Winter solstice is almost gone as is the shortest day of the year. Now hope for longer days of sunlight and warmer weather takes the front position.
"It's all, I think, in our genes. It's fundamentally embedded," Hufnagel said. "It helps to understand our state of mind and why we feel the way we feel at the holidays - to understand there is a connection to the universe and a reason why we feel relieved and happy and want to celebrate."
I don't get it. Why is there this need to be "one with the universe" or nature.

Move over, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and even New Year's Eve.
Those celebrations are just the new kids on the block, at least compared to the winter solstice.
Today, the Northern Hemisphere will mark the winter solstice, the shortest day (and longest night) of the year, meaning that the amount of daylight will gradually increase as spring approaches.
Though the solstice has been marked with rituals since ancient times, it may go unnoticed by many in these hectic days leading up to Christmas and the end of the calendar year. Some, however, will celebrate the day with bonfires, meditation and even nature walks.
While the thought that today is indeed the longest night of the year may be depressing, others find it a sign of hope and change worth celebrating.
That sign of hope is one reason why religions throughout the ages have placed holidays around the winter solstice, said Beth Hufnagel, an Anne Arundel Community College astronomy professor.
"It's all, I think, in our genes. It's fundamentally embedded," Hufnagel said. "It helps to understand our state of mind and why we feel the way we feel at the holidays - to understand there is a connection to the universe and a reason why we feel relieved and happy and want to celebrate. It's only natural any religion would want to tie into this."
It's no coincidence that our calendar's new year is close to the solstice, too.
"Doesn't it seem natural to have a new year when the sun is coming back to us - a rebirth?" Hufnagel said.
For Hufnagel and other astronomers - both pros and amateurs - the winter solstice has an added benefit: It offers the most stargazing time.
While the solstice is "not an exciting thing to look at" in the realm of astronomy, it is an important point in the annual cycle of the Earth's motion in relation to the sun, Hufnagel said.
The Earth always tilts toward the North Star, and in winter the Northern Hemisphere is tilted slightly away from the sun, bringing us winter while the Southern Hemisphere has summer.
The return of the sun and the start of a new year will be the focus of a spiritual ceremony planned for tonight by Inspired Events of Maryland, an Odenton-based group that serves as a network for alternative spiritual and healing practitioners.
A main candle will be lit, and then participants will be invited to come forward to light more candles and share their hopes for the new year, said Mary Perry, manager of Inspired Events.
The candle-lighting will be followed by a period of meditation, then a potluck dinner.
This is the first winter solstice celebration for Inspired Events. "On the solstice, we want to welcome in the sun... It is a time of celebration. It is the longest night of the year and from here on, the sun comes back into our lives," Perry said.
Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary on the Patuxent River in south county has been holding special nature hikes on or around the winter and summer solstices and the vernal and autumnal equinoxes for several years.
"We're very aware of the natural cycles of the year. We like to mark these," said Elaine Friebele, education director for Jug Bay.
While the winter solstice hike is a standard nature walk, the timing makes it special.
"It's to get out and enjoy nature, even in the sort-of-dormant time," she said. "We usually end on the deck overlooking the river with the sunset. It's a nice way to be out and acknowledge that the year is changing."

Present-day fringe theorists often cite the case of Galileo (1564-1642) as proof that they're right and the authorities are wrong. It's true that Galileo was constantly in conflict with the intellectual establishment of his time, and that history has proved him to be on the winning side on all the big issues. The Earth really does move around the Sun, and heavy objects really do fall at the same rate as light ones. But is Galileo really such a good role model? Unlike the armchair scientists and internet cranks of today, Galileo didn't always get it right.
To start with, it's worth dispelling a couple of tenacious myths about Galileo. The first myth is that he set out to disprove the Bible. In fact, it's clear from his Selected Writings" that he had no problems at all with the Bible: "Holy Scripture can never lie or be in error... nonetheless some of its interpreters or expositors can. All of Galileo's arguments are aimed not at the Bible but at the Greek philosopher Aristotle-who was held by the Church to be second only to the Bible in authority.
