depression holiday sales. Symbols of the Season: The harvest is a time of thanks, and also a time of balance - after all, there are equal hours of daylight and darkness. While we celebrate the gifts of the earth, we also accept that the soil is dying. We have food to eat, but the crops are brown and going dormant. Warmth is behind us, cold lies ahead. Some symbols of Mabon include: Mid-autumn vegetables, like squashes and gourds Apples and anything made from them, such as cider or pies Seeds and seed pods Baskets, symbolizing the gathering of crops Grapes, vines, wine Feasting and Friends: Early agricultural societies understood the importance of hospitality - it was crucial to develop a relationship with your neighbors, because they might be the ones to help you when your family ran out of food. Many people, particularly in rural villages, celebrated the harvest with great deals of feasting, drinking, and eating. After all, the grain had been made into bread, beer and wine had been made, and the cattle were brought down from the summer pastures for the coming winter. Magic and Mythology: Nearly all of the myths and legends popular at this time of the year focus on the themes of life, death, and rebirth. Not much of a surprise, when you consider that this is the time at which the earth begins to die before winter sets in! Demeter and Her Daughter Perhaps the best known of all the harvest mythologies is the story of Demeter and Persephone. Demeter was a goddess of grain and of the harvest in ancient Greece. Her daughter, Persephone, caught the eye of Hades, god of the underworld. When Hades abducted Persephone and took her back to the underworld, Demeter's grief caused the crops on earth to die and go dormant. By the time she finally recovered her daughter, Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds, and so was doomed to spend six months of the year in the underworld. These six months are the time when the earth dies, beginning at the time of the autumn equinox. The Sumerian goddess Inanna is the incarnation of fertility and abundance. Inanna descended into the underworld where her sister, Ereshkigal, ruled. Erishkigal decreed that Inanna could only enter her world in the traditional ways - stripping herself of her clothing and earthly posessions. By the time Inanna got there, Erishkigal had unleashed a series of plagues upon her sister, killing Inanna. While Inanna was visiting the underworld, the earth ceased to grow and produce. A vizier restored Inanna to life, and sent her back to earth. As she journeyed home, the earth was restored to its former glory. If you choose to celebrate Mabon, give thanks for the things you have, and take time to reflect on the balance within your own life, honoring both the darkness and the light. Invite your friends and family over for a feast, and count the blessings that you have among kin and community.

Childbirth Spells

Childbirth Spells

Invocation For Childbirth-

~Orphic Hymn 2 to Prothhyraea [Artemis]

To Prothyraia [Artemis],

Fumigation from Storax.

...

O venerable Goddess,

hear my prayer,

for labour pains are thy peculiar care.

In thee,

when stretched upon the bed of grief,

the sex,

as in a mirror,

view relief.

Guard of the race,

endued with gentle mind,

to helpless youth benevolent and kind;

benignant nourisher;

great nature's key belongs to no divinity but thee.

Thou dwellest with all immanifest to sight,

and solemn festivals are thy delight.

Thine is the task

to loose the virgin's zone

and thou in every work art seen and known.

With births you sympathise,

though pleased to see

the numerous offspring of fertility.

When racked with labour pangs,

and sore distressed

the sex invoke thee,

as the soul's sure rest;

for thou Eileithyia alone

canst give relief to pain,

which art attempts to ease,

but tries in vain.

Artemis Eileithyia,

venerable power,

who bringest relief

in labour's dreadful hour;

hear,

Prothyraia

and make the infant race thy constant care."

Spell For Easy Childbirth-

~From: Crone's Book of Magical Words

To use the herb Motherwort

for an Easy Travail

...

When motherwort, undaunted weed,

Has sprung and flowered and gone to seed,

Gather the stalks with heads and leaves,

Tie them tin cords to five strong sheaves;

Batter their tips against a wall

Until the seeds, sharp-spined, shall fall,

And when they are scattered upon the ground,

These words will render the womb unbound:

Seeds that wound,

Husks that bind,

Leave only peace

And joy behind:
Take away pain,

Let strength remain.

