# Then what is [Liber XV] doing as the central ritual of a
# non-religious Thelemic *initatory magickal* order?
my best guess:
Crowley meant there to be a deep and profound division
between the cultists (who held tightly to him as a
prophet, his Evul Book as a scripture, and his Mass as
a central rite) and the Thelemites (who reject anyone
as a prophet other than those of whom they have had
personal experience so as to skeptically analyze their
relationship with the divine, who comprehend the
intellectual idiocy of regarding a pamphlet of blatant
self-contradictions authored by same as scripture, and
who regard firm assertions of belief and loyalty to
hierarchic and/or ambiguous cosmologic systems to be
incompatible with their principles - note the potential
of Thelemites to seize upon one personal interpretation
of standard creeds and infiltrate the herd).
this battle he intended to refine for the purposes of
providing a foil for a true Thelemic community
developing in contrast to dogma and ecclesiastical
domination. essentially he wanted to strike out hard
against religion by creating a farcical and
unsubstantiatable example which would be skewered
on the Sword of Thelema once and for all as an
example to all others that might try to wrest the
sovereignty of the individual with respect to
spirituality from the herd, develop truly Thelemic
bases in order to survive, or so thoroughly
corrupt the Order of which it was a part that it
could be seen quite plainly as a cancerous
development on the Face of the Order (malignant).
perhaps he refers to this briefly in some of the
Holy
for this we should not fault them, but instead merely inform them at the proper time and via the proper method of the liberating options available to them. remember, their ignorance hampers them more
severely than any self-absorbed oaths and restrictions which they
have seen fit in their ignorance to accept unto themselves.
# anyone wanna make book on how many years it will be before
# EGC *does* attempt to copyright the term THELEMA as its own?
it is entirely unimportant, being a ridiculous act.

When I posted about being 'In Between' a mention of Reclaiming was made. This generated a lot of comments regarding 'Goddess Only' paradigms. Most of it was unfavorable. I believe I've made my point clear on that particular issue.
However, many folks assumed the only correct position to take was of a genderless 'source' god. This reflects the bias of the current culture. There is only one god. How do we know? Because they've renamed Yahweh "God". They took away his name and gave him the noun. Therefore, all other gods are lesser or non-existent. There would be less Christians if they called him by his name because naming one's god acknowledges others exist. Knowing that others exist allows the spiritual seeker to explore. Allowing only once choice restricts the seeker to two responses, the "God" or no god. Even as pagans we 'split the difference' and claim to be pagan and monothestically inclined. Such is the influence of the "All god".
This is why so many spiritual people are out of sorts. They are forcing themselves into one little mold. That mold fits many but not everyone.
If you say you're pagan, you owe it to yourself to read a book that blows away the concept of the omnipotent, omnipresent, all-knowing God. It lays out the arguments for that position, rebuts them, covers the rebuttals to the rebuttal and that rebuts the rebuttal's rebuttal. Damn, that's a lot of butts. It explains why so many people turn into asses when they discuss religion.
You owe it to yourself because it lays out the case for polytheism making more sense than monotheism. I speak as one that 'splits the difference' and still recommend the book.
Take a gander at John Michael Greer's "A World Full of Gods". The link takes you to the ADF publication wing. Spend the extra buck over Amazon and let the money go into John's pocket. I think with his contributions to the pagan community over many years, he's earned it.

"A PROTECTION RITUAL"
Return To The Grimoire Menu
A RITUAL OF PROTECTION Before you begin this or any ritual please review these three very important postings. The Law Of Accountability
Spell Construction
Protecting Your Energies
Grounding & Balancing For Ritual Work
-
TOOLS What you need before you get started.
* A white and gold candle.
* A rope made of natural fibers. Long enough to make a circle approximately 5 feet in diameter.
* A ceremonial broom, feather or scepter to mark the doorway of your circle.
* This is more personal preference than anything else. Being part Native American, I have made a small stick (about 2" in diameter and 2 feet long) which has a carved wolf's head at the top. I've decorated the wooden stick with leather fringe, white feathers and beads. This scepter acts as my doorway into the sacred wheel/circle.
* Matches and a candle snuffer.