Galileo used the Biblical story of Joshua, where God caused the Sun to stand still in order to lengthen the day, as evidence that the Aristotelian earth-centred model is wrong, and the Copernican sun-centred model is correct: "This passage of scripture clearly demonstrates the impossibility of the Aristotelian and Ptolemaic world system, and on the contrary fits perfectly well with the system of Copernicus. Galileo argues (correctly) that making the Sun stand still in the Aristotelian view would actually shorten the day, not lengthen it (since the length of the day is set by the "Primum Mobile", and the Sun moves backwards relative to this). What you actually need to do is freeze up the whole Solar System. Galileo had observed the Sun to rotate on its own axis, and believed (wrongly) that this rotation was the source of all the motion in the Solar System-hence he argued it was this rotation that God halted in the story of Joshua.
Another myth-conception is that the Church prohibited Galileo from writing about the Sun-centred theory, and that his 'crime' was to defy this prohibition. Actually, the Church "encouraged "him to write about the theory... as long as he ended up debunking it, or at least showing that the truth couldn't be proved one way or the other. What he was prohibited from doing was offering any concrete proof that Copernicus was right and Aristotle was wrong. But that's what he did, and that's what got him into trouble.
The hilarious thing (and now I'm finally getting to the point of the article) is that Galileo's proof was rubbish. At the time, no-one knew what caused sea tides-Galileo's fellow Copernican Kepler believed they were due to the influence of the Moon, but Galileo dismissed this as mystical mumbo-jumbo ("Of all the great men who have speculated on this marvellous effect of nature, the one who most astonishes me is Kepler... he had grasped the motions attributed to the Earth, and yet he still listened and assented to the notion of the Moon's influence on the water, and occult properties, and similar childish ideas.") Galileo was convinced the tides were a direct result of the Earth's motion, in the same way water sloshes around in a vase when you move it. But Galileo was wrong about this... and he was wrong about the Moon having nothing to do with the tides!
You might think that, having upset the Irish nation last week by suggesting that St Patrick was British, I've now lurched on Boris Johnson style to insult the Italians-by pointing out the single occasion on which Galileo made a mistake. But it's worse than that... he made another mistake as well! Galileo believed that orbits had to be perfectly circular (again, this was a disagreement with Kepler). This created a problem in the case of comets, which are on manifestly non-circular orbits. Galileo's solution was to dismiss comets as not really existing at all-merely an illusion caused by the Sun reflecting off the upper layers of the atmosphere!

During this wild week dominated by controversy and radical, even radioactive sudden change, Comet ISON has offered more than just a diversion but a chance to experience the wonders of the divine universe. ISON in many ways is reflecting a current fiery trine between the Sun (our identity) in far reaching Sagittarius and the innovative planet Uranus in pioneering Aries. Is Comet ISON, the comet of the century or just a giant snowball that will disintegrate when hit by a CME? With perhilion less than 24 hours away, this comet has captured our imagination and sent out mixed signals regarding his/her fate. Just like here on terra firma, where we may all be a little on edge or confused as tense, historical planetary combinations per geocentric astrology reflect this Comet's transit.
ISON has been a mystery from the beginning as we examine a chart set for September 21, 2012 when ISON was discovered. Astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok discovered ISON in September 2012 using a telescope near Kislovodsk, Russia, that is part of the International Scientific Optical Network. This discovery time period/chart cast reflects evidence of lots of scientific and detailed observation even a devotional feeling toward this sungrazer with Virgo rising @ 9 degrees alongside Ceres and Vesta. The Sabian Symbol for the ascendant at 9 degrees - "An impressionistic painter making a futuristic drawing." This symbol speaks of the desire to go beyond restricted reality and express in a careful, meticulous way that which is desired for the future not which supposedly valued. The fact that both Vesta and Ceres oppose Chiron and Neptune in Pisces speaks of universal healing and expanded imagination. Perhaps the most striking thing about this chart of ISON's discovery is that Mercury ruler of the chart is opposing Uranus in Aries when freedom of thought can either lead to enlightenment or to eccentric and exaggerated thinking. AS WE WILL SEE BOTH THIS CHART SET FOR SEPTEMBER 21ST 2012 USING GEOCENTRIC (EARTH ORIENTED ASTROLOGY) AND THE CHARTS FOR TODAY'S PERHILEON HAVE MERCURY OPPOSING URANUS IN CARDINAL SIGNS.
