A friend called up excitedly saying she was going to get her kundalini awakened in three days. Sheer curiosity made me accompany her. A man in white clothes sat in a small flat with pictures of his gurus, mumbling"shlokas" and made us sit in a hen position for half an hour. My kundalini didn't like the hen position and so nothing happened to my body.
Swami Girishanandaji Saraswati of Vrindavan advocates bhakti or devotion as this path requires no qualifications. In "jnana or "knowledge, Brahmn is not the universe, nor sky, nor senses, nor mind. This is "'"neti/ neti"'" process, repeating which one becomes thoughtless. In "jnana" the entire world is illusory like a dream, only"Brahmn" is real- '"Brahma satya jagat mithya."'" The world is neither unreal nor real. The world is mere projection of self. "Jnana" requires strong discriminating ability. Krishna says, "It is more difficult to realize the formless God than One with form" (12.5). Very few seekers with intense spiritual longing could pursue Adi Shankra's teachings, so various teachers have come to present their own versions of bhakti marga.
Ramakrishna Paramhansa said, for a devotee God is everything. He is inside us and outside us. A devotee wants to eat sugar, and not become sugar. He says, 'O God, I am Your servant, Your child, Your Part'. He does not say, 'I am Brahmn'. Devotees accept universe as real, manifestation of God's power. They say, we are all children of God, and the sky, earth, fire, water, stars, moon, sun, mountains, ocean, humans, birds animals are all His creation.
A yogi who wants to realise the Supreme Soul withdraws his mind from objects and tries to concentrate on Paramatman. His ideal is union of embodied soul and Supreme Soul. So, in the first stage of spiritual discipline, he retires into solitude and with undivided attention practices meditation in a fixed posture.
In Vedantic reasoning Brahmn has no attributes. The real nature of Brahmn cannot be described. But so long as your individuality is real, the world also is real, and equally real are the different forms of God and the feeling that God is a Person. The path of bhakti is good and easy. Who can fully know infinite God? And what need is there of knowing the infinite? Having attained this rare human birth, my supreme need is to develop love for God.
It took Arjuna 18 chapters of Gita to get rid of attachment to world, it took jnani Uddhava eleventh skanda to get rid of his bindings to the world but the gopis understood the wisdom that God alone is real in two shlokas. In Kurukshetra during a solar eclipse, Krishna consoled the gopis, 'I am the beginning and end of all created beings and exist both within and without them, just as the elements ether, water, earth, air and fire are the beginning and end of all material objects and exist both within and without them. In this way all created things reside within the basic elements of creation, while the spirit souls pervade the creation, remaining in their own true identity. You should see both of these - the material creation and the self - as manifest within Me, the imperishable Supreme Truth', (10.82.45, 10.82.46).
The gopis immediately found the self-luminous Atman because of their absorption in Him. Devotional love appears easy in beginning but requires God's Grace. A bhakta has no pride, he is like cooked rice.