* A potion ~ The Rose Shield (optional)
* If the spell is for a person, select an amulet to consecrate for protection.
* This can be a spiritual symbol such as a pentagram, or animal.
* A crystal, such as Peridot, Pyrite, or Clear Quartz.
* Sea salt for cleansing the amulet.
* A bowl or small saucer to hold the amulet as you consecrate it.
* An object to represent the Western side of the Wheel of Life, and/or the Earth element.
* An owl, crow or snake can represent the West.
* So to can autumn leaves, or a red candle.
* You can use dirt, or red clay soil for the earth.
* You're Book of Shadows and something to write with.
* An offering to the Great Spirits.
* If you're planning on meditating (which is recommended) during the ritual, select an appropriate piece of music to last 10 to 30 minutes.
-
THE SHIELD SPELL A spell of protection is not an act against another person, animal, object, or event. Rather it is a shield which surrounds you and/or the person, place or object you wish to protect. This is an important distinction as this sets the foundation for your INTENT. If you don't understand this, then go back and read the Law Of Accountability posting. This spell is most often used when someone feels they are in danger or in fear of another person or situation. This is not always the case, as this spell can also be used to protect you and your car or any vehicle from trouble if you take a long trip. In any case, this ritual addresses the fear that might be underlying the need for protection. CREATING YOUR SACRED SPACE:
* Creating your sacred space, begins with you. Before you can begin any spiritual work, be it a simple mediation or full blown ceremony complete with pomp and circumstance, YOU must be prepared. Being Grounded and Balanced before any spiritual work is essential to both your intent and the effectiveness of you work. So take a few moments to read our process for Grounding & Balancing For Ritual Work.
* Face northward, holding the long rope in your hands. Raise the rope to your deity of choice and say something like:
* Great Spirits,
I lay down this barrier,
for the purpose of setting my protection,
both within and outside this sacred space.
* You will lay out the rope in two sections beginning with the center of the rope in the north. The circle should be large enough for you to sit inside and should include your altar if possible. Don't step inside the circle as you lay out the rope. Stand on the outer edge until the circle is drawn. The easiest way to begin is to find the center of the rope and lay it down in the North. Then coil the section that will be placed in the west on the floor near your starting point so it will not be in your way as you lay out the east side of the circle.
* The right or the east side of the circle is defined first. Place the center of the rope in the North, then walk clockwise to the east, ending with the free end in the south.
* Return to the north and pick up the remaining section. Move counter-clockwise laying the rope in the west to end with the free end in the south.
* When you have finished, you should be standing at the bottom (south) of the circle, facing north.
* Hold up your ceremonial scepter or broom and say a prayer asking that this be the doorway between your physical world and the spiritual world being created inside the circle. Say something like:
* Great Spirits,
I place this staff as my circles shield
to protect my intent and this sacred field.
Within this wheel I ask for divine light,
to preserve my actions as they move into the night.
* As you step over the scepter into the circle, state your purpose for entering this sacred space. Once inside, imagine a doorway of divine energy closing behind you. Say something like:
* Great Spirits,
I, state your magik name, enter this sacred wheel to
request protection and understanding
for {name a person, situation, whatever}.
CALLING UPON THE SPIRITS:
* Once you have entered your sacred circle, close your eyes and call upon the spiritual entities you would like to be present for support and assistance. You might call upon the God/Goddess, your spiritual guides and teachers. Or a particular protection pantheon, such as Hermes, Vishnu, or Gawain for the Gods. Aradia, Athena, or Brigantia (Brighid) for the Goddess.
* First call your personal Spirit Guide and solicit their assistance during the ritual. Your personal guide can assist you to maintain focus and concentration during the ritual as well as, aid in your tasks within the circle. You might call upon them like this:
* (State your guides' name),
I call upon your guidance and love to assist me during this ceremony of protection.
To help me maintain my focus, energy and alignment for divine purpose and work.
* Many traditional witches align their energies with their personal deity or Pantheon at this point as well. You might call upon them like this:
* I believe in the spiritual existence of myself as a perfect image of (deity' name).
In this reflection that is my physical embodiment, I align myself and my faith in the supreme guidance of my soul with the ancient powers and wisdom of (state the deity' name once more) for the purpose of invoking protection and understanding.
