The Oldest Magic Shop In America

The Oldest Magic Shop in the United States* opened it's doors in 1873. Located at 493 Sixth Avenue NYC, NY, it was started by two brothers, Francis and Antonio Martinka. Their original shop had 5000 square feet of room with a showroom in the front and a small theatre and workshop in the back. Martinka & Co. was different from many modern magic shops though. They not only sold magic, they built magic. Everything from small props of wood, glass and metal to large stage illusions were crafted in their shop. They possessed a skill that is rarely seen today.
Their shop was frequented by amateurs and professionals alike. The top names of the day, Robert Heller, Alexander Herrmann, William Robinson, Carter the Great, Harry Houdini and Harry Kellar purchased items from Martinkas. By 1902 it became the hang out for regular NY magicians and that's when Dr. W. Golden Mortimer and Dr. Saram Ellison proposed establishing an official organization for magicians. May 10, 1902 The Society of American Magicians was born in the back room of Martinkas Magic Shop.
By 1917, the Martinka brothers decided retirement was in order. They had been running this shop and a previous one in Germany for more than 50 years. They chose to sell the shop and it was purchased by a young up and coming magician by the name of Charles Carter. Known professionally as Carter the Great, he had become a great customer to the Martinkas. Practically his entire touring illusion show was built in the back rooms of the Martinka shop. Charles Carter had been touring for ten years and was feeling the need to settle down. Purchasing the magic shop would be the ideal thing for him.
Charles Carter had grand plans for Martinkas. According to the Carter the Great book by Mike Caveney, Carter planned to open Martinka Magic Shops all across the country. He even had plans to open a large theatre next to Martinkas to feature acts on the weekends and showcase illusions during the week. But none of it was to be and within a year Carter was looking for a buyer. He was loosing money in the magic shop business. Carter also had pulled in a partner after his initial purchase of the company, Alf Wilton. Mr. Wilton would eventually buy Carter out and get involved with a new group of people, John Collins, Frances Martinka, Theo Hardeen and Harry Houdini. The year was 1919.
What did Houdini do with Martinka's you might wonder. He purchased Hornmanns Magic Company from Otto Hornmann, and merged the two businesses together. Beyond that he did precious little. He was busy with his Film Company and history shows what a debacle that was. He sold his 51 percent controlling stock to Alf Wilton after only nine months as President of Martinka & Co..
Frank Ducrot
In 1920, the business moved to 304 West 34th St. in NYC, where it would remain for many years. The next owner, was Frank Ducrot, a popular New York magician. He hired Daisy White to work the front counter and to act as secretary and sometimes as his magic assistant.
Frank Ducrot died of a heart attack in 1938 and the shop was purchased by Al Flosso, and the name changed to The Flosso-Hornmann Magic Shop. Al Flosso was an old time vaudeville and popular Coney Island performer. He knew everyone in magic and he kept the shop bustling right up until his death in 1976 at the age of 80. His son Jack Flosso eventually took over the shop and just as his father had done, kept the spirit of magic alive and kicking in NYC.
The Flosso-Hornmann Magic Shop was a landmark that was visited by professional and amatuer magicians as well as famous Hollywood celebrities and other famous personalities. In 2000, Jackie Flosso sold the shop to Ted Bogusta in the hopes of retiring. In late Sept 2003, Jackie Flosso went to be with Francis & Antonio Martinka, Frank Ducrot, Charles Carter, Daisy White, Harry Houdini and Al Flosso. He was 77 when he died.
Today, Martinka's Magic Shop is an online magic shop and auction house. And I just found out that they have an actual shop in Midland Park NJ, the address is listed on the website. I think they are most famous today for their online auctions of antique magic, which I must admit have had some incredible items offered! You can see them at www.martinka.com
*I understand there is some debate as to Martinkas Magic Shop being the 'oldest'. It certainly has to be the longest running magic shop in America.

"That's what I thought," St. Clair says when I don't respond. He shakes his head. His dark messy hair has a few curls in it today. It's quite breathtaking, really. If there were an Olympics competition in hair, St. Clair would totally win, hands down. Ten-point-oh. Gold medal."
"I shrug. "It's only been a week. It's not a big deal."
"Let's go over the facts one more time," Josh says. "This is your first weekend away from home?"
"Yes."
"Your first weekend without parental supervision?"
"Yes."
"Your first weekend without parental supervision in Paris? And you want to spend it in your bedroom? Alone?" He and Rashmi exchange pitying glances. I look at St. Clair for help, but find him staring at me with his head tilted to the side."
"What?" I ask, irritated. "Soup on my chin? Green bean between my teeth?"
"St. Clair smiles to himself. "I like your stripe," he finally says. He reaches out and touches it lightly. "You have perfect hair."
AUTHOR: Stephanie Perkins
FROM GOODREADS: Anna is looking forward to her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. Which is why she is less than thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris-until she meets 'Etienne St. Clair. Smart, charming, "beautiful," 'Etienne has it all...including a serious girlfriend.
But in the City of Light, wishes have a way of coming true. Will a year of romantic near-misses end with their long-awaited French kiss?
NOTES: As mentioned when I originally made plans to read this book, I tend to have 'meh' experiences with 'cute, light romances'. As far as cheerful readability goes, however, Perkins bested the average by a couple of standard deviations. The narrative, while not literary, contains a lot of detail and is both visually and emotionally interesting. The setting-Paris-is irresistible, naturally, and the primary characters are all nuanced, so there's quite a lot to like about Anna's tale.
The protagonist herself is a believable teenager. She's also the kind of person who makes us shy, nervous types afraid to go out in public; she's got a sharp eye for detail, especially where quirks are involved, and her judgment is immediate and ruthless. Like most of us girls, she finds it easy to overlook the awkward side of a cute boy; she does not, however, grant passes to anyone else. That didn't kill her likability factor, but experiencing her thoughts frequently made me uncomfortable.
The latter was true not only because of her judgmentalism, but because her response to handsome boys went straight to lust. When she thought 'Etienne's (clothed) backside was "better than Notre-Dame", I nearly put the book down (where. does. one. even. "start?!" Get some artistry in your soul, child!) Much of her admiration of his body was relatively mild, but it fixated on heading to bed, and the book all but states that teenage sex-given a few standards and precautions-is normal and healthy and good.
That message is exceptionally common in young adult fiction. It is preached and defended with a passion that tends to inspire internet witch hunts against anyone who disagrees loudly enough. Granted, the preachers have some valid points. There is sex in a lot of teen It is also naive-and irresponsible-to presume that teens are emotionally and physically prepared to handle the consequences of sexual activity. That any reasoning in favor of abstinence is necessarily prudish. That pregnancy is the worst that can happen. That because tolerably wealthy kids with tolerably supportive parents can often get away with sexual license, the same is true down the social scale. That the prevalence and nature of sexual discussion and sexual content in entertainment has no harmful effect on amount and type of sexual experimentation.
Excursus ended. But here's an addendum: making out in public, while it may be pleasurable for the couple, is distracting and awkward for everyone else in the vicinity, no matter how well disposed toward young lovers. Parents, for the love of human decency if not of God, please endow your offspring with some respect for the word "inappropriate".
It more or less goes without saying that those of us with a religious basis for morality cannot help but disapprove some of Anna's thoughts and actions. Anna is an interesting read for someone brewed and steeped in traditional monotheistic religion, however: she's completely disconnected, so far post-Christian that she's simply pagan. She interacts with Catholic art with no religious feeling whatsoever, wrestles with the need for forgiveness without conscious conviction of its being objectively right, and devotes herself to her bronze gods-lust, friendship, cinema-with nothing to direct or temper the mood of the moment.
I found it disorienting to be in her head. And yet, I liked her; she loved her young brother, offered real compassion to 'Etienne when he needed it, and showed concern for Meredith's feelings. I loved that she would paint a chocolate mustache on herself to make a friend smile, that she had sensitivity enough to eventually want to forgive and be forgiven. I couldn't help taking some satisfaction in her punching Amanda for calling Meredith names. And I would have enjoyed more in-text development of her interest in cinema, which was fascinating.
'Etienne, the hero, is adorable in his own way: short and appealing and charismatic. The constant references to his hotness didn't do much for me, but the hurt in him did; I wound up wanting to mother him. Like most charismatic boys, he wasn't great at treating female emotions respectfully, though he wanted to be. His waffling was unkind to both Anna and Ellie. To be fair, of course, he did have other serious concerns on his mind at the time.
Anna's father merits mention as an obvious satire on author Nicholas Sparks, at least regarding his writing career. The (very) little I know of Sparks personally is all to the good; I have no reason to believe he's anything like the lame jerk Anna considers her father to be. Regarding the James Ashley novels, however, I was amused and sometimes a little miffed by the disdain. While I've avoided Sparks' oeuvre aside from "A Walk to Remember" for reasons not unlike Anna's (love stories that end tragically in cancer, really? sigh...), I'm forever grateful to the man for humanizing a backward church girl for the reading public. I will always love Jamie Sullivan.
Even James Ashley was allowed some humanity, though, and Perkins' ultimate success is in the depth and detail of her characters. She also made me want to go to Paris, if only to see Notre Dame.

