Philip Carr-Gomm an expert on Druidry has written a book that is a tour de force. Covering the magical history of Britain all the way from it's prehistoric Shamanistic beginning all the way up to the present. The book is comprehensive, informative and very interesting. if you are new to magic I advise you pick up a copy of this book and read it. The over view will help you get to where you want to go in the realm of magic.
Not only does the book offer a rich textured history of magic but it also comes with exercises the novice can do so they can get their feet wet. If you are a long term practitioner then this is your chance to dabble in something a bit outside of your field. For further exploration the book offers a treasure trove of web links and The state of magic moved on as the landscape of Britain is filled with landmarks that at first modern Brits took no notice of. This changed with the likes of John Aubrey and William Stukely who recognized them as Pagan holy sites and worthy of attention. later on other people would find our they were connected by Ley lines. Originally they were straight line paths from one place to the next. Trade caravans and pilgrims followed these routes. in around 1925 it was theorized that these land lines were like energy routes and could be harness for magical practice. To tap into these Ley lines one could use a variety of methods but one stood out and that was dowsing.
By use of tools inclusive of pendulums and dowsing rods Ley lines could be discovered. Dowsing is also an effective means for finding water and oil. many dowsers will tell you never to use dowsing for personal gain or unearned wealth. Druids who were the philosophers among the Celts rose to prominence. Their writing was using the Ogham alphabet. Now not much is known about the Druids so we have what is called an imaginative reconstruction. The Romans obliterated any traces of Druidic culture. The reconstructions come from scratch. Druidism or neo-druidism developed in Britain growing through three stages. First group mimicking the Freemason was more like a workers club offering fraternity, friendship and union style benefits. it was a means of support. The second phase was more of a cultural celebration where in the Brits who joined still retained their Christian affiliation while practicing Celtic/druidic rites as a cultural thing. Finally the druids became a spiritual magical movement. They modeled themselves after the Mason with initiations and ceremonies and casting circles. Symbolic use if herbs, animal totems and vision quests are made use of.
No magic book on England would be complete without mentioning Merlin. Some call him Mardyn the wild one. No one knows who he really is. They know he existed; of course King Arthur is something else entirely. Merlin was an adviser to the king. In reality he may have been a chieftain who came from Ireland and Scotland. Gfrey Monmouth spoke of him in his works. Many feel that Merlin's prophecies came to pass. Others still say they are yet to pass. The chapter continues with further talk on the legends of the Grail and their internal spiritual uses.
As the Romans were forced to flee the Anglo Saxons and the Jutes entered the scene. A system of magic and sorcery was built upon the foundation of what was left behind of the Romans and celts added to the Germanic tribes brought with them. The Anglo Saxon brought with them beliefs in elves, dwarves, gnomes and faeries. They also brought the Runic alphabet with them. The Runes branched off and took different courses in Britain then they did in Germany. The Anglo Saxon had a belief that sickness was caused by mischievous elves. The Anglo Saxon sorcerer has verbal charms and herbs that were meant to counteract such things. The Herbs were often imbued with powers bestowed up them by certain astral bodies. The Runes were used for fortune telling and Binding runes could be used for magical spells. Binding is when runes were worn as a talisman or amulet. Two runes would be combined for certain desired result.
High magic came to play with the importation of Alchemy. Alchemists in the west have always sought two things: how to turn metals into gold and how to perfect the soul. Alchemists in the East also wanted to perfect the soul but they were also searching for immortality. Eventually Alchemy would lead to chemistry but the idea of certain herbs being associated with planetary influence and perfecting the soul would find their way into High Magic. High Magic is all about Theurgist magic which is geared for perfecting the soul. The book has a few real interesting activities associated with alchemy that can be performed at home.
John Dee was very interested in both Astrology and alchemy. A gifted magician he plunged into magic whole heartedly. His interest in magic would lead to an interest in angels. He was a favorite of the Elizabethan court. He would get together with a cohort who is clairvoyant who was able to decipher the Enochian language. They would later go off treasure hunting with his cohort Edward Kelley. Their treasure hunting exploits were not as successful as hoped. Edward Kelley ended up getting arrested. John Dee retired.
Low magic is using magic to procure things like love, money and even fighting of sickness. It had much in common with Anglo Saxon sorcery. The people that come to mind are Witches, Wiccans and Cunning folk. Wicca was introduced in 1954 by Gerald Gardner. Without going into his life details Wicca has been controversial. It made the term witch a positive connotation. Their focus was on positive magic. The controversy is the actual age of whatr is called Wicca. Witch craft is not the same as Wicca in al cases.