* However you chose to call upon the spirit(s), make sure you're stating your purpose for the summoning, asking permission or inviting (not demanding) them to join you. Make sure you give proper thanks and offerings for their assistance as well.
* Once you have invited the divine spirits to join you, you can sit inside your circle and prepare for casting.
LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLE:
* Begin with lighting your altar candle. This is the white candle you selected in your preparations.
* Close your eyes and imagine a flame being lit within your own body.
* Imagine your spiritual essence, lighting a flame in your solar plexus. This is your divine light, the spirit within you that will provide the energy to the wick of your candle and the work ahead.
* With each breath you take, imagine the flame inside your being growing stronger and brighter. Until it fills your entire body with it's warmth and bright light.
* Open your eyes, take the matches/lighter in hand and light the wick of your candle.
* Say something like:
* Great Spirits,
I, state your magik name, bring to light this flame of fire,
protecting my purpose from the muck and mire.
{pick up the amulet and present it to the divine forces}
I set forth this amulet for divine consecration,
as a guardian for, state the person or issue being protected, from this dedication.
* Place the amulet into a small bowl and cover it with sea salt.
CASTING THE SHIELD:
* Start with lighting your protection candle. This is the gold candle you selected in your preparations.
* As before, close your eyes and imagine a flame being lit within your own body.
* Imagine your spiritual essence, lighting a flame in your solar plexus. This is your divine light, the spirit within you that will provide the energy to the wick of your candle.
* With each breath you take, imagine the a gold flame inside your being growing stronger and brighter. Until it fills your entire body.
* Open your eyes, take the matches/lighter in hand and light the wick of your candle.
* As you do, imagine the light within you gaining in strength and growing yet again, this time your body can not contain the energy field and it pushes outside to encompass your physical being.
* Say something like:
* Great Spirits,
I bring to light this guardian flame,
sending all fear back from whence it came.
* With the protection candle lit and ready, you're ready for the meat of the Shield Spell.
* Use your right hand to draw you personal sigil or a pentacle over the flame. (Not too close, you don't want to get burned.) You can use the center of your palm as the drawing force, the tips of your fingers or just one finger, it's up to you. I use my middle and ring fingers pressed together, with my hand open. If you were to look at my hand from above, it would resemble the hand language sign for 'I Love You'. Say something like:
* Great Spirits,
I, state your magik name, set forth the light of protection
for, state the person or purpose needing protection.
I ask to the divine forces to shield him/her from harm,
fear and (if a person is causing the need for protection, state that persons name, it if is an event or issue, describe that here).
* Next, make a circle with your hands about 3 inches over the top of the candle. Thumb touching thumb, and middle finger touching middle finger. No other fingers should be touching.
* Slowly lower your "hand circle" over and around the candle to it's base. As you do, cast your spell. You'll do this 3 times. Once for each verse. Don't rush it, if you reach the bottom of the candle before you've completed your verse, hold your hands in the circle at the base and complete the citation.
* As you recite the spell, imagine the color of the candle rising up into the flame. Imagine your words carrying the light and energy of the spell from your hands into the candle and into the flame. Imagine all these energies combining, taking shape and form within the flame of the candle. As your recite the spell each time, imagine the energy you've created going out into the spiritual world through the light and smoke of the flame, making it's way to manifestation. Your verses might be something like this:
* Great Spirits, Lady Brighid, Queen of Heaven and protectress of life,
I, state your magik name, ask for your help and sacred energy to enter my shield (or who/whatever the protection is needed for) that I may carry your divine protection with me. * I ask for assistance that this hallowed shield deflect any and all ill intentions from those who wish to do harm physically, emotionally or spiritually.
* Please grant this prayer to ease the fear and concern of, state the persons name, so they might find understanding and compassion of those wishing to do them harm.
* For your gracious assistance I give my greatest thanks.
Blessings Be To The.
* Move the bowl containing the amulet between you and the candle.
* Raise the bowl and present it to the divine forces. Say something like this:
* Great Spirits, Lady Brighid,
Please case your favor and protection on this simple amulet.
