Creating A Samhain Ancestor Altarsamhain October

Creating A Samhain Ancestor Altarsamhain October 31St Is A
CREATING A SAMHAIN ANCESTOR ALTAR

Samhain, October 31st, is a time when the veil separating the physical realm from the spirit realm is thin, allowing us to communicate, feel, or sense our loved ones who have crossed into the Summerland. It is a time to honor all those who have walked this sacred Earth before us and thank them for their knowledge we carry forth in our hearts and in our veins.

It is also the Witches New Year, a time to project what we wish to draw into our lives for the coming year. It is important to be specific, clear, and concise as we send our projections into the Universe at the "Witching Hour".

There is no right way or wrong way to set up your ancestor altar. It can be as big or little depending on space. Create it from the heart and you cannot go wrong.

The picture above is of my personal ancestor altar. I create mine on the fireplace mantle and leave the fire burning for 24 hours.

Some things you may want to include:

* Pictures of loved ones who have crossed

* Items of remembrance or importance to them

* Flowers

* Candles

* Crystals

* Herbs

* Hand written letters to your loved ones who have crossed

* Mulled, Red Wine or favorite beverage to toast

* Dark bread as an offering of feast

* Tea lights

* God or Goddess Statues

* Skulls

* Grave rubbings

* Symbols of the afterlife or ascention

Arrange your altar. Place a tea light in front of your loved ones photos and light them as you recite their name and remember them. If they have crossed into the spirit realm this past year, light a white taper candle to help guide their way for a smooth transition.

Raise a toast in honor of your ancestors with wine or beverage of choice; leave an offering of dark bread for their feast. Allow candles to burn until they extinguish.

Place hand written letters to loved ones on the altar. Take a moment to remember your loved ones, relive memories, communicate thoughts, or ask them for advice. The veil is thin, they are listening.

Samhain Blessings!

Ten Facs You Need To Know About Paganism And Wicca

Ten Facs You Need To Know About Paganism And Wicca
There's a lot of information out there on wicca and Paganism, in
Sure, a lot of people think that just because there's no Grand High wiccan and pagan Council that there must be all kinds of magical carnage going on. Truth is, there are some fairly standard guidelines followed by a number of different Pagan traditions. While they vary from one group to the next, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the concepts. Learn more about the rules of magic before you continue your studies.

2. Not All Witches are Pagans are Wiccans

There are dozens of Pagan traditions, and as many different versions of Wicca. Not all are the same, and just because someone is a witch or Pagan doesn't necessarily mean they practice Wicca. Learn about the differences in paths found among the umbrella term "Paganism."

3. Wicca is a Religion, Not a Fashion Statement

Contrary to what many popular movies might have you believe, you don't have to be a teenage goth princess to be Wiccan. In fact, you don't "have to be" anything at all. wiccans come from all walks of life - they are parents and teens, lawyers, nurses, firefighters, waitresses, teachers and writers. Pagans come from all different walks of life, all socio-economic groups, and all sorts of racial backgrounds. There's no Pagan Dress Code that says you have to toss away your polo shirt or khakis in favor of capes and an all-black wardrobe. On the other hand, if you prefer the goth look, go for it... just remember that goth and Wiccan are not synonymous.

4. Religious Freedom Applies to Wiccans and Pagans Too

Believe it or not, as a Wiccan or Pagan you have the same rights as people of any other religion. Despite the fact that some members of other faiths might disapprove of the existence of Wicca and Paganism, the fact is that if you live in the United States, you're entitled to protection just like anyone else. It's against the law for anyone to discriminate against you because you practice an earth-based faith. Learn about your rights as a Pagan or Wiccan parent, as an employee, and even as a member of the United States military.

5. It's Okay to Be Out of the Broom Closet... or Not

Countless numbers of Pagans and Wiccans have made the choice to "come out of the broom closet"... in other words, they've stopped hiding their spiritual path from others. For many people, this is a huge decision. You may feel that it's not in your best interest to make your religious beliefs known, and that's okay too. If you feel you could be in danger if you reveal that you are Wiccan, or that it might put a strain on family relations, going public might be something you should postpone. Get all the pros and cons on coming out of the broom closet.

6. Wiccans and Pagans Are Not Satanists

Ask any Pagan or Wiccan about the cornerstone of their faith, and they'll probably tell you it's a reverence for their ancestors, a belief in the sacredness of nature, a willingness to embrace the Divine within ourselves, or an acceptance of polarity between the male and female. It may be a combination of those principles. It will not have anything to do with the Satan, Old Scratch, Beelzebub, or any of the other names attributed to the Christian devil. Pagans and Wiccans aren't devil worshippers, Satanists, or Diabolists. Learn more about how Pagans and Wiccans feel about such an entity.

7. Join a Coven, or Practice Solitary?

Many Wiccans and Pagans choose to join a coven or study group because it allows them the chance to learn from like-minded people. It's an opportunity to share ideas and get new perspectives on any number of things. However, for some folks it's just more practical or desirable to remain as a solitary practitioner. If you're considering joining a coven, you'll want to read these tips.

8. Parents and Teens

Nothing will set a teenager at odds with a parent quite like coming into the house wearing a giant pentacle, toting a candle, and yelling, "I'm a witch now, leave me alone!" Fortunately, it doesn't have to be that way. Parents, you may have some concerns about Wicca and Paganism... and teens, you probably aren't sure how to talk to mom and dad about your newfound interest. Rest easy, though. With a little bit of good communication, both parents and teenagers should be able to find a happy medium.

9. You Don't Need a Lot of Fancy Tools

Many people think they need to stock up on hundreds of dollars worth of incense, herbs, wands and candles before they can even begin to practice Wicca or Paganism. That's simply not the case. While a few basic magical tools are nice to have, the key element of most traditions are the beliefs, not the tangible, physical items. If you'd like to gather a very basic "starter kit" of tools, there are several which are common to nearly every tradition.

