TRIBULATION'S PURPOSE VS. THE CHURCH'S NATURE
Selah >> Prophecy
A Bible Study by Jack Kelley
"Therefore keep watch because you do not know the day or the hour." (MATT. 25:13)
Those who shy away from the study of prophecy are fond of quoting this verse as their reason for it. But earlier in the same passage, the Lord had admonished all who read His words of prophecy to understand them. (MATT 24:15) In addition the Apostle Paul wrote that the events leading up to the end of the age should not take believers by surprise (1 THES. 5:4) implying that we should be familiar with them.
Since the Bible cannot contradict itself, these passages must have been aimed at different audiences. And sure enough, a closer look reveals that both the implied timing and the intended audience of the two Matthew passages are different. In MATT 25:13 the Lord is only speaking to people remaining on Earth at His Second Coming, while in MATT. 24:15 he included everyone who would ever read the passage. Of course in 1 THES 5:4 Paul is addressing the church.
What both the Lord (MATT.24:15) and Paul (1 THES. 5:4) are saying is that while we won't know the exact timing of things, we should understand the sequence of events leading up to the Day of the Lord. And perhaps no event in the sequence is more controversial than the Rapture of the Church, especially as it relates to the Great Tribulation.
It seems to me that the first thing we should do in trying to obey the Lord's commandment to understand all this is to clarify two things:
One, the purpose of the Great Tribulation, and
Two, the nature of the Church
THE PURPOSE OF THE GREAT TRIBULATION
The phrase Great Tribulation makes reference to a specific event, not a general condition. While the Lord warned the disciples that they and we would experience tribulation as a general condition in this world (JOHN 16:33), He clearly identified the Great Tribulation as having a specific beginning and ending. It will begin when the abomination that causes desolation predicted by Daniel is erected in the Temple (in the middle of the last 7 years of history) and will end just prior to the Lord's return, three and one half years later. (DANIEL 9:24-27 no longer will foreigners enslave them. Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them."
" 'So do not fear, O Jacob my servant; do not be dismayed, O Israel,' declares the LORD. 'I will surely save you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and security, and no one will make him afraid. "
"I am with you and will save you,'declares the LORD. 'Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.'"
In this passage the event is foretold, its purpose explained, and the timing is made clear. Let's take the timing first. According to verse 3 it will take place after Israel is re-gathered in the land, and verse 9 says it will result in David becoming their King again, a Messianic reference.
There have been two re-gatherings since the passage was written, but the first, beginning in 535 BC, didn't result in David becoming their King. In fact, to this day they have had no legitimate king at all since about 600 BC. Neither were all the nations completely destroyed then.
The second re-gathering began in 1948 AD and continues to this day. Though the population of Israel keeps growing, so do the Jewish populations of all the nations to which the Jews have been scattered, and there are still more Jews outside Israel than there are in the land. All that will soon change as the Lord calls all His people to return to their Promised Land following His victory in the Battle foretold by Ezekiel. (EZEK.39:28)
Now for its purpose. "Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished." (JERE. 30:11) The idea is that Israel has to be purified to receive their coming King, and the nations who rejected the King and persecuted His people must be destroyed.
So the purpose of the Great Tribulation is twofold; discipline (purify) the people of Israel so they'll be prepared for the coming Messiah, and completely destroy the nations to which they had been scattered and who have rejected Him.
THE NATURE OF THE CHURCH
According to Paul's Letter to the Ephesians, the church is nothing less than a new race of mankind, coming from among both Jew and Gentile but sharing a destiny with neither. (EPHE. 2:15-16)
The problem had always been that God never could dwell in the midst of His creation. Our sins always eventually drove Him away. At the cross, He reconciled all things to himself, things in heaven and on earth (COL 1:19-20). This meant that He was now at peace with His creation for the first time since the Fall of Man. He accomplished this by paying the price for all the sin of mankind. Now, for anyone who would accept it, a full pardon for behavior past, present and future was available, free for the asking.
