Cardinal Timothy Dolan defended inviting President Obama to the 2012 Al Smith Dinner.August 15th, 201203:22 PM ET

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Cardinal Timothy Dolan, America's most prominent Catholic official, defended on Wednesday the decision to invite President Barack Obama to a major Catholic dinner in the face of criticism from conservatives, saying the event is an opportunity for "friendship, civility and patriotism" amid a heated political campaign.
Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney also has accepted an invitation to the Al Smith Dinner, an annual Catholic fundraiser in New York with a rich history. Since Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy spoke at the event in 1960, it has been a regular stop for presidents and presidential candidates of both major parties.
Some conservative Catholic groups had asked Dolan - the archbishop of New York and the president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops - to reconsider the Obama invitation in light of what they say are attacks on religious freedom by the administration.
"As faithful Catholics, we cannot set aside our deeply-held differences and put in any place of honor those who continuously attack the tenets of our faith, and even our very ability to practice that faith," wrote President Father Shenan J. Boquet of Human Life International.
In the past, some presidential candidates have not been invited to the dinner. For example, in 2004, Cardinal Edward M. Egan did not invite then Democratic challenger John Kerry nor Republican President George W. Bush to the event. In 1996, President Clinton was not invited after Cardinal John O'Connor criticized him for vetoing a bill that would have outlawed some late-term abortions.
In a Wednesday blog post on the Archdiocese of New York's website, Dolan acknowledged the controversy, writing that he is "receiving stacks of mail protesting the invitation to President Obama (and by the way, even some objecting to the invitation to Governor Romney)."
But Dolan wrote that it is "better to invite than to ignore."
"The teaching of the Church... is that the posture of the Church towards culture, society, and government is that of engagement and dialogue," Dolan wrote in his blog post, saying it is "more effective to talk together than to yell from a distance, more productive to open a door than to shut one."
Bill Donohue, president of the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, which has been vocally opposed to many Obama administration initiatives, is defending Dolan's decision.
"If Catholics want to change the culture, they need to engage it," Donohue said in a statement. "It means we fraternize with those with whom we disagree with at city, state and federal functions. It does not mean that we are selling out."
Dolan was clear that his invitation of President Obama did not mean that the religious leader was changing his position on abortion, religious freedom and other issues that the Catholic Church has been at odds with the Obama administration over.
"In fact, one could make the case that anyone attending the dinner, even the two candidates, would, by the vibrant solidarity of the evening, be reminded that America is at her finest when people, free to exercise their religion, assemble on behalf of poor women and their babies, born and unborn, in a spirit of civility and respect," Dolan wrote.
Dolan has been vocal in his opposing Obama's stance on abortion, same-sex marriage and the Health and Human Services rule requiring employees to receive free contraception coverage through their health insurance, which he says violates religious freedom.
The Al Smith Dinner is held at the swanky Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan, where candidates are asked to give short speeches, which are typically comedic and self-deprecating. In 2008, Obama and then-Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain joked about themselves a few weeks before the November election.
"Maverick I can do," joked McCain about the admiration surrounding Obama, "but messiah is above my pay grade." Obama returned the favor and joked about the McCain campaign's attempt to brand Obama as a celebrity.
"[I] punched a paparazzi on my way out of Spago's," Obama joked. "I even spilled my soy chai latte."

Samhain is a time to honor the dead, its the last of the three harvest festivals before Winter. It's a time when the veil between worlds is thin, and communication with spirits and otherworldly beings is possible. It is also a time when we honor those who have gone before us like our ancestors, pets and friends. Samhain is a reminder that we are all connected with the cycles of life, that we too like the earth, will one day die.
This festival of the dead stems from an ancient Celtic holiday known as The Celtic New Year. Just like today, it is referred to as The Witches New Year. The ancient Celts would light bonfires and have feasts. It was also said that they would leave candles lit in their windows, to guide the souls of the dead. Samhain was also known to be a time to see and connect with the Faeries. The Morrigan, Celtic Goddess of sovereignty and fertility, was also known as a Faery Queen. In Celtic Ireland, she was said to lead her Faery court across the land on the night of Samhain.
On Samhain we honor the dark Goddesses such as Hekate, Greek Goddess of Crossroads, Cerridwen, Keeper of the Cauldron and The Morrigan, Celtic Goddess of sovereignty and fertility. We also honor our ancestors and the Faeries. Make a small Faery altar outside with natural items such as rocks, twigs, leaves, shells, flowers and acorns, or any other natural materials you have around where you live. Leave a small offering of milk and honey or butter outside on Samhain night to honor the Faeries.
On your altar, have fall colors such as orange, red, and yellow, have pictures or statues of the dark Goddess, pumpkins and/or apples, skulls, or other natural items such as acorns feathers and crystals. You can also have a small ancestor shrine. Samhain is also a great time for magic and divination. So have out your runes, scrying mirror or tarot cards for Samhain night.
I found a great recipe for Mulled Wine for Samhain, it's called "The Banshee" (which is a type of Celtic Faery) and I thought I thought I would share it here. I'm going to be making some myself over the Samhain weekend!
The Banshee Mulled Wine
INGREDIENTS:
* One bottle of red wine (suggestions: Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot or a Spanish red)
* One peeled and sliced orange (keep peel to add zest to taste into cooking pot)
* One peeled and sliced lemon (keep peel to add zest to taste in cooking pot)
* 1 tsp ground nutmeg
* 2 tsp ground ginger
* 5 whole cloves
* 3 cinnamon sticks
* 1/2 cup sugar (or honey can be substituted)
* 2/3 cup brandy or cognac
* 1/2 cup water
PREPARATION:
COMBINE ALL INGREDIENTS IN EITHER A LARGE POT OR A SLOW COOKER. GENTLY WARM THE INGREDIENTS ON LOW TO MEDIUM HEAT (AVOID BOILING), FOR 20-25 MINUTES. STIR OCCASIONALLY TO MAKE SURE THAT THE HONEY OR SUGAR HAS COMPLETELY DISSOLVED. WHEN THE WINE IS STEAMING AND THE INGREDIENTS HAVE BLENDED WELL IT IS READY TO SERVE. LADLE INTO MUGS (LEAVING SEASONINGS BEHIND) AND ENJOY!