Untie the stalks and strip them bare,

Fold their leaves in a velvet square,

Sew up the charm with yellow thread:

As soon as the woman is brought to bed,

See that she hold it in her hand

For ease, as weeds are born from the land. Spell For Naming The Unborn-

~Found in: Crone's Book of Magical Words

When the womb is six months full,

Carry wine in a silver bowl

... To a place where sun may turn it gold;

There, on a dozen chips of wood,

Write twelve names to name the child -

Male and female, six of each;

Let them drift upon the flood,

While, with eyes closed, forth you reach

And choose the name that meets your hand:

Draw the fragment out, and stand

Facing the sun, to read its sign

Inscribed forever from this time:

Now draw others, until you find

The other sex to match its twin -

And know that either name is good,

So given by sun and wine and wood.

Become Comfortable With Your Religious Identity

Become Comfortable With Your Religious Identity
Subtitle: Release Shame And Fear

By PUJA KANTH ALFRED

www.emofreetherapy.com

Chennai, India

I have worked with many clients helping them release shame, guilt and fear of punishment
While working with a lady recently, we uncovered lots of shame towards her religion. Tapping (combined with inner child healing) on specific memories from her childhood, where she was forced to do religious practices for fear of being punished by her parents, helped her release the hidden hurt, shame and anger. We gently and slowly worked on each significant memory. After the tapping, she was in a place to embrace what felt right for her and discard what didn't.

We often follow religious teachings out of fear and not out of our own will and understanding of the religion. This can also permeate in other areas of our lives - such as, it can give rise to the feeling that we are bad, unworthy etc. This often originates in our childhood. Children, who are subjected to frequent punishment when they don't comply with the religious teachings/rituals, develop strong fear towards their religion.

When our religious identification comes from a place of shame or guilt or 'must do' attitude then working on it helps. When we release these feelings, we are free to choose what feels right for us in our religion, what feels peaceful, things that soothe and help us without the baggage of all the guilt and fear.

5 Steps Geo-Specific Process To Become Comfortable With Your Religious Identity

1. LISTING FEELINGS OF SHAME AND FEAR WITHOUT INHIBITION

The first step is to list down all your negative feelings about your religion while continuously tapping. It's important to be honest with yourself and state "what you naturally feel" not what you "should" be feeling about your religion.

Given below are some of the common feelings:

Fear of punishment by God

Shame about certain religious teachings

Fear of not following those teachings or not doing some rituals

Guilt for not following some religious teachings

Anger for all the ways in which these teachings were inculcated in you.

Confusion about some of the aspects of your religion.

2. SIGNIFICANT MEMORY WORK

Find one significant memory of an incident from your childhood that has some of the feelings you have listed.

When did you first feel the fear?

What was your age at that time?

What was told to you by your parents, teachers, religious leaders, peers etc?

Were you told that you would be punished by God if you didn't follow the rituals?

Examples - A client was asked to read the bible everyday and when he couldn't read it properly he was ridiculed and told that he would be punished for not reading it well; God would be angry with him. Another client was asked to do a religious ritual from a young age and when she couldn't do it properly she was yelled at by her parents.

In both these examples the fear of being punished was strong - either by parents, by God or both.

Take one significant memory of an event and release all the difficult feelings with EFT. At the end of it see how you feel in your body and how your younger self feels naturally (Younger self refers to what you felt as a child at a specific age). Then go to the next memory.

For example, when a client released her feelings of shame, I asked her to look at her younger self again and tell me how she felt; she replied that she felt happy. Though she had the memory of being there when she was asked to take part in religious practices, she didn't feel suffocated anymore.

3. COGNITIVE SHIFTS

When you have tapped on several memories over a course of a week or so, write down any cognitive shifts, new perspectives that you have about your religion. You will get some insights about how you feel about your religion.