Relevance Of Christian Prophetic Guidance

By Nora Jennings
In the scripture by John, Jesus Christ mentioned that a child will never do anything except if the similar thing is done by his father first. Once the dad does something, the child emulates his actions. Christian prophetic guidance creates a vital effect on the trust of a believer in God as it indicates to them what He plans for. When they get an impression of what is demanded by God they are capable of building a tougher spiritual basis.Visionary disclosures are experienced by several people in the everyday life. For instance some people get to hear from God through bible reading. Others usually get prophetic dreams when they sleep as others get visionary ideas. Some even claim to talk and walk with the Lord as they get insights and guidance on His plans. These revelations assist in strengthening the faith of almost every Christian who gets them.
The gift of prophecy is not a necessity for a believer to get to talk to God or even just live a life that is supernatural. It is said that all of the children of God have the power of hearing from Him. They can activate this power by creating a strong relationship between them and God through engaging in a lot of prayer. Close relations with God will help anyone to achieve prophetic guidance at all times.
Christians need to stay on track in having an effective Christian lifestyle that will help in bringing glory to God and also drawing more people to God. They should foster an environment that will enable them to continue with their spiritual growth and their walk towards God.
There are particular dynamics that assist Christians to lead a paranormal way of living. Firstly they should know how to show people how much they adore God; they are required to know how to show how they love Jesus and they ought to have the influence of the Divine spirit. They should acquire knowledge on how to worship God at any period and anywhere they are without categorizing the non-spiritual and spiritual spaces.
Any person who desires to get prophetic guidance from the Supreme Being needs to create a personal relationship with God. By allowing the Holy Spirit into their hearts and developing intimate relations with God they are able to lead a good lifestyle. In this manner God will communicate with them on a personal level thus making their faith strong.
The style in which they extend the gospel should be ordinary. Jesus too used ordinary methods of spreading the word so that numerous individuals were capable of relating. Christians should extend the word to others in a method that is suitable and applicable in the culture at that moment. At least some people ought to be capable of changing their lives by seeing them.
Most of all, they should learn how to filter their activities. Before they do anything they should make sure that it is right before His eyes. They should know that there is always a witness sent from God that is watching them. By engaging in all the above activities they will be able to witness how important the visionary guidance is to their spiritual lives.

The Ka
Posted by

/ 6:12 PM /
The Ka, also meaning double, was a complex concept for the Ancient Egyptians and in it's most basic understanding, was a spirit double of a person. The hieroglyph for the Ka is are pair of upward arms and symbolised an embrace. To put ones arms around another person in the Ka embrace was symbolic of imparting vital energy into that person. When Atum created his children Shu and Tefnut he held them in the Ka embrace to transfer to them his divine energy.
In one respect the Ka is an etheric body of an individual; the Ka is the life force that comes from the Creator and is able to be transfers through one person to another by means of physical contact.
Also, to go to ones Ka also meant to die, suggesting that their spiritual body, Ka, awaited them at the Otherworld.
Basically your Ka is Neteru's (or The Creators) life force within every living thing. This life force is constantly flowing through and between us, being transferred. Each individual has their justified amount of life source (or it would all run out and you would die) and this speical life source is your individual double. Some say that when you die the life source Ka seeps out of you and this is where your consciousness meets with the Ka in the weighing of the hearts. Even though both the individual double and the life source are both Ka, the later is also referred to a Sekhem, meaning power and is used by many healers and magicians still today (calling the energy Heka)..