Florida has been on quite a roll lately. Aren't we just the hubbub of activity these days?
In April of this year, our good friend and one of the pioneering pagan children's authors, Kyrja Withers, and her husband underwent severe threatening harassment, which began with people screaming expletives and honking as they drove by, progressing to a pellet gun being fired at her house, and then escalating to two acid bombs being tossed into her front yard.
This, of course, would cause any family extreme fear and stress about any further harassment and the level to which it might continue to escalate ~ all of this as a result of a misperception about our beliefs.
Yet, even though these events occurred because of misunderstandings by people uneducated regarding the tenets of paganism, what does a victim of such physically threatening prejudice do? Often times, pagans have had to move and suffer not only the stress of relocation, but sometimes having to surrender employment and selling property in unfavorable housing markets.
This time, however, champions appeared. Selena Fox with the Circle Sanctuary (a national activist in pagan and other concerns), in concert with Peter Dybing (now considered a local pagan hero here in Florida) along with the Lady Liberty League stepped in to educate and even offer protection in the Kyrja Withers matter.
As the Florida Pagan / Wiccan Community begins to recover from the impact of such physically threatening attacks against one of their beloved members, yet another issue steps in to raise concern in the Community surrounding Florida's newest pagan festival, the Lake Okeechobee Summer Solstice Pagan Festival, scheduled to take place over the Summer Solstice this year.
Despite all the advanced and careful planning, notifications, and advertising in the many, many months preceding the event, several Christian clergy have JUST NOW become aware of and are apparently now inflamed over the pending festival. Such disapproval, of course, was expressed in the media while displaying an amazing lack of understanding and education in this day and age regarding any aspect of paganism reverting to comments filled with words such as warlocks and warning against the impending evils of belly dancing and magic spells.
What the article fails to stress, however, is that this is the opinion of a FEW members of the local residents. It also fails to mention the positive benefits our various Florida festivals have had on local municipalities and townships including the positive financial impact on local businesses, some of whom actually cater specifically to pagans during the festivals. I guess making a positive impact on local communities is not as dramatic as hollering warlocks and magic spells. Oh, and let's not forget the evils of belly dancing - an art form which has been employed as a form of physical fitness in many Christian based exercise programs, by the way. At least they didn't mention the Flying Ointment because we all know about the "FLYING OINTMENT"!
We have faced prejudice before and this is nothing new. What is really important about this situation is the responsive presence by Selena Fox, Peter Dybing, and the Lady Liberty League offering once again to educate the uneducated - if they will listen to them - in a calm, professional, non-aggressive stance. They stand for an evolution in the Community, not only in Florida and the United States, but, hopefully, a worldwide movement to protect and defend our rights utilizing peace driven and education focused directives. It takes activists to do this - strong activists - to take a strong stance without enflaming either the Pagan & Wiccan Communities or the Christian community while offering the security of protection and assistance that Pagans and Wiccans need to preserve their rights.
So for these reasons, I salute Selena Fox, Peter Dybing, and the Lady Liberty League for being champions and guardians for the rights of Pagans and Wiccans not only in Florida, but elsewhere as well. May they remain as examples and inspiration for others in the Community.

ISAIAH 55: 6-13

AFTER A LONG TIME OF ABSENCE, I AM HERE... and I ask for your forgiveness, Gods and Goddesses, angels and demons, because I have left this blog so unattended for so long.
Life has been somewhat slow... and maybe the reasons I have not focused my energies on this blog were that I wanted to do some self-inspection and see what the heck was going on inside my soul that seemed to have me in a very sad, very depressed mood. It eventually has started to get clear... and I think that my next road trip will finally put an end to a circle of vices that I want to get rid of. Past lovers, past energies, bad auto-mojo, and clean my aura. I think I've been carrying baggage that does not belong to me for far too long. I want to leave it behind, maybe the Lord of the Sea can help me dispose of it.
Why do we do this? We cling on to things for so long that it comes a time when we can no longer carry them around... and even when we are well aware of it, we still do it. As if it was a curse, or something we are meant to do. This is one of the reasons - I think - that we cannot move on and be happy. Small resentments become big stone crosses, heartbreaks become bitter acid that eats away parts of our souls... True, it is not easy to forget about them and move on... but if we could only apply a small part of that effort (the effort we make to carry around all the bad energy, all the bad memories, the bad spirits) on to healing our souls, hearts and energies... a brighter world would be upon us. So I shall go to the sea, and leave my baggage behind... those who want me to do the same for them, I know you'll know how to find me.
I am thankfull for thy followers to this blog. I will try not to let it alone for so long anymore.