Instill your divine protection into it's boundaries, and permeates energy with your divine light. I ask that your divine protection encompass the one who carries/wears it for as long as the need exists.
* Remove the amulet from the salt and hold it over the candle's flame,
* For your gracious assistance I give my greatest thanks.
Blessings Be To The.
* Replace the amulet in the dish, but this time rest it on top of the sea salt.
* Many people find it appropriate to honor the spirits and deities that they've asked to assist them. I happen to be one of these people. However, for rituals such as this, my family has given honor through an offering of life, instead of food. By that I mean, planting a seed or plant in honor of the deities. One that supports or represents the energy of the deity. In this case, a rose bush would be an appropriate offering.
* Raise the unplanted bush and present it to the divine forces. Say something like this:
* I give this offering of rose and thorn as my symbol of gratitude and honor.
To the Great Spirits and Lady Brighid, whose light and love shall shine through it's pedals of beauty, to remind us all of your unselfish gifts.
Blessings Be To The.
MEDITATION AND CLOSING:
* No matter what your ceremony is for, you should add a moment of meditation to the event. In this altered state, you can add to a spell by visualizing the energy being created, seeing it in your mind as it manifests and comes to form. You can contact the Great Spirits and engage them in a private ritual. You can use this time to thank the forces that have helped you this evening. Lastly, you might ask for clarity of vision or a better understanding for why this situation is happening. What additional lessons are there to learn from this issue?
* Here's where you should write a brief summary of the ritual and your experience in your personal Book of Shadows. Record any insights you might have gained through the meditation, or any physical feelings, or emotions you might have experienced.
* Conclude your ritual by closing your chakra centers. You can following the same final step in the Grounding ceremony to accomplish this.
* When you have completed this step, stand inside your circle. Face north and give thanks once more for this sacred space. Turn southward and imagine the energy door opening, allowing you to exit while still protecting the circle. Step over the scepter and imagine the doorway closing behind you.
THE CLEAN UP As you clean up your circle and altar, snuff out the altar candle. In some circles it's considered to be bad form to blow out the flame. Allow the protection candle to burn for about another 30 minutes. BUT don't leave the candle un-attended! Set it on a fire place mantle, or some place where it will not cause harm or danger within your home. Place the amulet near the candle and leave it there until you're ready to give it to the person it was meant for. At that time, remove the amulet and clean it with luke warm water and dry it. Place it inside a small pouch or bag made from natural fibers, such as cotton, silk or even a small wooden box will do. Present the amulet to the person as a gift from the Great Spirits. That concludes the shield ritual. I hope those who try it, find it to be helpful. Many Blessings.

As the image shows in this famous 1500's woodcut, Christians believed that witches and Satanists would kiss the rear end of the Devil in order to show their solidarity with him. Legends like these are an important part of what Christians believe about Satanists, yet as Satanists we do not have the same understandings that they do. That is because we do not see Satan as the enemy. All the same, it is an important part in the development of the stories of Satan throughout the Medieval era.
There are also images of Holy Popes kissing the devil's rear. It is known as the 'kiss of shame' - the "OSCULUM INFAME". In legendary tales this infamous kiss is what sealed the fate of those who chose to walk in line with the devil. This shameful act sought to identify those that were in league with Satan. Unfortunately such things never occurred and they were just urban myths that were spread throughout christian lands, a useful myth that allowed Christians to unite under the cause of destroying what they thought was Satan's work here on this earth. In the end, all they did was destroy each other.
Perhaps it had to do with Christian's continual obsession with associating the body with either saintly or sinister things. Consider how holy the body of Christ is to christians. The image of the pallid, dying saviour on the cross, his body tortured beyond belief, yet he lived. He entered into the underworld through the cave and rose three days later on what was later to become a celebration of Easter. This holiday was symbolic of the coming of spring, and the ending of winter. It was adopted from earlier religions and created into a christian story.
There are other associations with the body as well - like the association with the head as the seat of the heart and spirit; the association with the head and things that are on top or above with things that are christian or holy, and the association of the bottom or things below [including the feet] as things of the devil. You see, only sweet things have potential to come from the mouth...but only stinky and sinful things come from those lower parts having to do with sexuality and elimination of bodily wastes.
