THE CAULDRON
"No picturen of a Witch has been complete without a large Cauldron bubbling and steaming away since Shadespeare's Macbeth. "
It should be remembered that the Cauldron is simply the forerunner of the saucepan. What we now consider to be a 'cauldron' used to be an everyday kitchen pot for our forebears, and would have been kept filled with steaming broth.
Today's Witches use saucepans to cook in, whether food or lotions and potions. For nus nthe Cauldron has other meanings and uses. As with the Chalice, the a Cauldron is a symbol of the Goddess. However, whereas the Chalice usually only holds wine or other drinks, the Cauldron is used to contain fire, to prevent scorching carpets or the land. Leaping such a fire is a key part of many cleansing and fertility Rites. It can also hold water to act as a dark mirror for scrying, or in water rituals. A Cauldron can represent the Cauldron of Cerridwen which has the power of giving knowledge and life, or the Cauldron of Dagda, one of the four treasures of the Tuatha de Danann.
When seeking a Cauldron, ensure that it is made of thick metal, usually iron as thin metal may not take the heat of even a couple night-lights. There are two basic styles of Cauldrons: the kind designed to hang over an openfire which generally has a large handle and no legs, and the kind with 3 sturdy legs which can stand on its own, keeping the heat away from whatever is underneath. The latter is more useful unless you only intend to hang it over a hearth.

In the six years since my first book was published, I have occasionally provoked small controversies in the pagan community. The mere fact that I study and teach ethics in the pagan community is controversial enough, aside from any of the things I actually say: for as most pagans are surely aware, there is a large and influential sector of the community which denies the validity of any kind of moral reasoning at all. I generated controversy when I suggested that the sugar maple should be "the" Canadian pagan world tree; that consistent volunteers and effective leaders should be honoured in a particularly conspicuous way; that the pagan movement could adopt a set of flags and symbols; and that reason should play a greater role in people's spiritual lives. I was rather fond of those ideas, and at the time fairly sure they would benefit the community, but they were thought of by most people (so it seemed) as rather stupid. So I stopped pursuing some of them.
I've even generated controversy by using female pronouns in the text of my Communities often benefit from the people who declare their commitment to an unpopular cause and stick to it under fire. (Well, they benefit when the cause is just. Some unpopular causes are also idiotic causes and that is precisely why they are unpopular). But I sometimes wonder, MIGHT THERE BE A LIMIT TO THE USEFULNESS OF CONTROVERSY AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL CHANGE? Controversies often get people arguing with each other in an overtly passionate, confrontational way. The point of the debate, whether in support or in opposition to some proposition, tends to get lost. And friendships can be strained or even poisoned. Sometimes one interlocutor makes it his purpose to defeat and humiliate the person who asserts the controversial view, not because he believes the contrary view but because he feels a need to demonstrate superiority. This can spoil the matter for everyone.
Some might say, "At least the controversy is getting people talking about the issues". But I think there comes a point when mere talking about an issue is no longer enough. We should also want the talking to be "productive and progressive" too. Also, debate should eventually give way to action: we should want to "do" things, not just talk about them. Even Aristotle affirmed that there comes a moment in public affairs when the emphasis must shift from deliberation to action.
Some might say, "All publicity is good publicity". But this, too, can go wrong for the person who seeks attention by generating controversy. Such a person may do damage to his reputation, for instance by giving others reason to judge him as a grandstanding loudmouth, instead of as an intelligent and progressive trailblazer. Your sense of self worth should come from your own rational judgment of your own life, of course: but your reputation is an enormously valuable asset too. Those who deliberately court controversy risk damaging their reputations, and that doesn't help their cause.
The point of a rational debate is that people who disagree at first eventually find agreement among each other: and that the agreement is reached by everyone's collaborative, clear-minded, and good-hearted pursuit of the good, the real, the true, and the beautiful. In a rational debate, no one wins unless everyone wins. I AM DEEPLY COMMITTED TO THE IDEA THAT OUR MOST IMPORTANT SPIRITUAL IDEAS ARE THE ONES WHICH EMERGE FROM OUR RELATIONSHIPS WITH EACH OTHER, AND THAT RATIONAL DEBATE IS ONE OF THE MANY VEHICLES FOR THOSE RELATIONSHIPS. But debates about controversial topics are not always rational or spiritually productive in that sense. People are quick to get angry, and interpret the controversial proposition as an attack on their lives and identities. Or, they ignore the controversy completely, in order to avoid getting involved in anything that may require them to do something. Controversies are often concluded when the debaters give up and concede victory to the loudest braggart.
And so I put the question: to those who wish to initiate social changes, either in their own small communities or in their wider, national-level communities, HOW USEFUL IS CONTROVERSY, REALLY? How much is too much? Is a certain amount of controversy necessary? Under what circumstances should someone deliberately stir the pot?