Tap on these cognitive shifts.

4. TEST YOUR WORK

Say this aloud and see if any blocks come up:

"I feel comfortable talking about my religion"

"I feel comfortable with my religion"

"I feel at peace with my religion"

If tail enders come up, tap it out. (Read more about tail enders on Gary's website: www.emofree.com)

5. INTEGRATION

Now tap on all positive memories that you have about your religion; how has your religion helped you?

Example: At times of distress has it given you relief? Do you feel peaceful while doing a specific ritual? Do you like praying? Bring up these memories and strengthen the positive feelings by simply narrating these memories while continuously tapping.

CONCLUSION

You will know that you are peaceful about your religious identification when you feel that, such as:

You are not your religion. It's just one part of your life.

You can discard, without guilt or fear, what doesn't feel right for you and embrace what does.

You don't judge others for following what they believe is right and don't feel like influencing them with your beliefs.

Then truly you are liberated from the limiting beliefs of your religion.

Beltane At The Baylands

Beltane At The Baylands
Several years ago a friend told me about an event called Beltane at the Baylands. At this ritual (both cultural and Pagan) a hundred or more completely insane people, along with various troupes of Morris Dancers such as Mad Molly and The Deer Creek Morris Men, get up at four in the morning to dance the sun up near the wetlands.

The dancing starts at at 5:15 and goes until sunrise. The Morris Dance teams all perform. At the end they teach everyone a folk dance, and the whole crowd dances together in a circle.

This year, I got there rather later than I planed. (1) I finally made it to the park by 5:30 and I think I was the last one to arrive. As I drove along the road, past the duck ponds and up toward the Lucy Evans nature center I saw about a dozen black tailed hares eating the tall grass by the side of the road. I slowed down so I wouldn't hit one by accident, and wished them all a Merry Beltane.

By the time I arrived, the Morris dancing was in full swing. I hugged a few friends and walked along the edge of the crowd until I came to some hedges at the north-east edge of the lot. Past these hedges is an clear view of the bay and a ramp that leads down to the water line. A walk down the ramp brings you to a floating deck. Bird watchers love this spot. From here you can see over to the East Bay hills and you get a good view of the tidal marsh birds, as well as the swallows, hawks, ravens and geese. All these birds were out that day, including terns who were fishing and the purple swallows, who were flitting after bugs in the early morning light. I stood on the ramp, listened to the music and watched the sun come up over the hills. As the sun rose it colored the clouds rose-gold and white. Light touched the dark water, turning it silver and pink. The water was still enough for scrying, until a bird landed, then it shimmered slightly, sending ripples to the shoreline, where the stilts strutted and bobbed for food. They seemed to keep time with the dancers on the green, especially during the stick dance.

I've rarely seen such a morning. The bay, the clouds and the mountains together looked like an early Monet I once saw in Paris. Only this time, instead of standing in the d'Orsay, I was looking at a living picture while Celtic folk tunes played in the background. It was so beautiful, I stayed at the water's edge, enthralled, and missed the dancing completely. As a friend of mine says, sometimes the best prayer is to simply stand outside and say "Thank you".

Finally, the sun came up and the Circle Dance was done. The crowd helped the organizers clean up the space and went to their cars. I met up with some friends and went out to breakfast. I've enjoyed some magnificent sunrises in my life, but that one will always remain one of my favorites.

Sia

(1) I was coming off the 101 when I got a flat tire. I pulled off on to Embarcadero street and parked under a street lamp. I was more annoyed at missing the Beltane celebration than I was at the tire. After all, I was in a safe place, the blow out had not a caused an accident, it wasn't raining and I had my cell phone. If you are going to have car trouble, this is how you do it. Mostly, I just wanted to the coffee and muffins I knew were waiting for me a mere 10 miles away, at the end of the park. Happily, the a tow truck from AAA showed up quickly and I was back on the road, using my spare within half an hour. In the meantime, I had explained to the truck driver why I was there (and why so many other cars were going by in a deserted area at 5 in the morning.) He turned out to be half Irish and very interested in Celtic music and events, so I gave him a card. The Goddess has a sense of humor and she likes to use me as she sees fit.