Christians really thought that sweet scents and pleasing scents were more divine than those scents that are repugnant or repulsive. We see this in their association of brimstone [sulphour] to Satan, which bubbles up from below the earth and does indeed stink. In this way the Christians weren't much different than their pagan predecessors in using environmental associations and the body to describe their religion.
In this we see a map of heaven and hell, and their two entrances. Speak the name of Christ and ye shall be in heaven - kiss the ass[hole] of the devil and be eaten by it's vicious mouth after death. The 'Osculum Infame' was not just a kiss on the cheek of the ass; lets just say that it was supposed to be placed where it counts most! Gross,eh? Its an ugly and improper thing to suggest in general..but then again if you are bedfellows with the devil, whats to stop you from committing an act like that to show that you are indeed in league with Satan?
Of course it bears repeating that this is a Christian notion rather than a notion of modern Satanists. To be a Satanist is not a shameful thing. Perhaps Christians see us this way, but they have been taught to hate those kinds of things.
Throughout history, Christians are rather infamous for suggesting the most horrible things possible about those who aren't part of their religion, such as cakes made of babies, and candles made of their fat, slaughter of animals for their blood to use as a drink during rituals, incest, you name it. Of course none of it was true, but the main purpose was to defame, demonize and insult people of other cultures. This relates especially to the Jewish, and the Christian stereotype of the Jewish looking Satan, including the use of the goat as being symbolic of sin.
So as you can see, the Osculum Infame may identify what is Satanic to Christians.. But for us, as Satanists its just another lesson in how their prejudice and demonization of others and even themselves has effected the world for centuries. During the medieval era it was a subversion tactic that served them well.

Another problem with generic magic in a Golden Dawn context is quite often the core of the system ends up being something that is not actually Golden Dawn.
The purpose of Golden Dawn is varied; but the working techniques are pretty much the same from Order to Order. In groups that take the generic approach this is not always true.
For instance, I know of one Order that basic working technique is "spirit guides." Golden Dawn traditionally has nothing against spirit guides (ignoring the political and PR statements concerning Theosophy), but it is not something that Neophytes are encouraged to dabble in.
In this spirit guide system, contact with the spirit guides is considered the crux of the system, with all the other techniques being optional. It should be the other way around in my opinion.
To understand the problem with the idea of making contact with one's spirit guide and ignoring the rest of the system, just think about this: How do you know that it is actually your spirit guide and not a demon (qlippoth)?
There is nothing wrong with making contact with your spirit guide; there is a problem if you have no way of testing and defending yourself against possible hostile entities.

[from
effort to "blaspheme"? How can you "blaspheme" something you are not even supposed to be a part of? How can you "blaspheme" the Christians' god unless you accept his reality? How can you "blaspheme" Jesus unless you really believe him to be the "son of god", as the Christians maintain?
The excessive attempts to "blaspheme" - indeed the preoccupation
to be
"blasphemous" - indicate a mentality that is still fundamentally Christian.
Sure, Christianity is still an enemy, one of several. Any dogma which seeks to impose itself against the freedom of the individual to be as he is, is an enemy.
Christianity is the product of a certain type of person. People make religions; religions do not make people. The Christian type is born.
Satanists are outside of Christianity. Yet so many claiming to be
"Satanists" exist solely within the Christian context. They take their cue from Christian theology and Christian imagery, and merely reverse it, to be
"blasphemous" in an effort to infuriate that jealous old Hebrew god Jehovah, which they obviously believe in, and think they are so "evil" for doing so.
The types of person attracted to Christianity and other such
repressive dogmas that stifle the life-force are themselves born devoid of that life-force; i.e. genetically, biologically. They are in rebellion against nature and the cosmos. They are, in esoteric terms, shut off from the Tree of Life, empty shells - klippoths. Christianity is a death cult - an
inversion of
nature.
Satanism is not inverse Christianity; Christianity is inverse nature.
Satanism is a reflection of nature and the cosmos.
Our self-styled "Satanists" so obsessed with "blasphemy" are accepting the Church's own definition of "Satanism".
