THE NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH
When the Buddha gave his first sermon in the Deer Park, he began the 'Turning of the Dharma Wheel'. He chose the beautiful symbol of the wheel with its eight spokes to represent the Noble Eightfold Path. The Buddha's teaching goes round and round like a great wheel that never stops, leading to the central point of the wheel, the only point which is fixed, Nirvana. The eight spokes on the wheel represent the eight parts of the Noble Eightfold Path. Just as every spoke is needed for the wheel to keep turning, we need to follow each step of the path.
1. Right View. The right way to think about life is to see the world through the eyes of the Buddha... with wisdom and compassion.
2. Right Thought. We are what we think. Clear and kind thoughts build good, strong characters.
3. Right Speech. By speaking kind and helpful words, we are respected and trusted by everyone.
4. Right Conduct. No matter what we say, others know us from the way we behave. Before we criticize others, we should first see what we do ourselves.
5. Right Livelihood. This means choosing a job that does not hurt others. The Buddha said, "Do not earn your living by harming others. Do not seek happiness by making others unhappy."
6. Right Effort. A worthwhile life means doing our best at all times and having good will toward others. This also means not wasting effort on things that harm ourselves and others.
7. Right Mindfulness. This means being aware of our thoughts, words, and deeds.
8. Right Concentration. Focus on one thought or object at a time. By doing this, we can be quiet and attain true peace of mind.
Following the Noble Eightfold Path can be compared to cultivating a garden, but in Buddhism one cultivates one's wisdom. The mind is the ground and thoughts are seeds. Deeds are ways one cares for the garden. Our faults are weeds. Pulling them out is like weeding a garden. The harvest is real and lasting happiness.

BREAKING A WITCH'S PERSONAL POLICY TWICE CAN BE VIEWED AS A SERIOUS MISTAKE
If a witches partner breaks a promise or lies or neglects a commitment a second time then this can be viewed as a serious mistake. The witch should consider limiting the amount of potential harm her romantic partner can do. BREAKING A WITCH'S PERSONAL POLICY FOR THE THIRD TIME
If a romantic partner or friend lies to a witch three times, she is dealing with an evil liar. Lies and deceit are the linchpins of evil behavior and demonstrate a lack of conscience in the guilty person. This person is likely to betray the witch again and wreak further havoc. A witch has strong personal boundaries and will cut her losses and get out as soon as she can from such evil behavior. Three times is enough for a witch to learn what she is dealing with. Leaving is always difficult yet removing herself and preserving her self-respect is less costly than staying and trying to change someone. A witch does not force change on anyone she only welcomes it and receives it.
A three-timer should not be in a witch's personal life. A witch will not give her time, love, work, secrets, magic, money or affection to a three time loser. She knows that her valuable gifts will be utterly wasted on such an individual. After three deceitful and treacherous interactions a witch will protect herself first and foremost by removing herself from the path of evil. She will not accept abuse out of fear that she will be left for someone else. She values herself more than that and will not succumb to accepting poor behavior because she fears losing the person if she doesn't. She is not that weak.
A WITCH DOES NOT REDEEM THE IRREDEEMABLE
Second chances, third chances, and especially fourth chances, fifth chances and beyond, are saved only for the witch's flesh and blood family. And even then, this loved one must have a conscience in order to be forgiven. If the witch realizes she is dealing with a psychopath with no conscience, she will cut her losses.
A witch does not attempt to try and change people who do not wish to be changed. Her love and forgiveness are directed towards those that have a conscience. If they do not and are incapable of human empathy, it is not the witch's fault nor does it become her mission to change them. A witch's mission is her own life.
A witch will only pity those that deserve that pity, pity is not to be given to a liar, theif, cheater, abuser or sociopath. A witch will not be tricked into feeling that she owes somebody something. This has been the plea of evil doers for centuries. She does not owe anybody anything. She acts out of love and reciprocates acts of kindness to those who are kind themselves.
A goddess witch will always defend her psyche first and foremost. She will be loving and kind but not make herself available to be taken advantage of. A witch will surround herself with individuals who have a conscience and are able to love and have empathy as she can. Other people who lack a soul and represent evil will not be part of her inner circle.
A GODDESS RESPECTS HERSELF
If a witch has to break off with a person who has violated her three strike rule she will cut contact with that individual. She will live through the heart-ache and have no contact with evil that touches her. She will remove herself completely and disengage from the crazy dance of someone with evil intentions. A witch knows better than to interact with evil people. She knows that removing herself from the users treacherous reach and living well is the best revenge in that situation.