The original witches were actually cunning folk who lived in the countryside villages. They would perform magick to protect people from the evil work of witches. They would also say their incantation invoking Jesus. The second group of witches were those accused of witch craft and burned at the stake. Many were innocent. Finally there is Wicca.
Wicca took many things of ceremonial magic including invocations from the Key of Solomon. They also took the initiation from the Masons. Combining theories from India and the far east, Gerald Gardner formulated his own brand of magic.
The history of magic continues with descriptions of Alesister Crowley, Freemason The Golden Dawn all the way through Chaos Magick. The book is too exhaustive to give a thorough summarization unless you are writing a term paper. It has interviews, places to visit, activities, book you name it. This book gets five stars out of five stars if you are any way into magic then buy the book ASAP.Enjoy the blog

On the war front, straight out of their evil bag o' tricks, the new world order psychopaths will use several large false flag events to stir the cauldron of war. This, as the month of October progresses.
This week, look for the threat of 'no oil' from the Mideast to be used as a means to rile up the people, and get them on the side of the establishment. This will fail for the most part.
On the home front, as non-issue, idiocracy news rules the mainstream media, more and more people will continue to look for, and rely on alternative sources. Now, a new breed of journalist muckraker rises from the ashes of the lying, dying corp-gov news empire.
On the food front, Farm workers needed! Sadly, there are small speciality farmers who can't find workers, even though they're willing to pay top dollar. This is not from a lack of available talent, but because of the black-widow grip the welfare system has on the people.
Get smart, those of you who are able bodied. Take advantage of this opportunity, and learn how to grow food. Nothing will be more valuable in the future. Nothing.

On the energy front, this is a confusing picture right now. For one thing, the dark-side factions are in-fighting over how fast THEY will severely limit energy usage - in their bid for complete control of the people. Meanwhile, inventions are hot and heavy, but the inventors of these energy devices have no 'good' way to enter the general marketplace.
To state once again: "Consider setting up a backup energy system - any kind you can manage."
On the paranormal front, CONTACT is escalating. Contact with good angelic beings, contact with time travelers - contact with extraterrestrials and inner-terrestrials. For, the time has come to free the human race from the Controllers
On the really bad news front, MANY will now be 'feeling' the diabolical matrix of imprisonment that has been setup by the dark-side globalists. Some individuals will go wild trying to break free. Sadly, this also means others will free themselves by taking their lives. That, instead of battling back against their sinister, soulless captors.
Also, look for the downsizing of the economy to take a bigger toll on the people.
On the good news front, the theme is Creativity Unleashed ~ The Time is Now.
Most everyone on the Mother Earth will be awash in this vibe. To what degree depends on how open we are to becoming a purely creative being.
Across the planet, there will be leaps and bounds in creativity, as has been spoken about before. This means, of course, not only within artist personality types, but creativity begins to reign over every aspect of our lives. Also, those who haven't demonstrated much creativity will now do so, and some of them will leap to the forefront.
If you desire, intentionally open yourself to this new cosmic vibe, then watch what happens. You might be in for a very nice surprise.

Footprints in the Chamber - Towards a Quantum Qabbala,

The Qabbala has through the ages been used as a directory towards
the understanding of the universe and man`s relationship to it.
Since former Aeons of magick have had their perceptions rooted in
the observance of simple cause and effect relationships, the Qabbala itself, having attained its nascence in the earlier traditions, was unfortunately bogged down by this limited apprehension of the
universe. Here mathematics as used in a more or less Pythagorean
context provide a sort of key with which to approach the
unfathomable nature of human consciousness.
To this very day there are groups which still adhere to and openly
practice the more traditional ramifications of Qabbalistic
principles which are still firmly rooted in the mire of Nineteenth
Century Newton-sewed-it-all-up-there-are-no-more-mysteries physics.
But of course, owing to the leaps and bounds acquired by a very
unpredictable but consistent quantum model of reality as observed in our laboratories, this simplistic view is necessarily obsolete. We
no longer live, we have learned (if indeed we ever did) in a simple cause and effect universe where the source can always be gleaned
from observable effect. For the same reasons, Newtonian-based magic must give way to a more quantum model. Newton`s apple must now take into consideration Heisenberg`s Uncertainty Principle. The secret
wisdom must follow suit towards quantumization.