In a letter from Global Harvest Ministries ("Global Link", 11/1/05), C. Peter Wagner, chief architect of the "Second Apostolic Age" and inventor of many new doctrines spreading like leaven throughout evangelicaldom, wrote about his latest book "Freedom from the Religious Spirit". In this book he invents yet another doctrine about demon possession by a "religious spirit."
"In my recent book, "Freedom from the Religious Spirit", I pointed out that the chief tactic of this clever DEMON is to use RELIGIOUS DEVICES to PRESERVE THE STATUS QUO. If it is successful, the SPIRIT OF RELIGION can PREVENT us from moving into God's NEW TIMES AND SEASONS.
"However, as I watch what is happening in Global Harvest, I must say, with some pardonable degree of satisfaction that the RELIGIOUS SPIRIT does not appear to have much of a stronghold around here. It seems that God is constantly moving us into NEW TIMES and SEASONS. He is pouring out NEW WINE, and we are trying to keep up by developing as many NEW WINESKINS as we can. And every time we taste the NEW WINE, we get more enthustiastic than ever about moving fowards in the next effervescent stream of the Holy Spirit." [emphases added]
Wagner is one of the chief proponents of the "demon-behind-every-bush" theology. His core theology teaches that Satan was not defeated by Jesus' shed blood on the cross, but rather needs to be continually defeated by a believer's activities. (For more information on this point, see the many articles pertaining to Wagner and his new doctrines at Because the next move of this Apostolic movement is potentially very controversial, and may have a hard-sell in mainstream America, Wagner is heading off opposition at the pass by declaring in advance that anybody speaking out against this "new thing" that God is supposedly doing has a demonic "religious spirit." So any pastor or godly saint speaking biblical truth in opposition to C. Peter Wagner's new doctrines and activities will simply be dismissed as demon-possessed with this "religious spirit"! Of course, the "status quo" that Wagner is referring to above means traditional biblical theology.
The Truth:
Contrary to Wagner's assertions that God is doing a "new thing," Scripture is clear:
"The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and THERE IS NO NEW THING UNDER THE SUN. IS THERE ANY THING WHER IT MAY BE SAID, SEE, THIS IS NEW? it hath been already of old time, which was before us." (Ecclesiastes 1:9-10)
And contrary to the neo-charismatic emphasis on "new wine" (which has been used to justify every wacky and bizarre new doctrine and practice for the past two decades), not every reference to "new wine" in Scripture is positive:
"The NEW WINE MOURNETH, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh." ("Isaiah 24:7)
"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. As they were increased, so they sinned against me: therefore will I change their glory into shame. They eat up the sin of my people, and they set their heart on their iniquity. And there shall be, like people, like priest: and I will punish them for their ways, and reward them their doings. For they shall eat, and not have enough: they shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: because they have left off to take heed to the LORD. Whoredom and wine and NEW WINE take away the heart." (Hosea 4:6-11)
In the New Testament the proper emphasis on "new wine" has to do with the New Covenant, accomplished by Christ's blood shed on the cross. The book of Hebrews, particularly chapters 8 and 9, teach this doctrine, as well as the words of Christ Himself on this topic in the four Gospels.