According to Spaceweather.com, Comet ISON will makes it's closest approach to the Sun around 1:45 p.m. EST on Nov. 28th, which is Thanksgiving Day in the USA when gratitude should dominate. With all the anticipation and expectation about ISON's surviving the journey, should we still be thankful, if ISON gets hit by a large CME? CMEs are magnetized clouds of plasma hurled into space by the explosions of sunspot the comet will be little more than a million kilometers above the sun's fiery surface. Temperatures around ISON's icy nucleus could rise as high as 5000o F. No one knows if it can survive that kind of baking. When a Comet passes too close to a planet or sun, the gravitational forces can tear it apart - this is called the Roche Limit. The Roche Limit for comets moving around the sun is 1.49 million miles, and Comet Ison will pass within 1.16 million miles - inside the Roche Limit. Back in 2007, Comet Encke flew too close to the Sun and a solar eruption struck with sudden ferocity to rip it's tail off.
Just like the discovery chart from back in 2012, Neptune and Mercury are strong leading to divine imagination and uncanny outcomes. If Comet ISON doesn't break up, we could have a spectacular views in December and no reason to worry. If ISON breaks up and spreads out, there are a number of possibilities.. It can lose speed and be pulled into the sun, or some of the pieces may be pulled into the sun while others escape. Escaping objects will probably be slowed due to the sun's pull and their outbound speed and trajectories will change, increasing the chance of them crossing the Earth's orbit. According to Joel Graves on this theology website, " the real problem comes after Ison goes behind the sun and begins its return trip. When would the comet and/or pieces of comet hit the Earth? And where? " Joel goes on to discuss Biblical prophecy per Revelations connecting it to the passage of Comets this year. "The first trumpet, Rev 8:7, announces hail and fire mixed with blood and a third of the earth burns up. The hail and fire sound like meteors hitting the earth. This could be a precursor of an inbound asteroid or the effect of our attempt to destroy the asteroid, causing smaller pieces to precede the larger object. " Instead of predicting as to what will occur, lets take a lesson from Mercury's geocentric transit in Scorpio which favors the process of thorough investigation.
In order to do this I have erected a charts set for 1:45 PM EST or 6:45 PM UT for the ISON's perihelion. Lest we forget Mercury has met Saturn 3 times in the last two months, adding a serious and even pessimistic approach (Mercury stationed to move retrograde on October 21st then direct on November 10th) Mercury won't leave the realm of the underworld, Scorpio till December 4th. With this combination in the sign of death and rebirth, will this comet or messenger be a potent symbol for our own renewal and redemption? Since Pluto now ruler of Scorpio is in the greatest aspect of most of our lifetimes, a waxing square which continues till 2015, powerful and secret forces are making their presence known to the human race.

The second chart we will examine is set for Universal Time in Greenwhich, UK This chart has Cancer rising at 19 degrees (Sabian A priest performing a marriage ceremony adding a sacred side to the event). On some level there is sacred unity evident in the meeting of ISON with our solar orb. On the geocentric time we have a Venus-Jupiter opposition which is always great for huge celebrations like marriage. Uranus, that perennial trickster and bringer of the outer forces of the universe is at the top of the chart square expansive Jupiter in Cancer in the 12th. Jupiter-Uranus in this alignment speaks of spontaneous, free spirited revolutionary shifts for all of us in the Solar System. Jupiter in the 12th also is about the glory of solitude and merging with the divine. Of course since Jupiter is transiting in Cancer in the earthly geocentric version, gratitude can find a home on this cosmic event.