10. You Can Write Your Own Spells and Rituals

Despite a commonly held (and generally Internet-based) belief, anyone can write a spell. The trick is to recognize what the key elements are to successful spellcrafting - intent or goal, components, and putting it into practice are all key. Don't let anyone tell you that beginners can't write a spell. Just like any other skill set, it will take some practice, but with a little work you can become a perfectly effective spellworker.

The Importance

The Importance Of A Cat In The Practice Of Meditation
THE IMPORTANCE OF A CAT IN THE PRACTICE OF MEDITATIONCUSTOMS TRADITIONS AND RITUALSTHE STORY OF THE MYSTICAL CATFood for Thought ByVIKRAM KARVE

The military is steeped in tradition.

There are many customs, traditions and rituals.

I remember, there was a custom in the army, in the artillery, where they do not light more than two cigarettes with a single matchstick.

In the navy, we do not clink glasses while drinking or making a toast.

If we asked the reason for a certain custom which we found meaningless, our seniors would admonish us: "This is the Naval Tradition"

Even in our day to day life, in the name of tradition, we unquestioningly follow traditions and customs and perform all types of religious, social and superstitious rituals without understanding the spirit behind the ritual. A RITUAL is an action performed purely for SYMBOLIC VALUE. In many cases there is no logic or rational explanation for the ritual. This apocryphal story from ancient wisdom " THE MYSTICAL CAT " illustrates how customs, traditions and rituals begin.

The story also tells you how due to repeated repetition over the years these customs and rituals are gradually established and become a part of culture.

And then, once established, customs, traditions and rituals are blindly followed for years and years, despite the fact that, in most cases, these customs and traditions have lost their significance and the rituals have outlived their utility and meaning. THE MYSTICAL CAT"An Ancient Wisdom Teaching Story"ByVIKRAM KARVE

A seeker joined a monastery to learn meditation and the art of living.

Every evening all students and disciples assembled in the large meditation hall for a discourse by the Spiritual Guru followed by group meditation.

Just before the meditation session commenced the disciples would catch a cat, tie it up and place the tied up cat on the lap of the Spiritual Guru.

The Guru would then start caressing the cat and begin the discourse and meditation session.

After the meditation session was over, the cat would be untied and set free.

This was the established daily ritual.

The Guru would start the meditation session only after the tied up cat was placed on his lap and he was extremely particular about this.

Once when the cat could not be found, the Guru refused to start the meditation session and demanded that the cat be placed on his lap.

So the meditation session was delayed and all the seekers launched a desperate hunt for the cat.

The searched for hours till they found the cat.

The cat was duly tied up and placed on the Guru's lap and only then did he start his discourse-cum-meditation session.

The seeker was quite perplexed at the mystery of the tied up cat. He could not understand the significance of this ritual and how it was connected to meditation.

The seeker wondered: "WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TIED UP CAT PLACED ON THE GURU'S LAP AND WHAT IS ITS CORRELATION WITH MEDITATION?"

He asked around but no one knew the answer till someone told him to ask a wise old man who lived in a cave up the hills.

So our curious seeker trudged up the hills to meet the wise old man and ask him the significance of this time-honoured ritual.

"IT IS LIKE THIS," the wise old man said:

"ONE EVENING, MANY YEARS AGO, WHEN THE THEN SPIRITUAL GURU AND HIS DISCIPLES BEGAN THEIR EVENING MEDITATION, A CAT THAT LIVED IN THE MONASTERY MADE SO MUCH NOISE THAT IT DISTRACTED THEM AND DISTURBED THEIR MEDITATION PRACTICE.

SO THE GURU ORDERED THAT THE CAT BE TIED UP DURING THE EVENING DISCOURSE-CUM-MEDITATION PRACTICE.

THIS PRACTICE OF TYING UP THE CAT BEFORE MEDITATION PRACTICE CONTINUED, SO MUCH SO THAT EVEN AFTER THE TEACHER DIED, THE NEXT GURU CONTINUED THIS TRADITION AND A CAT CONTINUED TO BE TIED UP DURING THE MEDITATION SESSION.

WHEN THE CAT DIED, ANOTHER CAT WAS BROUGHT TO THE MONASTERY TO BE TIED UP DURING THE EVENING MEDITATION SESSION.

AND WHEN THAT CAT DIED TOO, THEY BROUGHT ANOTHER CAT TO BE TIED UP DURING MEDITATION PRACTICE, AND THEN AS CATS KEPT DYING, THEY KEPT REPLACING THE DEAD CATS WITH NEW CATS, AND THE PRACTICE OF TYING UP A CAT DURING MEDITATION CONTINUED.

WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME THIS HAS BECOME SUCH AN ESTABLISHED RITUAL THAT NOW NO ONE CAN DARE TO QUESTION IT. SO IT HAS BECOME A CUSTOM, TRADITION AND ESTABLISHED RITUAL TO TIE UP A CAT DURING THE MEDITATION SESSION."

Years later, the ritual of tying up the cat during the meditation session continued and continued.

Our seeker, who by then had become the Spiritual Guru, wrote a scholarly treatise about the significance of tying up a cat for meditation practice.

I wonder why we accept customs and traditions without understanding their significance?

Just like a blind man lead by others, why do we blindly follow rituals without examining the meaning, logic and significance of that ritual using our own intelligence and judgement?

Why do we follow customs traditions and rituals that are obsolete and have lost their significance and outlived their utility?

If you see any ritual, custom or tradition being blindly followed and for which there seems to be no rational or logical explanation, remember this story of the Mystical Cat, and stop blindly following superstition which has become meaningless in the modern world of today.

Dear Reader - do you follow any rituals which are meaningless in the modern world of today?

How To Make A Pastors Job Joyful

How To Make A Pastors Job Joyful
As a pastor for 33 years, I've experienced the ups and downs ministry brings. Sometimes it seems like I'm on an emotional high after a baptism service, a breakthrough elders' meeting, or a powerful worship service. Other times I've had to battle thoughts of giving up when I receive several critical emails in one week, a staff member is consistently underperforming and I need to confront him, or when it seems like the ministry has hit a lid. However, I believe one thing makes a pastor's job most joyful. See if you agree.