BY NOW WE PROBABLY ALL KNOW THAT WE CREATE OUR OWN SUFFERING, RIGHT?
I mean, we know that. We read it, we hear it, but just because we know something doesn't mean that information does us a lick of good. On days when I'm down (like absolutely everyone else on the planet from time to time), there is no reasoning my way out of it. I can choose to react differently to a given situation, of course.
But if I haven't been mindful? If I've slipped into autopilot and started repeating old patterns, indulging in knee-jerk reactions? There's no way that convincing myself that I chose this particular suffering (even though I did, dammit!) is going to help.
On days like this, I choose yoga. Heart openers especially seem to do the trick. Why? Because they get you out of that black hole that is your brain. The brain is a remarkable place; it can create the most dizzying fantasies; it can inspire you to achieve pretty much anything, and it can reassure you that you are every bit the bad-ass that you feel yourself to be on your best days.
This, of course, is when it uses its power for good.
But if it uses its power for evil? Oh-ho, enter the downward, irresistible spiral. That bright, positive outlook can suddenly swing the other way, tossing you into dark, dark...well, darkness. Suddenly there is no way out: you're lost, you're hopeless, and you really, really should have, by now, just given up already.
And you know what? We believe that nonsense.
We believe it because we love to believe the good stuff we think about ourselves; we love to believe our pep talks. But it just follows logically that, if we believe the good stuff, then we have to believe the bad stuff, too. Right?
Eh, not so fast. There's a difference between thinking and knowing. Thinking comes from the brain; knowing comes from the heart (or the soul/spirit/breath/prana/chi-whatever works for you). On your best days, you think and you know that you are light, radiant, and brilliant just as you are.
On your worst days, you just think you're scum. And you want to believe it because self-pity is comforting. But you know you're just indulging in the equivalent of the thumb-sucking pout that comforted you so much as a kid but that every adult around you could see right through.
So, the prescription for the crappy days? Yoga generally and heart openers, specifically: camel (ustrasana), upward-facing plank (purvottanasana), cobra (bhujangasana), upward-facing dog (urdhva mukha svanasana), wheel (urdhva dhanurasana), or any variation ther. You can make an entire practice out of the heart-but go slowly. Breaking a heart may happen quickly, but mending it takes time and gentleness.
Spend time in each pose and do them two or three times at a pop (note-a good warm up such as a few sun salutations may be a good idea; remember that on the other side of the heart is the spine and it likes to be warm before it will be moved).
And if you can stop thinking on top of the practice? Suddenly, it seems as though you'll crack open the sternum (in a good way, of course) and let the light in and the darkness out. That's where your focus can't help but go, and when the focus is on the heart, it can't be in the brain.

Or, as I prefer: the heart is where the magic happens; the heart is where you lived when you thought the stars were enchanted windows into another world and dragonflies were really fairy-like creatures who, if you could just get close enough, would transport you to a world where you could eat candy all day and stay up all night.
The brain is the asshole who brought science into the picture and tried to convince you that science and magic are mutually exclusive.
They're not.
Go with the heart.
Every time.

Humanity has caught the "ascension wave" and is riding it beautifully! It really is as though you had been standing in the surf, waiting for that special wave - that electrifyingly large one. Then it arrived. You caught it brilliantly, and now you are flying with it towards your most breathtaking and enthralling destination - surfer heaven, your awakening into Reality!
It does seem to many of you, to put it rather graphically, that "all hell is breaking loose" in many places across the planet. Do not be alarmed. The old order is merely in the process of disintegrating and pieces are flying every which way, as in an explosion. When the dust and debris settle, a gentle peace and an uplifting calm, the one for which so many have been hoping and praying, will prevail.
You are on course and on schedule for lives of joy and abundance, totally free from fear and worry as the disintegration of the old order makes way for the new order based most firmly on the Golden Rule (always treat others with the love and respect with which you would wish to be treated) which all will honor in every situation. The time for lying, manipulating, cheating, deceiving, and betrayal is ending, permanently.
The Love from which you were all created can no longer be denied or hidden as It wells up inside the hearts of all on Earth. Your nature is to share, and Love is for sharing abundantly and constantly, thus bringing the sweetness of divine contentment to all and into every interaction. You will be absolutely amazed when you discover the myriad ways in which you can share and bring unending happiness to one another. And then, of course, that amazement will dissolve into delighted appreciation as you remember that what is occurring is utterly natural, that nothing else is possible, because in Reality the divine Will is always present and completely effective. Nothing is missing, nothing is needed, all is as it should be in perfect untroubled harmony.
You are all dearly loved and have been ever since the moment of your creation when you were created in Love to experience and enjoy, through your sense of being, of consciousness, of awareness, an eternal existence of infinite happiness. And in truth you are still doing so. Nevertheless, that does not appear to be the case as you struggle and worry within the illusory environment that you invented and then constructed to experience life without Love. You imagined that there would be many satisfactory alternatives to the infinite perfection of Love, and you have been severely disappointed. Those of you who have had children or worked with them and have observed them growing up understand the sadness that occurs when you see them doing things which will cause them or others suffering, things that you have maybe warned them of, warnings which they chose either not to listen to or to ignore, because they believed that they knew better.
As you have been told before many times, and not only by those in the spiritual realms, beliefs can be very dangerous and often seem to have the power to mislead you mightily. You have all undergone or know someone who has undergone the shock of discovering that a belief to which they clung loyally and ferociously was not only misguided but quite wrong. The only Truth in which you can safely believe is the eternal Truth that is God. Within the illusion you have effectively hidden that under a cloak of darkness and ignorance, and then, from age to age and culture to culture, made up your own miserable, wrongheaded, and frequently immoral substitutes which were then proclaimed as dogma to which others were expected to pay homage.
Humanity is now, and very successfully, making a concerted and collective effort to discard the dogmas and wrongheaded doctrines that have for so long led to intense suffering and pain for many of you. All beliefs are being questioned, and rightly so, and unless convincing evidence supporting them is produced they are publicly shown to be erroneous, thus encouraging those who had allowed themselves to be ruled by them, and have had their basic freedoms trampled upon, to cast them aside and reclaim their rightful self-ownership.
If you wish to follow a system of rules and regulations, for whatever reason, as long as they have no deleterious effect on another, you should feel free to do so. But to impose or attempt to impose your beliefs and opinions on others by establishing rules and regulations that they must abide by is quite unconscionable.
God, your Father, created you FREE! And yet, within the illusion, you have attempted time and again to enslave one another. And of course the reason for trying to enslave others was born of fear. To be alone, small, insignificant, and abandoned in the vast universe, which the illusion appears to encompass, is terrifying. Miraculously, fortuitously, by the grace of God, the illusion is illusory! It cannot contain even one of you. However, as is your experience over the eons, you can choose, as you have done, to believe in it and thereby allow it to contain and control you.
Now the time has come for it to be discarded. The game is over, and you will return to awareness of your eternal and divine nature as essential aspects or, if you prefer, particles of God. No conscious entity is separated from its Source. It never can be, it never will be. It can only choose to be unaware of its true nature. And even that choice has a sell-by date at which point awareness, full consciousness must and will be re-established. When that happens, infinite joy will replace all emotions, feelings, and sensations that are not in alignment with it. In the end, only eternal joy is possible, because that is the Will of God for all of creation, and you are rapidly approaching that end, that inviolate sell-by date.
You are surrounded and enveloped in the field of divine Love, which is to dissolve back into nothingness the illusion in which it seems you have been trapped and imprisoned for so long. Focus on that truth whenever you go to your quiet inner space. Intend that all become aware of it, and relax in the certainty of your coming awakening.