COMET ISON EMERGES
November 28th. After pronouncing Comet ISON R.I.P. this confusing saga continues to amaze

Per Spaceweather.com "Comet ISON flew through the sun's atmosphere on Nov. 28th and the encounter did not go well for the icy comet. JUST BEFORE PERIHELION (CLOSEST APPROACH TO THE SUN) THE COMET RAPIDLY FADED AND APPEARED TO DISINTEGRATE. This prompted reports of ISON's demise. Gemini (pronounced "JEM-in-ai") is Latin for "twins." It's the third sign of the Zodiac. People who are born between May 22rd to June 20th. Like all zodiac signs, it has a constellation and a story.
In Greek mythology, these twins have names: Castor and Pollux. Their mother was Leda, the Queen of Sparta, but they have different fathers. Castor was fathered by Tyndareus, the King of Sparta, and Pollux was the son of Zeus. Together, they are called the Dioscuri. Not quite as catchy as the Wonder Twins. They just so happen to be the siblings of Helen of Troy. They are very naughty, one myth involves them stealing some cattle. The constellation is very close to the Milky Way, which was described in mythology as being a herd of cattle. The brothers were also very close. When Castor died, Pollux begged his father to give Castor immortality. He granted this wish by placing both brothers in the night sky.
The constellation is important to other cultures as well. In Babylonian mythology, it represents the two gods Meshlamtaea and Lugalirra. In Chinese astrology, the stars were broken up into two different constellations: The White Tiger of the West and The Vermilion Bird of the South. In Norse mythology, it's heavily associated with the god Loki.
Gemini is ruled by the element of air, which will become obvious when you research it. Traditional Gemini traits include intelligence, communication, adaptability, and youthfulness. Like children, they are very imaginative and curious. On the flip side, they are a bit...well...two-faced. People who know Gemini's don't know which personality is going to come out. When we look at the ayana of planets we see that the ayana of Rahu is opposite to that of Jupiter. Hence wherever Rahu is strong, Jupiter is rendered weak. In the Kalachakra we see that the Kala of the Dik goveren by Jupiter, is ruled by Jupiter and hence any Jupiterian activity is prohibited in the Rahu Kala.
VENUS IN SIXTH
Jaimini has given a dictum Shasta Shukra Marana Karaka, which says Venus in the 6th becomes Marana Karaka. Why this is so?
Sixth is the house of Service and Venus is the karaka of Pleasures, the two opposites. What shall we expect when the chief karaka for pleasure is asked to serve others! In the natural zodiac, 6th is house of debilitation and the sign Virgo symbolizes a virgin (the purest). Hence at this place Venus becomes incapable to enhance its own Karakatva.
The two karakas for the 6th, Mars (Enemies) and Saturn (Servant). In the Kalachakra this is clear that Mars obstructs the ayana of Venus. Hence none of the Venusian activity shall be performed in the Mars's Kala. Moreover Saturn signify hard work, which is not suited to pleasures and luxury seeking Venus and hence she goes to the Marana Avastha, if placed in 6th.
SATURN IN LAGNA
Saturn is the Karaka (Significator) of destruction of intelligence (Dhi) and opposed to Satya, being opposes to Jupiter and Sun respectively. Lagna stands for the intelligence and health of the native and Saturn is opposed to the karakas of the Lagna, Jupiter and Saturn. Whenever Sat goes to the first house, it can't stand the Karakas and goes into the marana Avastha.
Now in the natural zodiac too Saturn gets debilitated in the first house Aries, where the fiery Sun gets exalted. Here Sun opposes the lethargy and sluggishness of Saturn and wants it to be fast, jovial and forces it to promote the significations of Sun. According to the calendar, the 21st of June will be the first day of summer, which is kind of silly even way up here in the tundra of Minnesota. We have had summer-like weather since the end of May, but summer officially starts on Tuesday, when the sun enters the sign of Cancer. However, pagans have referred to this date as Midsummer, and this evening is known as the famous Midsummer's eve, for those who are fans of William Shakespeare. I can almost hear Puck saying to his comrades, "What fools these mortals be?"