Being Human The Birthright Of The Human Soul

BEING HUMAN
THE BIRTHRIGHTS OF THE HUMAN SOULANDREW HENNESSEY
IF WE MANAGE TO AVOID BECOMING AN ANIMALISED AND DISNEY RELATIVE OF DONALD DUCK OR SKIPPY THE BUSH KANGAROO AFTER WE MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM OUR BADLY BEHAVING PRISON PLANET WHERE DO US HUMAN SOULS HANG OUT AND HOW.
IN FACT WHAT MAKES US HUMAN SOULS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
HERE IS AN ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP UNIQUELY HUMAN SOUL THEMES IN CONTRA-DISTINCTION FROM WHAT IT MIGHT BE TO BE AN ANIMAL.
I KNOW SOME DOLPHINS AND LARGER MAMMALS AND ALIENS PROBABLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS TO HAVE THESE ISSUES MENTIONED BELOW INNATE TO THEIR SPIRIT - SO I AM NOT NECESSARILY PROMOTING ANTHROPOMORPHISM, BUT AM ATTEMPTING TO GET TO THE TRUTH OF WHAT MAKES A HUMAN SOUL.
SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS AMONGST GREGARIOUSLY CO-OPERATING PEOPLE OF HUMAN PERSUASION REQUIRES TO BE INTELLIGENTLY AND CREATIVELY FACILITATIVE AND FACILITATED. TO BE PHYSICALLY AND SPIRITUALLY BENEFICIAL TO SELF AND SOCIETY IN THE LONGTERM, IT NEEDS EITHER CREATIVE OR RECREATIVE LICENSE IN A SAFE AND DEFENDED PLACE.
CREATIVE CONSCIOUSNESS NEEDS TO BE AT EASE AND OF GOOD AESTHETIC AND RELATIVELY FREE FROM PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL DISTORTION AND DISEASE.
IT WOULD ASPIRE TO PRODUCING PERSONAL AND SOCIAL BENEFITS;
E.G. 'SOCIAL REWARDS TO PARTIES', 'THE FACILITATION OF SPECULATIVE SUCCESS', 'EXCELLENCE OF CREATIVE CAUSATION IN; TOOLS, TOOL USE AND CREATIVE SKILLS, PROCESSES, MATERIALS AND FACILITIES. AN END PRODUCT OR OUTPUT OF; ART, ARTEFACT OR SERVICE THAT FULFILS A RESPONSE TO GROUP, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL NEEDS, [TAKING ACCOUNT OF INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL SOCIAL AND PERSONAL CHANGES AND MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN THESE.]
Human Consciousness as thus far speculated has two aspects that produce relatively archetypal masculine and feminine interactions. These have unique psychological aptitudes and a qualitative capacity and strategy for the building the bridges and relationships with activities needed to sustain life and a quality of society.
THERE ARE SIMULTANEOUSLY TWO QUALITIES OF TEMPORAL CONSCIOUSNESS THAT CAN MANIFEST IN ANY GIVEN BOUNDED HUMAN SOCIETY. A PLANAR, NON-LINEAR, NON-LOCAL, MULTI-LOCAL/DIMENSIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS E.G. RVING AND TELEPORTING MULTIDIMENSIONAL IDENTITY AND, A LINEAR CHRONOLOGICAL AND LOCALISED, WHOLLY LOCATED IN RELATIVE TIME SPACE, IE. A CAPACITY FOR CONSCIOUSNESS WITHIN THREE DIMENSIONS OF ANY SPACE TIME CONTINUUM OR SOCIAL AREA.
WITHIN THAT BOUNDED SOCIETY AND ENUMERATED LIST OF SOULS IN OUR CO-OPERATING SOUL GROUP LIST WE COMMUNALLY
MATERIAL DESCRIPTIONS OF SOCIAL ITEMS REQUIRE NUMBERS AND AGREEMENTS. WITH A SENSITIVE AND REGULATED APPRECIATION OF HOW TO FACILITATE BEING, CONTRIBUTORS MAY MORE FREELY ENJOY THE CIVILISED ARTS AVAILABLE WITHOUT TOXICITY, IN OUR CIVILISATION.
IN TERMS OF OUR MANY FORMS AND STATES OF ENERGY AND BEING MANY DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN STATES OF BEING CAN NATURALLY ARISE.
FOR EXAMPLE: THE PRIMARY ATTRIBUTES OF HARDNESS OR POWER OF AN ENERGY SHELL AND ITS NATURAL INSENSITIVITY TO ISSUES OF ADAPTATION TO MERGER AND NURTURE MAY IMPINGE ON A SOFTNESS OF SPIRIT SHELL AND ITS VULNERABILITY TO DAMAGE. THERE ARE ISSUES OF MERGER BETWEEN BEINGS, MOLECULAR-TYPE MINI SOUL GROUP SPECIALISATIONS, THE TYPOLOGY AND CLASSIFICATION OF SYNERGISTIC INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SOUL TYPES, COMMENSAL, SYMBIOTIC ADAPTATIONS ETC
MANY BEINGS COULD BE FACILITATED BY GREATER MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL COMMUNE THAN IS CURRENTLY BEING ACHIEVED WITH THE USE OF A GENERAL SYSTEMS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM.
THE COMPLEX ARRANGEMENTS AND NESTING POSSIBLE FOR THE FACILITATION OF MIND AND SOUL WOULD BECOME TOXIC WITHOUT AN AGREED FRAME OF SECURE EMPIRICAL REFERENCE.
WITHIN SUCH SOCIAL AND PERSONAL STRUCTURES AND RELATIONSHIPS, HOWEVER, THE NEED FOR SECURE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SPIRITUAL STANDARDS ARE IMPORTANT IF WE ARE TO RETAIN WHAT IT IS TO BE HUMAN. FREEDOM FROM TOXIC UNHUMAN CONTAMINATION AND MUTATIONAL INFLUENCE FROM THE MORE UNREGULATED CHAOS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY WOULD BE ESSENTIAL TO FINE TUNE CREATIVITY TO PURER LEVELS OF RELATIVE HUMAN LOVE.
IN SUCH A FACILITATIVE SOUL GROUP AND SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT, BEING IN THE PRESENCE OF SUBSTANTIVE OTHERS, CAN FACILITATE ONESELF TO SELF-DEREGULATE AND THEN TO RE-EMERGE MORE SUBSTANTIAL RESPONSES AND STRATEGIES AND SOLUTIONS TO OLDER FAILED OR REDUNDANT STRATEGIES WITHIN THE SOUL GROUP AND SOCIETY.
FROM SUCH DIVERSE CONCOURSE WITHIN SOME SORT OF SYSTEMATIC IDEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK CAN COME THE NON-TOXIC AND DIVERSE FUSIONS OF TRUE ECUMENICAL CULTURALISM - FREELY AVAILABLE TO AND UNDERSTANDABLE BY EVERYONE IN THE SOULGROUP COMMUNITY.
BY THE USE OF AND AWARENESS OF THE FOLLOWING ATTRIBUTES, PROCESSES AND TOOLS WE DEFINE AND MAINTAIN OURSELVES AS BEING BEYOND THE ANIMAL.
ADAPTED AND EDITED FROM THE HUMAN LAWS AND SUBLAWS OF DRS. MILANOVICH AND MCCUNE (1998) ARE AN AUGMENTED LIST [HENNESSEY, 2008] OF HUMAN PROCESSES THAT DEFINE US AS HUMAN.