The beginning of an interesting summer.
Beltane happened this week. And, here in Chicagoland's south suburbs, it was a phenomenally beautiful day. The weather hit the low 80s; there was not a cloud in the sky, and I could not fathom any reason whatsoever to stay indoors. Funny, when I was a kid, I would stay inside on bright, sunny days in Texas - as bright, sunny days seem to plague Texas, which sounds nice, except for that whole lack of rain and 6 months of 100+ degree weather. No, here in Chicago, a beautiful day of sunshine is to be celebrated with being outdoors. So, what did I do? I dug in the dirt.
Admittedly, while I attempt a garden every year in my backyard, it is a pretty half-assed attempt. I've done container gardens since we arrived in 2009, which is fine, but they're not really ideal for herbs and veggies, the things I prefer to grow. Flowers are nice and all, but I like to stock up on both culinary and witchy plants, and the idea of making them myself has always appealed to me. Most herbs that I want to keep around - basil, rosemary, lavender - do quite well in Texas. The dirt is fertile, but the temperatures are warm with lots of sun. If I keep them well-watered and provide enough shade so that they don't wither in mid-July, I can keep most herbs all year.
But, I'm not in Texas anymore, and I've never really mastered the Illinois growing season. Just when I think I've got it down and I decide something crazy like planting rosemary and basil in a pot outside in, oh, mid-April, here comes the blizzard of the century. So, finally, I waited. I was told to wait until around Mother's Day to plant. Mother's Day. I ask you. That's mid-May! That gives me maybe 2-3 months to "be a gardener".
Instead, I bucked the system and said "Wait til Beltane!" It paid off. Did I mention the gorgeous day? So, I went to Home Depot, using a lovely gift card from my mother - a Valentine's Day present - and went a little crazy. I got a raspberry vine that is supposedly self-pollinating, a hanging basket with strawberries, a habanero pepper, jalape~no pepper, 2 Roma tomato plants, 2 rosemary, 2 basil, and 2 sage. I already plan to add some cilantro plants and probably another of each of the peppers so that I can make salsa directly out of my garden.