Dark Force
From whence Satan-ism then? From Sat and Tan, Sanskrit for the Dark Force infusing the cosmos (Sat), and (Tan). The Hebrews recognised this life-force as the enemy, and so "Satan" became their "adversary" because they (the Jehovah cult) were shut off from the Tree of life (he flow of life).
We see the Satanic cosmology in Tantra and Taoism among other ways, reflecting the flow of the life-force in humanity; concepts far more ancient than Christianity or Judaism.
Healthy Pentagram
The symbol of this life-force is the pentagram with two points up.
This is not an "inverse" pentagram; it is the right way up, the Eastern star in its correct position: a symbol of life, of health, of the Sat and the Tan.
Notice the centre forms the shape (pentagon) of a house with the five (Tan)
points representing how the Sat manifests in nature. The one-point-up pentagram, so beloved by self-righteous New Age types, is the house reversed;
nature on its head.
This Dark Force in nature creates and destroys, causes change in the cosmos; what scientists today call "Entropy".
Satan is the god/dess of life, the cosmocrator; Pan - the All.
Come out of the cemetery, forget the death imagery and the morbidity;
rejoice in life, and have a happy day.
THE DEVIL
- AS TRICKSTER/MOCKER/JOKER-
The following was a dialogue with a French inquirer who sough
information on Satanism. His thinking on what Satanism was had been scrambled by the propaganda of the Christling priests.
"...Satanism attracts me. I am very serious and determined! I do not consider Satanism to be 'fun'! I hate 'fun'!... I want to live the Satanic way. Can you help me?"
Reply
I would like to make a few comments on some of your remarks, which I hope you will not think patronizing.
First, "Satanism isn't fun!" Surely the JOY of life is the very
essence of Satanism. What happened to the Devil as the cosmic Trickster - virtually a Universal Archetype (Coyote to the American Indians, Loki to the Norse, for e.g.)? The Devil as the Joker in the pack, the Mocker, that gives unpredictability and chance to life?
What about Satan as Dionysus or as Pan, as the frolicking, wild,
chasing, playing god of the pagans? That figure of merriment that the Christling Church hated so much that he became the very face of Satan himself, as the horned and goat-footed god of the witches?
It is the Christling church which has defined Satan and Satanism as sombre and the Satanist's favourite hangout as the graveyard. Some sorry and misguided types actually fall for that and become the very definition of a
"Satanist" which the Christling priests invented. And of course some are indeed sombre and joyless, so lacking in Life that their TRUE place is in the Christling Church.
What were the witches' Sabbaths of Medieval times other than a
cathartic release from the morbidity and stifling puritanism of the Church? An
excuse for one big communal party, where such horrendous things as dancing could be indulged in, which one could commit other "sins" such as gluttony.
Where the peasant folk could for once escape the watchful eyes of the joyless prelates of the Nazarene, and have some FUN!?
And these Sabbaths - these big parties - were then typically twisted by the priests to be described as gatherings where the folk would be forced to
kiss the arse of The Devil, to eat rotten food and drink urine.
Local night club
Even that arch-propagator of misinformation, Dennis Wheatley, at least had it right regarding the Sabbaths:
"People all brought their contributions [of food and drink. The man who represented the goat or stag god... would, we may assume, have been a cheerful popular fellow and probably the village joker. Those who played instruments would form a band... Everyone else danced, feasted, drank and fornicated... Come cockcrow, and the revellers, tired but happy wended their way back to their poor hovels, to face another week of gruelling work; but with the cheering thought that its end they would dance, feast and enjoy free love again."

Magick can be an elusive thing. It can be a difficult thing to master, and sometimes fails miserably. In order for one to practice magick effectively, to explore its mysteries, one must have the proper tools. In this case, the proper tools are:
* Timing magick effectively;
* Having a space to practice magick; and
* Having a purpose for magick.
TIMING FOR MAGICK
Timing magick has two aspects. The first regards turning the practice of magick into a habit. Something only becomes a habit if it is done regularly. Magick should be practiced regularly, preferably at the same time each day, and hopefully with no missed days. For some, this time will be when they first awaken; for others, upon arriving home from work or school. Others may choose to perform magick spells in the moments right before bed, but do this cautiously, as magickal training may leave one too energized to sleep.