"For unto us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. As the National Day of Prayer Honorary Chair for 2014, I heard the familiar promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14 frequently invoked: "If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
Yet I wondered how many of us, including myself, have earnestly followed through in focused prayer? Are we just mouthing the words or are we truly humbling ourselves and praying and seeking God's face and repenting of our sin? I have felt deeply convicted that it's time for you and me to stop talking. It's time to pray. And repent.
Yet the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14, that is often quoted as applying to American believers, was originally given to King Solomon to claim on behalf of Jerusalem... Israel. So 3,000 years after that promise was first given, as the Islamic extremists tighten their noose around His Land, as terrorists bombard Israel with rockets, as enemies threaten God's people with annihilation, once again it's time to stop talking and to start praying. Not just for our people and our land, but for Jerusalem and all that she symbolizes: His Land, His people.
Actually, in Psalm 122:6-7, we are commanded, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels." Yet as I have attempted to obey, I have sensed my faith to believe God for the answer has been small. Because peace treaties are continually broken. Negotiations beween enemies keep unraveling. No sooner is a cessation in hostilities declared than it is shattered by another missile strike.
And then it has dawned on me. There will be no permanent peace and safety for Jerusalem until the Prince of Peace Himself comes to establish His reign on earth. So in effect, when I pray for the peace of Jerusalem, what I am really praying for is not the terms of a treaty. I'm not praying for an independent Palestinian state or the Muslims' recognition of Israel's right to exist. What I'm really praying for is the return of Jesus. Yeshua. Israel's Messiah. The Prince of Peace.
So I'm on my knees, praying for the peace of Jerusalem. Even so, come Lord Jesus.

The exact origin of this practice has escaped me. Then again, I'm not one to question the motivation behind seemingly-odd habits. Coffin nails are traditionally used in hexing and cursing, but don't let that scare you away. While they do have a lot of negative associated with them, they are powerful tools to be used in protection against spiritual forces and against people who have more power than yourself.
Coffin nails are typically extracted from dug up coffins. This to me doesn't seem moral and certainly defies my personal code of don't-disturb-the-dead. There is a specific problem in ordering coffin nails online in that you don't know exactly where they came from, and cleansing these things can be a major pain in the ass. Thus, I suggest to make your own, simple enough.
The ideal time to start is on a new moon in Scorpio, but because this can only happen once or (rarely) twice a year, any new moon will do. Just be aware of what qualities this may imbue your coffin nails with. Starting with a new moon in Aries will give your nails a warrior's edge, making them incredibly powerful, yet somewhat unpredictable. Awareness to what you're doing can save you some messy consequences.
Starting on the first night of a new moon, create a poppet of some sort to serve as a body. I chose to bind wicker together in a humanoid form and name it "body." Tell this poppet firmly your intentions are purely to create coffin nails and that it is merely serving as a body to rot, ultimately. Then drive your choice of nails (these can be any type of metal, just be aware of the metal's energy polarity) inside the poppet. I then chose to wrap and mummify my wicker figure in cheese cloth, pinning the cloth down with the nails as I went. This should be very solemn, as a mortician may dress a corpse. As you place the nails inside, feel them pinning the energies inside. You may choose to make your own little coffin here.
Take your little body outside to a plot of earth which you can consecrate as burial earth. This is a very personal preference to do; the goal is to create a place of earth in which your replacement body can decay. Then hold a small burial ceremony for the body and cover it up, leaving it to sit silent in peace.
At the full moon, imbue water beneath the full moon and pour it over the burial spot. This is a crucial time to also create a protective barrier around the buried poppet, so as to not attract power-seeking spirits.
At the next new moon, after a full lunar cycle (you may leave them buried for as many cycles as you so wish), dig up the body, remove the nails, and burn the poppet.