Another unfortunate tendency of some modern practioners of Qabbala
is to continue to regard everything from the standpoint of the
Demiurge, Yahweh, which of course is the basis of the now obsolete
(and dangerous) Judeo-Christian foundation of religious thought
which has held western civilisation in its thrall for about two
thousand years. Personally I find it amazing that modern
practioners, who despite no real Semitic disposition still practice an unmistakably orthodox Jewish mysticism. It was Aleister Crowley, that great Qabbalistic agent provocateur, who initiated the process of liberating the Qabbala from its otherwise Judaic orientation.
(This is not anti-semitism but a necessary step towards individual
development. It must also be stated that a Qabbala had been in use
centuries earlier by the Egyptians. The Jews merely adopted it to
their own religious precepts. They didn`t invent it. The actual
origin most likely predates Egyptian history.)
Crowley emphasized that the enlightened magician must, after careful study and application of his knowledge, develop his own Qabbalistic framework. By virtue of this the magician has arrived at a more
chaotic paradigm in opposition to a purely empirical view. Crowley, by adapting the Qabbala to a Thelemic context initiated that first
leap forward into the quantum age. Thus, the foundation for a more
quantum/chaotic system was lain.
I would like now to redefine the secret wisdom in terms of
quantumization as follows:
"The Qabbala is a table of observed synchronicities wherein multi-
dimensional potentia overlap into the field of perception implying a correlation/interaction as perceived on a three-dimensional plane."
The sum of the parts of the whole is determined by conceptual
visualisation and the observer`s ostensible observation ther. It
is therefore merely a perceptual tool for perceiving hidden meaning in the world determined entirely by the perceived-perception of the perciper (in the language of Satre), which will alter its form and
content (via expansion and contadiction) according to the
percipere`s own innate tendencies.
The qabbala is no longer merely a mathematical construct of an
ordered universe as conceived by devine will. Instead it becomes a
kind of computerized network of extra-sensory information. Even the idea of a prima causa itself may be inadequate as well. This idea is based solely upon a linear time frame and is therefore a corollary
of our erroneous perception of time whose actual nature may tend
more towards the cyclical. Primitive man, for example was very well aware of this fact, and acted in accordance with it. (This may have to do with primitive people being more in tune with their own
circadian rhythms. This expresses a more lunar-intuative cycle
rather than our own solar one.) If perception of time is based upon natural rhythms which effect the body coupled with our observance of nature, then our concept of time is entirely contrary to what nature itself is telling us. We are thus unaligned with a proper time
framework. Since a cycle is essentially a circle, no beginning or
ending can be found. And, it is already been theorized that there
are other dimensions of reality in which time as we know it (in a
durational, linear sense of perception) simply cannot exist.
The universe has again and again defied our attempts a definable
order upon it. Yet, mysteriously it does seem to act intelligently, even though this cannot be grasped by a rigid point A to point B
structure. What emerges is a kind of chaotic mandala structure, and it is the task of quantum qabbalism to apprehend, as much as is
possible, the interior of this structure. This opens the doors to
practical mysticism as opposed to impractical mysticism. The qabbala must then be updated to accomodate this vital realization in regard to its properties of being able to regulate perceptive awareness via interacting forces springing from more or less hidden dimensions
whose effect is known but not the cause.
The understanding of the intention of creation is a product of the
mind of the qabbalist himself. The fabric of reality is thereby
flexible, effected by his own experience of it, and in turn, this
experience determines his perception of it, which is altered by the interaction of these elements, more clearly understood as a
transaction. In other words, one perceives his environment and that environment by virtue of one`s perception of it begins to act
accordingly to the reality model which is believed to be true. This could be described as a kind of Copenhagen Interpretation as apllied to qabbalistic principles. The qabbalist then shares a unique
position of receiving qabbalistic impressions via observable
systematic synchronicities by means of inclination represented in
his own psyche. These impressions will translate back as meaningful data insofar as the transaction between observer and the observed
becomes enacted. His perception modifies the universe and in turn,
the universe modifies his perception. (This can serve as a
representation of the union of microprosopus and macroprosopus.) The feedback of this required information will be meaningful to him
alone as it is a byproduct of his own psychic field. He becomes a
kind of decoder of esoteric information which he has learned to
process.
From this quantum/chaos framework the qabbala can be regarded as a
four (or five) dimensional transaction as revealed in the mundane
world, whereby an enriched quality of information provides the key
to a higher understanding of the universe and of oneself, provided
the person in question is capable of processing this information.