YOU'RE A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT
Accepting this pardon qualifies any person, young or old, Jew or Gentile, good or bad, to become a new creation (2 COR 5:17). When we do it permits God to look upon us as if we are without sin altogether; and in fact as if we had never sinned to begin with. It also requires the division of mankind into three groups: Jew, Gentile and Church. (1 COR. 10:32)
It's critical that we understand God's perspective in this because it's way different from ours. To Him, the church is without sin, holy and blameless, and has been since the cross. Whatever sins we as individuals have committed (or will commit) have been forgiven and forgotten. It's as if they never happened (EPHE 1:4-8). At the cross, the church became as pure and holy as God Himself (2 COR 5:21), having been made perfect forever. (HEBR. 10:14) Finally God has a people with whom He can live in peace. Because the Man from heaven agreed to become outfitted for earth, men from earth can now be outfitted for heaven.
The nature of the Church is to be as though sinless. As Paul said we're like a chaste virgin (2 COR. 11:2), without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, holy and blameless. (EPHES. 5:27) We've been washed from our sins in the Lord's own blood (REV. 1:5).
(I have recently noticed a resurgence of the view that not all Christians will inherit eternal life with the Lord, but only those judged worthy by their works. This view holds that while saved, some born again believers will actually share the destiny of unbelievers, being cast into the outer darkness and away from the presence of God forever. Proponents of this view demonstrate a remarkable ignorance of New Testament Theology as summarized in the verses I've cited here.)
WHAT'S THE POINT?
First, not needing purification, no purpose is fulfilled by having the Church endure the Great Tribulation. And even if purification was needed, how could the suffering of one generation of believers serve to purify all the generations of believers who have preceded us?
In Israel's case the generations since the cross are lost, having rejected their Messiah. The last generation's discipline is intended to finally bring them to that realization and to open their eyes and hearts to Jesus so that a remnant of God's people can be preserved. (ZECH. 12:10-13)
But all the generations of the Church have died in hope of spending eternity with the Lord as the Bible promised them. Is it only ours who will receive this promise and then only after sharing in Israel's purification? Of course not.
Second, the focus of the Great Tribulation is Jewish and God's focus seems to be either Israel or the church, never both. (This was explained by James in ACTS 15:12-18 and by Paul in ROMANS 11:25-27.) If you take the view, as I do, that the Battle of EZEKIEL 38 occurs before the Great Tribulation, and realize that one outcome of that battle is to turn Israel back to God, (EZE 39:28-29) then you know the church's days on Earth have to end at the same time. This is what makes the fact that Israel exists again an important sign that the end is near.
IN SUMMARY
Of course the Scriptures promise that the church won't be present on Earth for the Great Tribulation and we've covered them in detail in other studies on the Rapture.
My intent in this study is not to review them but rather to achieve the following:
1. to demonstrate that the purpose of the Great Tribulation is to discipline Israel and completely destroy the Nations, and
2. to show that the Church has no need for purification or discipline, and therefore our presence here during that period would be in direct opposition to our nature as viewed by God.
Because of this God has promised to remove the Church well before the Great Tribulation begins. In 1 THES 1:10 and 5:9 Paul said first that the Church will be rescued from God's wrath and then that the church was not appointed to suffer wrath. By REV 6 His wrath will have arrived. The Greek preposition translated from in 1 THES 1:10, means from the time, place or any relation to the event. The Church will be rescued from the time, place, or any relation to God's wrath. This promise had first been made over 750 years earlier in ISAIAH 26:20 and it's still good today. Selah 07-12-08

Russell is NOT buried under a pyramid. The pyramid was built in the middle of the cemetery.