In the most intimate of the Apostle Paul's New Testament letters, Philippians, he gives us a clue to what can make a pastor's job most joyful. He writes this phrase in Philippians 2.16 "in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing."

William Barclay explains the meaning of this verse when he says that Paul uses a term for an athlete who trains. No athlete wants his training to fail. He wants to win the race for which he's training. So, Paul prays that he may not be like an athlete whose training and effort have gone for nothing. For him the greatest prize in life was to know that through him others had come to know and to love and to serve Jesus Christ. [Barclay, W. (Ed.). (1975). "The letters to the Philippians, Colossians, and Thessalonians" (electronic ed., pp. 45-46). Philadelphia: The Westminster John Knox Press.]

In other words, when Paul came to the end of his life, he would not want his sacrifice and service to have been a waste. He is telling the church at Philippi that they bring him the greatest joy when they love God and love others well.

When Christians truly love God and others, it minimizes crabbiness, critical spirits, and nitpicky preferences. It prompts believers to willing give of their time, talent, and treasures. More people extend grace when things don't go their way in the church. And, by the way, the opposite should hold true as well. When we pastors love God and love others well, we extend those same graces to people in our churches.

So how can we encourage our church to make our job joyful and in doing so fulfill Hebrews 13. 17 which says, "Contribute to the joy of their leadership, not its drudgery? (Message) "Consider these suggestions.

1. Model the behavior and attitude you hope those in your church will live out. We can't live by another standard. Neither can we expect others to do what we are unwilling to do ourselves.

2. At appropriate times (not when you're mad at somebody), include this concept in your teaching and preaching. I recently taught Philippians 2 which made it natural to broach the topic.

3. Tell stories of church people who live out godly character and conduct. People emulate what you publicly honor.

4. Thank people when they live out the values that bring you joy. Express it privately and publicly.

What has brought you the greatest joy in ministry? How can you encourage church people to do it more, without becoming self-serving?

Anthropology Of Religion: Magick Popularity

Anthropology Of Religion Paranormal Popularity
The latest bulletin from ReligionLink came out and the title is "Popularity of paranormal soars." The bulletin uses the results of the recent Baylor University survey on religion in America as its starting point. Recall in a previous post on this blog that the poll showed great interest in the paranormal. Below is the introduction to the bulletin, and the entire piece may be found here. This item should be of interest not only because Americans are more inclined to think of the paranormal near Halloween with our stereotypical understandings of the various influences on this holiday, but also because it should raise a series of questions for the church.

The interest in the paranormal is found outside "and inside" the church. What does this say about the church's neglect (other than denunciation) of the issues of spiritual powers and divine guidance?

Many interested in the paranormal use various forms of divination. Christians assume this is biblically off limits when they traditionally cite certain Old Testament texts, but what about those in the Old and New Testaments that appear to involve forms of divination that are viewed more positively?

How will the church engage the many people involved in various forms of folk magic and nature-based spiritualities where the paranormal is more readily accepted?

Here's the introduction to ReligionLink's bulletin:

"As children know, Halloween is a time to let the imagination run wild. A new survey of religious beliefs, however, shows that adults do the same, and not just for Halloween. "Baylor University's expansive survey", released in September 2006, found what it termed a "surprising level" of paranormal belief and experience. According to a 2005 Gallup Poll, about 75 percent of Americans hold some form of belief in the paranormal - extrasensory perception, ghosts, telepathy, clairvoyance, astrology, communicating with the dead, witches, reincarnation or channeling."

Some religions, such as Wicca or neo paganism, draw deeply from the wells of reincarnation and spells. Some traditions or cultures mix elements from traditional, organized religion with the supernatural. Yet most religions are laced with elements of mysticism or the surreal: Consider a voice coming from a burning bush, water turned into wine, lamp oil that lasted eight days, prophets and angels in the Quran.

October is a rich time to explore why so many people believe in the paranormal and how those beliefs are reflected in everyday actions and popular culture. After all, religion and the paranormal share a common challenge: Just because we can't prove it, does that mean it's not there?

Why it Matters

Both nonbelievers and people of faith keep blurring the lines between what they're sure about and what they sense could possibly be. Ordinary people have had dreams that came true, encountered coincidences that don't feel like coincidences, felt the presence of someone they love who has died. Many wonder: How big is the world, and what does it mean to believe in the divine?

Bob Curran Dark Fairies Folklore Spirits And Creatures

Bob Curran Dark Fairies Folklore Spirits And Creatures
We're going to look at a lighter subject from a darker point of view today with author Bob Curran who joins us from Northern Ireland to discuss his book "Dark Fairies". He has been investigating the folkloric roots of the fairy kind, and looking myths and stories from around the world - on all kinds of creatures.

This is not a book for those who believe that fairies are friendly, kindly creatures. In ancient times, the concept of fairies was rather different. They were the often-dangerous embodiment of the land, dark and unpredictable spirits that watched humanity with a envious and hostile eye. We talk about Spirits, Superstition, The Origins in the Northern Lands, Elementals, The People of the Mounds, possession and Sickness It gets more and more interesting with Bob Curran in our next hour as we talk about earth lights, plasma phenomena, marsh gas, ball lights, the Brown mountain lights in North Carolina, Cherokee legend and Native American stories about these kinds of energies or spirits. We talk about our modern interpretation of fairies.

Today we use words like UFO's and Grey's that come in the night and abduct people. The stories are the same but some of the names and our interpretation might have changed slightly. ~Red Ice Creations

Crowley Wand And The Museum Of Witchcraft

Crowley Wand And The Museum Of Witchcraft
Once again I am indebted to Pat of Plant yr Yd Coven for sending me a fascinating story and photos to go with it. This story relates to Aleister Crowley's wand and the Museum of Witchcraft, in Boscastle, Cornwall.