Whether it's the first day of summer, or midsummer, there seems to be something incongruous about the calendar and what's happening outdoors in regards to the weather. This incongruity becomes more apparent if you happen to live in the higher latitudes in either the northern or southern hemisphere of the globe, such as I do. Even though most of the witchcraft traditions have adopted the wheel of the year with its eight Sabbats, I personally believe that the four quarter date celebrations (equinoxes and solstices) and the cross-quarter date celebrations (Imbolg, Beltaine, Lugnasad and Samhain) don't belong together. The reason why has to do with the problem of the seasonal weather and vegetation vs. the actual solar positions. We might be about to celebrate midsummer, or the first day of summer, but for us, the growing season started the first week of June. For others who live in the southern parts of the country, the growing season started almost a month earlier. So it would seem that the date is neither midsummer nor the first day of summer, but something altogether different.
Solstices have been marked and celebrated by ancient people perhaps even before the advent of the Neolithic era. Megalithic sites (such as Stonehenge and Avesbury) and ancient earthworks around the world seem to have been built with an ability to signify in some manner when these events exactly occurred, representing a certain uncanny knowledge of the seasons and their association with the shifting plane of the solar ecliptic. Later on, the equinoxes were also marked and measured, making these the annual four great celebrations. We modern pagans have continued this tradition, although we have added four more cross-quarter celebrations, which likely have no actual ancient provenance of being considered distinctly from the four solar celebrations; they were likely Celtic extensions of them.
Some years ago, as a way of rebelling against the obvious erroneous habit of putting all of the Sabbats together in one basket, as it were, and calling it the "Wheel of the Year," I decided to break out the quarter celebrations from the cross-quarter ones and look at them as a distinct cycle with their own myths. So instead of having one wheel, I now have two, which are slightly off center from each other. What this means is that the Equinoxes and Solstices represent the annual solar cycle, and the four cross-quarter Sabbats represent the vegetative seasonal changes. Therefore, when the Vernal Equinox occurs around March 21st, we know that even though it looks like winter outside, from a solar perspective, the days are growing longer and that spring is on the way. By the advent of Beltain, we can see nature catch up and start showing signs of spring, although it has been known to snow up here as late as early May. This same logic applies to the Autumn Equinox, which often still seems warm, even though the leaves have already begun to turn color in the early part of September. However, by Samhain, autumn is most definitely evident, and in fact, the snow pack will begin to accumulate by or after Thanksgiving. The winter and summer solstices may mark the apex of the solar disposition (either waxing or waning in regards to duration of sunlight), but the mid points of those seasons are better represented by the celebrations of Imbolg (February 1) and Lugnasad (August 1).
For the reasons stated above, I decided some years ago to work with two distinct wheels of the year, one Solar and the other Seasonal/Vegetative. I have pulled the myths associated with the wheel of the year into two different wheels, and have found the end result to be sensible and logical. There is the cycle of light and darkness, and there is the cycle of life and death. They may be Perhaps this is just a minor adjustment, or to some, it might be a big deal messing with one's tradition, but I believe that it helps me not only work with these seasonal celebrations, but also to be able to teach them to others. In adopting this double theme, I am able to make complete sense to my students when I tell them about it, and it's also easier to remember. As a practitioner of ritual magick and a pagan witch, I have found the eight Sabbats to be very useful, mystical and magickal events that act as seasonal milestones, forcing me to pay attention to the earth and what is happening in it. I have found that often one can be distracted by life's many tasks and crises, but it is very important to periodically re-focus on the earth itself, which helps one gain a more balanced perspective. There are also the mythic themes and their underlying mysteries for these Sabbats, but I will leave that for a future article.

According to most archaeologists, it is likely that the equinoxes and solstices, including the Spring Equinox, were celebrated as much as 12,000 years ago. These powerful days in the solar calendar were celebrated with ritual by the ancients. This idea of celebrating the Vernal Equinox, the date that marks the return of light to the world, with ritual and other festivities persists into the modern era.