But, here's the kicker: I actually put it all IN THE GROUND! I weeded a section of my back yard, which looked a whole lot like this before I started:
Overgrown with various flora that were not bad plants, mind you, but plants getting in the way of me feeling all gardeny. So, they had to go. Before you ask, yes, the daffodils and other bulb plants were saved. They were each dug up and transplanted to an equally overgrown area behind my shed. So, there's that. A little over an hour after I'd begun, my little patch looked something like this:
Dirt. Fertile, black, Illinois dirt. Rich and pretty odorous. Smelled like things would grow in it, as evidenced by the amount of plants I had to remove to get to said dirt. After I accomplished this, and drank a nice cold glass of water, I set about putting the plants in the actual ground. Now, I must say, I had no plan, and this was my first time...so you can't laugh about how haphazardly they're planted. Seriously, don't laugh. Ok...you can laugh a little.
But first... A bit of the spirituality of gardening, and the big impetus for why I finally decided to put plants in the ground where they belong.
At Ostara every year we decorate eggs with images and words describing our wishes for the coming year. Prosperity, joy, love, etc. These are typically the wishes of most people when making wishes. And, they're typically ours. Except for this year. This was the year where Partner and I decided that we were going to get all specific on the Universe's butt. (Yeah, that didn't come out the way I'd hoped either, but it's there in black and white and I'm not deleting it.)
This year Partner wished for some pretty specific things in his career, literally writing out the words on the egg rather than drawing a pretty pretty picture. I did the same. I wished for a closer connection to deity. To fall back in love with my spirituality and to truly find a way to believe wholeheartedly and fully of spirit in the Divine, in magic, in the realm of spirits and Other Beings. To hear the flap of faery wings. To smell the perfume of a spirit as she wanders. To see God/dess/SUPERIOR BEING's hand in creation and to stop doubting. I felt that this merited action.
And, yes, typically these egg wishes get buried in the back yard...in a pretty unceremonial hole in the ground. But, something urged me this year to let the wishes grow something, to literally let them feed the earth, to be the food for my magic and my belly, and to ingest that fertile, verdant spell.
So... I did.
All the plants and Ostara eggs in one place.
I used my pestle to mush the eggs up and put a bit in each of the holes. So, a bit of each wish will become food for each plant, which will, in turn, become food and magic for me - with the exception o the strawberries, as they were already in a hanging basket and didn't need my assistance. After all was said and done, here was my garden!
I'm all proud and stuff. Annnnnd now a different angle:
It felt good, too, the digging. It didn't take long for me to ditch the spade all together and use my fingers to dig out the holes and fill in the holes. That tiny bit of connection brought me a feeling of closeness with my surroundings. I've not felt as connected with nature here as I probably should. Spent time in it on nature trails for exercise, yes, but not so much getting to know it.
Baby steps and all that, but I'm excited to see what the summer will bring.

COUNCIL OF THE ELOHIM - PRAYER TO REMOVE THE OLD MATRIX 4-24/2014
The day many of you have been waiting for has finally arrived. The Grand Cardinal Cross. What will you do with such energies shifting your reality? Have you taken heed of the one simple fact, that no outside energy can save you unless you take responsibility of your own reality? Change is an imminent aspect of life, as much as evolution of the spirit and the soul.
How many of you are simply waiting to be saved when in fact all that needs to be done is to change your perception from being separate from the all into knowing you are always as one. You are all creator having a physical experience and your time for remembrance is now. Be not afraid of the power you posses. Instead embrace your divinity, embrace your frailty and in doing so embrace your humanity.
Oh beloved children of the light, open your hearts, open your wings and take flight. See, feel, know the divine in you, know the divine that you are, remember the divine that you are. Be not separate any more, be not alone any more and once again embrace the All. Realize how much love surrounds you and all the love you are. Be once again in touch with your family at every level of existence, physical and nonphysical. You are all one and yet beautiful individuals. Remember the saying "Walking a mile in someone else's shoes" at any given time you are all doing it simultaneously.
Allow all this windows in time, in existence to help you speed up the process and yet know you do not need any outside stimuli or help as you already are, YOU ARE GODS. You bow down to no one and yet you still need to bow down to all as you are the All. Sweetness in the knowing and in the being the human you were born to be but a greater sweetness when the remembrance takes hold of you when you fully remember you are a human-god!
As this very moment as this words are being written a tremendous upgrade in the energy of your entire planet is taking place. A pulse, a wave of light from the core of the very heart of the divine Creator has reached you all. Traveling at the speed of Gods thought it is an instantaneous effect. It was all divinely timed and it is also through the sacred heart of Divine Mother herself that in unison with her higher aspects you are being infused with holiness.
As you open your hearts a sacred whisper will take place at the very core of your soul "Awaken Holy One and know you are God" Do not wait any more, take charge of your reality, live in love. Transcend your old reality and awaken to the new. Take responsibility and detach from the matrix of old.
The prayer below it is to be said with determination and the highest love you can master. Not to be recited shyly or hesitation as you are now being given the power to free your selves and allow remembrance once again. Repeat as necessary and know with each time it is recited the bond of the old is shattered.
PRAYER TO RELEASE THE OLD MATRIX