Pat said: "Our High Priestess and myself donated a Wand of Crowleys to the Museum of Witchcraft. She came by it in a roundabout way, and it was, when she obtained it, being used by the children of the lady who owned it at the time, for playing `Harry Potter`*lol*. I have a few pictures of the handover, its now safely ensconced at the Museum of Witchcraft in the Crowley exhibits."

Information about the wand from the Museum of Witchcraft says it is made of bone or ivory and states: "A slender wand consisting of a series of cylinders of bone or ivory decorated with black and red bands and circles, and held together by an iron rod through the core. The wand was given to W.B. Crow by Aleister Crowley... Donated to the museum by Helen Richards and Pat Judson, High Priestess and Priest of the Coven of the Ercall Yew Grove in Shropshire."

You can see a photo of the handover above and the wand in its case at the museum below.

Previous posts that Pat has sent amazing photos and information for include How to Build a Wickerman, Shaft of Light in Bryn Celli Ddu and the Green Witch Festival.

What Is The Effect Of Ordination

328 What Is The Effect Of Ordination To The Priesthood Part 3 Continuation
328. WHAT IS THE EFFECT OF ORDINATION TO THE PRIESTHOOD? (PART 3 CONTINUATION)

(Comp 328 repetition) The anointing of the Spirit seals the priest with an indelible, spiritual character that configures him to Christ the priest and enables him to act in the name of Christ the Head. As a co-worker of the order of bishops he is consecrated to preach the Gospel, to celebrate divine worship, especially the Eucharist from which his ministry draws its strength, and to be a shepherd of the faithful.

"IN BRIEF"(CCC 1595) Priests are united with the bishops in sacerdotal dignity and at the same time depend on them in the exercise of their pastoral functions; they are called to be the bishops' prudent co-workers. They form around their bishop the presbyterium which bears responsibility with him for the particular Church.

They receive from the bishop the charge of a parish community or a determinate ecclesial office. TO DEEPEN AND EXPLAIN(CCC 1566) "It is in the Eucharistic cult or in the "Eucharistic assembly" of the faithful ("synaxis") that they exercise in a supreme degree their sacred office; there, acting in the person of Christ and proclaiming his mystery, they unite the votive offerings of the faithful to the sacrifice of Christ their head, and in the sacrifice of the Mass they make present again and apply, until the coming of the Lord, the unique sacrifice of the New Testament, that namely of Christ offering himself once for all a spotless victim to the Father" (LG 28; cf.

1 Cor 11:26
). From this unique sacrifice their whole priestly ministry draws its strength (Cf. PO 2). REFLECTION(CCC 1567) "The priests, prudent cooperators of the episcopal college and its support and instrument, called to the service of the People of God, constitute, together with their bishop, a unique sacerdotal college ("presbyterium") dedicated, it is true, to a variety of distinct duties.

In each local assembly of the faithful they represent, in a certain sense, the bishop, with whom they are associated in all trust and generosity; in part they take upon themselves his duties and solicitude and in their daily toils discharge them" (LG 28 SS 2). Priests can exercise their ministry only in dependence on the bishop and in communion with him.

The promise of obedience they make to the bishop at the moment of ordination and the kiss of peace from him at the end of the ordination liturgy mean that the bishop considers them his co-workers, his sons, his brothers and his friends, and that they in return owe him love and obedience. [END]

"(NEXT QUESTION: HOW DOES A PRIEST CARRY OUT HIS PROPER MINISTRY?

)"

Jyotishya The Science Of Bharat

Jyotishya The Science Of Bharat

JYOTISHYA- THE SCIENCE OF BHARAT

(Modern discoveries in ancient science)

There are a few scientific discoveries that are not found mentioned in Varahamihira's Brhat-Samhita.

How do heavenly bodies remain in the skies? How is it that they do not fall? Everybody thinks that it was Newton who found the answer to such questions. The very first stanza in the Suryasiddhanta, which is a very ancient treatise, states that it is the force of attraction that keeps the earth from falling.

In Sankara's commentary on the Upanisads there is a reference to the earth's force of attraction. If we throw up an object it falls to the ground. This is not due to the nature of object but due to the earth's force of attraction. "Akarsana-sakti" is force of attraction, the power of drawing or pulling something. The breath called "prana" goes up, "apana" pulls it down. So the force that pulls something downward is apana. The Acharya says the earth has apana-sakti.

The Prasnopanisad (3.

states: "The deity of the earth inspires the human body with apana". In his commentary on this, Sankara observes that, just as an object thrown up is attracted by the earth, so prana that goes up is pulled down by apana. This means that our Upanisads contain a reference to the law of gravitation. There are many such precious truths embedded in our ancient sastras. Because of our ignorance of them we show inordinate respect for ideas propounded by foreigners, ideas known to us many centuries before their discovery by them.

Our Jyotisa is also some thousands of years old. Even so it

foresaw the mathematical systems prevalent in the world today.

At the beginning of the kalpa, all grahas were in alignment. But over the ages they have changed their courses. When another kalpa commences, they will again remain in alignment. The "samkalpa" we make before the performance of any ritual contains a description of the cosmos, a reference to the time cycle, and so on. All this is part of Jyotisa.

Centuries ago, we knew not only about the earth's force of attraction but also about its revolution round the sun. Aryabhata, Varahamihira and others spoke of the heliocentric system long before the Western astronomers or scientists. Until the 16th century people in Europe believed that the earth remained still at the centre of the universe and that the sun revolved around it. They further believed that this was how day and night were created. If anybody expressed a different view he was burned at the stake by the religious leaders.

"It is the earth that revolves around the sun, not the sun round the earth", declared Aryabhata. He used a beautiful term to describe the logic behind his view : "laghava-gaurava nyaya". "Laghu" means light, small, etc and "laghava" is derived from it. The opposite of "laghu" is "guru", weighty, big, etc.

"Guru" also denotes a weighty personality, a great man, like an acharya or teacher, one who has mastered a sastra. If the acharya is guru the disciple must be laghu. The student is small and "light" compared to his guru. So he goes round the latter. This is based on "laghava-gaurava nyaya". By adducing this reason for the earth going round the sun, Aryabhata combined science with a traditional sastric belief.

