Although we do not celebrate August 1 (or any other Sabbat) in a traditional way, mostly because for us there is no significant season change at the moment, we always give ourselves a little treat to celebrate the most special days of the Pagan community. Being online sellers, there is usually very little work on those special days, as our customers are gathering with covens, friends and family to celebrate - and being online sellers, the best treat we can give ourselves is a little "me" time.
One of the most powerful signs of August 1 in the northern hemisphere is, obviously, the Sun. For me, and for many others I'm sure, the Sun contains a strong symbolism of the physical and the material, as well as a powerful masculine energy, which also ties with the physical manifestation. So, our goal today - and tomorrow, I'm writing this on the evening of the 31 - is to give our physical bodies as much pampering as we can. First, through what we eat and drink, creating luscious and healing dishes and drinks; salads, smoothies, herbal teas, etc. Second, by giving our bodies love with beauty+healing treatments; a foot massage with olive oil, a hair mask with rosemary tea, etc. And third, by balancing resting and exercising and connecting with our roof garden, which provides with most of the herbs we have used today.
As the sun sets down, we will turn to fill our minds and spirits - it could be reading, spinning some yarn, working on any of my textile arts projects, and Fernando (my husband) probably will take out the carving tools and carve with abandon until a very late hour. The light of candles will illuminate the altar, and the smoke of resin incense will fill the house, blessing it and cleaning it as we have cleaned our bodies.
Our body is our main temple, our main altar, and the vessel of Spirit - taking care of it, and loving it, should be just as important as cleaning and loving your other altar, or connecting with Nature. I don't think that what we have done today (and what we will do tomorrow) is less important that performing rituals or attending ceremonies at all, because for me there is no non-sacred moment, and I believe that absolutely every action, even those deemed as routine, can be performed in a sacred way.
When I treat myself and my family, I am creating abundance, blessing and protection energies; when I love myself, I am making myself more able to love others, to care for others, and I am giving myself what I need to be a better Spiritual Guide for my customers. When I love myself, I am becoming a better, cleaner, sharper instrument for the Spirits that work with me, because a clean and rested body is clearly a better vehicle for their guidance and healing than an abandoned, exhausted one.
So, along this week, I invite you to create time to love yourself fully. If you're craving inspiration, treat yourself to a concert or an exhibition; if you're craving health, treat yourself to a vegetarian week, a new hiking adventure or simply 15 minutes of daily meditation in the park; if you're craving rest, treat yourself to a daily siesta, a Yoga workshop, or start a new hobby. If you are craving love, treat yourself by loving others, either by letting go and forgiving, or by performing some charity/volunteering.
This invitation is not about spoiling yourself rotten, which is what many people understand when the words "love yourself" come up - this is about shining like the Sun, the symbol of August 1. This is about what you truly, really need, and not about instant gratification. It is about being a source of light for others.

Inspired by my friend Ryan and his blog A Changing Altar, I've decided to join the Pagan Blog Project. I anticipate posting every two weeks, so only once per letter of the alphabet. This Friday, the letter is H.
I think when many people hear the word "hex" they immediately thing of "curse". However, when used to refer to a type of folk art traditionally painted on barns and homes, hex takes on an entirely different meaning.
"Hex signs" originate in Pennsylvania Dutch country and can be used magically or simply appreciated for their artistic beauty. Indeed, many historians and folklorists believe that the designs were originally nothing more than folk art brought over from Germany, but which later developed into a form of ethnic symbolism. These days, many hex signs are associated with specific intents and carry quite a bit of magical power with them. But some are still just art. It's all in the intent, after all.
The term "hex sign" was probably picked up because of its sexiness. In a book published in 1924 about the Pennsylvania Dutch, many terms were used by local farmers to refer to the signs, including "blumme" (flowers) or "schtanne" (stars). However one farmer called them "Hexefoos" and that's what stuck.
There are a few classic designs for hex signs, many of which incorporate geometric shapes with symbols. Magically, the meaning of the hex is based on the shapes, colours and symbols used in its design. For example a six-pointed rosette chases away bad luck, an eight-pointed star invites good fortune and an eight-pointed star or "sun ray" with a circle at the center is a symbol for success. If you add rain drops and/or wheat to this design, the hex may mean a good weather for successful harvest, however if you add acorns to the design it may mean success with conception or with a new project.
Here are some traditional meanings for hex signs:
* Rosettes: Luck (or chasing away bad luck)
* Stars: Luck or success (or protection)
* 4-pointed sun wheel: Warmth and fertility
* Acorn: Fertility or "humble beginnings"
* Dove: Peace or friendship
* Heart: Love
* Oak leaf: Strength and endurance
* Raindrop: Good weather or abundance
* Tulips: Faith, hope and trust (or chastity)
* Wheat: Abundance, prosperity (abundant crops)
If you are creating your own hexes then I believe that you can use symbolism that is meaningful for you and that has some sort of universal or cultural associations around it. The same goes for colour and geometry. Like other forms of magic that involve creating something (such as a talisman), you will be drawing energy to the spell and starting to form it as you work out the design of your hex. While creating the design, really focus on the intent or purpose of the hex, including the specific symbols and how the symbolism will empower the hex. Afterwards, raise energy to give it more juice if you want to, but sometimes the simple act of purposeful and focused creation is enough.
Hexes can be drawn, painted, embroidered, knitted, carved, planted as a design in a garden, decorated into a cake, or made in any way that results in a visual symbol. It's a fun and powerful form of spellcraft.

Reports say some are doing jail time of up to six years.
"I'm asking you to sign this petition to help us reach our goal of 10,000 signatures. I care deeply about this cause, and I hope you will support our efforts," a senior official of the association, Harold Williams is quoted saying.
The petition reads: "Belief in witchcraft is widely held in Malawi by people of all levels of education and stature in society. Whereas the law does not accept the reality of witchcraft, the Police and judicial authorities, many of whom share the belief, distort the law to punish those who are accused of witchcraft"
"It is mainly the elderly, men and women, who are accused of witchcraft and there are many very elderly and infirm imprisoned throughout Malawi - sentenced for up to 6 years without anything that would pass as substantive evidence in courts which do not accept superstition and suspicion as adequate."

The human-rights law program I direct recently partnered with an N.G.O. in Malawi to run a mobile legal-aid clinic focusing on witchcraft cases in two rural communities.
Men, women and children flocked to our clinic seeking legal assistance. The cases were challenging and engaged the question of how to confront accusations of witchcraft, particularly when children and elderly women disproportionately bear the brunt of such accusations.
The persecution of accused witches has not historically been confined to Africa. Witch-hunts have occurred in Europe, America, ancient Rome, Aztec Mexico, Russia, China and India. But the practice persists in poor settings in part because witchcraft can be used in communities without routine access to modern medicine and science to explain seemingly inexplicable instances of death and misfortune.

The first calculation to make for a numerological chart is the birth date. The date needs to be written out in the mm/dd/yyyy format. For example if you were born on January 23rd of 1980 it would be 01/23/1980. If you add the numbers of the birth date together you will have the Life Path number. In the example given, it would be 1 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 or 24- which then reduces to 2 + 4 or 6. The negative aspects of a Life Path number of 9 include a tendency to be demanding. Those who lose their path and can't recognize that generosity is their way to turn may become selfish and greedy of their belongings and money.