Now that you have these coffin nails, the uses are endless. Yeah, sure, you can try hexing or cursing someone (but really, is that the best use of your time? The consequences double back by three and karma stabs your soul with her sword. Just don't do it, 'cause I aint gonna teach you how.) Instead, use these for protection in spiritual communication. The very sight of one of these coffin nails can frighten a spirit away in a post-mortem heartbeat. There's nothing more frightening to a ghost than the imagine of an object meant to seal it in its grave. You can create protective barriers against spirits with these, just dip the tip of the nail into water of the full moon or
Likewise, you can also use these nails to help avoid people you don't want to deal with. Simply hold the nail and imagine the individual you're trying to avoid trapped in a box (a coffin if you will), completely unable to interact with you. Then place the coffin nail (or any number of them) atop a piece of parchment with the individual's name or on the individual's photograph. (Do not stab the paper; this is a form of hexing.) I suggest only using this trick when absolutely necessary, for two main reasons. First of all, passive aggression makes a weakened witch. Without control in the physical world, how can one begin to work with the metaphysical energies of the world? Only use this as a last resort. A few years ago, a friend of mine needed protection against her crazed father (who only had minimal custody over her.) He threatened to press for full custody if she didn't do everything he demanded. I told her how to use the nails, and she performed the ritual. The family dinner he coerced her into he had to cancel when my friend's step-sister suddenly got pink eye. The father also stopped calling her for quite a while, but almost as soon as she removed the coffin nail from the piece of name paper, his attacks began again.
Take note that though the intended outcome did manifest, there were a few innocent individuals harmed in the process. This brings me to my second warning with coffin nails: They are incredibly unpredictable, especially those started beneath an Aries or Gemini moon. You cannot control how the energies manipulate the physical plain; you may end up giving someone an illness. And the three fold law and karma don't really care if you meant to do something intentionally. The three-fold will still target the magick's origin, and Karma will punish you for carelessness.
Let me reiterate. Do not use coffin nails against living people unless you're prepared for the consequences. Be careful and use wisely, if you so choose to experiment with these.

In further investigation, I have found a ritual in the Pagan Birthing process that is even closer to the connection with the Christian christening. After birth, the parents invite their friends and family to a gathering, not to name the baby, but this time to bless the baby. It is made specifically clear throughout the sources of my research that the blessings are not intended to bind a child within the Pagan religion. Many of the followers of Paganism were affected greatly by their parent's decisions to force their own religion upon them. The parent's of the new Pagan child do not intend to force their child into their own religion. This aspect surprised me. I was very impressed with the understanding that the parents' had for their own child's future beliefs.
The process of the blessing rituals begins with the baby being presented with the four elements of nature. Then, the godparents of the child pledge that they will protect the child for as long as they live, making sure to guide them in the right direction of life. The child is brought to a natural place of worship, such as a grove or the base of a tree. The baby's name is spoken to the four sides of the Earth and people present the child with gifts and affection.
A change could definitely result from learning about this process. In seeing the understanding of the parents towards their child's beliefs, a person may be inspired to remain open. It is a common practice in many religions that whatever religion a parent holds, is passed down to their child. If more people accepted the Pagan way of respected their child's life and goals, people would not grow up feeling suffocated by the pressures around them. I can personally say that this practice managed to alter my beliefs. I had never thought about my future children growing up to practice a different religion than myself. However, through this discovery, I understood that each individual should be treated with freedom in his or her opinions. What I hadn't thought of, which the Pagan beliefs changed, was that my future child will be their own person, and will not need to adhere to my personal beliefs.

ETHNIC RELIGION AND RELIGIOUS HATRED
These various Odin groups make a distinction between a universal religion and an ethnic or "folkish" faith. All of the major world religions are considered universal because they are meant for all people. The ethnic religion is understood as existing only for a racial or cultural group. In this context Christianity is seen as the great enemy of the white Northern peoples since they were converted by its missionaries to an alien religion not in keeping with the soul of the Northern European. Michael Moynihan in his book, "Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground", subtly implies that the many church burnings in Norway by either band members or fans of black metal was a subconscious explosion of the white youths need to return to the old heathen religions. He documents how many of these members turned from satanic rock to the Norse or Odin religious symbols in their music and religious outlook. One explanation that Moynihan offers is Jungian and builds on a theory of racial archetypes within the cultural subconscious.6 So along side the racial problem in these groups is the glaring problem of religious hatred.
There are several degrees of extremism among such pagan groups on the Internet. The most extreme and the racist ones are The Pagan Front and The Heathen Front. Another grouping made up of such groups as Asatru Free Assembly, Asatru Folk Assembly and Odinic Rite, do not consider themselves racist and have nothing to do with Hitler or Nazism. (Interestingly, the latter groups see Hitler and Nazism as manifestly Christian, and therefore atrocious, while Pagan Front and Heathen Front see Hitler and Nazism as anti-Christian and therefore an admirable and helpful part of their movement. They all quote Hitler to prove their point!)