In the old days religious leaders in Europe were opposed to science and even burned scientists as heretics. But today we join the descendants of the very

same people to make the preposterous charge that the Hindu religion stood in the way of scientific advancement, that it ignored the matters of this world because of its concern for the other world. As a matter of fact our traditional sastras are a storehouse of science.

"The sun remains still and it is the earth that goes round it. It is only because the earth revolves round the sun that it seems to us that the sun rises every day in the east and sets in the west". This is mentioned in Aitareya Brahmana of Rgveda. The text says clearly : "The sun neither rises nor sets".

That all learned people in Bharat (India) knew about the earth's revolution is shown by a passage in the Sivotkarsa-Manjari by Nilakantha Diksita who was minister of Tirumala Nayaka. One stanza in this work begins like this : "Bhumir bhramayati" and from it we must also gather that the author's great-uncle, Appayya Diksita, also knew about this truth. What is the content of this verse?

Siva is called "Astamurti". Earth, water, air, fire, space, the sun and the moon, the yajamana or sacrificer-they are all the personification (murti) of Isvara. Among them only the yajamana has no bhramana or motion. All the rest have bhramana, says Appayya Diksita. That he has said so is mentioned in the verse in question by his younger brother's grandson, Nilakantha Diksita.

We see that air has movement, that fire does not remain still, that water keeps flowing. When we look up into the sky, we notice that the sun and the moon do not remain fixed to their spots. As for space, it is filled with sound and it cannot be still. But the earth apparently stands still. Even so, says Appayya Diksita, it has motion. "It revolves".

Let us now consider the shape of the earth. Europeans claim that they were the first to discover that the earth is like a ball, that in the past it had been thought to be flat like a plate. All right. What word do we use for "geography"? "Bhugola sastra", not just "bhu-sastra". We have known from early times that the earth is a "gola", a sphere.

We call the universe with all its galaxies, "Brahmanda". It means the egg created by Brahma (the cosmic egg). An egg is not exactly spherical in shape, but oval. According to modern science the universe too is oval in shape. The cosmos is always in motion, so observe modern astronomers. "Jagat" is the word by which we have known it from Vedic times. What does the word mean? That which does not stand still but is always in motion, that which "is going".

In our country too there were people who refused to believe that the earth rotates on its axis. I will tell you the view of one such school of thought. The earth's circumference is about 25,000 miles. So if it rotates once in 24 hours then it means it rotates more than 1,000 miles an hour or 16 or 17 miles in one minute.

Those who did not accept the fact of the earth's rotation tried to prove their point thus :"There is a tree in Pune [in Maharashtra]. Imagine there is a crow perched on one of its branches. It leaves its perch this moment and soars high and, by the next minute, it perches itself again on the branch of the same tree in Pune. If the rotation of the earth were a fact how would this be possible? The crow should have descended to a place 16 or 17 miles away from where it had started.

I have not checked on how this argument was answered. But when I asked people who know modern science they said : "Surrounding the earth for some 200 miles is its atmosphere. Beyond that there are other spheres. When the earth rotates these too rotate with it". I may have gone slightly wrong in stating the view of modern science. However it be, there is no doubt that when the earth rotates, its atmosphere also rotates with it.

What are called Arabic numerals actually belong to Bharat (India). This fact was discovered by Westerners themselves. The zero is also our contribution and without it mathematics would not have made any advance. Bhaskaracharya established the subtle truth that any quantity divided by zero is infinity ("ananta").

He concludes one of his mathematical treatises with a benedictory verse in which he relates zero to the Ultimate Reality.

When the divisor goes on decreasing the quotient keeps increasing, does it not? If you divide 16 by 8 the quotient is 2; if the same quantity is divided by 4 the result is 4. Divided by 2, the quotient is 8. Divided by zero? The quotient will be infinity. Whatever the number divided, the result will be infinity if

the divisor is 0. Bhaskaracharya gives it the name of "khahara". "Kham" means zero, "haram" means division. Bhaskaracharya says : "I pay obeisance to the Paramatman that is Infinity".

Master Magicians And Golden Dawn Apprentices

Master Magicians And Golden Dawn Apprentices Reply To Nick Farrell

BY ALPHA OMEGA IMPERATORDAVID GRIFFIN

Frater Nick Farrel recently wrote an article entitled "Apprenticed to Magic". You can read it here.

Nick FarrellI am frankly surprised how much there is to agree with in this article.

Yes, we DO need to "put our foot down" and teach the right way to do things as I have written over and over, for example here.

Yes, there ARE crazy kids jumping into the deep end of the pool with the grown-ups, as I have written about previously here.

Nick's experience suggests that "money will have to change hands." The Alpha Omega agrees completely and looks forward to one less person attacking the A.O. for accepting dues.Yes, there ARE too many "Orders" just doing the Regardie book. I have documented this for decades, for example here.Yes, the competition between orders has repeatedly gone too far. I have written about this extensively, for example here.

"Nick Farrell writes:"I used to think that the relaxing of systems at the end of the 20th century and the access to more information thanks to the Internet was a good thing. I liked the ideas of the autocratic orders which were the bane of my existence had faded. Now I am not so certain."Nick Farrell has been involved in the Golden Dawn a long time and his experiences reflects a common theme. It's wonderful reading about his evolution as a teacher of the occult because it is one that I have been spared. The Golden Dawn System of Magic was designed to avoid many of the problems Nick has encountered.

"Nick writes: "There once was a time that you would be taught by one person who would show you their magical system, which was often worked out over years by experience."Frater Farrell need not convince me of the importance of the Master-Apprentice relationship in the Golden Dawn. My own Appenticeship to Hermetic Master Alchemist, Frater Lux E Tenebris, has been worth its weight in gold - And in more than one sense!