The pyramid was erected after his death by J.A. Bohnet a Bible Student. The monument was built in the middle of the WTS plot in the cemetery. It was to be a marker of sorts for the Bible House family (those who worked at the headquarters in Pa). The pyramid contains a cross, crown and wreath symbol, scripture quotes, an open book which has names of Bible Students who died and were buried in the cemetery
Russell and the early Bible Students thought that God had directed the building of the Great pyramid by Hebrews as a secondary way to confirm the Bible's chronology.
This was not a belief that the Bible Students made up, but was commonly taught in many mainstream Churches which they had just come out of. It took them time to discern what was true and what was myth. In the 1800s some religious scholars felt that the Great Pyramid was built by the Hebrews under God's direction. They believed that biblical texts such as Isa 19:19-20 foretold that the Pyramid contained clues to the interpretation of Biblical prophecies that would be understood in the end times.
BUT WITNESSES CORRECTED THEIR WRONG UNDERSTANDINGS WHILE OTHER RELIGIONS CONTINUE TO BELIEVE OBVIOUS MYTHS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CROSS AND HOLIDAYS. And there are still theologians and accepted members of mainstream churches who still teach Pyramidology, numerology, and mix "New Age" metaphysics with no repercussions from their respective organizations.
JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES HAVE NEVER HIDDEN THE FACT THAT THEY HAD INCORRECT BELIEFS DUE TO IGNORANCE, BUT WE REGULARLY STUDY OUR HISTORY. But, the Bible shows that God allows his servants to gradually understand (Pro. 4:18; Jn 16:12) just as the prophets and Apostles had to gradually learn and change their understandings (Dan. 12:8, 9; 1 Pet. 1:10-12; Acts 1:6, 7; 1 Cor. 13:9-12).
So, concern with past beliefs which were incorrect is a waste of time and distracts from the real issue. That is, a FAILURE to correct false doctrine or actions when presented with solid evidence would be proof that a religion or an individual is not God's organization or a Christian.
It is hypocritical and it's illogical to address past beliefs which have been changed in order to cast doubt on current teachings of any religion. What someone taught years ago has no bearing on the accuracy of what is taught now.
Rejecting current beliefs based on past misunderstanding is just plain unintelligent.

It's been awhile since we published a Rapture
The impetus for such a special report was due to the fact there still remains a significant portion of people within the Body of Christ who don't give eschatology a single thought even though Jesus Christ's Second Coming is written about almost twice as much as His First, and even though roughly a third of the entire Bible is prophetic in nature.
Of course, these are the only reasons why Christians need to be familiar with what God's Word has to say about the future, but they are the two that always immediately come to mind.
I thought about all of that today when I caught wind of a pretty well-known Christian Apologist who indirectly revealed to the world that he simply hasn't studied Bible prophecy as evidenced by his recent comments regarding the Rapture.
Now, this was NO MERE DISAGREEMENT OVER ITS "TIMING", but A FLAT OUT ADMISSION THAT HE BELIEVES THAT THERE IS "NO SUCH THING" AS THE RAPTURE! I'll defer to Alan Kurschner who recently documented this incident for us on his Biblical Prophecy blog.
"THERE'S NO RAPTURE" - GREG KOUKL
"Gregory Koukl is a Christian apologist, radio talk show host, and founder of STAND TO REASON, a solid apologetics ministry that I recommend. At 43:45 into his radio program on 4-2-12, a caller called into this show who apparently switched from being pretrib to posttrib (and supposedly Koukl is posttrib as well). The caller mentioned the point that pretribs reject the posttrib position namely because pretribs believe that Matthew 24 is for Jews, not the church (the caller is correct). There was silence on the other end for a moment, then Koukl said he has never heard of such an argument from pretribulationists. At this point, I was like, "what? you're kidding me." Anyone remotely familiar with the debate between pretrib and posttribs (and prewrath) understand that this is one of the most significant issues in the debate. So I was thinking that perhaps Koukl has just never actually studied the debate. Then the next thing he said only confirmed for me that eschatology is certainly something he has not studied, at least on the rapture issue. He said: "
There's no rapture.