Common human processes of a universal and Law-like nature.
There are approximately 15 Universal processes with lawlike properties, and 28 sub-laws, that describe ways in which cause and effect and society and souls are The Universal Laws are all inter-
In this way our other Cosmic soul manifests in this universe as an effect of its locality and context.
Our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions are all forms of energy created by the driving force of our othercosmos soul.. What we think, feel, say, and do in each moment comes back to us to create our realities. Energy moves in a circle, so what goes around comes around. The combined thoughts, feelings, words and actions of everyone on the planet creates our collective consciousness, it creates the world we see before us.
The exciting news is, because our thoughts, feelings, words and actions create the world around us, we have the power to create a world of peace, harmony and abundance. In order to do this, it is essential that we learn to control our thoughts and emotions. Understanding the Universals Laws help us to do this.
1. The Law of Divine Oneness:
The Law of Divine Oneness helps us to understand that we live in a world where everything is connected to everything else. Everything we do, say, think and believe affects others and the universe around us via resonance.
2. The Law of Vibration:
This Universal Law states that everything in the Universe moves, vibrates, and travels in (chaotically) circular patterns. The same principles of vibration in the physical world apply to our thoughts, feelings, desires, and wills in the etheric world. Each sound, thing, and even thought has its own vibrational frequency, unique unto itself like a fingerprint.
3. The Law of Action:
The Law of Action must be applied in order for us to manifest things on earth. Therefore, we must engage in actions that support our thoughts, dreams, emotions and words.
4. The Law of Correspondence:
This Universal Law states that the principles or laws of physics that explain the physical world - energy, Light, vibration, and motion - have their corresponding principles in the etheric or universe. "As above, so below."
5. The Law of Cause and Effect:
This Universal Law states that nothing happens by chance or outside the Universal Laws. Every action has a reaction or consequence and we "reap what we have sown."
6. The Law of Compensation:
This Universal Law is the Law of Cause and Effect applied to blessings and abundance that are provided for us. The visible effects of our deeds are given to us in gifts, money, inheritances, friendships, and blessings. Or enables us to ultimately come to fruit in resonance with and accordance with our own truth.
7. The Law of Attraction:
This Universal Law demonstrates how we create the things, events, and people that come into our lives. Our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions produce energies which, in turn, attract like energies. Negative energies attract negative energies and positive energies attract positive energies.
8. The Law of Perpetual Transmutation of Energy:
This Universal Law states that all undamaged or non-handicapped persons have within them the power to change the conditions in their lives. Higher vibrations consume and transform lower ones; thus, each of us can change the energies in our lives by understanding the Universal Laws and applying the principles in such a way as to effect change.
9. The Law of Relativity:
This Universal Law states that each person will receive a series of problems (Tests of Initiation or confrontation with natural and universal chaos) for the purpose of strengthening the Light within. We must consider each of these tests to be a challenge and remain connected to our hearts when proceeding to solve the problems. This law also teaches us to compare our problems to others' problems and put everything into its proper perspective. No matter how bad we perceive our situation to be, there is always someone who is in a worse position. It is all relative.
10. The Law of Polarity:
This Universal Law states that everything is on a continuum and has an opposite. We can suppress and transform undesirable thoughts by concentrating on the opposite pole and working with strength of the impedance to our needs in our natural context. It is the law of mental vibrations.
11. The Law of Rhythm:
This Universal Law states that everything vibrates and moves to certain rhythms. These rhythms establish and emerge; seasons, cycles, stages of development, and patterns. Each cycle reflects the regularity of God's universe. Masters know how to rise above negative parts of a cycle by never getting too excited or allowing
negative things to penetrate their consciousness.
12. The Law of Gender:
This Universal Law states that everything has its masculine (yang) and feminine (yin) principles, and that these are the basis for all creation. The spiritual Initiate must balance the masculine and feminine energies within herself or himself to become a Master if they want to be asexual or find appropriate society to be engendered and ensouled as a true co-creator with God.
13. THE LAW OF EMERGENCE:
AT EVERY SCALE OF MOTION AND MOVEMENT THERE IS UNIVERSAL CHAOS AND THE BREAKDOWN CAUSED BY ENTROPY, BUT FROM THIS CHAOS ORDER FREELY EMERGES, STRUCTURES, AND RESTRUCTURES ITSELF TO EMERGE AND FORM SPONTANEOUS GIFTS OF NEW THINGS.
14. THE LAW OF DEDUCTIONS
FROM OUR PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL INTENTIONS, ASSETS AND FOCUS THERE ARE ALWAYS INTERFERING PROCESSES IN CHAOS AND DUALITY THAT SUBTRACT FROM OR DIVERT OR CONTEND TO GREATER OR LESSER DEGREES. THIS CAN OCCUR ACROSS A SPECTRUM RELATIVE TO US THAT IS EITHER EXTREMELY POSITIVE AND EDITORIAL OR, USURPING AND PREDATORY IN THE MOST EXTREMELY NEGATIVE WAY.
15. THE LAW OF ENSOULMENT
THE DEEDS WE DO IN LIFE ALTHOUGH ECHOING IN THIS DENSE ETERNITY VIA PHYSICAL AND ENERGETIC PROCESSES THAT COME FROM OURSELVES DO NOT ORIGINATE WITHIN THE MATERIALS, CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS OF THIS DIMENSION, WHICH IS BUT A BUSHEL FOR OUR SOUL LIGHT. OUR SOUL, RATHER, RESONATES WITH THE GREATER AND HIGHER FREQUENCY SOURCE OF OUR BEING AND IS LODGED IN A GREATER AND MORE PERMANENT UNIVERSE THAN THIS ONE. OUR SOUL IS THEREFORE NOT NECESSARILY A PART OF THIS UNIVERSAL DENSITY.
IN CONCLUSION, THE HUMAN SOUL ALTHOUGH HAVING BEEN THROUGH THE SAME ROUTES AS THE ANIMAL - HAS PASSED INTO A HIGHER DEGREE OF SPECIALISATION; SOCIALLY, TECHNOLOGICALLY AND HAS CREATED WITHIN ITS OWN SOCIETY ROLES OF GENDER AND FAMILY AND SOCIAL FACILITY.
ANIMALS EMERGE GROUP INTELLIGENCE AND ATTITUDE TOWARDS INDIVIDUALITY
AND GENDER, RECREATION AND PLAY, ARTEFACTS, ETC BUT EVERY ONE OF THEM THOUGH WOULD ANIMATEDLY OR INANIMATELY, CONSCIOUSLY OR UNCONSCIOUSLY RECOGNISE A BASIC NATURAL LAW.

I Would Call This Eclectic Pa

I would call this eclectic paganism myself. By that you can mix up religions that do not normally permit practicing of other religions if you wish to be in them, add and change elements as you wish, all without having to fit it into any particular label. In most religions just because the practices can be very similar, its particular and specific beliefs that tend to separate them out. Many of them would also have you believe if you have certain beliefs or mix certain practices then you cant truly be following either.
This doesn't take away from the validity of what anyone practices by any means. It only questions what one might call their personal form of practice. In the end it is what you feel comfortable practicing and I guess it really is up to each individual what they choose to call themselves, especially if they are in a particular church or coven or what have you.