The Master-Apprentice relationship lies at the very heart not only of the Golden Dawn, but of the entire Hermetic and Rosicruican traditions. It has always been this way. It is this way today. And it will always remain this way as well.

This is why, in the Alpha Omega, the magical development of each new student is taken on by an A.O. Adept from the outset. As one advances in the A.O., this Master-Apprentice relationship takes on more and more importance.

It is for this reason, due to the need for direct coaching, that the A.O. created our 1,000 Points of Light initiative. This is why the Alpha Omega presently provides Ritual Magic coaching to Self-Iniaties and Solitaries in 8 languages in the form of Webinars, Workshops, one-on-one Skype sessions, and ongoing Ritual Magic dojos.

Nick Farrell feels compelled to "go back to the old ways" after his vast experience working with initiates. Fortunately, the AO doesn't have to "go back to the old ways" because we never left. In fact, they aren't the "old ways" at the AO, they're the "Only Ways."

I am pleased to witness how Isis, at long last, is gathering together the divided pieces of Osiris, as Adepts from across the entire Golden Dawn community begin to stand together - not under the banners of the A.O. - but as a community sharing a common spiritual philosophy - united by our mutual obligation to properly train the Adepts of the future.

The need for enough Golden Dawn Adepts to properly train Apprentices is great - greater than even the Alpha Omega alone can bear.

Only as a community of Adepts drawn together by the strength of our common Rosicrucian bonds can the Golden Dawn claim its rightful place in the 21st Century.

Stand with us.

What Is Hinduism

What Is Hinduism
There is a paucity of information in the West as to what is the religion called "Hinduism". The truth of the matter is that it is no single religion, but a grouping of religions, all of which originated at different times and locals in what is commonly called the Indian Subcontinent.

Anthropologically speaking, the earliest two religions of the Bharat Peninsula (as the Indians themselves often refer to their country) were Vaishnavism, as epitomized by the various Vedas and Upanishads, and Shaivism, found in the earliest Texts in Tamil.

The Vedic civilization is believed to have formed around the Saraswati River, now mostly a dry ditch seen only in satellite photos, which relocated to the area around the Indus River when the Saraswati dried up (in other words, modern day Eastern Iran and Afghanistan, relocating to modern Pakistan). The Vedas themselves may (or may not) predate the Saraswati civilization; indeed, some find passages in the Sama Veda which appears to have originated either in the farthest Arctic regions or even off-planet, depending on who you believe. The infamous caste system of present-day India was due to a mis-reading of the Vedas; originally it was little different from the European system of Guilds.

At any rate, the Vedic civilization was based on the Vedas, which spoke the worship of Vishnu (hence Vaishnavism) and his ten avatars (the tenth is assumed to be incarnated yet in the future). The Upanishads expanded upon the Vedas, and other great poems, such as the Mahabharata (of which the popular Bhagavad Gita is a part), further resulted in the religion's growth among the people.

The ancient Tamil documents spoke of Shiva as the Creator (with his Shakti, which can either be seen as his creative energy, his feminine side, or even his wife). The Tamil-speaking (and In the background, for whatever reason the women were mostly left out of the observances of this religion, and from this rose the worship of Devi, or Shakti, which today is called Shaktism. All three groups today include male and female worshippers, but only the Shaktins have any females in the priesthood.

The fourth, and smallest, sect which makes up "Hinduism" is called Smarta or Smartism. The Smartas believe in the Vedas and other Vaishnava writings, but rather than believe in Vishnu as the Supreme Deity, they feel it is up to the believer to choose his or her primary deity from among the gods. The main effect this has had upon Hinduism has been the naming of the ultimate deity as Brahman, as he is often referred to in the Vedas, and allowing Vishnu, Shiva, and and Brahma to be seen as a tripartate form of Brahman; they can be trivialized to "preserver, destroyer, and creator", as they often are when seen by the West, or considered each and all to be full Brahman.

Around the 6th Century b.c.e., the 24th Tirthankar, Mahavira, solidified the Tirthankar teachings into Jainism, still a powerful sect despite its small size and belief non-procreation, as well as in the holiness of the tiniest creature on the planet. This is perhaps the gentlest religion on the planet, as it reveres all life and seeks to harm nothing in any way.

The next "reform movement" in Hinduism was begun by Gautama, called "the Buddha". At one point in time, Buddhism encompassed not only most of India but also much of eastern Asia. The earliest origins are clouded in history, but the Second Council (which became schismatic) was thought to have been held around 100 b.c.e. As the Buddha mostly taught the same basic spirituality but was essentially non-theistic (practice was emphasized over belief), it engulfed many other native religions in the region, but this was ultimately responded to.

In Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kashmir, from 800 to 1100 c.e., new versions of Shaivite thought emerged, adopting the Vedas but promoting Shiva as the Supreme Deity and expanding upon both ancient teachings and the more modern Buddhist teachings, showing the "fallacies" in either or both, resulting in Virashaiva and Kashmir (Trika) Shaivism. In the predominantly Vaishnavite areas of Punjab and Bengal, Krishna emerged from the Mahabharata as the Supreme Form of Deity (Vishnu).

Around this time also came the Islamic invasion, which nearly wiped out Vedic teachings and destroyed thousands of About 1600 c.e., the great teacher Arjan Dev, in Punjab, collected the greatest surviving teachings in the Hindu world, in poetry form, forming what became the Adi Granth, and created the Sikh religion using this book as their center. This book by itself preserved much of the sacred poetry from the torch of the Moslems, as the Sikhs became known as ferocious fighters and, slowly, beat back the invading Moslems. The Adi Granth was expanded by later Sikh Gurus, until, upon the death of the 10th Guru, the book itself was proclaimed the True Guru (Guru Granth Sahib).

The various forms of Hinduism have changed the West in many small ways, but are still largely misunderstood in the West. For instance, Buddhist monks created "malas", necklaces of meditation beads, well before Christ; when this came into contact with the Catholic Church, I cannot say, but it was modified into the Rosary. Madame Blavatsky in the 19th Century c.e. tried to adopt and even alter Hindusim and present it to the West as Theosophy; she hoped to raise J. Krishnamurti to be the Avatar for the New Age, but the man himself, upon reaching majority, declined the honor.