From this perspective, ghosts, poltergeists, and other enigmas of
paranormal phenomena can be understood as failed communication or
remnants of a highly coded system which hasn`t been solved. The
problem arises when one dimension fails to adequately "translate"
into another. You might term this the Tower of Babel Effect. The
information being received is misinterpreted due to inadequate tools of reception and perhaps an inability to use tools properly. There
is also a basic misunderstanding of what this information means and to what extent the source can be determined. This is a little like
trying to demonstrate fourth dimension physics by a purely three
dimensional means. The instances of paranormal phenomena as
described above, may be due to a discrepancy of overlapping
dimensions which allows for a greater margin of error which impedes effective communication between the dimensions themselves. One is
reminded of Plato`s parable of the cave, wherein the shadows of the things observed on the wall of the cave are mistaken for reality
itself. Granted, a shadow does resemble the object projecting it,
but it is hardly the object itself. It is the task of the quantum
qabbalist to make allowances for this margin of interpretive
miscalculation by preparing for it in advance and thus integrating
this possible glitch into his qabbalistic computer. He makes
allowances for this possible occurence of organizational entropy and thus he is able to use it to his advantage.
The idea of a qabbala based upon an exploration of prima causa is no longer valid in the quantum age. The quantumized qabbalist learns to regard himself in the mirror of chaos. For him, the old Gnostic
dictum of "there is no part of me which is not of the gods", is
literally true. His "Tree of Life" is based squarely upon the
apprehension of his own enigmatic existence. He is more interested
in a practical application of his qabbalistic ideas and principles
for himself and others, than a cosmological game of hide and seek
wherein one searches for a prima causa "God" figure. But even for
this, he has an explanation: By careful observation of himself
within the mirror of chaos he has learned that the miracle of

The kingdom of God is within our hearts (Luke 17:21). It is the spirit of Jesus which is unconditional, selfless, sacrificial, merciful, humble, ever-forgiving and faithful. This spirit is instilled in every human heart (Ezekiel 36:27) through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Those who make him the Lord of their life by accepting his spirit (Romans 10:9), are enabled by the spirit to love their enemies, do good to those who hurt and betray them, offer the other cheek if struck on one, give without expecting anything in return, bring healing to their offenders by their prayers and acts of sacrificial love (Matthew 5:43-48), consider others as superior to them, seek the interest of others over their own (Philippians 2:3-4) and stay faithful to their marriage vows even when there is hurt and unfaithfulness (Luke 6:18 & Hosea 3:1).

Unfortunately, like many stories of ancient mysteries, the proof for this book has been taken under the control of the "authorities" which, sadly, means there is no way to verify the accounts contained within the covers of this book. And, although there are copious photographs, including a number in color, there are few details visible in many of them and no sense of scale. For a number of reasons, mostly unstated, a number of the artifacts documented by Mr. Wingate have either "disappeared", been "misplaced", or are available only to "qualified, credentialed" experts to examine. This naturally decreases the chances of dissenting opinions making their way to the popular media.
The first half of the book is dominated by the nuts and bolts kind of ooparts (out of place artifacts) which it is (at least theoretically) possible to check up on as well as possibly touch yourself. The second half, however, is almost an entirely different situation, since it deals with myths, legends, and prehistory and the possible interpretation of such.
The difficulty with such speculation is that it is inherently unverifiable. Anyone's interpretation COULD be the right one. The odds are that you will find as many theories as you will people willing to offer them.
There are theories in the second half of this book which I have never encountered before - including the conquering of Atlantis by the Aryan inhabitants of ancient India. There are other speculations and, admittedly, fictitious reconstructions which will, unfortunately, undermine the potential realities contained in the earlier portion of the book.
There are references scattered throughout the book to readings given by Edgar Cayce (America's "Sleeping Prophet") in the early part of the 20 th century. There was a time when his readings were as popular as the prophesies of Nostradamus, although they are less well-known now than the 2012 Mayan "end times" prophesies. How reliable they are is open to interpretation - he missed the predicted re-emergence of Atlantis in the Caribbean during the 1970s, and many of his predictions were made for individuals, so there is no way of tracking their effectiveness.
The final quarter of the book is devoted to a series of appendices - translations of Critias and Timeaus (two of the earliest extant references to Atlantis) and "A Deeper Look at the Crespi Collection of Cuenca, Ecuador" - which, while not new for the most part, help to explain some of the underpinnings of that which has gone before.

This is an album which is comprised of songs requested by some of the fans of this excellent group as well as some which are standbys of their performances. KIVA has seen some changes in their lineup of performers over the years, and this release is performed by the current lineup exclusively.