Merry Meet and Good Morning :))) Blessings to you and yours for a magickal day today. Today is Saturday, July 20, 2013.
Saturdays are ruled by Saturn. Saturn's seemingly infinite journey around the Sun connects us to a greater world beyond. Today is a day of wisdom and awareness. It's a wonderful day to work on spiritual awareness and connection with the divine. Take some time to meditate today and connect with the universal energy. If you are working with spells today, it's the day to work with spells for overcoming obstacles, neutralizing harmful energy, binding, and banishing. When working with stones today choose to wear turquoise, labradorite, or diamond for protection. Use amethyst in amulets, and lead in talismans.
Tonight's Moon is Waxing Second Quarter in Sagittarius. The Waxing Moon is when the moon is getting larger in the sky, and moving towards the full moon. Itis the ideal time for magick that draws things towards you bringing about positive changes. The Waxing Moon represents the Goddess in her Maiden aspect. The Maiden is all about new beginnings, youthful ideas and enthusiasm. We begin our day with the Moon in Sagittarius. The Moon in Sagittarius encourages flights of imagination and confidence. This is an adventurous, philosophical, and athletic Moon sign. It favors expansion and growth. At 11:01 this morning the Moon begins her journey to Capricorn arriving at 2:40 this afternoon. The Moon is void of course or between signs during this time. During this time we want to minimize our actions involving anything important. This is a good time to read, relax and exercise. The Moon in Capricorn develops strong structure. It's a good time to set boundaries and rules. The magickal color of the day is Gray, and the incense of the day is Sandalwood. Have an amazingly magickal day!
Love and Blessings,
Jasmeine Moonsong

Possession Is How Many Points Of The Law

"This post from Colm MacCrossan, one of our editors at the University of Oxford, illustrates how the EEBO-TCP corpus can shed new light on old proverbs-and the challenge of sifting through and making sense of the results. The links throughout this post point to EEBO, the version of EEBO-TCP hosted by the University of Michigan Library, and the Oxford English Dictionary Online, and may require authentication/authorization."
One of the greatest pleasures of reviewing new texts for EEBO-TCP is the way in which it constantly confronts each of us with new perspectives on things we may feel we know so well as to be unquestionable. This can be profound (as in Becky's recent blog post showing that 'progressive' attitudes to schooling shouldn't be assumed to be uniquely modern), but can also begin as simply as stumbling across something oddly unfamiliar in an old use of an expression we still commonly repeat today.
Reviewing John Downame's "Foure Treatises Tending to Disswade all Christians from... the Abuses of Swearing, Drunkennesse, Whoredome, and Briberie" (1609), my eye was caught by the following allusion: '...[A]S THE COMMON PROVERBE IS, THERE ARE BUT TWELVE POINTS IN THE LAW, AND POSSESSION IS AS GOOD AS ELEAVEN OF THEM.' Having grown up with the notion that 'Possession is "nine" points of the law' (that is, nine tenths), I was surprised, and began to wonder whether Downame had garbled his proverb, or whether it had simply shifted in time.
Certainly "Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase the OED editors' note that "this" number is being used 'hyperbolically' is here harder to second guess.)
What begins to emerge from these sources, then, is a sense that 'nine points' has clearly come to dominate modern usage, but that 'twelve points' seems to have had some kind of currency in an earlier age. But how to pin down this hunch into a more concrete understanding of how this proverb was used in the early modern period?
Using the 'Proximity Search' feature available via the TCP's full-text search interface, it is possible to design a simple search that quickly generates several dozen examples of this proverb's usage from across the whole span of the seventeenth century - without filtering out either the 'nine' or 'eleven points' versions. This is a sufficiently large sample with which to begin to determine with more confidence the dominant form in the period to 1700.
Using the default search operator 'near', and changing the default proximity range from '40' to '120' characters, a user can search the whole corpus of over 40,000 texts in seconds, identifying all of the occasions in which all three of the words 'points', 'law', and 'possession' occurred close to one another.
This search on September 13, 2012 resulted in 52 matches in 48 records. (Phase I-only partners conducting the same search would only have discovered 38 matches in 34 records.) In other words, the three words appeared close to one another in 48 of the
In fact, both of these turn out to be false positives - although all three search terms occur within 120 characters of one another in the texts, they do not form the proverb in question. The earliest (though numerically-unspecific) allusion to the proverb itself therefore turns out to be an account in John Taylor's "All the Workes of John Taylor the Water-Poet" (1630) (p.137) of a man named John Rowse who is driven to despair and eventual murder as a result of losing his land to a supposed friend. The friend's declaration 'AND SEEING THAT I HAVE ALL THESE ESPECIAL POINTS OF THE LAW AND A SURE POSSESSION, TAKE WHAT COURSE YOU WILL' is taken by Rowse as irrefutable, triggering his terrible spiral.
The latest allusion to this phrase uncovered by this search meanwhile is a translation of "The Fables of Young Aesop", printed by Benjamin Harris in 1700. This concludes the fable of 'The Crocodile and the Dogs' with the moral: 'IN FINE, CONSIDER, WHEN THY TABLE IS SPREAD, IF THOU GOEST TO IT WITH AN UNSAVOURY HEART, THOU DOST NOT KNOW BUT THE DEVIL MAY BE IN THE FIRST MORSEL AND CHOAK THEE: AND THEN THOU'LT REMEMBER THIS COMMON SENTENCE, POSSESSION IS ELEVEN POINTS OF THE LAW!' (p.77)
Returning to the question that initially provoked this search: whether the understood proportion of 'possession' was 'nine points' or 'eleven': of the 39 hits which are not false positives - and which therefore do positively reference this proverb - 36 identify 'eleven points' as the magic number, with only three agreeing with the modern convention of 'nine'. It is possible to interrogate these results further in order to try to assess whether (for example) the beginning of the shift to modern usage might be detectable here, but even at this point the evidence of this corpus can be taken to strongly suggest that possession was far more likely to be assumed to be eleven points of the law before 1700, than nine.
The practical application of this specific example may be limited, but it demonstrates one way in which the EEBO-TCP corpus allows researchers to re-examine the understood contexts and significance of key words and phrases in a way which is both rapid and wide-ranging. The occurrences of this proverb uncovered by the search discussed above come from a broad range of genres including politics, philosophy, theology, astrology, poetry, and travel. Most of them are brief, passing references toward which a simple catalogue search could not possibly have pointed, but collectively they form a cohesive and potentially convincing body of usage, which in turn can form the basis of broader questions, such as what epistemological reasons might lie beneath this apparent shift from a duodecimal to a decimal scale of legal weight.