Much more could be said; indeed, much of what I just presented is in doubt and the sources may be fuzzy. Hinduism today consists of (in the view of Hindus) Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Smartism, and Shaktism, but it is easily seen how one could include Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism, as well as other sub-sects (such as ISKCON, a branch of Vaishnavism), into the mix.

In the last 20 years, Western Pagans have found many similarities between their beliefs and those of the various Hindu religions. The result is IndoPaganism, which was reported on in PanGaea Magazine, Spring 2007, by Devi Spring.

There is no end to this subject. It is my fervent hope that this document can be improved, especially with the addition of appropriate footnotes.

Confidence In Religion Drops Sightings Martin Marty

Confidence In Religion Drops Sightings Martin Marty
Would you be surprised to learn that there has been a drop in confidence for organized religion and religious leaders? Survey after survey tells us that more and more people are dropping out. Many find religious folk to be hypocrites, if not worse. Some of the charges leveled against the religious community are spot on, others not so much. Religious communities are no monolithic, so we must be careful that we don't paint with too wide of brushes.

In this edition of Sightings, Martin Marty visits recent "measurers of opinion," which tell us that the military comes out on top - and that despite recent scandals at the top. We're not as bad as Congress, but not where we once were. We could suggest that this is all an anti-religious (read anti-Christian) animus on the part of media, etc., but I don't think that would help our cause. But the key point that Dr. Marty wants us to hear is that the public "is "paying attention! I invite you to read Marty's post and offer your thoughts.

By the way, I received a nice note from Professor Marty giving permission for me to share these postings with you!

Confidence in Religion Drops

by MARTIN E. MARTY

Monday April 22 2013

Three "War College" scholars, in the Spring 2013 issue of "Daedalus" (see reference), discuss some of the reasons why the military wins more confidence than other American institutions. The military is not our subject; those authors may be biased because of their vocation and location, and we may lack full confidence in Harris and Gallup and Pew and other measurers of opinion. Still, even if statistics strung out in editorials can weary the eye, they do tell us something. In our case, the "War College" authors drew on a Harris poll conducted two years ago. Let's look at what this poll turned up about "Organized Religion" to see if there are insights or lessons for those who care about religion in American life.

In the Harris poll, 57% of those questioned had "a great deal of confidence" in the military, and only 10% had hardly any. "Small business" came in second, while "major companies, Law firms, The press, Wall Street" and "Congress" evoked least confidence; they came in twelfth to fifteenth. We keep our eye on "Organized Religion" which came in sixth. As for "leaders in institutions," the military rated highest, while religious leaders attracted "a great deal of confidence" among 22%. But here's a slide: in 1966 religious institutions inspired high confidence among 41% of the people, that "high" figure dropped to 22% by 1980, near where it still hovers today.

These instruments are not sufficiently fine-tuned to be used to ascertain what factors contributed to declines in confidence shown the favored or the unfavored. So one cannot find here what the usually highlighted features in each decline were. Look elsewhere to see what "clergy abuse" has done to inspire loss of confidence. We can speculate about other contributors: mass media focus on frailty, some financial criminality or sloppiness, sharpening suspicion among "nones" and "secularists" and "drop-outs," distorted vision among the cultured observers, etc.

What religious leaders and members should take from surveys like this is a renewed awareness of the fact that publics "are" watching. True, some people are remote from the exercises of life in religious institutions and thus their conclusions are born of ignorance. Some may want to find reasons to distance themselves from the efforts and effects of "organized religion." View it negatively, or draw only on the observations and conclusions of those who focus on the weaknesses and wrongs of religious institutions, and your case is made. The much-noticed "social media" certainly contribute, because images mediated through them are unmonitored, unfiltered, undisciplined, and thus, in their "raw" form they can spread negative images more readily than they can positives.

It is much more difficult to project images of what goes on among serious seekers, sacrificial givers and workers, agents of charity or quiet care for others, than it is to feature scandalous public expressions. All this does not mean that religious institutions simply have to do better jobs of public relations, though most of them could certainly do better then they characteristically do now. The point of these comparisons is this: there is no place to hide. Religious institutions cannot be at home in the public sphere to serve in it and expect to be given special treatment, if they ever could. There is no reason to expect that they can run for cover now and go unnoticed. Christians among them cite words of Jesus: "Woe to you if all speak well of you." They evidently don't have to worry as much about "woe" as do military leaders, because so few people these years speak well of them and their institutions.

Lithia The Summer Solstice

Lithia The Summer Solstice

BY GORDON IRELAND

Lithia is also known as the summer solstice, Midsummer, All Couples Day, and Saint John's Day. Litha is one of the fire festivals and occurs on the longest day of the year. This is the time of year when the sun reaches its highest apex, at the Tropic of Cancer. It is the day when light overcomes darkness, a day of power. Litha also is one of the "quarter days" or the Lesser Sabbats.

Litha, as a Wiccan holiday, has the Sun/God reaching full power, and the Goddess pregnant with child. She holds promise of the bounty of the harvest yet to come. Litha's name, depending which author you read, has its roots in Greco-Roman, (McCoy, page 149) or according to Our Lady of the Prairie Coven, Litha means opposite of Yule. This may possibly have Saxon roots, though that is pure speculation. No others authors that were researched for this article offered any explanation as to the origins of Litha other than it is name for Midsummer.

Midsummer traditionally marks the beginning of summer (i.e. schools out). Actually midsummer marks the actual middle of the Celtic summer, falling between Beltane and Lugnasadh. Midsummer is known also as a night of magic, made famous by William Shakespeare with his play Midsummer's Nights Dream. As a Quote from Puck can attest to:

Captain of our fairy band,

Helena is here at hand;

And the youth, mistook by me,

Pleading for a lover's fee.

Shall we their fond pageant see?

Lord, what fools these mortals be!