While Steve McNallen of Asatru Folk Assembly claims not to be racist, some of his articles promote racism. In an article entitled "Wotan vs. Tezcatlipoca," McNallen attempts to show that a kind of spiritual ethnic war is developing in California between the gods of the Hispanic culture and the European culture.
He sees the old Aztec and Mayan gods pushing for territory in California and writes, "If California and the American Southwest are to be cultural battlegrounds, who better to lead the European-American counterattack against Tonatzin and Tezcatlipoca than our own Gods of the North." While not suggesting violence as the answer, he sees cultural interests such as language and festivals as indicators of aggression rather than celebrations of ethnic diversity in a democracy. 8
The Heathen Front, unlike the Pagan Front, does not major in Black Metal music. Not unlike Nazi culture, they value ethnic folk music and the classical music of Richard Wagner.7 However, the founder of the Norwegian Heathen Front, musician Varg Vikernes, is a young man serving a prison term in Norway for murder and church burnings. Before his imprisonment he was a part of the Black Metal and Satanic Music scene in Norway. He is also one of the more important subjects in Moynihan's book "Lords of Chaos".
Moynihan explains that Vikernes is an embarrassment to the neo-heathen groups because of his "extreme and bloody interpretation of indigenous Norse religion." Moynihan also writes, "when contemporary figures sought to revive the old religion of Northern Europe, they had not intended to bring back uncontrollable barbarism and lawlessness with it."9
Several other interests connect these groups to the pagan worldview and to grass roots movements in general. One interest is the tribal unit versus globalism. Since the tribe is seen as the most important unit of society in the Odin communities, neither nation states, world organizations, nor any form of global movement are accepted as helpful to the white European soul. Another interest is the environment. They affirm environmental concerns and have statements at their websites about environmental issues as they see them.
The Heathen Front offers an essay on Savitri Devi. She was a vegetarian and advocate for animal rights. Her book, "Impeachment of Man", is an attack on Christianity, Judaism and Islam and a plea for the rights of animals. A European, she lived in India during World War II, aligning herself with the Nazi Party and the radical India Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). She later developed connections to George Lincoln Rockwell the founder of the American Nazi Party. 10
The Heathen Front also states:
"Judeo-christian [sic] morals prevent mother Jord from doing her work, so we are keeping people alive that were sacrificed by nature to save those fit for survival. More people means [sic] more pollution, and today we have reached too high a level of population/pollution. The earth can no longer re-generate. Slowly we are killing everyone to help just a few. If you look upon this matter with a clear vision, rather than one blurred with Judeo-Christian or humanist values, you will understand this fully as well."11
The religious hatred of these various groups is one of the more troubling aspects of the movement. On Pagan Front's website various band's sites are promoted. One site has two crosses inverted with Christ still hanging there as an entryway. Varg Vikernes in an article denouncing "Christian Identity," (a racist movement claiming to be Christian), calls Christianity the "most extreme Jewish consequence."
Later in the article, he states, "It were [sic] Christians who condemned everything Aryan to Hell forever! It was Christianity who made our Aryan race coward and degenerate! Christianity has been the origin of everything evil in Europe since it arrived here!"12 In an article about ecology, the writer states, "Judeo-Christianity is the irreligious masquerading as the religious. It is a life hating death cult, that hates the earth with its races, its tribes and its wide biological variety - its underlying holiness."13
A BIBLICAL RESPONSE: GOD'S BLESSING FROM TRIBE TO MESSIAH TO THE NATIONS
Humanly speaking, the Judeo-Christian world will cringe at this hatefulness, and rightfully so. Yet, prayerfully, there is another picture of the individuals in these groups. Born into a Western "Christian" culture where most people are biblically illiterate and where materialistic secularism has almost totally engulfed society, they generally know nothing of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They equate "Christian" with the emptiness of secular society. Racists neo-pagans experience a society filled with barren hype, little meaning and violence. They believe that within their pagan racial beliefs they have returned home: to nature and to the tribe.
But such groups have the foundation for meaning inverted. It begins not with humanity, not with the alleged racial archetypes of human consciousness, but with the compassionate Father, the true Creator of all. And while the story of redemption, which gives meaning, begins with a small Near Eastern tribe, it is proclaimed and pushed forward toward all humanity; it is expanded as God speaks through the voice of the prophets of that tribe.
