Prayer is to Catholics as Magick is to Wiccans. It is through magickal rituals that Wiccans express their faith to their Gods, Goddesses and nature. It is also their way of seeking help from nature to bestow on them their personal wants and desires. Many Wiccans perform magick rituals for thanksgiving all of their sabbat celebrations. An integral part in almost all magick ritual is the candle. Spells in rituals are believed to be incomplete without lighting a candle. Candles are said to enhance the effectiveness of spells during rituals and spell castings.
Why are candles used by Wiccans in their ceremonial rituals? Throughout history, witches have always included beeswax candles for their spell castings. In the middles ages, witches use candles even during midday to celebrate the harvest season and similar occasions. Until now, Wiccans still find candles as a mystical tool which helps make their spells and chants more potent and powerful. Wiccans uses candles mainly because it is not hard to find, purchase or make.
A lot of specialty stores sell candles, and they come in different shapes, sizes, color, and composition. Majority of the candles used by Wiccans are mostly beeswax. It's not like there are other types of candles with different chemical composition, but what I'm saying is that Wiccans are more inclined to using products which comes from nature.
Wiccans use colored candles according to the occasion which they will be celebrating. White is used in majority of their rituals. It means purity and mainly used to celebrate celebrations for the Gods and Goddesses, or when Wiccans want to summon them in their presence. Candles are placed strategically in the points of the pentagram. It symbolizes that they are in tuned with the four sacred elements of Wicca- fire, air, water, earth. This also signifies that they will be drawing energy from these four elements for whatever purpose they need it, it still needs to be in accordance with the Wiccan Rede and their Three-Fold Law.
Some widely used candle colors during Wiccan celebration are pink, red, and green. Pink represents love and domestic peace and harmony. Red symbolizes strength, power, good health, and passion. Lastly, green represents prosperity, good luck, and money.
Depending on the intention of a Wiccan, they may use one of more colors during a single spell casting ceremony. The combination of colors in a given ceremony largely will depend on the intention of the spell and how urgent an outcome is needed in a person's life.