THE REDE AND THE CHARGE
The Wiccan Rede is a moral guide to which Wiccans hold themselves
accountable. Similar to an earlier writing by Aleister Crowley, "Do what thou
wilt shall be the whole of the Law," was transmuted to read, "And ye harm
none, do what thou wilt," and is now the most commonly accepted version of
the Wiccan Law. It was adopted because it represents some of the most
fundamental Wiccan principles, having made its way into the following poem.
The Law is about self-accountability, self-responsibility, and above all,
self-awareness. It speaks of the need to be more aware of the fact that what
we do affects other people and living things. Wicca does not restrict us to a set
of defined guidelines. We are of our own command, but the underlying principle
is that what we do should not hurt others.
A frequently overlooked principle of the Rede is that harming none
includes not harming ourselves. Even knowing this, many Wiccans do not take
an active part in keeping themselves from harm. We may not inflict intentional
physical pain upon ourselves, but we would do better to take care of our bodies.
Once the body is exhausted beyond its means, the spark of life cannot
continue.

THE CHARGE OF THE GODDESS
Listen to the words of the Great Mother, she who was of old also called among
mortals Artemis, Astarte, Athene, Dione, Melusine, Aphrodite, Kali Ma,
Cerridwen, Isis, Arianrhod, Brigid, and by many other names:
"Whenever you have need of anything, once in the month, and better it be
when the Moon is full, then shall ye assemble in some secret place and call
upon the spirit of me who is Queen of all the Witches. There shall ye assemble,
ye who are fain to learn all sorcery yet have not won its deepest secrets; to

Chinese astrology associates horses with male and the sheep with its female characteristics as its complementary sign. The most important of the WICCAN SUPPLIES you will have are the foundation pieces of your altar.
Altars generally have items on them that represent the five elements of earth, air, fire, water and spirit, which may take many forms. Here are some of the essential basic WICCAN SUPPLIES for your altar:

THE ATHAME - a ritual double edged metal dagger with a wooden handle. As its purpose is to mark sacred space, it is "never" used to cut anything physical. Athames are associated with the element of air and male energy,

THE CHALICE - a symbol of the feminine, it is usually a stemmed goblet. The chalice is associated with water, psychic ability and the subconscious.

ALTAR BELL - generally a small metal hand bell used to clear sacred space, and punctuate parts of ritual or spellwork. Bells are associated with the element of air.

ALTAR TILE - also known as a pentacle or peyton. The altar tile is used to open elemental gateways, evoke the divine and to protect and bless ritual tools and food. The elemental representation can be either earth or spirit.

ALTAR CLOTH - protects the altar from stray wax, embers, dirt, and grime. The average altar cloth is traditionally black however when celebrating a Sabbat, Esbat, or doing specific spellwork, a colour that is representational of the event being observed can be used.

THE WAND - wands are usually made of wood and are used to project or direct energy to a specific area, object, or person. The elemental correspondence is fire.

THE BESOM - A besom is a ritual broom used to clear the residual energy from a space being prepared for ritual, and is one of the only Wiccan supplies that is used for ritual, but may not be found on the altar itself.

CAULDRON - Used to burn, brew and mix things, it represents all the various elements, depending on how it is used. When used to burn offerings, it represents fire; used to brew a potion, it represents water; used for incense, air; and a cauldron of abundance, like a cornucopia, is associated with the element of earth. Usually made of iron and standing on three legs, the cauldron represents the feminine.

CANDLES - there are usually three candles on the altar: one black, representing the Goddess; one white, representing the God, and a third, usually also white, for lighting. Candles represent the element of fire.

A CENSER - this can be any flame-proof vessel used for burning incense. Some censers are cauldron like, and are hung on chains or suspended in tripods. A censer represents the element of air.
Although further items may be added to the altar according to the work being completed or the time of year, these are the essential basic WICCAN SUPPLIES to be found on Pagan and Wiccan alters.