God's promises came to Abraham the father of that tribe, "and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed" (Gen. 12:3b). God chose that small family to bring a blessing on all the peoples of earth. The Hebrew prophets reminded the nation, who grew from that particular family, of God's desire for redemption and blessings on all people. Israel will be "a light of the nations." God's house, "will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples." God will bring the foreigner, those who are not Israel, "and make them joyful in My house of prayer" (Isa. 49:6b; 56:7).
God would do this through the coming Messiah who would be a light to the Gentiles: "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them" (Isa. 9:2 with Luke 2:32). Finally, because of the Messiah's death on a cross and His resurrection, the beautiful song of the elders can be sung:
"by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and people and nation; you have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God and they will reign on earth" (Rev. 5:9, 10b).
God starts with the small, the particular, and the isolated. He moves to embrace all in His redemption. The men and women who find inspiration in an empty snowy wood, lofty mountain peaks, tales of brave warriors and mythic sagas, will in the end find only emptiness and horror if they miss the God who created not only the snowy woods, but also all the tribes of the earth.
Moynihan's remark about "uncontrollable barbarism and lawlessness" being an unintentional result of a revival of Northern European Paganism, is simply one case in point. Jesus Christ is the only revelation of God; any other leads to destruction. Unredeemed humanity moves toward the horror and corruption of nightmares. All that is good and promising, "the weight of glory" as C.S. Lewis called it, comes from Jesus Christ.

Selamat Balik! We return with more news! First, a belated Happy New Galactic Year to everyone! This is the year of 10 Caban, a galactic year that is mostly reserved for inner and outer discovery. It prompts you to learn more about who you really are and to look at your native abilities in a new light, and it is these energies that are now becoming most prevalent in your reality. You are embarking on a period of manifestation and discovery about what you think Life is all about and hence, what kind of world you wish to live in. The coming prosperity and new governance are to kick-start this process of self-exploration. However, what you discover about yourselves at first will merely afford you glimpses of the magnificent truth of your real Inner Self. As Spirit begins this unveiling with you, you will learn how your outer world reflects and stimulates the growing expansion of your inner experience. The new year of 10 Caban will indeed be loaded with all kinds of new and stimulating adventures. Just to begin with, personal debt will end and you will be thrown into a world of prosperity. You will become able to meaningfully interact with your new governance, which will sincerely seek your input and truly wish to serve you. This, of itself, will be a big adjustment!
All across your globe, much is coming into being. Those who have been working in secret to bring about new governance have won a series of legal battles, opening the way to replace your corrupt regimes with new governance charged with restoring people-oriented policies. As you know to your cost, these dark coalitions imposed illegal amounts of taxation and debt to control and enervate you, and the purpose of the new governance is to rectify this unlawfulness and free you from decades of debt slavery. There is to be a new hard-currency system which will end the manipulation and oppression of a fiat-currency system. This fiscal 'dry-rot' will be transitioned rapidly to global currencies that are backed by precious metals, and your new governance is to support and promote not only the hard-currency system but also the beneficial social programs which accompany it. As these nuts-and-bolts aspects roll out, your rapid inner growth will enable you to partner meaningfully with government, to formulate and then oversee the changes you wish to see in your quickly transitioning world.
You are entering upon a period of great learning. In galactic societies each one is an honored and treasured individual. Each is a unique and irreplaceable piece of the whole, and this is an identity that you will need to adapt to. Government does not stand above the people; rather, it is an instrument to be used to uphold and facilitate the welfare of each person. Admiralty Law (the law of the conqueror), which prevails at present, will give way to Common Law, which comes from the people. Common Law is made up of those practices and traditions which have proved, over time, to work well among people, and this is what gives those appointed to authority a moral compass to guide their deliberations and actions. As this conceptual changeover takes place, your role is to observe your new administration in action and then ensure that it keeps to the direction you give it. You possess a divine standing as a person of consequence. You are a sovereign entity who is part of a highly motivated collective, and as such you have a responsibility to ensure that resolutions agreeable to all are reached. Your saying, "Government is not a spectator sport" is most fitting here.