Rite Of The Office Of The Readings

Rite Of The Office Of The Readings
Looking over the posts for the Office of the Readings, I realized that I hadn't included the actual ritual that we performed for the days following the Invocation of Horus on March 20th. I'm going to post it at the top of the blog for now, but I'll eventually be changing the timestamp so that it follows the Invocation of Horus and precedes the subsequent readings. The idea, then, is that there will be a full collection of rituals and readings for anyone who would like to perform their own series in the years to come.

This ritual was adapted by Soror Lalitha from Ordo Sunyata Vajra's "Diamond Sapphire Gem of Radiant Light" and "The Office of the Readings for the High Holy Days" by the Companions of Monsalvat.

0. PREPARATION

The ritual uses two altars, one in the center of the temple and one in the east or in the direction of Boleskine. The ritual is divided into four phases. The first three are based on the principle stages of alchemical work: Nigredo (March 20-25), Albedo (March 26-April 1), and Rubedo (April 1-7). The final stage is the three Days of the Feast (April 8-10), the three days of the writing of "The Book of the Law". The Officiant wears black during Nigredo, white during Albedo, and red during Rubedo. A candle of the same color should be left burning on the eastern altar during each of the three phases along with a statue of Horus and optionally one of Ahathoor. The colors are cycled through in the same order for each of the last three days - black for April 8, white for April 9, and red for April 10. The Officiant directs the ritual from the central altar. On this altar are placed any desired magical tools and a bell or gong. The Lectionary containing the readings is placed on the eastern altar for most of the rite and is retrieved by the Officiant when the readings are given from the central altar. It is then returned.

I. INTROIT

Music is played as the congregation is admitted to the temple. The introit music is as follows:

Nigredo: "Depth of Catastrophe" by Alizadeh

Albedo: "Ninth Aethyr Canticle"

Rubedo: "169 Cries"

First Day of the Feast: "Sirt im Sasani"

Second Day of the Feast: "Horus"

Third Day of the Feast: "Annua Gaudia" by Moore

Each member of the congregation is purified with water and consecrated with incense as they enter the temple. The same is then done to the four quarters and the two altars. Some of the pieces are fairly short so they should be played on repeat until all of these actions have been completed if the congregation is large.

II. OPENING

OFFICIANT: BALASTI! OMPEHDA!

"The Officiant performs the Star Ruby, and when finished strikes the gong."

DO WHAT THOU WILT SHALL BE THE WHOLE OF THE LAW.

ALL: LOVE IS THE LAW, LOVE UNDER WILL.

III. FORMULATION OF THE LIGHT

"The Officiant performs the Star Sapphire."

OFFICIANT: IF THEY SAY TO YOU, WHERE DID YOU COME FROM?, SAY TO THEM, WE CAME FROM THE LIGHT. IF THEY SAY TO YOU, IS IT YOU?, SAY, WE ARE ITS CHILDREN, AND WE ARE THE ELECT OF THE LIVING FATHER. IF THEY ASK YOU, WHAT IS THE SIGN OF YOUR FATHER IN YOU?, SAY TO THEM, IT IS MOVEMENT AND REPOSE. "(Gospel of Thomas, Saying Number 70)"

ALL: NOW I BEGIN TO PRAY, THOU CHILD,

HOLY THY NAME AND UNDEFILED.

THY REIGN IS COME, THY WILL IS DONE,

HERE IS THE BREAD, HERE IS THE BLOOD,

BRING ME THROUGH MIDNIGHT TO THE SUN.

SAVE ME FROM EVIL AND FROM GOOD,

THAT THY ONE CROWN OF ALL THE TEN

EVEN NOW AND HERE BE MINE.

AMEN.