Ariana Lightningstorm sings lead on the majority of the tracks on this disk, and her voice lends a distinctive sound. There is something about the music which comes through in a very special way. As I was listening to "Sea Called" for the first time, I felt a chill travel up and down my spine...I haven't had that happen for a very long time. It is a sure sign that there is more to this song than is readily apparent.
Once again, the songs are mostly from the minds and pens of Kiva, with occasional imports from other sources. This gives the members of the group a chance to showcase their diverse talents.
Whereas the first CD from Kiva that I reviewed ("Out of the Corner of the Eye") had a basic theme to it, this one is a wide-ranging collection of songs with no one over-riding theme. In some ways that makes it more appealing, since there a variety of styles and formats available. I won't attempt to describe their style other than to say that is heavy on percussion and makes use of everything from flute to didjeridu to convey moods from light hearted to more serious.
My daughter has commented to me that most of the Pagan music she encounters is heavy on the Goddess-theme and/or invocation style. That explains why I prefer groups which are either mainly instrumental or which tend towards a story-telling style.
Without a doubt, this group is going to be one I will be watching for. I may not grab up everything I see from them, but their new releases will definitely be getting a listen

I ran across a mention of this group quite unexpectedly and decided that it fulfilled a couple of "requirements" I had previously established for myself. The most important one was that I had never heard any of their music before (although when I find a group I enjoy I am more inclined to continue finding and reviewing more from them), and the second was that (based on what I could determine) the music was not going to fall into a genre I have trouble relating to, such as heavy metal or rap.
This CD contains both original music from the members of Kiva and some offerings from others. They show a love and respect for the spirits which inhabit the world and which hover just beyond the edge of that which is normally observable. The figures and characters conjured by this music are those that you cannot see directly, but only from the corner of your eye - that little flash that draws you to try to find what attracted your eye in the first place.
The songs which comprise this offering are heavily weighted in favor of ballads, with a sprinkling of instrumental offerings. They cover everything from praises of liminal times of day and season to celebrations of the blessings of children to the "Battle of Evermore" (from Led Zepplin).
Without hesitation I can say that there is a bit of everything here. I do have to admit to a bias in favor of the ballads. Having said that, however, I must also say that under certain circumstances a nice little instrumental piece can be quite satisfying as well.

HELPING HAND, SAFE HOUSES GIVE HOPE IN NORTH KOREA
North Korea For the past decade, North Korea has been the world's most hostile country in which to live and practice the Christian faith.
Open Doors USA notes that nearly a quarter of the Christians in the country are believed to be serving out sentences in labor camps. By the end of his life, Kim Il-Sung saw himself as a deity, setting into motion a cult following under his sons. Those who did not participate were killed or sent for re-education in the labor camps.
Meanwhile, poverty is the reality the rest of the country bears. Roughly ten million inhabitants are malnourished, with thousands eating only grass and bark.
According to Open Doors, half the population lives in the north, close to China, where family-based networks of house churches exist in significant numbers. Last year, Open Doors distributed over 45,000 pieces of Christian materials in North Korea and secretly trained approximately 5,000 North Korean believers.
In addition, around 1,000 refugees and their families received help through Open Doors' safe houses across the border in China. Many North Koreans caught crossing the borders into China are returned, likely to face death sentences or worse-the punishment of family members down to the third generation.
That's where safe houses come into play. Open Doors can now provide over 1,500 North Korean refugees safe haven. Those who successfully cross can find safety, medical attention, food, and most importantly: spiritual nourishment.
What's more, Open Doors says that because not everyone escaping from North Korea is a Christian, their ministry partners can share the Gospel with hundreds of people.
As more people began fleeing North Korea, the need for more safe houses became clear. Open Doors asked for help raising 66,000 for new safe houses to meet the growing demand. The good news is that they not only met that goal, but exceeded it.
This additional amount allows Open Doors to move quickly, providing Bibles, training, advocacy, and other support where Christians need it most.

Calvinism is much bigger than the so-called "Five Points" - also known as TULIP. Calvinism should not be limited in definition to the "Five Points": this is just its soteriology. Calvinists are a diverse group, but the Five Points represents their shared doctrine of Salvation. I personally prefer the term "Augustinianism" because it points to the fact that the Doctrines of Grace were not invented by Calvin and the Reformers. But even "Augustinianism" is a bit misleading. I like Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones' remark: "We should not talk about 'Calvinism'; it is Paul's teaching."1 Those familiar with the history of the Reformed Church know that the Five Points as we know them, were formally developed in response to the theological crisis of Arminianism.