He followed this up with saying that Paul only teaches a resurrection not a rapture. At this point, I wondered how he could get around 1 Thessalonians 4:17, which explicitly mentions the rapture: "THEN WE WHO ARE ALIVE, WHO ARE LEFT, WILL BE SUDDENLY CAUGHT UP TOGETHER WITH THEM IN THE CLOUDS TO MEET THE LORD IN THE AIR. AND SO WE WILL ALWAYS BE WITH THE LORD" (1 Thess 4:17). I kept on listening for him to mention this verse, and listened, and listened. Koukl repeatedly mentioned "1 Thessalonians 4' but never this verse. After a couple more comments he finished with his caller and cut to commercial.
I want to make a few comments.
This is not the first time I have heard seasoned Christians assert, "There is no mention of a rapture in the Bible." Honestly, I do not know how Koukl can miss it. But others who have made this assertion do so for the purpose of getting as far away from pretribulationism as possible, as if: the rapture = pretribulationism. In doing so they unfortunately throw out the baby (the rapture) with the bathwater (pretribulationism).
There are two biblical reasons the Bible teaches a rapture, an explicit and implicit reason. First the explicit, as I cited above:
"Then we who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord" (1 Thess 4:17).
What part of "WILL BE SUDDENLY CAUGHT UP TOGETHER WITH THEM IN THE CLOUDS TO MEET THE LORD IN THE AIR" does Mr. Koukl not understand? You do not have to know Greek to see what the English is clearly saying: We are caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Certainly this is not missing from Koukl's Bible.
The implicit reason for the rapture is shown in three passages that teach when Christ returns he will then bring us to heaven before the Father's presence. It logically follows we must be raptured from the earth before we are brought before the presence of the Father:
"SINCE WE HAVE THE SAME SPIRIT OF FAITH ACCORDING TO WHAT HAS BEEN WRITTEN, "I BELIEVED, AND SO I SPOKE," WE ALSO BELIEVE, AND SO WE ALSO SPEAK, (14) KNOWING THAT HE WHO RAISED THE LORD JESUS WILL RAISE US ALSO WITH JESUS AND BRING US WITH YOU INTO HIS PRESENCE." -2 COR 4:13-14
"IN MY FATHER'S HOUSE are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again AND WILL TAKE YOU TO MYSELF, THAT WHERE I AM YOU MAY BE ALSO." -JOHN 14:2-3
"Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, "These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?" (14) I said to him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me, "These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. (15) "For this reason, THEY ARE BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD; and they serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them." -REV 7:13-15
"One final point, it sounded as if Koukl was saying if you believe in the resurrection you cannot believe in the rapture, or vice versa. What he fails to see is that Paul teaches the resurrection will happen first, then both groups, the alive in Christ and the dead in Christ will be caught up (raptured) together at the same time (1 Thess 4:15-17). "
Kurschner's absolutely right to call out Mr. Koukl's ignorance on this subject. I just pray that he receives the message somehow, appreciates it (2 Timothy 3:16), and that the Lord opens his mind to the truth.
The fact that there is a literal Rapture event is certainly Biblical even if its actual timing is regularly open to debate and discussion.
Continue to encourage the brethren in your life who ignore Bible prophecy to reconsider their stance on the subject and pray for the Lord to give them a desire to watch for His return.
Keep looking up!

Christians are being 'turned' by the promotion of the false doctrine that believers will go through all or part of the tribulation break my heart, because their angst is so unnecessary. Here is a short biblical response to that insidious, joy-stealing stance.