Timing also has another important influence in the practice of magick. Certain magick spells and rituals are affected by the time of day, day of the week, or phase of the moon. In this case, those magicks should be carefully scheduled. Magick to gain something, for example, is best performed during the waxing moon. Those magick which focus on banishing should take place during the waning moon.
A SPACE FOR MAGICKAL PRACTICE
A space is needed for magickal practice. This can be a bedroom, office, or den; it can also be outdoors. Any place that is quiet and private will suffice for magickal practice. Typically, many people will object, saying they do not have the space. To truly practice magick, a designated place to do so is absolutely required. It doesn't have to be huge. Ideally, there will be an entire room to devote to the practice of magick, but even the corner of the living room will work.
Perhaps a corner of the garage can be cleared or, even better, an area outside can be screened off, made private, and utilized as one's true temple. However, it can be just as effective to have a chair in the corner of the kitchen. Be creative, and search out an appropriate space to perform magick.
There should be adequate space for the storage of magickal tools, incense, herbs, oils, and the many other items that practitioners collect. This can be in the form of shelves, chests, or even storage bags hung on the wall. There is no firm rule concerning storage spaces.
If there is really no space, indoors or out, that will work, consider finding a spot at the local park that is secluded. Use a backpack to carry supplies and It is a question that each practitioner should ask him or herself. The answer is important, and will become more so if one continues to pursue a magickal path. Magick is not for revenge. It is not to be used to cause harm, or to control or manipulate anyone. It is not a Hollywood effect. For Wiccans and other practitioners, magick is very real and it's a practice that must be treated with respect.
Magick acts according to natural laws, and using it for certain purposes does eventually backfire. However, for those who wish to use magick to made decisions, find strength, protect themselves and others, and help create a better world, than a magickal path might just be the right path.
There are many things to do when first starting on a magickal path and choosing to study magickal theory. Magickal names are to be considered, tools are to be collected, and decisions regarding how and when one will practice magick must be made.

Woah, loads of Witches joining in the Fitness Challenge, myself included, but it made me think...Hey, we are Witches ! Why are we not using our Magick to lose weight and get fit?
I found this interesting spell over at Llewellyn a while back - I tried it for a bit but my heart wasn't in it...but NOW I have a friend's Silver Wedding party coming up on the 22nd October, (which will be more like a high school reunion, I'm guessing) and I *really* need to lose at least a stone for that, not just beehive my hair all high and wear platforms, my usual form of fatty disguise!

This magical weight-loss strategy works on the vibrational level to create positive shifts in your mind, body, and emotions. And today is a great day to begin!
Obtain a 32-ounce (or so) water bottle that you really love. With a permanent marker, write "lightness" on the outside of the bottle. Then write "joy." Fill the bottle with water and add 2 drops of crabapple flower essence (available online and at many health food stores). Hold it in both hands and visualize a very bright white light filling the water as you say:
Goddess, please establish lightness, beauty, and perfect health in every cell of my being.
Throughout the day, drink the entire bottle of water and then repeat. Each day, drink two empowered bottles of water until you reach your perfect weight. Over time, you'll notice your habits naturally starting to transform into healthier ones. Allow this to happen.

My path from atheism to Christianity and back to atheism was not a straight line. There were a few detours along the way which led me to various dead ends. One of these was Satanism. If there is one stance on religion that is more misunderstood than atheism, it would have to be Satanism. In this series, I will attempt to clear up some of the misconceptions about Satanism, highlight some of the important similarities and differences between Satanism and atheism, and even make the shocking suggestion that we atheists could learn something from the Satanists.
UNDERSTANDING SATANISM
I want to distinguish between two forms of Satanism so that the reader will understand what I am talking about here and not get bogged down in Christian hysteria or inaccurate media portrayals. There have been way too much of both.
What most of us think of when we heat the term "Satanism" does not really deserve to be called Satanism at all. Think of this as the catch-all category containing all the various forms of unorganized mysticism involving dark, Satanic themes with which many American teenage metal fans are fascinated. This is the form that Christians tend to become hysterical about, to exaggerate, and which the American media loves to cover. If you lived in the U.S. during the 1980s, you'll know exactly what I mean.