Involvement in these changes will furnish your growing consciousness with many areas of hands-on education. You will discover a true, compassionate morality that is to be wholly indiscriminate. You will find how important it is to maintain the joy and wonder of your own uniquely evolving society; also, that governing yourselves is a truly divine operation of great complexity, requiring the informed participation of, or supervision by, each member. The preservation of your sovereign rights and ensuring that Common Law is properly administered is a most sacred task which you will have much more time for once prosperity gives your lives stability and releases your potential. Bear in mind that your levels of consciousness will be rising rapidly and your outlooks and perceptions will change greatly. You will also have available to you Beings from different lineages who have come to help you during this massive transition, as many of you may become a bit confused or upset by how much is changing. So here it is Moon Day (Monday) and after a two day spree with enthusiastic and restless Sagittarius we come back to the ground with a thump with the moon moving into the Cardinal Earth sign of Capricorn. This moon transit will bring us the feelings of being concerned with responsibilities, issues regarding security, the time to care of business and a time intensify your powers of concentration. After Saguttarius expansiveness, now we feel contracton and realize that it is time to pay attention to our needs for security, duties, obligations, drives and ambitions. This is a good time for setting and achieving goals, 'going for it' materially because we will find ourselves feeling persistent and ambitious.

Exciting news from Bulgaria today:
"Parts of St. John the Baptist's relics might have been discovered during archaeological excavations in Bulgaria's southern Black Sea town of Sozopol, report Bulgarian media. Archaeologists investigating the Sv. Ivan (St. John) island off Sozopol have found an exquisite reliquary - a relic urn - built in the altar of an ancient church bearing the name of St. John the Baptist. The reliquary has the shape of a sarcophagus and is dated end of 4th - beginning of 5th c. AD. It was discovered by the team of Prof. Kazimir Popkonstantinov. The church's name, as well as the fact that it had a special emperor's statute issued, has hinted to archeologists that it might actually contain St. John's relics. The urn is expected to be opened Sunday." more at link

"One day after the unique discovery of an ancient marble reliquary, thought to contain the relics of St John the Baptist that archaeologists made on the island of St John near Sozopol, today the team has run into another finding. A mysterious stone box was unearthed from the same niche which contained the reliquary. The box looks like a match box but is a bit larger. There are two inscriptions in Greek on it. The one reads: My Lord, help your servant, Toma and the other inscription, found on the other side of the box reads: Saint John. The stone container is full of soil and stirred archeologists in complicated reflections. "What we have discovered is strange and inexplicable. For now we do not know what it is, we are not sure about its purpose either. We can only guess that the stone box is a part of the reliquary..." source
Look a a map: I was struck by the dates and by the rapidity that Christianity had spread.This spread is a miracle in itself. The changed lives resulting from its taking hold in cultures as divergent as Israel, Turkey, and the Baltics is also a miracle. It is a testament to the truth inherent in the Gospel, and the miracle of His death for our sins, the supreme miracle.
I am always surprised at people who deny Christianity's factual beginnings, proved in history, by likening it to fables. Fables don't spread so far and so fast. Fables don't stick, 2000 years later.

In the previous post (Spirit of Generosity and Generosity of Spirit), I discussed what both ritual leader and participant have to bring to a public ritual in order for it to be successful. Here, I'd like to get into the nitty-gritty of what it takes to write and lead a successful, unconventional public Pagan ritual. Some of this will apply to a standard Wiccan-style public ritual, and will certainly apply to non-Wiccan public rituals, but I am most interested in the presentation of experimental Pagan rituals.
Give advance notice.
Whenever possible, tell your participants a little bit about what to expect before you start. If there's an email or message board post about your event, include a note about what tradition or religion you are from, maybe with a link to a website with some basic information. If your ritual isn't from an established and recognized tradition, you may just want to note that you will be leading an unconventional ritual.
Face it: your potential participants are mostly Wiccans or Wiccan-influenced. Even those who don't identify as Wiccan will probably have a basic understanding of that ritual structure. By all means, conduct your ritual according to your own tradition - as un-Wiccan-like as it might be - but if you assume knowledge of Wicca when choosing what to explain and what not to explain, you will be able to pick your talking points with more accuracy.
If your ritual includes anything that could be controversial - political magic, nudity, mind altering substances, blood magic, sex magic - you absolutely must let people know before you start, and preferably before they arrive. You would think this would go without saying, but I have been in a circle where there was an undisclosed skyclad requirement, and one where participants were asked to make a voluntary blood sacrifice, and I know how upset some of the participants were in both cases. By the way, both rituals were led by elders of the community.