Now, some people say that the rapture itself is a made-up doctrine. I deleted a comment yesterday that was dismissive of the rapture, the commenter said "rapture isn't even in the bible." Well, bible isn't in the bible either. And the bible isn't a figment of my imagination, is it? Neither is the rapture. The word comes from the clearest explanation of this soon-event, 1 Corinthians 15:52, and in 1 Thess 4:14-17. The popular English word for the catching-up event is "rapture", a word derived, as are so many English words, from the Latin language. In fact, when St. Jerome, who lived from approximately 347 to 419 AD, penned the Latin Vulgate translation of scripture, he used the verb rapiemur in I Thessalonians 4:17 as follows: "Deinde nos qui vivimus qui relinquimur simul RAPIEMUR [suddenly caught up] cum illis in nubibus obviam Domino in aera et sic semper cum Domino erimus. I The 4:17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be suddenly caught up [rapiemur]."
"In the Greek translations of the bible, the verb harpazo is used a total of 17 times in the New Testament in a variety of ways, with several referring to the sudden nonconsensual seizure of human beings. The purpose of the above presentation of both the Greek and Latin translation of this verse is to stress that language should not be a barrier to understanding any concept that is established in scripture. Whether a particular English word is or is not found in the bible is not important. What is important is whether the concept is found. The original language in which the text was written reveals that the concept of the sudden catching up is valid." source
That taken care of, we can move to the bible and ask the people who claim the rapture won't happen before the tribulation several questions. As with any position taken of a biblical doctrine, it is important to ask the person to show scriptures that support their stance. In other words, make them prove it.
The pre-tribulation rapture is the only stance that is consistent with scripture. Believing anything else raises more questions than they answer. Like these:
1. Since the Tribulation is to punish sin (Dan 9:24), but God said that our sins are wiped clean (Acts 3:19), not remembered (Heb 8:12), and we are free from accusation (Col 1:22) why, then are we being punished?
2. The tribulation is a time of His wrath (Rev 6:17), so how do you reconcile that He said the church will not be enduring His wrath? (1 Thess 5:9)
3. If our salvation can be lost in the Tribulation, and it can, (Matt. 24:13 / Rev 14:12) how do you reconcile that God said not even the devil can snatch Church-age believers out of His hand? (John 10:29).
4. In post-rapture time, believers must offer sacrifices to demonstrate their faith, follow His commands, and attend the Feast of Tabernacles. (Rev. 14:12; Ez 40-46; and Zechariah 14:16-19). Since God is not the author of confusion (Jer 29:11; 1 Corinthians 14:33) then do post-rapture believers follow the Old Covenant or the New? Do they sacrifice or do they not sacrifice?
5. If as when the wrath begins with the opening of the seals, and at the 6th seal it's asked "For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" (Rev 6:16) then why are believers told that"Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."?
No, the only answer is that the Church age is a unique time in history. The Old Covenant was "paused" at the ascension of Jesus, not done away with. It was paused with 7 years to go. During that time, God has been building His church, "Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to "take out of them a people" for His name." (Acts 15:17). And "I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in." When that full number is reached and we are out of the way, "just as it is written: 'After this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; "(Acts 15:16). After what? After taking a people for himself. He will return His attention to Israel, their hardening removed and the punishment to begin, then the rebuilding of David
Take comfort in all these things, brethren. It seems with the news of each passing day that we are closer to hearing the trumpet, and soon we will gather at His feet.

As I was driving one day I encountered a bumper sticker admonishing me:
"WARNING! In the event of Rapture, this car will be driverless."
The strange belief in the Rapture teaches that some day (sooner rather than later), without warning, born-again Christians will begin to float up from the freeway, abandoned vehicles careening wildly. There will be airliners in the sky suddenly with no one at the controls! Presumably, God is removing these favored ones from earth to spare them the tribulation of the Anti-Christ which the rest of us will have to endure.
Unfortunately the Rapture has been promoted widely by the Left Behind series of According to the Bible and according to the belief not only of Orthodox Christians but also of the Roman Catholic and most Protestant mainline churches, the true Rapture will not be secret; it will be the great and very visible Second Coming of Jesus at the end of the world. That is the one and only "Rapture". It will not be a separate, secret event but one that every eye shall see (1 Thess. 4:16-17).