In 1610, a group of Dutch Protestant followers of James Arminius, known as the "Remonstrants," presented to the States General a "Remonstrance" that exposed their divergence from Calvinism. The matter was brought before the Synod of Dort (1618-1619), which was an international assembly called by the States General of The Netherlands in order to investigate the trouble. The Synod consisted of 35 pastors and elders from the Netherlands, five university professors from the Netherlands, 18 deputies from the States General and 27 foreign delegates. Besides Erastianism and anticonfessional humanism, the Synod had to deal with the fundamental Christian doctrine of Predestination. The Synod upheld the Augustinian doctrines of sin and grace and therefore declared the Remonstrants to be in doctrinal error. Arminianism was not tolerated in Europe until 1795. The "Five Points" were the Synod's reply to the specific discrepancies of the Arminian theology.
But I would suggest that there are three foundational truths adhered to rigorously by all Calvinists worthy of the name - and these are the undergirding basis of the Five Points. They are: 1. God's Sovereignty; 2.The Divine Decrees; and 3. Soli Deo Gloria. I see these three truths presented in this order in Job 23:13-15.2 Verse 13 tells us that no one can hinder God's free exercise of His sovereign authority. Verse 14 informs us that God has decreed everything that happens. And Verse 15 tells of the fear and awe we should have in the presence of God's glory. We discuss these three foundational truths in turn.
* The Sovereignty of God:
Nothing irks Calvinists more than the way in which all other doctrinal systems appear to disregard, downplay or bring into disrepute the sovereignty of Almighty God. If we assume, as the Scriptures plainly do, that God is sovereign, we cannot remove any one of the Five Points without assailing God's character and His very nature. This is why virtually all anti-Arminian polemic starts with a defense of God's sovereignty. God's sovereignty means that He is subject to no one and He is influenced by no one. God does as He pleases, only as He pleases, always as He pleases. No one can thwart Him and no one can hinder him. Scripture is replete with declarations to this effect.Spurgeon preached, "There is no doctrine more hated by worldlings, no truth of which they have made such a football, as the great, stupendous, but yet most certain doctrine of the Sovereignty of the infinite Jehovah."4 By this, he meant the way in which Divine sovereignty and human responsibility are usually pitted against each other as if they were utterly and absolutely incompatible. Besides the fact that this impugns the intellect of God by assuming that He is not smart enough to create morally responsible rational beings without confuting His own plans, it ignores the plain fact that Scripture teaches that man's responsibility is based on God's sovereignty.5
Arminians accuse Calvinists of believing that men are merely robots who mindlessly do whatever is foreordained for them to do. They then proceed to argue that this makes God unjust if He punishes men for doing that which they have no choice about. This argument is false on many counts. First of all, it is what philosophers call a 'category mistake,' viz., applying the features and limitations of one thing to an entirely different category, an un Secondly, it is built upon the notion that Love is the central attribute of God's nature. True, the Bible says that "God is love,6" but it tells us this once, while it tells us the God is holy countless times. This does not mean to suggest that God is holier than He is loving, but that in the grand scheme of things, God willed to theopneustically accentuate His holiness more often than His love. It is assumed that no one can meaningfully love God if they are not absolutely and unconditionally free from any Divine influence. This ignores the Biblical statement that we love God because He first loved us (i.e., His love is the cause of our love)7.
Finally, this is the same objection the Judaizers urged against St. Paul.8 This at least proves that Calvinist soteriology is the doctrine of St. Paul. We are not concerned with solving the issue here, but only with presenting the theological backdrop for the Five Points.
* The Divine Decrees:
By the Divine Decrees we mean the Scriptural doctrine that God has foreordained everything that has or will ever take place in the entire course of the history of the universe. It is only natural that the God who created everything should have a definite plan for the things He created. This plan has many particulars and that is why we speak of decrees in the plural. There is really only one single decree in the mind of God that comprehends all things.
The doctrine of the Divine Decrees plays such a prominent place in Reformed theology that A.W. Pink deals with this subject even before he discusses Divine Sovereignty.9 Berkhof informs us, "Outside of Reformed circles the doctrine of the decrees meets with very little favour. Pelagians and Socinians reject it as un-Scriptural and unreasonable, and Arminians either ignore it altogether, or represent the decrees of God as based on His foreknowledge."10 However, if we deny God's decrees we have to explain away a great deal of Scripture.