Even with advanced notification and FAQ links, there may be some things you'll want to explain to the group. If you can work the explanations into the ritual in a way that feels smooth and unforced, that is best, but sometimes it just can't be done. Rather than doing the "professor thing" of lecturing while walking back and forth or around and around during the ritual, just get everyone gathered up and give the most basic explanation possible of what's going to happen. I highly recommend writing this in advance and reading it off the paper if you have to; you want to be as concise as possible, explaining only what you absolutely have to as clearly as you can. Winging it will often lead to extraneous points obfuscating the important parts.
Show, don't tell.
The participants will be looking to you to model what is expected of them. Rather than explain that in your tradition, you call the element of spirit while all looking up, just do it. Make sure anyone else who is running the ritual with you knows what to do, or tell a few people in advance, but then just let it happen. A few people may bow their heads instead, in keeping with their own tradition, but most will follow your lead.
Do a walk and talk.
Have you ever noticed how TV shows deal with long exposition? When something absolutely has to be explained and cannot be shown, a show will often have the characters on the move, walking and talking down a hall or a street. Or the talking will be split between several characters, instead of a monologue. This helps the audience stay engaged. Similarly, in a ritual, instead of having your priest or priestess drone out all explanations and directions while standing in the centre or at the altar, split it up between several people and move it around. I like having each of the quarter callers take a piece of the explanation in turn, so the participants' attention ends up flowing around the circle.
Commit to the performance.
You will quickly lose the attention of your participants if you mumble. If you are doing a very unconventional ritual, it is especially important that everyone be able to see and hear what's going on at every stage. Ideally, your participants have come to your ritual with open minds and generous spirits, but you will quickly use up their good will if they can't hear you.
I believe in practising ahead of time. Even if you don't require memorization, everyone who is helping you put on the ritual should be familiar with what's going to happen and should know their cues. Make sure everyone reads or recites their lines out loud a few times before starting so they have a good flow to the words. For bigger and more elaborate rituals, do the ritual with a smaller group in advance - a dress rehearsal of sorts.
Make it work.
A public ritual is an act of generosity and compromise. Sometimes, something that works in your small group ritual setting will not work in a public or very large ritual. For example, in my circle, we all bring our own goblets for sharing drink, but asking 300 people to remember to bring their own goblets is impractical. Be prepared to modify how you do things to make the best ritual experience for everyone.
There are some common things to look out for when modifying or writing a ritual for a large group. We will talk about these more in a future post, but, as an example, look for long pauses where nothing happens for the majority of participants. Food and drink sharing is a place where this happens a lot; as the one goblet is being passed around, everyone else stands and waits. Consider using several goblets and/or adding a chant to break that up. Look at your ritual with the eye of a director putting on a play. You cannot provide a spiritual experience to a group if your performance basics aren't met, so I definitely recommend compromising on your religion's usual traditions in order to better serve the group.
Serve the ritual.
Some things cannot, and should not, be compromised. Even though they might be controversial or less than optimal for performing, if something is fundamental to the ritual, than do it. Just use this rule thoughtfully; plenty of things we do in rituals aren't fundamental and can be modified, they just usually aren't. As you write or edit every part of the ritual, ask yourself: "How will this perform? Will it be clearly heard, seen, and understood? Is there a spiritual or religious reason why this has to be done this way?"
In small groups, some things we always do because they are religiously important (for example, we may always call the Goddess before the God for religious reasons), and some things we always do because the routine - the ritual of it - helps get the group into the right mindset because of the repetition (for example, calling each quarter from the edge of the circle, facing outwards, may be just how things are done in your tradition). The latter things can be changed; your large diverse group does not have the repetition to call on, so it is more important to serve the needs of the group than to follow the exact requirements of your usual ritual structure. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the two, though. Try asking yourself: "What belief does this action serve?" If you don't have an answer, you may be able to compromise on that part of the ritual.
There is an art to putting on public rituals, and it can take practice. I recommend attending as many public and semi-public rituals for as many different Pagan traditions as possible and see what works and what doesn't for you, and what does and doesn't for the other participants. Then, practice with smaller groups - your coven, grove, or other usual group with some guests - before going to big groups of strangers. But at some point, if you want to conduct public rituals, you will just have to take the plunge and do it.