"Officiant strikes the gong."

IV. PRELIMINARY LITANY OF THE OFFICE OF THE READINGS

Officiant: O my Lord, my beloved! How shall I indite songs, when even the memory of the shadow of thy glory is a thing beyond all music of speech or of silence? - Be thou Hadit, my secret centre, my heart I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

Officiant: I have wandered in desolate places; I have dwelt long apart from delight.

All: Mine heart is uplifted in me, and the serpent flame therein; I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

Officiant: In the midst of the market's booths, I was alone; only Thy voice murmured to me, "Come away!"

All: Mine heart is uplifted in me, and the serpent flame therein; I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

Officiant: Whither shall I go, if not to Thee? How shall I enter, if not by the four gates? I shall stand on the floor of Thy palace - even upon the paving of silver and gold I shall stand.

All: Mine heart is uplifted in me, and the serpent flame therein; I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

Officiant: Sweet unto me are Thy words, O my Beautiful! my ear desireth them as the fire craveth kindling. As the falcon enchained perisheth for want of flight, even so my soul for want of Thee.

All: Mine heart is uplifted in me, and the serpent flame therein; I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

Officiant: The rose turneth her face unto the Sun; I shall raise my countenance to the stars, Yea, even to the dome of stars wherewith Thou hast roofed Thine house, that house wherein I shall dwell with Thee forever.

All: Mine heart is uplifted in me, and the serpent flame therein; I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

Officiant: That House, my refuge, and the table Thou hast laid for me - O food to nourish the deepest, O wine to intoxicate the inmost!

All: Mine heart is uplifted in me, and the serpent flame therein; I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

Officiant: Thou hast spread the banquet, and I shall feast thereupon until the shadows flee away, in Thine everlasting Glory.

All: Mine heart is uplifted in me, and the serpent flame therein; I shall get me to the House of the Beloved.

"During the Nigredo, Albedo, and Rubedo the corresponding hymn is played or sung here. The hymns that we use are by the late Soror Marfiza of the Companions of Monsalvat and are named after the three stages. There is no corresponding hymn for the Days of the Feast. "

Officiant: The Speech in the Silence.

The Words against the Son of Night.

The Voice of Tahuti in the Universe in the Presence of the Eternal.

The Formulas of Knowledge.

THE WISDOM OF BREATH.

THE ROOT OF VIBRATION.

THE SHAKING OF THE INVISIBLE.

THE ROLLING ASUNDER OF THE DARKNESS.

THE BECOMING VISIBLE OF MATTER.

THE PIERCING OF THE SCALES OF THE CROCODILE.

The Breaking Forth of the Light!

V. THE OFFICE OF THE READINGS

"The readings are given here. For most of the Holy Days there are two readings. The first is the appropriate Holy Book reading according to the calendar set down by the Temple and College of Thelema ("
OFFICIANT: I AM THE FLAME THAT BURNS IN EVERY HEART OF MAN, AND IN THE CORE OF EVERY STAR. I AM ALONE: THERE IS NO GOD WHERE I AM. THERE IS NO LAW BEYOND DO WHAT THOU WILT.

"Pause."

NOW MEDITATE UPON THE DIVINE RADIANCE, THAT ONE LIGHT WHICH DESERVES OUR REVERENCE, THE ONE WHOSE NOBLE THOUGHT ENERGIZES AND DIRECTS OUR AWAKENING.

"Formless meditation or chanting follows. A mantra that we have used to good effect in this ritual is NEFER NETJER HERU WED NEH (the perfect god Horus brings life)."

VI. FINAL BENEDICTION

Officiant: Remember all ye that existence is pure joy; that all the sorrows are but as shadows; they pass but there is that which remains.

All: I am uplifted in thine heart, and the kisses of the stars rain hard upon thy body.

Officiant: May Light, Life, Love and Liberty be extended universally to all, under the regency of the One Law of Thelema. May all attain the Stone of the Wise, the Summum Bonum, True Wisdom and Perfect Happiness.

