Women have trouble getting equal respect in the sciences all over the world, but their situation may be worst in the Muslim world where patriarchal attitudes remain much stronger and more deeply ingrained than in most other places. This is ironic because in many Muslim nations, large numbers of women get advanced education in science and engineering. In principle, then, women should occupy significant positions in the sciences, but they don't. Why?
Some of it is misogyny, with too many men still believing that women are inferior or, if not, that they nevertheless belong at home raising children because that's the role God has ordained for them. This misogyny is largely faith-based, but we cannot ignore how religion might be relevant in other ways. After all, new science and technology production in the Muslim world is depressing low overall - far lower than most other regions. These two issues may be connected.