(Shakespeare, Act 3, Scene 2)

June in Europe and America is historically the busiest month for weddings, hence All Couples Day. This tradition begins because this time of the year was a time of rest for the Ancient Celts, the time between planting and harvesting. June allowed time for the wedding festivals and rest. This is best described in an English child's nursery rhyme.

"marry in the month of May

most surely you will rue the day.

Marry in June when roses grow

And happiness you'll always know"

Author Unknown (McCoy, 167)

Saint John's Day celebrates the birth of St. John exactly six months before the birth of Christ as he foretold of Christ's coming. The Celts, as was their way, easily adopted this day and incorporated into their summer solstice festivities just as they did with Beltane/May Day. A poem demonstrates how the Celts and other cultures were able to incorporate the various pagan meanings of Litha with a Christian one.

In praise of St. John-

May he give health to my heart.

St. John comes and St. John goes,

Mother, marry me off soon!

Author Unknown (Henes, page 61)

Litha's celebrations are as varied as the authors who write them are. The times that the ritual should take place are also varied. McCoy suggests that the ritual take place on the eve before June 21. (Pages 163-66) McCoy further states that during the ritual one should jump over or walk in between two purifying fires. (Pages 153-54) Author of Celestially Auspicious Occasions: Seasons, Cycles and Celebrations, Donna Henes, says that Midsummer is a sun festival and is best done during the daylight hours between sunrise and high noon. (Page 56)

Litha rituals as all ritual should be personal. Several of the authors give basic outlines some for covens, some for the solitary. Most of the authors used for this essay are Wiccan. This particular point of view uses a very pregnant Lady and a Lord at the height of his powers. This ritual, no matter what the tradition or the Gods/Goddesses involved should include either the sun or a fire, or both.

"FOODS"

Litha's foods vary, depending upon the author and tradition you adhere to. Cunningham suggests fruits, Buckland, cakes and ale, and Starhawk, bread and drink. However, given that this is a day to celebrate the sun, foods should be of yellow (gold), orange or reds.

Opening Our Hearts

Opening Our Hearts To The Sun New Moon In Leo August 2007
Nova Leo Lunation on August 12th exact on 4:02PM PDT or 7:02PM EDT

Total self-expression can burst forth on this highly inspirational event bubblingwith radiant energy. Sun and Moon cojoin @ 20 degrees (19* 51') Leo with the Sabian message: American Indians perform majestic ritual to the Sun!

Leo Planets Posited in the 7th of the DC Chart

With Mercury quickly applying to an exact conjunction and combust Sun-Moon in Leo

there will be a strong tendency toward a capacity for concentration and focus.

If that was all there was it wouldn't be that remarkable except that since Venus now retrograde just slipped back in Leo and is meeting Saturn during this lunation.

This Saturn-Venus conjunction is the second this year with the last occuring on October 1st in the highly, service and earth oriented sign of Virgo - a huge shift from the glamourous life as depicted on the American Dream Tube.

We have recently seen the stock markets react in volatile meltdown to the housing crisis based on subprime loans that have finally blown up.

Despite the ominous tones present in this lunation - Chart for DC has all those Leo planets posited in the 7th house of foreign relations, treaties and/or disputes...Yes not only is this the house of open enemies but of business relationships and agreements. We will soon see how Venus Retrograde meeting Saturn direct and moving Full Speed Ahead to soon change signs into Virgo on September 2nd.

Venus is the natural ruler of the 7th house which signifies our relations with other societies or nations or organizations. (Now many more will wake up to the total destructive path that the US Empire of Neo Cons has hoisted upon the rest of the world.) All these Leo planets with the 7th Cusp at 0 degrees Leo puts even more emphasis on treaties, alliances, marriage and divorce issues, public relations, the balance of trade, the conditions of women - this also includes the divine feminine which is waking up as GAIA and very pissed off!

Leo is about courage, being the center of attention and it is also about Joy!

He who kisses the joy as it flies, lives in eternity's sunrise. WILLIAM BLAKE

As Barbara Hand Clow says about this remarkable event: " Sun/Moon/Mercury exactly opposite Neptune in Aquarius (as well as Chiron) is very significant because Neptune in Aquarius (1998-2012) has been guiding our spiritual opening all the way through the Galactic Underworld-1999-2011. "

Not only will the housing crisis accelerate but our sense of time is catalyzed by all these Neptune oppositions - there is a sense that that which was solid (like the empire's 3D Realitiy pronouncements including the phony War on Terror are dissolving into a greater, much larger dimensional shift.

Chiron the wounded healer @ 13 Aquarius is a barometer for our own deeper psychological insights with the Sabian Symbol: Neighbors have gathered to hear the news in a rural mansion equipped with a short wave radio. The host fiddles with the antenna to get a better signal. At this juncture we all are ready to get an accurate picture of our own interior cultural and spiritual reality...

Notice that the new moon chart also has Mars in Gemini (in the 4th) opposing Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 10th to make up one arm of a mutable, life changing cross with the Nodes of destiny in Pisce-Virgo making up the other arm. Mars in multi-directional Gemini is symbolically located in the 4th house of real estate and land values, mines, coal pits, minerals, quarries, the weather in direct conflict with Jupiter (prosperity and expansion). Jupiter is found in the 10th house of the DC Chart: the 10th which rules the government, the leadership or ruling class. In a nation's chart it rules the national reputation and prestige, world opinion, the party in power, the chief executive - ENOUGH SAID!

With Jupiter recently moving direct this mutable grand square with Pisces karmic focus on awakening true Christed compassion should allow many to see the root cause of America's primary difficutlites which have resulted in wasting precioius life and resources to wage

an unjust, antiquated and totally immoral war. This highly adaptable grand cross with Jupiter (sphere of the masters) applying to another SQ with Uranus the trickster bringing many surprises and sextile to Chiron opening us to a necessary healing process. The Sun ruler of Leo will shine on our need to protect the precious nature of life and the pursuit of happiness by ending all war once and for all.