We shall only note three specific traits of the decrees as revealed in Scripture.
1. They are all-comprehensive. By this we mean that nothing lies outside their scope. It includes men's good actions,11 their wicked actions,12 contingent events,13 the extent of man's life14 and the place of his habitation.15 In short, all things were planned and purposed by God in the exact way they occur. With regard to sin, God's decree is permissive. This renders the future sinful act certain, but this does not mean that God will bring it to pass by His own act. God decreed not to hinder the sinful act of the creature's self-determination. Nevertheless, He regulates and controls its results.16
2. It is immutable. He never has to give a 'second thought' to any of His decisions. He in ineffably wise and can therefore never make a decision that He will later consider injudicious. He is all-powerful; therefore He never lacks the ability to bring about that which He purposes. God is faithful and true.17
3. It is efficacious. Berkhof describes it this way: "The fact that God made a divine plan does not mean that He has decided to bring to pass by His own act all that is included in it; but it does mean that what He has decided will certainly come to pass, and nothing can thwart His purpose.18 19
This is the reason that Calvinism always places such strong emphasis on Predestination. God is sovereign and as sovereign, He has decreed the conversion and/or perdition of all men. He is sovereign over men's perdition20 and He is sovereign over men's conversion21. God's decree rests upon His sovereignty, not, as the Arminians would have it, upon His foreknowledge. Scripture explicitly tells us that God's foreknowledge is based upon His decree.22 He knows all things because He has decreed that they should be. All things occur by His "determinate council (i.e., His decree) and foreknowledge" - in that order.
* Soli Deo Gloria:
Finally, Calvinism is committed to the glory of God. This does not merely mean that we are to consider God's glory as our motivation for all that we do - though this is certainly correct, but it primarily means that His glory is God's motivation for all the He does. Arminians often take offense at the above statement because it seems to them to insinuate that they are not interested in God's glory. But it is true to say that their system does not strive to emphasize God's commitment to His own glory in the same way that classic Calvinism does. Calvin says somewhere that it is unworthy of any theologian to permit people's minds to be occupied with anything but God's glory.
The Scriptures portray God's zeal for His glory as the primary motivation behind all His acts.23 This is why I took issue with the very popular notion that God's love is His central attribute. God's holiness is His glory. How many times does the Bible speak of the "beauty of holiness." By this we mean to say that whenever God acts in any way, His principal impetus is His commitment to His glory before anything else. When God decreed the plan of salvation for His elect, His glory was the first and foremost concern. He did it out of love, but He did it for His glory first! Consider Paul's statement that "every tongue will confess that Christ is Lord, to the glory of God."24 This tells us that the ultimate purpose and plan of God in the salvation of the elect and damnation of the lost is the recognition of Christ's glory - which, since the Son is of one essence with the Father (homoousion), brings glory to the Father as well.
God repeatedly calls Himself, "a jealous God."25 If we ask for what is He jealous, the obvious answer is: His glory. In Exodus 20:5 when God first declares His jealousy, it is in connection with the ban against idolatry. Idolatry is demeaning to God's character in that it suggests that the image is a suitable substitute for the Reality. We are accustomed to viewing jealousy as sinful, but it is because our jealousy is always misdirected. People very seldom are as zealous for God's glory as they are for their own. The few times it has occurred, God has taken special notice of it.26
This is a difficult concept for some people because of the apparent selfishness on God's part in being thus motivated. Human self-centeredness is sinful precisely because it puts self before God. It places the interest of an insignificant, finite worm of a man before the interests of the great, ineffable, inscrutable glory of God Pantokra5twr! In this, it is idolatrous. Likewise, it would be idolatrous (if such a blasphemy could be imagined!) for God to place any of interest before His own. It is an unsullied, utterly wholesome selfishness: it is a commitment to the Greatest, All-Perfect Self: the source of all inferior selves, indeed selfhood itself.
