I have a new set of oracular divination cards. I call them this because they're not really tarot cards in the usual sense. They describe themselves as an Oracle card set and I will go with this description. Especially given that I am going to DELPHI soon to see THE Oracle. Seems appropriate that I should "gem up" on this ovatic tradition.
The set was devised by that eminent Celtic mythology scholar and druidical wise one - John Matthews. Of course, he got Will Worthington to do the artwork for the cards. Any sensible person in this field would do. I have several other sets of tarot cards featuring his excellent artwork (e.g. The Wildwood Tarot, The Druidcraft Tarot) and I highly recommend them for anyone in the field of druidic divination.

As you know, though, my work has been taking on an Arthurian bent over the past few years. Since 2010, when I encountered Merlin as a tutor and guide along my spiritual path, I have found that I have been working through Arthurian archetypes each year. This year seems like no exception to that, but trying to find information about Galahad/Gwalchaved is very difficult. Hence, I felt I needed a meditation tool that would allow me to get into "the spirit" of this archetype. When I saw the Camelot Oracle, and that it was written by John Matthews, then I needed only a split second to decide to buy it.
I have only read the manual about them - I haven't tried using them yet. This being The Quiet Time I'm not wanting to stir things up just yet. I will get acquainted with the set first, for the next few weeks, and then when it comes to that all-important Imbolc or Spring Equinox moment when the year begins in earnest I will do my first draw with these cards and then report back on their efficacy for me.
As the set uses the Arthurian Archetypes I fully expect that I will be aligned to their output. I need first to confirm that my "champion" for this year is what I expect it to be. Once this is done I'm off - full flow - and let's see where it takes me this year.

Mystic Faerie 2007, Deck of the Bastard 2013
I really like the pentacles suit in the Mystic Faerie Tarot. In each suit of this deck, a story is told through the progression of the cards. This works and doesn't work-it's a fun idea, but some cards are bit off the mark as far as traditional interpretation goes. In the pentacles suit, a faerie gets lost from her family and decides to live in an area where she finds herself-there's plenty to eat there, and she can make baskets and a shelter. But she soon finds it lonely without company, and after having her little home ransacked by some rats, she is befriended by mice, who take her into their community. The Six of Pentacles shows the faerie and the mice sharing their bounty with one another, in the spirit of charity and generosity often associated with this card. It's a really cute card. I love those little mice!
Then in contrast, we have the King of Swords, standing against a black background in his cold armor, with sword in hand. What in the world could be happening with me today that I should draw two such contrasting cards?
I'm not sure what the day holds, but I have taken some decisive action recently, and it has involved scrutiny and generosity (or at least the distribution of goods - in this case, my time). I have decided to leave Aeclectic Tarot and make my account inactive. It has become as much a time suck as ever Facebook was, and with nearly as few benefits to me. It's simply time to move on, and I hope the extra time I gain will be put to better use through engaging more fully with the blogging community, making more time for meditation and other pursuits, and of course, more time for serving those who are kind enough to honour me by ordering a reading.
Still I can't wait to see how Six of Pentacles + King of Swords manifests itself today. A charitable act cut down? A misguided attempt at charity seen through? An act of kindness leads to a realization?

Those of us who love tarot know that its imagery is all around us - sometimes in the most surprising forms and places! I'm going to do a series of posts focusing on tarot imagery that I've found right here in Edmonton where I live. As usual, these posts will be intermittent although I'll try to post a new Edmonton tarot card every Friday.
The series will focus on the 22 cards of the Major Arcana. I'll briefly describe the meaning of each card and then tell you about the Edmonton photo I've chosen to illustrate it. All the photos have been taken by myself, My Rare One or by friends. I deliberately avoided using Edmonton photos that I could simply find on the internet because where's the fun and challenge in that? My only other rule for this series was that all the photos must be of public objects or public locations so that anyone can easily see them in Edmonton if they want to.
This post's photo is of a mural painted on the side of Sanctuary Curio Shoppe, a store just south of Whyte Avenue (one of Edmonton's favourite areas for shopping, bars and restaurants). Sanctuary is a wonderfully funky place specializing in pagan, goth and kink merchandise. The mural portrays the artist's interpretation of the Temperance, World and Star cards of the Major Arcana.