Spirituality Visions Of Siddhas Perfected Beings
Posted by

/ 2:43 PM /
The VISION OF SIDDHAS (PERFECTED BEINGS) is one of the many siddhis (spiritual powers) described in the Vibhuti Pada (Book III) of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The Sanskrit word Siddha means accomplished or adept and one who has attained the highest state of being. The Siddhas are the ones who have achieved many powers. They are capable of initiating others. And while they have achieved the highest state of consciousness, they are still aware of the suffering of lower beings that dwell in the lower realms. I guess this refers to people who like to eat at McDonald's. I may be wrong though. It could be Wendy's.
Buddhas, bodhisattvas, saints, devas, dakinis, archangels, and so on. Whatever they are and whatever you want to call them, they all exist within us. And, in my opinion, the ultimate goal of man is to find them and become one of them. Ugh, Nietzsche has entered the building. Hallo Ubermensch!
VUBHUTI PADA: SUTRA 33
"Murdha-jyotisi siddha-darsanam"
TRANSLATIONS:
1. (By performing Samyama on) the light under the crown of the head vision of perfected Beings. - I.K. Taimni, The Science Of Yoga
2. Focusing with perfect discipline on the light in the crown of the head, one acquires the perspective of the perfected ones. - Chip Hartranft, The Yoga-S^utra of Pata~njali: Sanskrit-English Translation ">ATTAINMENT OF VISIONS OF SIDDHAS (PERFECTED BEINGS)
Vision of Siddhas or the perfected beings can be attained by performing Samyama Meditation on the Third Eye Chakra or the Crown Chakra. Notice that I.K. Taimni's translation refers to the light "under" the crown of the head, so he may be simply referring to the Ajna (Third Eye) chakra. However, since both the Third Eye and the Crown chakras give direct access to invisible worlds, symbolize the threshold between the psychic and spiritual realms, and are exceptionally close to each other, I conclude that focusing on either of the two will enable you to develop this siddhi even if the translators don't point to the same thing.
Note: To better understand how Indian yogis and other masters of ancient wisdom attain vision of the Siddhas (perfected beings) and to see the full list of spiritual powers described in the Yoga Sutras, please refer to my main article about Spiritual Power.

Message just in from Prof Crow:
"You and me, Doc, have been chattin' about how some hokum practitioners go an' tell clients that the spirits is angry with them and that whatever they do with other spellcasters won't work.
You and I, Doc, know that this is bullshit and it's just that ole gypsy scam to give 'em a load of greenbacks to lift a curse or make dem spirits happy.
Now when things go wrong in folk's life it ain't coz the spirits are pissed with them. Usually the spirits don't meddle in folks' affairs; they just don't give a damn or don't notice they are there. What folk need when things go wrong in life, or need to get things done, is spirits to help 'em. To weigh in for 'em. Ya see the spirits ain't angry with them, Doc they just ain't helping 'em.
A lot of that ole time African Ju Ju was about gettin' your ancestors and gettin' the spirits friendly and prepared to help you. That's what we do, Doc, with our tricks and mojos. We talkin' to the spirits an' convincin em to help our clients.
Oh sure there could be all sorts of other bad shit surroundin' the client but nothing which a decent spiritual bath won't wash away; whatever it is, it ain't because the spirits are pissed."

Difficile stabilire quando tutto ebbe inizio, per`o...Dai Quelli ai Raminghi, passando per i Teoremi: tre Album, tre gruppi, la storia...
A voi...

Aleister Crowleys The Rite
Posted by

/ 12:03 AM /
ELEUSYVE PRODUCTIONS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE FOURTH IN ITS SERIES OF ROCK OPERA SOUNDTRACKS, BASED UPON THE SEVEN RITES OF ELEUSIS WRITTEN BY ALEISTER CROWLEY, THE MOST IMPORTANT FIGURE IN THE WESTERN OCCULT REVIVAL OVER THE LAST 100 YEARS. ELEUSYVE PRODUCTIONS IS A THEATER GROUP OF ACTORS, DANCERS AND MUSICIANS BASED IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, WHOSE PRIMARY CURRENT PURPOSE IS THE PRESENTATION OF THE SEVEN PLAYS COMPRISING ALEISTER CROWLEY'S RITES OF ELEUSIS (ORIGINALLY PRESENTED AS A SERIES IN LONDON IN 1910) AS MODERN MUSICAL THEATER PIECES, USING MUSIC, LIGHT, DANCE AND DRAMA TO ENHANCE THE POETRY AND SYMMETRY OF THE ORIGINAL WORKS.
Aleister Crowley drew upon his deep knowledge of classical Greek arts and culture to produce these seven works (each centered upon one of the seven planets of antiquity) and intended them as a vehicle to entertain, instruct and to generate interest in the AA, his magickal teaching order. More than a century later, interest in Crowley's occult knowledge and methods continues to grow, and the renewal of the Rites of Eleusis; their reworking in a modern rock opera format, staging and release on DVD and soundtrack CDs; has successfully brought these entertaining occult works into the 21st century.
Story synopsis: The Rite of Sol: a scene of post-conflict bliss is emerging following The Rite of Mars; a proud but precarious Utopia. Like a shadow cast by the brilliance of the Sun, however, something unseen moves beneath the glittering facade, haunting the devotees of the silent, ever-shining God.
Once again, the Rite of Sol features an outstanding cast of Seattle performers and musicians, with music composed by Jon Sewell and Melissa Holm. More information about all the completed Rites of Eleusis, with audio and video samples and ordering information for available products can be found at the Eleusyve Productions website. We are very excited to present The Rite of Sol, a culmination of several years work, and the latest in an outstanding series.
"A well-crafted and evocative work. These talented musicians and singers take us on a musical journey well-suited to the underlying story created by Aleister Crowley. With elements of progressive rock, world music, and much more, The Rite of Sol inspires and intrigues the listener at every turn. Recommended!" -David Shoemaker, Chancellor of the College of Thelema of Northern California

Witch Spells How To Get Your Spell To Work For You
Posted by
Unknown
/ 4:17 PM /
First up, with witch spells, you do not have to be a practicing witch to successfully cast witch spells.
In fact I say to my students they can call themselves whatever they desire, witch, magickal practitioner, conscious creator. It is really about what label you are most comfortable with.
The other important thing I want to tell you is that anyone can be, or practice witchcraft. I sometimes receive questions from people asking if they can do it, because they do not come from a line of witches. And I also have people telling me that they are more gifted because they do.
I want to debunk that myth! ANYONE can practice magick. ANYONE can rightly call themselves a witch. NO-ONE is more gifted than another person. It is instead whether you have turned on the 'switch' of your gifts. We are all gifted. It is just that some are more intouch with their gifts than others.
In fact the most important thing you need to know when casting witch spells, in order to have your spells work for you, is that YOU are the key ingredient to their success.
This is both the best news and the most challenging news. As a spells success is not about whether magick is real or works or not. It is actually based on YOU, and whether you are energetically aligned with what you are spell casting for.
As often, without our conscious awareness, we are focused on the problem, not the solution. So we are focused on what we don't want, or our longing, our fear of not having, our doubts etc - which are all negative energies.
And the key to witch spells being successful for you is to have absolute certainty that what you want to have happen will. So there is no doubt, no worry, no hope or longing. Instead you just know. You cast the spell with certainty and love