All: ABRAHADABRA!

Officiant: There is an end of the speech; let the Silence of darkness be broken;

All: Let it return into the silence of light.

Animal Totems The Js

Animal Totems The Js
Animal Totems ~{the J's}~

The Kangaroo

The kangaroo is mostly terrestrial and all are herbivorous. They are found throughout Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. They have long powerful hind legs and feet for hopping and leaping, their predominant forms of locomotion. Their long tails, thickened at the base are used for balancing. Each long narrow hind foot has four toes. The number four is the number associated with foundation. When the kangaroo appears it is asking you to review the foundation on which you stand, your ideals, beliefs and actions and then take a giant leap over all obstacles that have prevented you from attaining your dreams.

The feet are rich in symbology. It is through the feet that the body makes its essential contact with the earth plane, and through the muscular control of the feet that balance in the body is maintained. Feet represent that part of the individual which is most closely akin to the material plane of manifestation. The kangaroo teaches us how to balance our material life with our spiritual knowledge. When this medicine is underdeveloped foot and leg problems can occur. Kangaroo medicine people make excellent reflexologists and movement therapists.

When kangaroos have a chambered stomach that is functionally similar to cattle and sheep. They regurgitate the vegetation they have eaten, chew it as cud, then swallow it again for final digestion. The digestive and eliminatory systems of those with this medicine are very sensitive. Proper care of the stomach, chewing food thoroughly and incorporating herbs and digestive aids into the diet is helpful.

When kangaroos are chased by predators they are incredibly fast. They hop quickly and effortlessly to safety. They don't stop and think about where they are going, rather they allow their instincts to move them. This is a great teaching for those with this totem. Instead of contemplating each and every step we take in minuet detail we need to follow the kangaroos lead and allow our instinctive knowing to guide us. Instinct balanced with intellect restores our trust in spirit.

Kangaroos are incredibly focused. Their energy field is tightly woven around them preventing distractions. Those with this totem need to keep their personal energy fields clear of outside influences to aid them in staying centered and focussed.

When the kangaroo hops into a persons life get ready for adventure and change. The kangaroo dares you to leap into the unknown without fear, connect with your personal rhythms and honor your intuitive knowing. The choice is yours.

The Kestrel

The kestrel is the smallest member of the falcon family. Like all birds of prey it is strongly connected to the accuracy of movement. Speed and grace in hunting are its strongest attributes. Kestrels perch themselves high above their prey. When the timing is right they swoop down, hoover in the air and attack. Hovering is uncommon amongst most birds and symbolizes the ability to use flight to its fullest advantage. In a person this advantage plays out through the creative imaginative

mind strengthening ones intuitive agility.

Kestrel medicine people often have the desire to site or be placed in a position where a wide range of vision is possible. They also enjoy high places with an expansive view. Their need to spend time alone is strong and a sense of independence is necessary in order to maintain healthy relationships. They do well in any type of work that requires planning and make excellent strategists and diplomats.

The kestrel teaches us how to discover our personal rhythm and respond to it accordingly. As we expand our personal energy field and awaken our sight into a broader perspective we learn when to act and when to retreat. The power of the kestrel is mental concentration, patience and precise action. It recognizes opportunities and acts upon them at the correct moment.

When the kestrel appears it might be asking you to stimulate your mental faculties and move quickly and gracefully into your desired future. It teaches you to listen to the rhythm of each situation and commit to your actions for the greatest success.

The Kingfisher

Kingfishers are found worldwide but are mostly tropical. They are solitary birds that utter distinct rattling or piping calls that can be heard a long distance away. The ability to express oneself in a clear and concise manner is part of the teachings it holds.

Their usual nest is a burrow in a sand bank or in a hollow tree. Kingfishers have been known to tunnel into sand banks several feet. This indicates the need for sacred space around them. Those with kingfisher medicine will find that they must have time within their day for quiet contemplation where intrusions of any kind are not permitted.