If God is so committed to the advancement and display of His glory, we are quite mistaken if we do not do the same thing. Calvin's own words are, "For, if the glory of God is dear to us, as it ought to be, we ought to struggle with all our might against him who aims at the extinction of that glory."27
In Psalm 19:1, David proclaims, "The heavens declare the glory of God." There are physical phenomena in the design of the universe that absolutely stagger the human imagination. Astrophysicists and cosmologists refer to these marvels as the "anthropic principle." This is a sophisticated way of saying that all of the various design characteristics of the entire universe are so perfectly suited for human life, that this must be the reason behind them. In other words, whether the universe was created by God or simply evolved, it exists in order to support human life. Many non-Christian physicists unashamedly advocate this. One example would be the ratio of the mass of electrons to protons. The ratio is so finely tuned that a change in either direction of 1 in 10 to the 34th power would not permit sufficient chemical bonding.28 To understand these odds we would have to imagine covering a million continents the size of North America in piles of ten centavo coins that reached all the way to the moon. Among these 10 decillion coins, (i.e., 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) there is one with a red spot on it. To match these odds, you would have to draw the coin with the red spot the very first time! These numbers are literally astronomical - no pun intended.29
But it gets even more amazing. Physicists have determined 75 parameters in the universe, in our galaxy, in our solar system and in the earth/moon/sun relationship that are unbelievably complex. Mathematicians have determined the odds of these 75 parameters occurring naturalistically to be 1 in 10 to the 99th power!
In his book, "Darwin's Black "Box, microbiologist Michael Behe discusses the blood clotting "cascade," which consists of a series of over 200 interconnected chemical reactions. Removing any single one of these would kill a human the moment he/she was ever wounded. A wounded person would either bleed to death or their blood would gel up inside their body. Either option would be fatal.30
The beauty and design of creation has always fascinated reverent minds. St Basil preached, "I want creation to penetrate you with so much admiration that everywhere, wherever you may be, the least plant may bring to you the clear remembrance of the Creator."31 He goes on to say, "A single plant, a blade of grass is sufficient to occupy all your intelligence in the contemplation of the skill which produced it."32 One is reminded of the line in Wordsworth:
To me the meanest flower that blows can give
Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.33
Yet, even though Christian apologists are correct when they note that such meticulous attention to detail shows God's unfathomable love for His creation, the Psalmist tells us that this is more an expression of God's glory than His love. Jonathan Edwards puts it like this: "For it appears, that all that is ever spoken of in the Scripture as a ultimate end of God's works, is included in that one phrase, the glory of God; which is the name by which the ultimate end of God's works is most commonly called in Scripture; and seems most aptly to signify the thing."34
It now remains to tie these three points together as the foundational underpinning of the Five Points. Let it first be noted that the Arminian scheme puts the cart before the horse by making God's decree contingent upon His foreknowledge. In fact, this scheme really makes God's knowledge contingent up on own creatures. There is a huge flaw in anyone's theology when they make any of God's attributes contingent. God alone is an absolute being. If we assume that God cannot decree our salvation unless He foresees that we will in fact believe, we are denying both the efficacy of His decrees and the reality of His sovereignty. What kind of sovereignty can be meaningfully spoken of when the clay hinders the Potter? What kind of Potter seeks the will of the clay before deciding what it will be made into? And what kind of glory can a Potter have when both His will and skill are frustrated by His pottery - the very objects of His craft?

I just finished watching the Devil's Playground. This documentary deals with the Amish custom of Rumspringa, of which the Wiki entry says:
RUMSPRINGA (also RUMSCHPRINGE or RUMSHPRINGA, derived from the Deitsch term for "running around or jumping") generally refers to a period of adolescence for some members of the Amish, a subsect of the Anabaptist Christian movement, that begins around the age of sixteen and ends when a youth chooses baptism within the Amish church or instead leaves the community. The vast majority choose baptism and remain in the church. Not all Amish use this term (it does not occur in Hostetler's extended discussion of adolescence), but in sects that do, Amish elders generally view this as a time for courtship and finding a spouse.
As a rule, of all the Christian cults, I rather appreciate how these folks tend to stay out of other folks' affairs. We envision them as religious anachronisms, as they tend to veer away from modern technology, but the film states that they shy away from anything that might endanger the community or family (the example was that a battery charger, not much of an impact, an automobile, a "huge "impact).
In fact, the doors are pretty much open to the adolescent at any time they want to return to the 'fold' - but if they return, and change their minds, to return to the 'English' ways? Then they are shunned.
My major issue with this group (as with any other religious nomenclature) is this sense of "tribalism". In some ways, tribalism is a social networking tool, a meeting of like minds. The unfortunate side-effect is the exclusion of those deemed "other". And when it is done in a religious context, somehow, some way, it just seems to make it that much "worse". Basically, a group of human beings is isolating and outcasting another human (or smaller group of humans) over a bunch of superstitious hooey. A perceived NON-CRIME committed by a NON-CRIMINAL as per rules set by a NON-EXISTENT JUDGE.