The word rapture is not found in Scripture but hearkens to 1 Thess. 4:17 where St. Paul says that when the Lord comes again
"we who are alive...shall be caught up...in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air."
This "being caught up...in the clouds"-arpagisometha in Greek, is translated by some as "raptured". The word itself is not found in Orthodox theology.
The notion of a rapture in which Christ comes unseen to take believers away secretly, and only later comes back again for everyone else publicly-this whole teaching is quite novel. It was almost unheard of until John Nelson Darby formulated it in the 1800s as part of a new approach to the Bible, sometimes called "dispensationalism".
The purpose of the "Rapture" is to protect the elect from the tribulations of the end times. Yet Jesus said nothing about sparing anyone from tribulation. In fact, He said,
"In the world you have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world."
Nowhere did Jesus ever say that He would return secretly to rapture the elect. Rather, He promised to be with His elect in all tribulations.
"Lo, I am with you always. I will never leave you or forsake you."
He even had something good to say about being persecuted:
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 5:10).
Those who espouse the Rapture claim that Matthew 24:40-41 refers clearly to the rapture of the just,
"Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left."
The entire passage, however, refers to Christ's second coming where He will judge the living and the dead and separate the just from the unjust.
Darby taught as dogma that when the Scriptures reveal that the Lord will reign on earth for a thousand years (Rev. 20:4), this figure is to be taken literally, rather than as a symbol for eternity as we believe. The Council of Ephesus in A.D. 431 condemned as heresy this teaching which is called chialiasmos (millenianism or 1000 years).
In fact, the Seven Ecumenical Councils (325-787 A.D.) in which the essential truths of the Christian faith were defined never mention a rapture. Yet evangelical Christians and Pentecostals keep using obscure passages of the book of Revelation which purport to give a detailed timetable of what will happen at the end of the world, despite the fact that Jesus Himself warned that no man knows either the day or the hour when the Son of Man shall return.
A major problem with the Rapture is that it ends up teaching not two but three comings of Jesus-first His birth in Bethlehem; second, His secret coming to snatch away (rapture) the "born-again"; and third, His coming at the end of the world to judge the living and the dead and to reign in glory. Yet only two not three comings of Christ are mentioned in the Bible. We have the clearest definition of this in the Nicene Creed when we confess that
"the Lord Jesus Christ...will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. His Kingdom will have no end... I expect the resurrection of the dead. And the life of the ages to come."
There is no mention of a "Rapture".
As already stated, most Christians, Orthodox, Roman Catholics and Protestants do not believe in the Rapture. In fact, one Protestant pastor, John L. Bray, summarized magnificently what we Orthodox and most other Christians believe about the Rapture when he wrote these remarkable words,
"Though many believe and teach this "Pre-Tribulation Rapture" theory, they erroneously do so, because neither Jesus, Paul, Peter, John, nor any of the other writers of the Bible taught this. Nor did the early church fathers, nor any others for many hundreds of years... Did you know that NONE of this was ever taught prior to 1812, and that all forms of Pre-Tribulation Rapture teaching were developed since that date?... If I were to preach something, or believe something, supposedly from the Bible, but cannot find that ANYONE ELSE before 1812 ever believed it or taught it, I would seriously question that it is based on the Bible."
Thus the Rapture is foreign to the Bible and to the living tradition of the Church. It is what we call a heresy, a false teaching. False teachings, such as this, happen when people-like John Darby-believe that they have the right to interpret the Scriptures individually apart from the Living Body of Christ-the Church-where the Spirit of Truth abides and leads us to all truth.
I can think of no better words to conclude than those of Jesus when He speaks of the one and only "Rapture", the Second Coming:
"Be on guard. Be alert! You do not know when that time will come...keep watch...if he comes suddenly, do not let Him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: Watch!" (Mark 13:32-37).-Fr. Anthony M. ConiarisSyndicated by Atom