Bold in its actions, the kingfisher will dive headlong into the water to catch small fish. It shows us how to plunge into the unknown with confidence and not with fear. Kingfishers have large heads, long and massive bills and compact bodies. Their physical appearance is symbolic of the challenges and opportunities relevant for those with this medicine.

A large head can indicate past life connections relating to the misuse of the ego. In this life a need to keep the ego in balance is mandatory. The long and massive bill of the kingfisher suggests a need to use ones words carefully and their compact bodies represent a need for regular physical exercise and the toning of ones muscles. This need is sometimes a result of a past life influence relating to physical health or structural imbalances that is present in this life.

Kingfishers are found near the water. Water is associated with the emotional body of man and those who have this totem will find a strong need to live on or near the water. An exception to this is the Kookaburra, a forest kingfisher who is less associated with water.

The kingfisher is a bird that holds many teachings. Most of its teachings relate directly to the spiritual, emotional and physical growth of those that hold this medicine. When growth is achieved prosperity on all levels is attained. The kingfisher has the energy to accomplish various tasks in an efficient manner. It is a powerful teacher and those with this totem would be wise to call upon it when the need arises.

The Kinkajou

The kinkajou are extremely curious and love to explore things. They are fascinated by the mysteries of life and often find themselves in unusual situations. They can also be shy and retiring depending on their mood. They are sometimes kept as pets and if treated gently they will return the favor.

If the kinkajou is angered or frightened it can deliver a sharp bite. Those with this totem need to exercise caution and never speak harshly or bite with a vengeance when provoked. Balanced action and reaction is part of the kinkajou's medicine.

A member of the raccoon family, the kinkajou is distinguished by its long, prehensile tail. Its large eyes denote its curious nature and its low set rounded ears are keenly attuned to sound waves within the elements of mother earth. Some cultures believe that the kinkajou is able to predict upcoming earth changes because of its ability to hear sound waves and to feel subtle vibrations moving through the earths crust.

Kinkajous are highly intelligent and usually live alone or in pairs. They spend most of their time in trees and rarely leave them. Those with this medicine should go into retreat regularly in order to rejuvenate themselves on all levels. They should also spend time in the forest and stay connected to nature.

The Kinkajou feeds on fruit, honey, insects, small birds and mammals. They have a small digestive system and cannot tolerate heavy foods. A diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables would benefit those with this totem.

The kinkajou responds to subtle vibrational frequencies and within these frequencies lays the secret of a new life unfolding. If kinkajou appears to you suddenly and without warning expect a new beginning in some area of your life.

This medicine teaches us how to hear what's really being said and assists us in opening up our clairaudient channels. Those with this medicine should use their minds in an exploratory way, especially in the exploration of sound as a healing tool.

The Kite

The kite is a bird of prey and belongs to one of three sub families. They are lightly built with a small head and a partly bare face. They have short beaks and long narrow wings and tail. They occur world wide in warm regions. Their partly bare face is symbolic. It asks those with this medicine to allow their true identity to emerge. Take off your mask and express your true self with pride and dignity. Those with this totem will find that a warmer climate is best suited to them. The warmth of the sun promotes relaxation. When relaxation occurs the awakening of ones personal divinity begins.

Kites are graceful flyers slowly flapping their wings as they glide through the air with their wings angled back. They appear to be buoyant in their movements and can teach us how to move through life with the greatest of east. Holding the energy of calmness and certainty in all that they do they help us discover our own inner rhythm. Those with this totem would benefit by studying their personal bio rhythm chart as well as the charts of those they interact with. This study can aid an individual in discovering what lies beneath the disguise of the human psyche. The practice of all forms of gentle movement is also advised.

Some kites live on insects, others are primarily scavengers eating anything from rodents to reptiles. Proper diet is an important part of the message it holds. To understand the proper dietary implications for those with this totem it is helpful to identify which sub family your kite totem is from. Efficient digestion and assimilation of food is essential to maintain optimum health.