The Dragon Boat Festival is held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which is traditionally an unlucky month. To ensure luck for the coming year, people compete in egg standing contests. It is believed that making an egg stand on this day, especially at mid-day, will bring luck.
CAN YOU REALLY MAKE AN EGG STAND UP?
It is possible to make the egg-stand up; though many people try to cheat by tampering with the eggs. Taking a raw egg and placing it straight up is doable though an urban legend claims it is only possible on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

The eminent scholar and mystic of fifteenth century Egypt, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, tells the story of an early mystic:
One night I fulfilled a number of blessings on the Prophet and I fell asleep.
I was dwelling in a room, and lo, the Prophet came to me through the door, and the whole room was lit up. Then he moved towards me and said: "Give me the mouth that has blessed me so often that I may kiss it." And my modesty would not let him kiss my mouth; so I turned away my face, and he kissed my cheek. Then I woke trembling from sleep and my wife who was by my side awoke, and lo, the house was fragrant with his scent, and the scent of musk from his kiss remained on my cheek about eight days. My wife noticed the scent every day.
This story beautifully illustrates the centrality of the Prophet Muhammad (God bless him and give him peace) to Islamic piety. For hundreds of years Muslims have meditated on and lucidly expressed their deep love for the Chosen Prophet (God bless him and give him peace); they have collected and compiled every available account concerning him, produced immense commentaries detailing his every feature, from the length of his hair and the color of his complexion, to the way he walked, slept, and laughed, and have composed lyrical poetry giving voice to their immense longing for him.
The Prophet (God bless him and give him peace) said, "The person nearest to me is the one who asks for blessings upon me the most." Throughout history Muslims have sought continual presence with the Prophet (God bless him and give him peace), manifesting their love for him by adhering to God's command: "bless him and pray for peace upon him" (The Qur'an, Sura al-Ahzab). In the spirit of this command, Muslim scholars have produced prayer manuals of the utmost beauty and eloquence. These manuals most frequently consist of collections of prayers, supplications, and praise from the Qur'an and hadith, as well as original compositions. Of these prayer manuals, perhaps none have been more successful and widespread than Muhammad b. Sulayman al-Jazuli's masterwork Dala'il al- Khayrat wa Shawariq al-Anwar fi Dhikr al-Salat 'ala al- Nabi al-Mukhtar (The Guide to Blessings and the Advent of Light in Blessing the Chosen Prophet). Composed in Morocco in the fifteenth century, Dala'il al-Khayrat quickly spread throughout the Muslim world, from Turkey, to East Africa, to Sumatra.
WHO WAS AL-JAZULI? Why was Dala'il al-Khayrat so popular? How have Muslims interacted with and experienced the text, both as a performative act and as a physical object? By exploring these questions, it is hoped that the reader may gain a fuller understanding and greater appreciation of this extraordinary text, its author, and its inspiration.
THE CONTEXT AND FORMATION OF DALA'IL AL-KHAYRAT: THE LIFE OF MUHAMMAD B. SULAYMAN AL-JAZULI
At the dawn of the fifteenth century, the Marinid dynasty had ruled Morocco for over one hundred and fifty years. The early Marinid period was marked by military campaigns and vigorous architectural activity. They built a variety of structures: new urban centers, zawiyas, fortresses, and mosques. However, their most marvelous architectural contributions were madrasas: four at Fez and one at Sal'e. In the oldest of these madrasas, Madrasat al-Saffarin in Fez, young Muhammad b. Sulayman al-Jazuli received instruction in the religious sciences.
By the mid-fifteenth century, Moroccan society was in chaos. Corruption and immorality were rampant in both the cities and the countryside. Port cities along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts fell to the crusading Portuguese. Due to internal strife and foreign military pressure, the Marinid state began to fragment. Morocco was in need of religious reform and reorientation. It was precisely at this trying time that al-Jazuli introduced his remarkable work Dala'il al- Khayrat.
Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad b. 'Abd al-Rahman b. Abi Bakr b. Sulayman al-Jazuli al-Samlali was born to a sharif [a descendent of the Prophet Muhammad] family in the southern Moroccan village of Tankarat in the early fifteenth century. He belonged to the Simlala, an important subtribe of the Sanhaja Berbers that lived on the Sus River plain between the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains. Little detail is known about his life. However, his biographer, Muhammad al-Mahdi al-Fasi (d.), mentions in his work Mumti' al-Asma' a number of anecdotes and pithy expressions, giving a glimpse into the religious world of early modern Morocco.