Spring Vernal Equinox Folklore Correspondences And Magick
Posted by
Unknown
/ 1:23 PM /
Rather than as purely Pagan holliday, I chose to observe and commemorate the Vernal ( Spring ) Equinox, as a universal holiday, not really bound to any religion, a priori. In fact, as I have mentioned when I wrote about Saturnalia and Sol Invictus, most, If not all of the holidays which are associated ( and seen on ) with the Wheel of the Year, actually predate any known Pagan religion. Some anthropologists describe it as sort of prehistoric cult of worshiping the nature, or plainly superstitious attempts to mark specific periodic changes in nature and affect them. Hence un For me, as an Eastern Orthodox Christian, both Annunciations, and the Easter do not occur before April ( Church uses Julian calendar for holidays and rites, and Gregorian is used as mundane, plain-time calendar ), hence I do not necessarily associate the two.
The fact that the plethora of Earth cultures and religions, old and new, commemorate this day in some form, is a reason more for me, to take its power and significance seriously.
SO WHAT IS VERNAL EQUINX CELEBRATION Spring equinox celebration, in any of it's multitude of forms ("Alban Elfed", the Teutonic festival in honour of Eostre, Roman "Hilaria Matris De^um", Welsh Gwyl Canol Gwenwynol, "Disablot" of the Norse, Iranian "Nowruz" or "New Year", "Sham El Nessim",the Ancient Egyptian holiday, Wiccan "Ostara" etc. ) commemorates the astrological phenomenon, which occurs in March ( any day between the 19th -25th of March ) on the Northern Hemisphere.
Thus "is the equinox on the Earth when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator, heading northward" , and consequently, the duration of the day and night are equated. Hence the associations of the holiday with harmony and balance as well.
In essence, in Europe it's a festival associated with the return of the Light, and the deities associated with it are often associated with Light, renewal, rebirth, growth, flourishing, all the things we associated with spring.
Hence, the old German pagan goddess Oastra, and her Teutonic version ( Anglo- Saxon ) Eostre, are perceived the similar way, as Jackob Grimm, describes in his "Deustche mytholigie" :
Ostara, E'astre seems therefore to have been the divinity of the radiant dawn, of upspringing light, a spectacle that brings joy and blessing, whose meaning could be easily adapted by the resurrection-day of the christian's God. Bonfires were lighted at Easter and according to popular belief of long standing, the moment the sun rises on Easter Sunday morning, he gives three joyful leaps, he dances for joy... Water drawn on the Easter morning is, like that at Christmas, holy and healing... here also heathen notions seems to have grafted themselves on great christian festivals. Maidens clothed in white, who at Easter, at the season of returning spring, show themselves in clefts of the rock and on mountains, are suggestive of the ancient goddess
Her sacred animal, alleged to had been her helper in spreading the influence of the Spring was rabbit, and the colored eggs were left at her sanctuaries and temples, on Vernal equinox, which seem to have influenced the Westerner's trademark symbols of Easter.
It's often speculated, how the Christian custom of decoration of the boiled eggs originates from these celberations, and indeed what many Christians do, in modern times may indeed be modeling after these pagan customs, but the actual ritual of dyin g the egg red, on Easter, or rather Saturday before it is a Christian proprietary ritual. It has to do with a miracle associated with Mary Magdalene, which had happened to her upon the resurrection of the Lord Christ.

RITUALS AND SPELLS
THE 12 CANDLES RITUAL
I designed this ritual, to be performed on the Spring Equinox day, in order to bless some aspect of Your life, to entice success in some specific area(s) of life, and to make ( reasonable ) wishes come true.
Set twelve candles, so that they form a circle. Any color can be used, though green or yellow would be in accordance to Equinox tradition. In the centre of the candle circle, place a fireproof dish ( like a censer, or a fireproof dish with coals ). Light the candles, sunwise.
Next, crush and powder. Five fingers grass
. Saffron
. Sage leaves
On a piece of paper write down Your needs and wishes. Sprinkle it with just a small pinch of powder. Fold it thrice, towards oneself. Throw some crushed and powdered herb mixture into the censer with coals and the set the paper alight while chanting:
"Darkness end and sorrow burn, "Raise with light, good luck return !"
" Set in motion, break the stillness, "
"Open the roads and bring success" !"
Toss also the burning paper into censer, and add some more of the powder. You may want to chant few more times, more so If You feel so inclined. Bury the ashes remaining in Your own yard, or on sprinkle some place where the idea of abundance and growth is dominant, such as forest, or strong river that flows toward East etc.
Alternatively, You could add ashes to the soil in some pot, and plant some herb there.
BLESSED SEED RITUAL
Seeds can be empowered and planted to work Your magick in manifesting Your need for money income, health growth, abundance, fertility, success and alike, and this can be done throughout many auspicious times of year. Like Nights of the Full Moon, Winter Solstice, even Imboloc. But by far most auspicious and prominent day for it is Spring Equinox, more so If the Moon happens to be Crescent ( in waxing phase )
All You need to do is empower some seeds, for example by means of chant, prayer, or even passing few times through incense smoke, then plant them, water with consecrated water ( it can be Lunar slime, water in which Holy water from the Church has been added, "living water", or crystal essences ), and as the plant grow so will Your health, wealth, success etc.
BURNING THE CORN DOLL
The doll made of Corn or Wheat collected during Lamas or Even Samhain, ashes are reserved and sprinkled in fields, gardens and plant pots to ensure fertility, good yields and abundance. This is a traditional European folk custom.
LINEN CHARM FOR SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
If Your desire is to increase Your spiritual powers, aptness and proficiency in spiritual work, You can create this charm to assure You achieve this goal. On the 22ndof March, get some new, linen fabric, preferably purple If You can get it. Go where the Willow tree grows, and cut the bark, or perforate minutely, and collect the dripping sap on Your linen fabric. Carry it on Your behalf onward from that point as often as able, and place it bellow pillow when sleeping. Hope You found the post informative and inspirational,
Many Blessings, from Shadow J NOTES: This article was written and composed by myself, should You wish to use any part of it elsewhere online, You may, but You have to provide credits ; Shadow of Shadows magick place, Shadow-333@hotmail.com or a direct link to this postCREDITS AND REFRENCES: According to :