THE ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF THE SPRING EQUINOX IN EUROPE
The power of light is still very much a part of many cultures around the world. However, most of the traditions associated with the return of warmth, at least as far as modern Wiccan practice is concerned, come from Europe. Across the European continent, this date is known as Ostara, Eostre's Day, Alban Eiber, Bacchanalia, Lady Day, Jack-o-the-Green Day, or simply as the Spring or Vernal Equinox.
Ostara was considered the Kalends of March in ancient Rome and was observed around March 25th, the approximate date of the Spring Equinox 2000 years ago. The old Roman calendar specified March as the beginning of the years. This was still accepted by much of Europe until the adoption of the new calendar in the Middle Ages.
Though the new calendar took the place of the old, and placed January at the beginning of the year, the Spring Equinox remained as the beginning of the astrological year. The first astrological sun sign is Aries, which begins at the Vernal Equinox.
The Festival of Janus was celebrated around the time of the Spring Equinox in ancient Rome. It is no coincidence that the first month of the new calendar was named after Janus. January is a silent homage to this Roman god, a god who is often associated with balance and renewal.
THE CELEBRATION OF THE VERNAL EQUINOX AROUND THE WORLD
Romans were not the only ones to celebrate the power of light in the ancient world. The Indian festival of Vaisakhi was celebrated on the new moon closest to the Spring Equinox, and was considered the first day of the year. The same was true of the festival of Kalacharka in Tibet. However, this festival is now on a fixed date: March 15th.
Other spring festivals celebrating similar themes to Ostara include:
* The Feast of Isis;
* The Feast of Cybele;
* The Festival of Astarte;
* The Feast of Inanna;
* The Festival of Athena;
* The Feast of Bacchus;
* The Feast of Libera;
* Summerfinding (the Scandinavian equivalent of Ostara); and
* Li Chum.
And, of course, the most recognizable form of Ostara, the holiday of Easter. It is certainly no coincidence that Easter occurs on the first Sunday following the first full moon after Ostara. And the two holidays share many similar symbols and practices (such as the decorating of eggs and the idea of an Easter or Ostara Bunny). There are many such variations revolving around the celebration of the return of spring.
The exact nature of each festival may vary. However, they all do have a common theme - the veneration of the return of light and life.

Sun-Chiron and Neptune in the 11th represent not only our national purpose which is wounded but more importantly the institutions of government such as the legislature, Congress and Senate. These are hopes which are opposed by the people (Moon in the 5th) the people who are still hypnotized by bread and circus or the demand for fun, entertainment, theaters, sports and social functions. Note that the economy through speculation and the Stock Exchange may have a slight boost after this eclipse at least until Venus turns retrograde. The heavy weighting of Aquarian planets could also mean
cooperation of energies which originate off world too.
Signs: Solar Wind Streaming Inside the Earth's magnetosphere and Comet Lulin
On the night of Feb. 4th as Mars made an ingress into Aquarius, the sun's magnetic field near Earth tipped south, opening a crack in Earth's magnetosphere and allowing solar wind to stream inside. Promptly, the skies over northern Russia turned green revealing the aurora at the top of the page. Also on Feb. 4th, a team of Italian astronomers witnessed "an intriguing phenomenon in Comet Lulin's tail." Team leader Ernesto Guido explained... While we were looking, part of the comet's plasma tail was torn away." Guido and colleagues believe the event was caused by a magnetic disturbance in the solar wind hitting the comet!

Recently since the Solar Eclipse a memo from the group WingMakers has surfaced concerning a mysterious archaeological site called the Ancient Arrow Project. This later became a property of the US Government ala the Roswell incident. "In 1972, in a remote section of northern New Mexico, a group of hikers discovered an unusual artifact and pictographs within an obscure canyon. An archeologist from the University of New Mexico analyzed the artifact and searched the area where it was discovered, but found no signs that a prehistoric culture had established any permanent site in the canyon." It gets much deeper as we find out: All but one of the artifacts could be dated to the 8th century AD. The exception, known as the "compass" artifact, appeared to be an unusual form of technology, and was found among more typical artifacts like pottery and simple tools.