Throughout recorded history, human beings have used special techniques and rituals in an attempt to divine the future. Some prophetic arts, such as the practice of examining the entrails of sacrificed animals, have died out altogether; others, such as astrology, are still in everyday use. Another technique which has roots in the distant past, but is still in use today, is the Tarot.
There is a swirl of competing theories about the origins of what we know today as Tarot cards. Some say their use emerged from the magical traditions of ancient Egypt; some believe the Tarot's roots lie in the corpus of Jewish mystical knowledge, the Cabbala; others say some early Christian sects, known as the Gnostics, originated their use. What is known is that the Gnostics did indeed depict elements of their spiritual beliefs on cards.
The use of cards for divination purposes seems to have spread to Europe in the Middle Ages, perhaps transmitted by Gypsies. Some dismiss the Tarot cards as nothing but horoscope-style nonsense, but over the years a number of major historical figures have taken them seriously. Aleister Crowley, the notorious British occultist, and some say black magician, was fascinated by the Tarot, and had a special set hand painted by an artist of his own acquaintance. Even as distinguished a scientist as the psychologist Carl Jung, was intrigued by the Tarot tradition, and found the symboling of the cards to be genuinely profound. It's primarily the cards of Major Arcana which are used for divination purposes. They are believed to stand for traits of personality, or stages in our journey through life. Among the cards are The Magician, The Lover, The Hermit and The Fool. Interestingly, given the traditionally sinister associations of the number 13, Death is the 13th Arcanum. It is not actually considered unlucky, however, and does not necessarily relate to bodily death. Rather, it can often symbolise the ending of one of life's chapters and the beginning of a new one. This can be a positive thing.
Using Tarot cards to forecast the future is a little more complex than reading your horoscope in the daily paper. It requires training and study and an element of natural clairvoyance. A Tarot reader is said to use the cards only as a spur to insight and divination. The cards themselves are not definitive. It is the perceptions they give rise to in the sensitive which matter.
There is, in fact, no standard way of using Tarot cards to forecast the future. Different readers, those modern-day oracles, each have their own preferences. Some have the person whose future is being foretold first select a card from the pack; other say the card should be picked by a third party. Other cards are then placed around the first card in a specific order and pattern called a spread. Several different spread types exist, based on patterns such as a circle or a Celtic cross. Which one is used may depend on the preferences of the Tarot reader or the type of information being sought.
Even in the scientific age, we continue to be fascinated by mysteries and the possibility of divination. Horoscopes still appear in the papers every day, and no doubt the Tarot will still be used for many years to come. Why not treat yourself to a reading sometime? Even if you don't believe in it, it should at least prove to be an entertaining experience.

The Cosmic Tarot is a deck that I found this year, created by Norbert Losche. He is a self-taught artist that currently lives in Germany. The first Cosmic Tarot was published in 1986.
I have been using the Waite-Smith deck for a few years now, and I had come to depend on it's symbolism and meanings for me. So when i discovered the Cosmic Tarot, it took me quite a few readings before it started to 'speak' to me in it's own language of symbolism. The deck is 78 cards, with a LWB [little white book]. The book has basic meanings, but there is also a supplementary book that was published for this deck : The Cosmic Tarot: Signposts Along the Path, From Laura E. Clarson. I like this deck, and I may eventually get this book so that I can enjoy this deck even more!
The artist created the art for these cards using ink and pastels, so they have a soft and dreamy look. The images on the cards were inspired by some actors and actresses, like Greta Garbo, Clark Gable and Rita Hayworth. This deck is smaller in size than the Waite-Smith and it is easy to handle. These cards are very detailed and the figures, the faces and hands are all beautifully rendered, something that I appreciate from a realistic, artist style deck.
Why I love this deck
With my experience in tarot reading, I found that its only a matter of reading style when using this deck. Some elements from this deck were inspired by the Waite-Smith, and other parts of it are inspired by the imagery of the Thoth; but the artwork is generally in a modern setting, with modern figures and scenes, and I like this. It's a different style than the traditional WS deck, because the colors are more vibrant and there is much more detail to be enchanted with while reading. The symbolism of this deck took me a while to understand, but now that I've read with it for so long, I have been very happy with the results, and I use it often when I am ready to discover the message within the Cosmic Tarot Deck.

Doors, windows, and gates were unlocked to make sure their long-awaited guests knew they were welcome. CREATING YOUR OWN TAROT CARD DECK
Merry Meet :)))))) Have you ever considered making your own tarot cards for use? It's a great way to learn the cards and to bond with the deck that you will be using. It is also a great way to obtain a tarot deck if you are in an area that you cannot buy tarot decks. I know a few of you are in places where they are extremely hard to come by. The easiest way I know of is to use card stock and laminate your images. You can get card stock and laminating sheets at lots of stores. I know where I am located they are available at Staples, Wal-Mart, and the Craft Stores. They are pretty inexpensive as well.
Once you get the card stock you want to choose what size you want your deck to be. Pick a size that is comfortable for you hand. You may want to base the size on a deck that you already have that is comfortable to use. The next thing you need to decide is what type of deck you want to make. You can make one based on the Rider-Waite system, or you can create a deck based on your own personal system, more like an Oracle deck.
Now how to design your cards. :)) There are several ways that you can do this. I am familiar with photo shop so am actually making the card designs right in photoshop. I am doing a set right now based on the Rider-Waite tarot system. This is something that I've been working on very slowly over the last few months. If you wind up creating your own deck on the computer you could print your cards on card-stock.
Another method that I like is the collage method. Use magazines, pictures printed off the internet etc. and cut pictures to correspond to the cards you wish to make. You can choose one image for each card or a combination of images. Use glue to hold them in place until you laminate them. For those of you who love to paint or draw you may wish to hand paint or draw each card. Another method is taking photos to correspond to each card. Whatever you choose, get creative and have fun with it!
When the cards are the way you wish them to be, you can use laminating paper to laminate them. You may wish to have them done at a place as well. I know our Staples out here does it for really cheap. For most of you this will most likely not be a quick project. However, it is the best way I know to really get in and learn the tarot cards. It's an amazing experience that brings an incredible light to this method of divination. You will also have a greater personal connection with your deck making it easier to read as you are the one who designed it! :))))))