Teddy Roosevelt Bitterroot Bigfoot
Posted by
Unknown
/ 3:14 AM /
Teddy Roosevelt wrote a book called "The Wilderness Hunter", published in 1892. One incident he recorded was from a story told by an old trapper he knew by the name of Bauman. It was set in the Bitterroot Mountains that border Idaho and Montana.
"Frontiersmen are not, as a rule, apt to be very superstitious. They lead lives too hard and practical, and have too little imagination in things spiritual and supernatural. I have heard but few ghost stories while living on the frontier, and those few were of a perfectly commonplace and conventional type. But I once listened to a goblin-story, which rather impressed me.
A grizzled, weather beaten old mountain hunter, named Bauman who, born and had passed all of his life on the Frontier, told it the story to me. He must have believed what he said, for he could hardly repress a shudder at certain points of the tale; but he was of German ancestry, and in childhood had doubtless been saturated with all kinds of ghost and goblin lore. So that many fearsome superstitions were latent in his mind; besides, he knew well the stories told by the Indian medicine men in their winter camps, of the snow-walkers, and the specters, [spirits, ghosts but whether this was so or not, no man can say.
When the event occurred, Bauman was still a young man, and was trapping with a partner among the mountains dividing the forks of the Salmon from the head of Wisdom River. Not having had much luck, he and his partner determined to go up into a particularly wild and lonely pass through which ran a small stream said to contain many beavers. The pass had an evil reputation because the year before a solitary hunter who had wandered into it was slain, seemingly by a wild beast, the half eaten remains being afterwards found by some mining prospectors who had passed his camp only the night before.
The memory of this event, however, weighted very lightly with the two trappers, who were as adventurous and hardy as others of their kind. They took their two lean mountain ponies to the foot of the pass where they left them in an open beaver meadow, the rocky timber-clad ground being from there onward impracticable for horses. They then struck out on foot through the vast, gloomy forest, and in about four hours reached a little open glade where they concluded to camp, as signs of game were plenty.
There was still an hour or two of daylight left, and after building a brush lean-to and throwing down and opening their packs, they started upstream. The country was very dense and hard to travel through, as there was much down timber, although here and there the somber woodland was broken by small glades of mountain grass. At dusk they again reached camp. The glade in which it was pitched was not many yards wide, the tall, close-set pines and firs rising round it like a wall. On one side was a little stream, beyond which rose the steep mountains slope, covered with the unbroken growth of evergreen forest.
They were surprised to find that during their absence something, apparently a bear, had visited camp, and had rummaged about among their things, scattering the contents of their packs, and in sheer wantonness destroying their lean-to. The footprints of the beast were quite plain, but at first they paid no particular heed to them, busying themselves with rebuilding the lean-to, laying out their beds and stores and lighting the fire.
While Bauman was making ready supper, it being already dark, his companion began to examine the tracks more closely, and soon took a brand from the fire to follow them up, where the intruder had walked along a game trail after leaving the camp. When the brand flickered out, he returned and took another, repeating his inspection of the footprints very closely. Coming back to the fire, he stood by it a minute or two, peering out into the darkness, and suddenly remarked, "Bauman, that bear has been walking on two legs."
Bauman laughed at this, but his partner insisted that he was right, and upon again examining the tracks with a torch, they certainly did seem to be made by but two paws or feet. However, it was too dark to make sure. After discussing whether the footprints could possibly be those of a human being, and coming to the conclusion that they could not be, the two men rolled up in their blankets, and went to sleep under the lean-to. At midnight Bauman was awakened by some noise, and sat up in his blankets. As he did so his nostrils were struck by a strong, wild-beast odor, and he caught the loom of a great body in the darkness at the mouth of the lean-to. Grasping his rifle, he fired at the vague, threatening shadow, but must have missed, for immediately afterwards he heard the smashing of the under wood as the thing, whatever it was, rushed off into the impenetrable blackness of the forest and the night.
After this the two men slept but little, sitting up by the rekindled fire, but they heard nothing more. In the morning they started out to look at the few traps they had set the previous evening and put out new ones. By an unspoken agreement they kept together all day, and returned to camp towards evening. On nearing it they saw, hardly to their astonishment that the lean-to had again been torn down. The visitor of the preceding day had returned, and in wanton malice had tossed about their camp kit and bedding, and destroyed the shanty. The ground was marked up by its tracks, and on leaving the camp it had gone along the soft earth by the brook. The footprints were as plain as if on snow, and, after a careful scrutiny of the trail, it certainly did seem as if, whatever the thing was, it had walked off on but two legs.
The men, thoroughly uneasy, gathered a great heap of dead logs and kept up a roaring fire throughout the night, one or the other sitting on guard most of the time. About midnight the thing came down through the forest opposite, across the brook, and stayed there on the hillside for nearly an hour. They could hear the branches crackle as it moved about, and several times it uttered a harsh, grating, long-drawn moan, a peculiarly sinister sound. Yet it did not venture near the fire. In the morning the two trappers, after discussing the strange events of the last 36 hours, decided that they would shoulder their packs and leave the valley that afternoon. They were the more ready to do this because in spite of seeing a good deal of game sign they had caught very little fur. However it was necessary first to go along the line of their traps and gather them, and this they started out to do. All the morning they kept together, picking up trap after trap, each one empty. On first leaving camp they had the disagreeable sensation of being followed. In the dense spruce thickets they occasionally heard a branch snap after they had passed; and now and then there were slight rustling noises among the small pines to one side of them.
At noon they were back within a couple of miles of camp. In the high, bright sunlight their fears seemed absurd to the two armed men, accustomed as they were, through long years of lonely wandering in the wilderness, to face every kind of danger from man, brute or element. There were still three beaver traps to collect from a little pond in a wide ravine near by. Bauman volunteered to gather these and bring them in, while his companion went ahead to camp and made ready the packs.
On reaching the pond Bauman found three beavers in the traps, one of which had been pulled loose and carried into a beaver house. He took several hours in securing and preparing the beaver, and when he started homewards he marked, with some uneasiness, how low the sun was getting. As he hurried toward camp, under the tall trees, the silence and desolation of the forest weighted on him. His feet made no sound on the pine needles and the slanting sunrays, striking through among the straight trunks, made a gray twilight in which objects at a distance glimmered indistinctly. There was nothing to break the gloomy stillness which, when there is no breeze, always broods over these somber primeval forests. At last he came to the edge of the little glade where the camp lay and shouted as he approached it, but got no answer. The campfire had gone out, though the thin blue smoke was still curling upwards.
Near it lay the packs wrapped and arranged. At first Bauman could see nobody; nor did he receive an answer to his call. Stepping forward he again shouted, and as he did so his eye fell on the body of his friend, stretched beside the trunk of a great fallen spruce. Rushing towards it the horrified trapper found that the body was still warm, but that the neck was broken, while there were four great fang marks in the throat. The footprints of the unknown beast-creature, printed deep in the soft soil, told the whole story. The unfortunate man, having finished his packing, had sat down on the spruce log with his face to the fire, and his back to the dense woods, to wait for his companion. While thus waiting, his monstrous assailant, which must have been lurking in the woods, waiting for a chance to catch one of the adventurers unprepared, came silently up from behind, walking with long noiseless steps and seemingly still on two legs. Evidently unheard, it reached the man, and broke his neck by wrenching his head back with its fore paws, while it buried its teeth in his throat. It had not eaten the body, but apparently had romped and gamboled around it in uncouth, ferocious glee, occasionally rolling over and over it; and had then fled back into the soundless depths of the woods.
Bauman, utterly unnerved and believing that the creature with which he had to deal was something either half human or half devil, some great goblin-beast, abandoned everything but his rifle and struck off at speed down the pass, not halting until he reached the beaver meadows where the hobbled ponies were still grazing. Mounting, he rode onwards through the night, until beyond reach of pursuit."