Kites teach us how to respond to people and situations with grace and gentleness. It reminds us to give as well as receive. When the kite flies into your life ask yourself the following questions. Are you experiencing the gentleness of life? Are you nervous, tense or anxious? Do you take the time to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures that life has to offer? Are you expressing kindness to others as well as yourself? The kite carries the promise of joy on its wings. All you need to do is listen to its message and apply yourself accordingly.

The Koala

The koala is one of the most admired marsupial mammals. Their cute cuddly appearance appeals to people of all ages. Koalas grow to about 21 to 33 inches long and are virtually tail less. Their diet consists of a certain type of eucalyptus leaf. One of the most unusual characteristics of the koala is that it seldom drinks. The name koala is thought to mean "no drink" in several aboriginal tongues. Their limited diet encourages a sluggish digestive system. If those with this totem consume a large variety of foods digestive problems could occur. Basic food groups are recommended with an emphasis on herbs and herbal remedies.

Koalas are solitary animals. They are independent and a bit indifferent to family members. At birth a young koala is about the size of a bee. The mother will raise her young attentively until it is strong enough to be on its own. Once this happens the emotional bond between the mother and her offspring is broken. Individuals with koala medicine often require periods of isolation and an environment with little noise. Emotional expression is difficult which can make intimate relationships challenging. The koala teaches us how to be comfortable with our own company. Those with this totem make excellent priests and nuns.

The koalas eyesight is poor although their cup like ears can hear acutely. They also have a highly developed sense of smell. Koala medicine people have strong psychic and clairaudient abilities. Sound that soothes the senses and aromatherapy benefit them.

Although they appear to be passive with a nonchalant attitude, koalas are very territorial. They demand their personal space and accommodate one another accordingly. They sleep as long as 18 hours a day and are most active at night. Koala medicine people do their best work in the late evening and early morning hours.

Perched high in a tree the koalas grip is secure. As they move from limb to limb their footing is solid. When the koala appears in our life its reminding us to stand solid within ourselves and not be influenced by situations or events.

Seldom distracted and always focused, the koala is a master in the art of deep relaxation and concentration. They hold the teachings of stress free movement and can show us how to create and maintain sacred space in our lives.

The Kookaburra

The kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher family. One of its most distinct features is its famous laugh heard at dawn and dusk when it is marking out its territory. Because of its laughter one would think that these birds represented peace and happiness. Although its laugh is contagious don't be fooled by this daring and territorial bird.

A friend told me a story about a camping trip he was on. Sitting down to dinner with friends, cooked sausages had been placed on stick's awaiting their empty stomachs. A fearless and determined kookaburra swooped down and lifted the sausage off the stick and flew off to enjoy its meal. The kookaburra launches itself from a perch to pounce on its prey, or in this case my friends dinner!

Excellent divers, the kookaburra is extremely focused. They go after what they want when they want it. Those with this totem have the ability to achieve their goals if they stay centered and maintain their focus. If the kookaburra suddenly dives into your life its telling you to manifest your dreams instead of day dreaming about them.

The kookaburra has many personalities to fit a variety of situations and is known as the master of illusion. Acquiring master ship is hard work. Because of this the kookaburra demands respect and it usually gets it! Individuals with this totem often achieve prominent roles in society that demand respect and recognition. They make excellent leaders and diplomats.

Kookaburras form community groups which together share and defend their home territory. These groups have a dominant mating pair and other lesser members. A secure home life is important to those with this medicine.

Laughing Kookaburras do not build nests, instead they use existing cavities in trees. Although they can be aggressive when defending their territory of hunting for food they hold an air of indifference when it comes to other activities. When the kookaburra laughs its way into your life ask yourself these questions. Is your fear limiting your accomplishments? Are you focused in your pursuits? Are you determined to change unhealthy habits? If your answer is yes call upon the kookaburra to help you.