I am not proud of this at all, but this is the form of Satanism in which I dabbled as a teenage metal fan. I still love metal, the darker and more "evil" the better, but I've outgrown the desire to emulate these darker themes. But back in the day, I was into this stuff. I never sacrificed anything, robbed graves, or did most of the other things that the media wanted you to believe was epidemic in the 80s. I did do (and believe) some pretty ridiculous things back then though. In my defense, this was little more than short-lived experimentation of no real consequence.
The second form of Satanism is what I want to focus on, the real Satanism. It is the religious philosophy and ritual established by Anton Szandor LaVey in the form of the Church of Satan and described in "The Satanic Bible". From this point on, this is what I am referring to when I use the term "Satanism." I recognize that there are other forms of Satanism which could be considered "real Satanism" and which depart in some important ways from what I describe here.
If you are not familiar with Satanism, here are some things to keep in mind:
* The Church of Satan came out of San Francisco in the late 1960s, and LaVey's initial following included a magician, a filmmaker, various authors, at least one local politicians, and even foreign royalty.
* Satanists do not actually believe in or worship Satan; they use the symbol of Satan to shock, challenge, and unsettle. For Satanists, Satan is merely a powerful image of an adversary.
* Satanists are atheists and are intensely anti-theistic.
* Satanism explicitly prohibits human and animal sacrifice.
* Satanic rituals are based on psychodrama and are as much if not more about personal transformation than belief in the supernatural.
In the next post in this series, we will examine the relationship between Satanism and atheism, identifying the relevant similarities and differences. Stay tuned.

This post relates to theistic satanism, and more specifically, my personal relationship with the deity known as Satan.
Some people have asked me if I believe in Satan as a deity; and I do. But then they also say, that if I believe in Satan, I also believe in god. I believe that the christian god is as real as the many other gods that are out there but i am not obligated to be a part of *his* religion in order to be a satanist. This is because the Satan that is known to me, the Satan that is known to other satanists is not the same Satan from Christianity.
This is not opinion, it is based on several different factors, which makes Satanism unique from Christianity. One of these, is that satanism as an organized religion didn't start until the 1960's and since then it has developed into what it is today- a separate religion and philosophy which has " borrowed" from many different sources for inspiration, much like neo-paganism and other religious movements today.
Why is this Satan different than the christian Satan? There are characteristics that satanists identify with, through the mythology of the christian Satan. These are usually the desirable traits like freedom, individuality, and opposition.
However, unlike christian teachings the Satan of satanists is not an evil thing; while it personifies the dark aspects of the soul satanism seeks to reconcile these halves to make a whole, instead of denying that both good and 'evil' come from within. The christian seeks either to please god or to fear the devil; while the satanist only seeks to please the self.
My personal relationship with Satan has been an experience that has been with me for a long time. Satan is a living god to me, but I am not a religious satanist. Religion requires faith and belief, and the use of religious doctrines and that is not my path. Satan as the one who puts challenges into my path and through his works I see 'Satan'.
My greatest communion with him is during the times that I realize my full potential, either spiritually or magically. Satan has inspired me as a role-model of independence which is why i am loyal to Satan, but I do not feel the need to worship him. My form of spirituality is manifestation of the satanic current through satanic works.
My worship and praise is in the form of action which helps Satan to manifest in this world in one more unique way. My search for who or what Satan is over the years has also been a search within myself. Satan does not direct my actions, nor does he 'tell me' what to do, or guide my decisions. I don't look to Satan for guidance, I look within, because that is where my true answer is. What I've learned in magic and the occult, I've learned through practice and experience.
And this is the metaphor of Satan; that he only needed himself, "I" from beginning to end. That to me is the greatest teaching of Satan. This is one of the reasons why I am an independent Satanist. But, i have to digress; everyone has their own personal spiritual view, and personal communication with Satan.
Others may have different relationships with Satan, and achieve different results. I have known others who worship Satan as a deity and see him either as a master "The Master" or as a father figure "Father Satan". Satan could be strictly symbolic for others, who see him as a motivator. What does Satan represent to you?