As a young scholar al-Jazuli left his homeland of Jazula because inter-tribal conflicts made serious study impossible. He traveled to Fez and enrolled at Madrasat al-Saffarin, where his room is still shown to visitors. In Fez he memorized works of usul al-fiqh and Maliki law, such as Ibn al-Hajib's Mukhtasr al-Far'i and Sahnun's Al-Mudawwana al-Kubra. He also met the famous jurist and mystic Sheikh Ahmad Zarruq. As a youth he became known for his piety. Al-Fasi relates a stunning example of al-Jazuli's detachment from worldly concerns:
While he was attending the madrasa, he secluded himself in a house and no one else would enter. This news reached his father who thought the youth's persistence in barring others from entering was because he was hiding wealth, so he set out to visit his son. He requested permission to enter his son's house and was given leave. When he entered he saw written all over the walls: "Death, Death, Death..." He understood what his son was up to. He reproached himself, saying, "Look where he is and look where we are!" Then he left his son and returned home.
Several accounts detail al-Jazuli's inspiration in writing Dala'il al-Khayrat. According to al-Fasi, he collected Dala'il al-Khayrat from The reason for al-Jazuli's writing Dala'il al-Khayrat... was that one day he was late for his prayers, even though it was his custom to seek the approval of God the Exalted by not delaying a prayer beyond the earliest possible time for its performance. When he arose to make his ablutions, however, he was unable to find anything with which to take water out of the well. This preoccupied him greatly and he was very annoyed. While he was in this state a young girl caught sight of him from a high place and said, "Who are you, uncle?" The sheikh then told her about himself, hoping that she would give him a bucket and thus ease his cares and worries. Instead the girl exclaimed, "You are the one whom people praise greatly, yet you are unable to take water from a well in order to purify yourself !"
Then she came down from that high place and spat into the well while reciting the Name of the Lord of Creation. No sooner had she done so than water tasting as sweet as the sweetest sugar poured forth from the well until it spilled over the face of the earth as a miracle from the One who rolls up the scroll of time. The sheikh made his ablution and marveled at this splendid miracle. When he finished, he swore by God Almighty that the girl should reveal to him how she had acquired this great rank. "By making constant prayers on the Best of Creation (may God bless and preserve him) to the number of breaths and heartbeats (bi-'adad al-anfas wa al-daqa'iq)," she replied.
So al-Jazuli resolved at that moment to write a book about the excellence of prayers on behalf of the Chosen Prophet and to include in it many transmitted texts from the mine of prophecy and from those who have drowned in the sea of the effusion of God's abundant generosity. All of this (which was due to what he perceived in this great miracle) would not have been possible had it not been for this girl, who was devoted to reciting prayers on the Adornment of the Last Day (zayn al-qiyama).
Al-Jazuli took the Shadhili tariqa from Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad Amghar al-Saghir (d.) of Ribat Tit-n- Fitr. After taking part in the resistance to the Portuguese at Tangier in, he went into seclusion (khalwa). Some historians claim that he worshiped in isolation for fourteen years; while others maintain that he traveled east for sometime, reciting Dala'il al-Khayrat twice each morning to the Prophet (God bless him and give him peace) in Medina.Upon his reemergence in, al-Jazuli established a zawiya at the Atlantic port city of Asafi.
Al-Jazuli was "frequent in reciting litanies (awrad), observant of God most High in all his states, not exceeding the boundaries God established, and exerting himself in following the Book of God and the example of his Messenger (God bless him and give him peace)." He founded the Shadhiliyya Jazuliyya order, with Dala'il al-Khayrat at its core, and over,disciples received spiritual training (tarbiya) at his hands.
Later writers describe the nature of al-Jazuli's relationship with the Prophet (God bless him and give him peace): there mixed, in his person, "the two loves"-the love one feels for the Prophet due to religion, and the love one feels for one's kinsfolk (mahabba al-diniyya wa al-tiniyya).Al-Jazuli died in while prostrating during the morning prayer, the victim of poisoning. He was later buried at Riyadh al-'Arus in Marrakesh. Known in the local dialect as "Sidi Ben Sliman," he is one of the seven patron saints of Marrakesh. He left Dala'il al-Khayrat as a testament to his immense love and longing for the Prophet (God bless him and give him peace):
O God, I believed in Muhammad but did not see him; do not deprive me in the Gardens of his vision. Bestow his company upon me and cause me to die in his religion. Let me drink from his pool a quenching, pleasant, delightful drink after which we shall never thirst again. You are powerful over everything. O God, convey to the soul of Muhammad my greetings and peace. O God, as I believed in Muhammad but did not see him, do not deprive me in the Gardens of his vision.
